01:31I'm here to tell the truth
01:33My name is Afton Ferris
01:53I've decided to tell my side of the story because the family needs closure
02:00They deserve to know why it happened and what happened
02:04My name is Michael Schallert and I decided to do this interview to give my side of the story of what happened
02:13I gave up my whole life for this girl
02:16And even five years ago if you would have asked me
02:21I would have stuck with her version
02:23Because I loved her
02:25She had me wrapped around her little finger
02:27I honestly don't know if he loved me or if he loved the control he had
02:32I did everything he wanted
02:34Her and I are the only ones that really know what happened
02:37It's time for the truth to come out
02:40I think what they told back in 2009 was the truth as to what happened
02:46And what they're saying now is both trying to find ways to make themselves look like they're not the bad one in the relationship
02:56But they're both bad
02:57October 19, 2009, West Frankfort, Illinois
03:05Around 2 p.m., 911 dispatchers receive a panicked call from a family member of 32-year-old Terry Seaback
03:15Terry's aunt called to report that she had spoken with Terry the previous evening on the evening of the 18th
03:23And was unable to get in contact with her on the 19th
03:28As she had learned from Terry's employer that she did not show up for work that day
03:32Terry's aunt tells dispatchers that Terry's live-in girlfriend Candace Majors isn't responding to her calls either
03:41Candace and Terry are living in Terry's aunt's property
03:45So when they don't respond to her phone calls
03:49She grabs a spare key and heads to the house to see what was going on
03:53When she approached the house, she noticed there was blood on the storm door
03:57She doesn't even walk in. She just calls 911
04:02When responding officers arrive on the scene, Terry's aunt gives them the key to the front door
04:11I pushed the door open approximately 5-6 inches
04:17Toes came beneath the door and you can see the blood on them
04:20I was able to push the door open a little further
04:23And I could see full body laid out perpendicular to the front door
04:27As police step into the room, they quickly realize there's a second female victim
04:35She was crumpled between the couch and the coffee table of the residence
04:42There was large amounts of blood in the carpeting and on the coffee table itself
04:46They've been shot multiple times some four to five times at least
04:51We knew who resided there and who to expect to be inside of that house
04:56Terry's aunt was on scene as as we came out of the residence and I think she saw it in my face when I came out
05:02A single mother to two kids, 28-year-old Candace Majors had lived a tough life
05:13Candace was a really bubbly, nice person. She had a great personality
05:18She was a very bright, intelligent girl
05:23She has so many positive things going for her
05:26But she got into meth really bad for a while
05:30She would go out and start partying and go on binges for three or four days
05:34She would keep a job, lose a job, get another job
05:38Kind of just like dead-end jobs
05:40Just really wasn't going anywhere in her life
05:42After losing custody of her two children, Candace knew she needed to make a change
05:51That's when a mutual friend introduced her to another single mother named Terry Sebeck
05:57At the beginning of 2007, they became really close, like right after that and moved in together
06:02Terry started a job painting with her father
06:06Candace had gotten herself enrolled in school to be a radiologist
06:11In September 2009, Terry and Candace welcomed their friend Michael Schallert
06:17And his girlfriend Afton Ferris to move in with them
06:21Afton and I were going from house to house
06:24Trying to find a place to stay until we'd get on our feet
06:28And Terry, her aunt Carol was my close friend
06:31Carol introduced us to Terry Sebeck
06:35And asked if we could live with her and Candace
06:39When I first met Candace and Terry, they were a very wonderful couple
06:43They had their problems
06:45But all relationships do
06:47They fought a lot
06:49But they also were there for each other all the time
06:52While we were living with them, we got close with them
06:55They were good friends
06:57But on October 19, 2009
07:03Just weeks after Afton and Michael moved in
07:06Terry and Candace are found tragically shot to death inside their home
07:11And detectives must determine what happened
07:15There were spent shell casings on the scene
07:20From where the shell casings were ejected after they fired the weapon
07:26It was a .22 caliber of a firearm used on Terry and Candace
07:32The weapon was not recovered on the scene
07:35So this would not have been a murder-suicide
07:39There was blood, multiple places, blood on the door
07:44Where it appeared one of them attempted to get out of the door
07:48It was a brutal crime scene
07:50As they process the scene, detectives begin to theorize a motive
07:56They discovered that a lot of credit cards, IDs, things like that
08:02Were missing from the home
08:04According to Terry's aunt
08:07Terry's gold Chevrolet Impala is also missing from the driveway
08:12They had learned that Terry, she had a vehicle
08:15That was not located on the scene
08:18They get the registration plates and begin searching for that vehicle
08:23They also learned early on that Terry and Candace
08:32Had been letting a young couple live with them for some time
08:36And that recently they had kicked them out of the home
08:39That young couple was Afton Ferris and Michael Schallert
08:43They were pretty much the lead suspects from very early on in the investigation
08:48I knew we were going to get arrested
08:50It was just a matter of time
08:52Michael seemed to think we could make a fresh start in California
08:57But at that time I was just on autopilot
09:00All I remember is stealing their car and taking off
09:04The few days after that everything was just a blur
09:07Realistically I knew it was over with
09:09I knew we weren't going to make it much longer without being caught
09:12Coming up, a multi-state manhunt ensues
09:19We were all over the news and I started crying
09:22I just was tired of it
09:24I was tired of being scared
09:26I was tired of looking over my shoulder
09:28The officers didn't know if they were going to try to
09:31Have a shootout with the police
09:34Or if they were going to come peacefully
09:36In October 2009, West Frankfort, Illinois, police have discovered the bullet-riddled bodies
09:56Of 32-year-old Terry Seebeck and her girlfriend, 28-year-old Candace Majors
10:02Detectives contact their families and break the devastating news
10:07I thought everything was going great
10:10They both were working
10:12The car they had bought was a nice car
10:15They were paying their bills
10:16They were going to school
10:18You know, they were living the typical normal life
10:21So it was very much a shock
10:24Terry and Candace had a couple that they had allowed to stay with them
10:31Because they had fallen on hard times
10:32And needed a place to stay
10:34And they had been residing with them
10:36Detectives ask the families about the young couple that had been living with Terry and Candace
10:45And they began to kind of put a timeline together as to Afton and Michael's life together once they met
10:52How they got to Southern Illinois
10:54And then where they possibly could have went when they left Candace and Terry's home
11:00Born in 1979, Michael Schallert was originally from Wyoming
11:08I grew up in Cheyenne
11:11My dad was in the Air Force
11:12So we flew around a little bit and lived in a few different places
11:16My sister was great
11:18We got along great
11:20And I got along with my parents
11:21Never had any issues really
11:23Growing up
11:25In high school, Michael's life took an unexpected turn
11:30I dated a girl
11:32We had a baby together
11:34A month after I turned 16
11:35And then when I turned 18
11:39I met another woman
11:41We ended up having a baby
11:42And so by the time I was 19
11:44I had two kids
11:45I always wanted to just have that perfect relationship
11:51I always just wanted to be settled down and live a good life with someone
11:55But my life was just kind of starting to go bad in Cheyenne
12:04Things weren't working out for me
12:05I couldn't find a good job
12:07My uncle gave me the opportunity to move to Illinois
12:11And start a life
12:12I was a painter for the union, so I had a good job
12:15I was working in all the different towns
12:18And I just picked West Frankfurt to live in
12:20I was dating a girl
12:22But I went back to Wyoming after we broke up
12:26And I just kind of roamed around
12:31And I didn't really hold down a job
12:35I felt like I didn't have a direction in my life
12:39I saw my kids once a month at the time
12:42I was really lonely
12:44I didn't date anybody for almost two years
12:47And that's about when I met Afton
12:50I was born in Park Rapids, Minnesota
12:57I was put in foster care
12:59I was part of the system
13:02Since I was two years old
13:05When I was 13, I was put in a group home
13:07I did my best in school
13:09And moving from institution to institution
13:13Made it extremely difficult
13:14But I did my best
13:15I still made A's and B's
13:17Because I had wonderful teachers
13:18Afton came to live with us at our children's ranch
13:22Back in about 2007
13:23She loved the outdoors
13:25She loved the outdoors
13:26She loved us
13:27We loved her
13:28We still love her
13:29By 17, Afton believed she was ready to strike out on her own
13:37I repeatedly ran away before they said I was too old to be a ward of the state
13:44When I was 18 years old
13:46I was homeless in Lander, Wyoming
13:48That's where I met Michael
13:53I met Afton in 2008
13:56And we saw each other at the bar
13:59I was 28
14:01I actually thought she was older than 18
14:04She was in the bar
14:05So I thought she was 21
14:07Her feet were black
14:09She had a suitcase with her
14:11And we started talking
14:12And she just started telling me what she was going through
14:16And I just wanted to take her in and take care of her
14:21He told me that I didn't have to sleep with him
14:24He would just want to take care of me
14:25So I went home with him
14:28And from then on our relationship started
14:30We were together 24 hours a day just about
14:37We were inseparable
14:38When I first got with him, it was heaven
14:42He took care of me
14:44But he slowly began to show his true colors
14:48He became more and more controlling
14:51It never became physical
14:54But psychological abuse is extremely more worse
14:57Than physical abuse in my opinion
14:59She would get jealous of my friends all the time
15:06I was never paying enough attention to her
15:09I saw all the red flags
15:10But I was just in love with her
15:12And I was so scared of being alone
15:15And I just wanted to be a part of her life
15:19Nearly a year into their relationship
15:25The young couple left Wyoming
15:27In search of better opportunities
15:29We were looking for a fresh start
15:32And I thought Illinois would be the place to go
15:34I lived in Illinois before
15:36And that was my whole goal
15:38Was to come back to Illinois
15:39And get back in the Painters Union
15:41We lived with my friend Carol
15:43For a short time
15:45It was only a few days
15:47And Terry and Candace offered a room at her house
15:52And so we went and stayed there
15:56We had our own room
15:58It was our chance to start our life
16:00We didn't plan on staying there forever
16:02We just planned on staying there
16:04Long enough to where I could get a job
16:07Get a place
16:08And Afton could get a job
16:10But we had lived in the house for about a month
16:14And we couldn't find jobs
16:18So they started getting a resentment towards us
16:21And that's when things started going downhill
16:24Just one month after Afton and Michael moved in
16:31Terry and Candace are found deceased
16:33Their families informed detectives
16:36That 19-year-old Afton and 29-year-old Michael
16:40Had moved out of the home the day before
16:43Afton and Michael Schallert
16:45Had been accused of stealing
16:47From Terry Seebeck and Candace Majors
16:50And then they were asked to leave
16:52With suspicion mounting around Afton and Michael
16:57Police put out an APB for the couple
17:00Later that day
17:02A witness comes forward with a crucial lead
17:06We had a subject that came forward
17:09And contacted the police department
17:10To say that Mike and Afton
17:12Had been at his residence
17:14On the evening of the 18th
17:16And they had left after he had gone to sleep
17:20And when he awoke
17:22He realized that a .22 pistol
17:24Was missing from his house
17:26Detectives realized
17:29That the missing .22 pistol
17:31Is the same caliber of weapon
17:33That was used in the double homicide
17:35When we learned that the gun was missing from there
17:40And Michael and Afton had been there
17:41The night before the murders
17:42I wasn't wasting any more resources
17:44You know, looking anywhere else
17:46Terry and Candace told us that we had to go
17:52But we didn't have any money
17:54So the plan was to talk to Terry and Candace
17:58And see if we could stay one more night
18:00When we went in the house
18:01They started arguing
18:03And that's where things started developing
18:06And so what happened
18:07This is the first time that I brought this up
18:10But I did not pull the trigger
18:12Less than 24 hours into their investigation
18:29Police in West Frankfort, Illinois
18:31Believe that missing couple
18:33Michael Schallert and Afton Ferris
18:36Are responsible for the murders
18:38Of their former roommates
18:39Terry Sebeck and Candace Majors
18:42It was kind of a cold night
18:46We had nowhere to go
18:48We were just, you know
18:50Hoping we could stay
18:51One more night
18:52With Terry and Candace
18:53We asked if we could come in
18:55And talk about what was going on
18:57And they let us in
18:59And we went in there
19:03And we were talking
19:04And they started arguing
19:05Most of the
19:09Accusing us of stealing
19:10And stuff was
19:11Mostly they accused Afton
19:13Of doing these things
19:14I was more
19:16The mediator
19:17And that's when she said
19:19Michael, shoot
19:20And I pulled out the gun
19:21And she ran over
19:23And grabbed it
19:24And she just started blasting
19:25It was just a spur of the moment thing
19:32I just went into shock
19:33And we left in their car
19:36Detectives next subpoena records
19:42For the victims' missing credit cards
19:44Hoping to track the suspects
19:46And that led them to a gas station
19:49In West Frankfort
19:50Where they were able to get
19:52Video surveillance
19:53Of Michael Schaller
19:55Pumping gas
19:56In Terry Siebeck's car
19:57Paying for that
19:58With Candace's credit card
20:00That they stole from the scene
20:01From there
20:03We thought that they were likely
20:05Getting on the interstate
20:06To leave the area
20:08When we went to the gas station
20:10Michael didn't change
20:12And that's why he went
20:13To the truck stop
20:14He had gone into that truck stop
20:17And changed his clothes
20:18And I still had
20:22The bloody clothes on
20:23And he made me change the car
20:25And put the bloody clothes
20:26On the floor
20:27And we'd discard him later
20:28He said
20:28And we drove off
20:29He told me to take
20:33Candace's phone apart
20:35Take out the battery
20:37And throw it out the window
20:38I was tired of being scared
20:41I was tired of looking
20:42Over my shoulder
20:42I was tired of being hungry
20:44I figured our lives were over
20:46So we planned on
20:48Killing ourselves
20:48So we both write
20:51Suicide notes
20:52He said
20:56Whenever they catch us
20:58You shoot me in the head
20:58And you shoot yourself
21:00I wanted to do it
21:01Right then and there
21:02Because I couldn't deal
21:03With what was going on
21:05And he said
21:07Just hold on
21:07And we were going to California
21:08My mom had a cabin
21:15Up in the mountains
21:16In Colorado
21:17So we headed straight there
21:20And that's the first place
21:22We stopped
21:23He broke in
21:25Through the window
21:26Unlocked it
21:26We went in there
21:27Fell asleep
21:28The next morning
21:30And I got on the internet
21:31And typed in our names
21:32Because I was curious
21:32If we were on
21:33You know
21:34Being chased
21:35And we were all over the news
21:37And I started crying
21:38After we left the cabin
21:40We went to my best friend's house
21:41We stayed there
21:42In Colorado
21:43Back in Illinois
21:48Detectives in West Frankfort
21:50Track down Michael's family
21:51In Cheyenne, Wyoming
21:53But they say
21:54They haven't heard from him
21:55They were able to find out
21:58They were able to find out
21:58That Michael had family
21:59That had a cabin
22:00Out West
22:01They also learned
22:02That Michael had
22:03Some friends
22:05That lived in Colorado
22:06Afton also had
22:08Some foster parents
22:09That were out West
22:10Because they feared
22:12They were possibly
22:13Crossing state lines
22:15They got the U.S. Marshals
22:16Involved to help
22:17In a search
22:18For Afton and Michael
22:20On October 21st
22:23Authorities noticed
22:24The credit card activity
22:25Stops in Larimer County, Colorado
22:28The Marshals in Larimer County, Colorado
22:33Had learned that
22:34Michael Schallert had a friend
22:36Who resided in a trailer park
22:38In Fort Collins, Colorado
22:40Surveillance on that residence
22:42Identified a Chevy Impala
22:45Which is the type of vehicle
22:46That Terry Sebeck owned
22:48Now that we see
22:49What we're pretty certain
22:51Would be the vehicle
22:52In this trailer park
22:53Those departments
22:56Established a surveillance
22:57In there to make sure
22:58That Michael and Afton
23:00Are at this residence
23:02The officers didn't know
23:07What kind of mindset
23:08That they were going to be
23:10Finding Afton and Michael
23:12In that day
23:13If they were going to
23:15Try to have a shootout
23:17With the police
23:18Or if they were
23:19Going to come peacefully
23:20When Michael Schallert
23:22Walks outside
23:23The Marshals quickly move in
23:26I remember a flashbang going off
23:28Michael hitting the ground
23:30By like five officers
23:32And I turned around
23:33Out the door
23:34And there was officers
23:36In riot gear
23:36Pointing guns at me
23:37They came in and tackled us
23:40And I knew it was over
23:41I remember just thinking
23:44This girl
23:46I love her so much
23:47She loves me
23:48You know
23:49We're going to
23:50Make it through this
23:51Coming up
23:55Cracks are exposed
23:57In Michael and Afton's relationship
23:59Leading to a stunning
24:01New allegation
24:02I had very strong feelings
24:04For Candace
24:05I think it had triggered him
24:07And jealousy
24:09Was a big part of it
24:10This is the first
24:12I've heard of it
24:12Jealousy never had
24:13Anything to do with this
24:14Authorities have just arrested
24:31Suspected killers
24:33Michael Schallert
24:33And Afton Ferris
24:35In Larimer County, Colorado
24:37While Afton and Michael
24:40Are transported to the local station
24:42For questioning
24:42Law enforcement conducts
24:44A search of the premises
24:46And Terry Sebeck's vehicle
24:48During the execution
24:50Of the search warrant
24:51In the trash bag
24:52They located
24:53Bloody clothing
24:53That had been worn
24:55By Afton Ferris
24:57They also find
24:59The remaining
24:59Stolen credit cards
25:00Along with both
25:01Candace's
25:02And Terry's ID
25:03In the execution
25:06Of the search warrant
25:06On the trailer
25:07They found a black purse
25:08That was Afton's purse
25:11And inside the purse
25:12They found a
25:13Black Ruger 22
25:14Semi-auto pistol
25:16This was the same weapon
25:17That had been reported
25:19Stolen to our police department
25:20They find
25:22Two handwritten letters
25:24From Afton
25:25That seem to be
25:26Suicide notes
25:27When West Frankfurt
25:33Detectives arrive
25:34In Colorado
25:35They question
25:36Afton first
25:37The investigator said
25:39That he would work
25:40With me
25:40If I told the truth
25:41But by then
25:42My mind was already
25:43Made up
25:43I didn't want him
25:44To take full credit
25:45So I said
25:46That I did half of it
25:47Thinking I would
25:48Take half the blame
25:49Off him
25:49Because I had never
25:50Been in trouble
25:50With the law before
25:51Afton confirms
25:53It all started
25:54When Candace and Terry
25:56Kicked her and Michael
25:57Out
25:57After accusing the couple
25:59Of stealing from them
26:00On October 18th
26:02We called them
26:04Michael talked to her too
26:05And he's like
26:06We didn't do this stuff
26:07You know
26:07She said on the phone
26:08That we will talk
26:09With you about it
26:10We didn't have a set plan
26:12We were going to like
26:13Try stealing Terry
26:14And Candace's car
26:15And maybe some money
26:17And there was no other way
26:18For us to do it
26:19You know
26:19Afton tells detectives
26:25That she and Michael
26:26Arrived at Candace
26:27And Terry's house
26:28Around 10pm
26:29And we asked her
26:31Can we come inside
26:32You know
26:32To apologize
26:33And we were sitting there
26:34And Terry was sitting
26:36Next to me on the couch
26:37It was just a four
26:38Of me in the house
26:39Yeah
26:39And they were telling us
26:41How we were stealing
26:41And stuff
26:42And how they went
26:43Through our room
26:43And found the C's
26:44And it was so trash
26:45And there
26:45Michael went in the room
26:48Saying well
26:48I need to go
26:49And see if there's
26:51Anything else
26:51And he came back out
26:54And Candace was bitching
26:55And he was like
26:57You know what
26:57Mother
26:57And he shot her
26:59She went backwards
27:03And then he shot Terry
27:05She hit the coffee table
27:08Afton stated
27:09That she noticed
27:10Candace was at the door
27:12And was using her cell phone
27:15To call the sheriff's department
27:16Afton said
27:17She grabbed a hold
27:18Of Candace
27:19And drug her back
27:22Into the residence
27:24And Michael shot her
27:26Some more
27:26Terry
27:29She was moaning
27:30And groaning
27:30And I told him
27:31Give me the gun
27:32And I shot her
27:35In her left eye
27:36And we didn't have
27:37Any other choice
27:38Any other choice
27:39Than what?
27:41Doing that
27:41And getting a car
27:43To go in and killing them
27:44And getting what you could
27:45And taking their car
27:46That was the only option
27:47That you guys left
27:48The only option
27:48I felt that
27:51That's just
27:52What they wanted to hear
27:53I guess
27:54I don't remember
27:55Like
27:55I don't remember
27:57The interview
27:57With Afton's version
28:01Of events in hand
28:02Police sit down
28:04With Michael Schallert
28:05I was
28:06In shock
28:07I didn't even know
28:09If it was day or night
28:09When they interrogated me
28:11I'm not the type of person
28:13To do anything like that
28:15I've never hurt anybody
28:17In life
28:17I just had nowhere to go
28:20That's all you do
28:22If I keep going
28:22What happened?
28:23I just walked in
28:26And she started blaming
28:28Afton stealing some CDs
28:30And me for a tank top shirt
28:35And I just couldn't take it no more
28:38And I had that gun
28:39I just pulled the trigger
28:42I can't even know how many times
28:46Then it got jammed
28:49Then it got jammed
28:50It happened
28:52We'd have loaded
28:54I reloaded it
28:56And she shot a couple times
28:59And we were gonna go away
29:04We thought maybe we could just like
29:06You know just rob him
29:08And just go
29:08But it just happened so fast
29:11When we were on the run
29:16Afton tells me
29:18If you take the blame for one
29:20And I take the blame for one
29:21We'll only get 25 years
29:23And we'll get out
29:23And we'll be together
29:24So I went and I said that I shot one
29:28Just to
29:29So that I could be there with her
29:31I was in love with her
29:32And I wanted to protect her
29:33I thought giving up 25 years
29:38To stay with her
29:40It was worth it at the time
29:41I would have done anything for her at the time
29:45But not kill anybody
29:46Following their confessions
29:51Michael Schallert and Afton Ferris
29:54Are both charged with two counts
29:56Of first degree murder
29:58News of their arrest
30:00Stunns those who knew both couples
30:03I was sick
30:04I was mad
30:05I was
30:06Every emotion you could have
30:08Makes no sense
30:09There was no reason for it
30:11When I saw
30:13The news report of what happened
30:15That she had been charged with a murder
30:17I felt really bad
30:18But it didn't surprise me
30:20Not that I should have warned somebody
30:22That hey
30:22Watch out she's dangerous
30:23I never thought that either
30:25Both Michael and Afton
30:30Plead not guilty
30:32Hoping a trial will save them
30:34From a possible death sentence
30:36At the time when they were charged in Illinois
30:39The killing of two people
30:41Made you eligible for the death sentence
30:43Then in 2011
30:51Just before Afton and Michael's trials
30:53Are set to begin
30:54The unexpected happens
30:56As they awaited trial
30:59The state of Illinois' governor
31:00Had imposed a moratorium
31:03On capital punishment
31:04With the threat of the death penalty
31:07Off the table
31:08Michael tells his attorney
31:09He wants to plead guilty
31:11And avoid the trial
31:12He decided he wanted to change his plea
31:15To guilty
31:16To the two counts of first degree murder
31:18And he did so
31:19I didn't want the families
31:23To go through all the trial
31:24And everything again
31:25Felt like it was too much
31:27For my mom
31:27For Terry and Candace's family
31:30I just figured my life was over anyway
31:34So I just pled out
31:36They wouldn't allow me to have the plea bargain
31:39Whenever I found out he took a plea deal
31:42I was shocked
31:43I was hurt
31:44I thought that he would go to trial like me
31:48But it just felt like he threw me to the wolves
31:50In West Frankfort, Illinois
32:04Michael Schallert has pled guilty
32:07For the double murder of his friends
32:09And former roommates
32:10Terry Seebeck and Candace Majors
32:13Michael Schallert pled guilty
32:15To both counts of murder
32:18And he was sentenced to life in prison
32:20I definitely feel like
32:22I should be punished for this crime
32:24But life, I think, is too much
32:27In July 2011
32:31Two years after the murders of Terry and Candace
32:35Afton Ferris' murder trial begins
32:38When Afton takes the stand to testify
32:41She paints a different picture
32:44Than the one she had described
32:45In the interrogation room
32:47I was told that she was blaming
32:49Everything on me
32:50I was told that she was saying
32:52That I was abusing her
32:54Things like that
32:55But, I mean, anybody can go into my past
32:57There's no abuse from anything
32:59I think because she thought
33:01Maybe she could get out
33:02I thought maybe that's why she changed it
33:07I honestly don't remember much of the trial
33:09I remember my lawyers giving me a soda
33:12To try to get me the caffeine
33:13To help clear my mind
33:15But I honestly don't remember anything I said on the bench
33:19The jury ultimately sides with the prosecution
33:23Afton was found guilty
33:26Of first-degree murder of both Candace and Terry
33:29She was found guilty of armed robbery
33:31And home invasion
33:32She was sentenced to life in prison for the murders
33:36And then she got some additional years
33:38For the home invasion and armed robbery
33:40I more or less was expecting it
33:45After everything that happened up until that trial
33:48I was expecting it
33:49Now, 16 years into her prison sentence
33:56Afton hopes to set the record straight
33:59About what really happened
34:00On the night of October 18, 2009
34:04And I believe that
34:06He won't ever tell the truth
34:10I'm here to tell the truth
34:12I remember getting to their house
34:17Because I remember how cold it was
34:18When we were walking
34:19One of the things is
34:21There really wasn't a plan
34:22We wanted to rob them
34:23When we arrived at the right side of the house
34:27We saw that Candace's brother's truck was still there
34:30And I said we should wait
34:31I didn't want to go through with it anymore
34:33And Michael just said it was too late
34:35We had to do this because we had nothing
34:37We had nothing
34:38We had no house
34:40We had no truck
34:41We had no job
34:42We had nothing
34:42We waited for Candace's brother to leave
34:49And I said that we should knock on the door
34:52And say we wanted to talk
34:53Candace answered
34:55And we went in
34:56And I sat down on the couch
34:58Next to Terry
34:59She was about a foot away from me on the couch
35:02And Candace was on the couch to the right
35:06And Michael sat in the recliner
35:07Terry was always quiet
35:10This is the part that I relive every single day
35:14Michael and Candace started screaming at each other
35:22And Terry and I didn't say anything
35:23And Michael pulled the gun
35:25And said you know what bitch
35:27And he shot her
35:27And he shot Terry
35:30And she went down
35:31Candace had a phone in her hand
35:39And she was crawling to the door
35:41And it said Michael's name
35:44And I was frantic
35:45I didn't know what to do
35:46So I went behind her
35:48And pulled her backwards
35:49And Michael came out
35:52And he told me to get off of her
35:54And I was about six inches away
35:55When he shot her in the head
35:56And he said we had to make this even
35:59So he gave me the gun
36:01And I went over to Terry
36:02And she was looking at me
36:04And I couldn't do it
36:06And Michael was listening in the room
36:08He was quiet
36:09But I didn't want to disobey Michael
36:11I had to do everything he said
36:14I was his little toy
36:16At the end of our relationship
36:18Anything he said
36:20I would do
36:21So I pointed out the couch
36:23And fired the gun
36:25Just wanted to make sure
36:28That I have the right information
36:30You said you did not
36:32Did not shoot Terry
36:35No
36:36I didn't
36:37When she looked at me
36:38I couldn't do it
36:39And that's when I went out the door
36:41And started the car
36:44And I was in the car
36:46For like 15 minutes
36:48So I don't know
36:51What happened to Terry
36:52Afton also drops a new bombshell
37:00When she explains
37:01What she believes
37:02Michael's true motive was
37:04That night
37:05I had very strong feelings
37:08For Candace
37:08And I just didn't understand them
37:11But Michael had such a control of me
37:14That I more or less
37:17Blocked them out
37:18I was helping Candace
37:20With her college homework
37:22And there was just electricity
37:24Between us
37:25And we just ended up kissing
37:27And
37:29It just felt right
37:31I believe Michael knew
37:33That something was going on
37:34I think it had triggered him
37:36And
37:38Jealousy was a big part of it
37:40He had always
37:41Accused me of
37:43Wanting to sleep with him
37:44Or sleep with everybody
37:45And he always got jealous
37:47I've often claimed
37:51That you were extremely jealous
37:53Of Candace and Terry
37:55How do you respond to that?
37:57Jealousy never had anything
37:58To do with this
37:59It hadn't crossed my mind
38:01That they
38:02Would ever have kissed
38:04Or anything
38:04It never crossed my mind
38:06This is the first
38:07I've heard of it
38:08I hate the fact
38:09That she's twisting it
38:11You can go back
38:12To anybody
38:14That knew both of us
38:15I didn't have any control
38:19In that relationship
38:20It was all hurt
38:22Afton Ferris and Michael Schallert
38:36Are both serving life in prison
38:38For the double homicide
38:40Of Terry Seebeck
38:41And Candace Majors
38:43Sixteen years after the murders
38:47Both Michael and Afton
38:49Have changed their stories
38:50And point the finger of blame
38:52At one another
38:54I want people to know
38:56That I did not pull that trigger
38:58That
38:59It's not in me
39:01I could never do it
39:02I'm going to be in here
39:04The rest of my life
39:05Regardless
39:06I don't have a chance
39:07To get out
39:08I'm not trying to
39:09Appeal my sentence
39:10I'm trying to
39:11To tell exactly what happened
39:13On the drive
39:17Back to Colorado
39:19She said
39:21If I take the blame for one
39:23And she took the blame for one
39:24That we would get out
39:26We would be together again
39:27When I said
39:29Back then
39:31That I shot Terry and Candace
39:33Or shot one of them
39:35Or whatever it was
39:36It was a lie
39:37Because I was protecting Afton
39:39I loved her
39:41She manipulated me
39:43She never really cared about me
39:45Like I cared about her
39:46It's okay to love somebody
39:49But just
39:49Don't love too much
39:51It's not worth giving up
39:52Your whole life
39:53Just for love
39:54With Michael claiming
39:59Now that Afton
40:00Was the lone shooter
40:02It also kind of skews
40:04How I view him
40:06Here we are
40:0716 years later
40:09And now he's changed his story
40:11That hurts that he's done that now
40:14To me
40:14I respected him a little more
40:17For coming in
40:18And admitting his guilt
40:19And now that I hear
40:21That he's changed that
40:23That respect is not there anymore
40:26With regard to Afton
40:29I always thought
40:30That she would change her story
40:32And blame Michael
40:33She's only worried about
40:35How she's portrayed
40:36To other people
40:36One of the reasons
40:42Why I changed my story
40:44I've grown up
40:44Because of my faith
40:46There's no reason
40:47For me to hold on to it
40:48And fight it
40:49And fight it
40:50And fight it
40:50Because
40:50Because
40:51You don't live forever
40:54You don't take this with you
40:55And the families need to know
40:56What happened
40:57Because it hopefully
40:59Will use closure
41:00And help them
41:01Understand why it happened
41:03And what happened
41:04It's a sick, twisted crime
41:06And I believe
41:08Nobody deserves that
41:09Nobody
41:10At all
41:11And
41:12Every October
41:15I hold a vigil for them
41:16Because
41:17They need to be remembered
41:19As beautiful, wonderful people
41:21Who
41:21Helped everybody they could
41:23I'm sorry
41:27I'm truly sorry
41:29For everything that happened
41:30And
41:30I wish it wouldn't have
41:32I wish I could go back
41:33And change things
41:34I mean it took
41:36Two seconds
41:37To ruin all these lives
41:39And
41:40It's just
41:43It's sad that it happened
41:45And
41:47I'll think about it every day
41:49I just
41:51Would want the family
41:52To know how sorry I am
41:53And if this is what you want me
41:55To be punished with
41:56Then I'm okay with that
41:57To Afton
41:59I'd say just good luck
42:00And good riddance
42:02I have nothing for her
42:04I mean
42:05She knows what happened
42:07She knows who ruined
42:09Whose life
42:09Just wanted to know
42:11I wish the best for him
42:13But I want nothing to do with him
42:14Because you
42:15Just
42:16Made it seem like
42:17I was nothing
42:18But a toy
42:19And that
42:19That's all I deserved
