00:00in 2022 snapped killer couples told the story of afton ferris and michael schallert a young
00:11couple who betrayed their friends they had been shot multiple times there was large amounts of
00:17blood i believe that if the two of them hadn't got together that candace and terry would still
00:23be alive these two young people's lives were thrown away for what nothing four people basically died
00:31that day had they not been arrested in colorado i think more people likely would have died
00:36i'm not the type of person to do anything like that never hurt anybody in my life
00:45currently serving life sentences in the illinois department of corrections
00:51afton ferris and michael schallert share new and conflicting versions of the events that changed
00:59their lives forever when we were on the run afton tells me if you take the blame for one and i take
01:07the blame for one we'll only get 25 years and we'll get out and we'll be together it's time for
01:12the truth to come out i was his little toy at the end of our relationship anything he said
01:20i would do i hate the fact that she's twisting it it's not worth giving up your whole life just for
01:27love and i believe that he won't ever tell the truth i'm here to tell the truth
01:33my name is afton ferris i've decided to tell my side of the story because the family needs closure
02:00they deserve to know why it happened and what happened
02:04my name is michael schallert and i decided to do this interview to give my side of the story
02:12of what happened i gave up my whole life for this girl and even five years ago if you would have asked
02:21me i would have stuck with her version because i i loved her she had me wrapped around her little
02:27finger i honestly don't know if he loved me or if he loved the control he had i did everything he
02:34wanted her and i are the only ones that really know what happened it's time for the truth to come out
02:40i think what they told back in 2009 was the truth as to what happened and what they're saying now
02:48is both trying to find ways to make themselves look like they're not the bad one in the relationship
02:56but they're both bad
02:57they're not the bad one in the relationship
03:01october 19th 2009 west frankfort illinois
03:07around 2 p.m 9-1-1 dispatchers receive a panicked call from a family member of 32-year-old terry seeback
03:16terry's aunt called to report that she had spoken with terry the previous evening on the evening of the 18th
03:23and was unable to get in contact with her on the 19th as she had learned from terry's employer that
03:30she did not show up for work that day terry's aunt tells dispatchers that terry's live-in
03:36girlfriend candace majors isn't responding to her calls either candace and terry are living in terry's
03:44aunt's property so when they don't respond to her phone calls she grabs a spare key and heads to the house
03:51to see what was going on when she approached the house you notice there was blood on the storm door
04:00she doesn't even walk in she just calls 9-1-1
04:06when responding officers arrive on the scene terry's aunt gives them the key to the front door
04:13i pushed the door open approximately five six inches toes came beneath the door and you can see the blood on
04:20them i was able to push the door open a little further and i could see full body laid out perpendicular
04:26to the front door as police step into the room they quickly realize there's a second female victim
04:37she was crumpled between the couch and the coffee table of the residence there was large amounts of
04:43blood in the carpeting and on the coffee table itself they've been shot multiple times some four to five
04:51times at least we knew who resided there and who to expect to be inside of that house terry's aunt was
04:58on scene as as we came out of the residence and i think she saw my face when i came out
05:03a single mother to two kids 28 year old candace majors had lived a tough life candace was a really
05:14bubbly nice person she had a great personality she was a very bright intelligent girl she has so many
05:24positive things going for her but she got into meth really bad for a while she would go out and start
05:32partying and go on binges for three or four days she would keep a job lose a job get another job
05:38kind of just like dead-end jobs just really wasn't going anywhere in her life
05:45after losing custody of her two children candace knew she needed to make a change
05:51that's when a mutual friend introduced her to another single mother named terry seeback
05:57at the beginning of 2007 they became really close like right after that and moved in together
06:03terry started a job painting with her father candace had gotten herself enrolled in school to be a
06:10radiologist in september 2009 terry and candace welcomed their friend michael shallard and his
06:18girlfriend afton ferris to move in with them after and i were going from house to house trying to find a
06:25place to stay until we get on our feet and terry her at carol was my close friend carol introduced us
06:34to terry seeback and asked if we could live with her and candace when i first met candace and terry they
06:42were a very wonderful couple um they had their problems but all relationships do they fought a lot
06:49but they also were there for each other all the time while we were living with them we got close
06:55with them they were good friends but on october 19 2009 just weeks after afton and michael moved in
07:06terry and candace are found tragically shot to death inside their home
07:11and detectives must determine what happened there were spent shell casings on the scene
07:21from where the shell casings were ejected after they fired the weapon it was a 22 caliber of a firearm
07:30used on terry and candace the weapon was not recovered on the scene
07:35so this would not have been a murder suicide there was blood multiple places blood on the door
07:44where it appeared one of them attempted to get out of the door it was a brutal crime scene
07:51as they process the scene detectives begin to theorize a motive they discovered that a lot of credit
07:59cards ids things like that were missing from the home according to terry's aunt terry's gold chevrolet impala
08:09is also missing from the driveway they had learned that terry she had a vehicle that was not located on the
08:18scene they get the registration plates and begin searching for that vehicle
08:23they also learned early on that terry and candace had been letting a young couple live with them for
08:35some time and that recently they had kicked them out of the home that young couple was afton ferris and
08:42michael schallert they were pretty much the lead suspects from very early on in the investigation
08:48i knew we were going to get arrested it was just a matter of time michael seemed to think we could
08:55make a fresh start in california but at that time i was just on autopilot all i remember is stealing
09:02their car and taken off the few days after that everything was just a blur realistically i knew it was
09:09over with i knew we weren't going to make it much longer without being caught
09:12coming up a multi-state manhunt ensues we were all over the news and i started crying
09:22i just was tired of it i was tired of being scared i was tired of looking over my shoulder
09:28the officers didn't know if they were going to try to have a shootout with the police
09:34or if they were going to come peacefully in october 2009 west frankfort illinois police have
09:53discovered the bullet riddle bodies of 32 year old terry seebeck and her girlfriend 28 year old
10:01candace majors detectives contact their families and break the devastating news
10:08i thought everything was going great they both were working the car they had bought was a nice car
10:15they were paying their bills they were going to school you know they were living the typical normal
10:21life so it was very much a shock terry and candace had a couple that they had allowed to stay with
10:30them because they had fallen on hard times and needed a place to stay and they had been residing with them
10:39detectives ask the families about the young couple that had been living with terry and candace
10:45and they began to kind of put a timeline together as to afton and michael's life together once they met
10:53how they got to southern illinois and then where they possibly could have went when they left candace and
10:59terry's home born in 1979 michael shallert was originally from wyoming i grew up in cheyenne my dad
11:12was in the air force so we we flew around a little bit and lived in a few different places my sister was
11:18great we got along great and i got along with my parents never had any issues really growing up
11:25in high school michael's life took an unexpected turn i dated a girl we had a baby together a month
11:34after i turned 16. and then when i turned 18 i met another woman we ended up having a baby and so by the
11:44time i was 19 i had two kids i always wanted to just have that perfect relationship i always just wanted to
11:52be settled down and live a good life with someone but my life was just kind of starting to go bad in
12:03in cheyenne things weren't working out for me i couldn't find a good job um my uncle gave me the
12:09opportunity to move to illinois and start a life i was a painter for the union so i had a good job
12:16i was working in all the different towns and i just picked west frankfort to live in
12:20i was dating a girl but i went back to wyoming after we broke up and i just kind of roamed around
12:31then i didn't really uh hold down a job i felt like i didn't have a direction in my life i saw my kids
12:41once a month at the time i was really lonely uh i didn't date anybody for almost two years
12:47years and that's about when i met haften
12:54i was born in park rapids minnesota i was put in foster care i was part of the system
13:03since i was two years old when i was 13 i was put in a group home i did my best in school and
13:10moving from institution institution made it extremely difficult but i did my best i still
13:16made a's and b's because i had wonderful teachers afton came to live with us at our children's ranch
13:22back in about 2007. she loved the outdoors she loved us we loved her still love her
13:29by 17 afton believed she was ready to strike out on her own i repeatedly ran away before they said i was
13:42too old to be awarded the state when i was 18 years old i was homeless in leaner wyoming
13:48that's where i met michael i met afton in 2008 and we saw each other at the bar i was 28. i actually
14:02thought she was older than than 18. she was in the bar so i thought she was 21. her feet were black
14:10she had a suitcase with her and we started talking and she just started telling me what she was going
14:16through and i just i just wanted to take her in and take care of her he told me that i didn't have
14:23to sleep with him he would just want to take care of me so i went home with him and from then on our
14:29relationship started we were together 24 hours a day just about we were inseparable when i first got
14:41with him it was heaven he took care of me but he slowly began to show his true colors he became more
14:49and more controlling it never became physical but psychological abuse is extremely more worse than
14:57physical abuse in my opinion
15:03she would get jealous of my friends all the time i was never paying enough attention to her
15:08i saw all the red flags but i i was just in love with her and i was so scared of being alone and
15:16i just wanted to be a part of her life
15:23nearly a year into their relationship the young couple left wyoming in search of better opportunities
15:30we were looking for a fresh start and i thought illinois would be the place to go
15:34i lived in illinois before and that was my whole goal was to come back to illinois and get back in
15:40the painters union we lived with my friend carol for a short time uh it was only a few days and terry
15:49and candace offered a room at her house and so we went and stayed there we had our own room it was our
15:59chance to start a chance to start our life we didn't plan on staying there forever we just planned
16:03on staying there long enough to where i could get a job get a place and afton could get a job but we had
16:12lived in the house for about a month and we couldn't find jobs so they started getting a resentment towards us
16:21and that's when things started going downhill just one month after afton and michael moved in terry and
16:31candace are found deceased their families informed detectives that 19 year old afton and 29 year old
16:39michael had moved out of the home the day before afton and michael shallard had been accused of stealing
16:47from terry seebeck and candace majors and then they were asked to leave with suspicion mounting
16:56around afton and michael police put out an apb for the couple later that day a witness comes forward
17:04with a crucial lead we had a subject that came forward and contacted the police department to say
17:11that mike and afton had been at his residence on the evening of the 18th and they had left after
17:19he had gone to sleep and when he awoke he realized that a 22 pistol was missing from his house
17:28detectives realized that the missing 22 pistol is the same caliber of weapon that was used in the double
17:35homicide when we learned that the gun was missing from there and michael and afton have been there
17:41the night before the murders i wasn't wasting any more resources you know looking anywhere else
17:49terry and candace told us that we had to go but we didn't have any money so the plan was to talk to
17:57terry and candace and see if we could stay one more night when we went in the house they started
18:03arguing and that's where things started developing and so what happened this is the first time that
18:09i brought this up but i did not pull the trigger
18:26less than 24 hours into their investigation police in west frankfort illinois believe that
18:32missing couple michael shallard and afton ferris are responsible for the murders of their former
18:39roommates terry seebeck and candace majors it was kind of a cold night we had nowhere to go we're just
18:49you know hoping we could stay one more night with terry and candace we asked if we could come in and
18:56talk about what was going on and they let us in and we went in there and we were talking and they started
19:05arguing most of the accusing us of stealing and stuff was mostly they accused afton of doing these
19:14things i was more the mediator and that's when she said michael shoot and i pulled out the gun and she
19:23ran over grabbed it and she just started blasting it it was just a spur of the moment thing i just
19:33went into shock and we left in their car
19:40detectives next subpoena records for the victim's missing credit cards hoping to track the suspects
19:46that led them to a gas station in west frankfort where they were able to get video surveillance of
19:53michael challer pumping gas in terry seebeck's car paying for that with candace's credit card that
20:00they stole from the scene from there we thought that they were likely getting on the interstate to
20:07leave the area when we went to the gas station michael didn't change and that's why he went to the
20:13truck stop he had gone into that truck stop and changed his clothes and i still had the bloody
20:22clothes on and he made me change the car and put the bloody clothes on the floor and we discard him
20:27later he said and we drove off he told me to take candace's phone apart take out the battery and throw it
20:37out the window i was tired of being scared i was tired of looking over my shoulder i was tired of being
20:43hungry i figured our lives were over so we planned on killing ourselves so we both write suicide notes
20:55he said whenever they catch us you shoot me in the head and you shoot yourself i wanted to do it right
21:01then and there because i couldn't deal with what was going on and he said just hold on we're going to
21:08california my mom had a cabin up in the mountains in colorado so we headed straight there and that's
21:21the first place we stopped he broke in through the window unlocked it we went in there fell asleep
21:28the next morning and i got on the internet and typed in our names because i was curious if
21:33we were on you know being chased and we were all over the news and i started crying after we left
21:39the cabin we went to my best friend's house we stayed there in colorado
21:47back in illinois detectives in west frankfort track down michael's family in cheyenne wyoming
21:53but they say they haven't heard from him they were able to find out that michael had family that
21:59had a cabin out west they also learned that michael had some friends that lived in colorado afton also
22:08had some foster parents that were out west because they feared they were possibly crossing state lines
22:15they got the u.s marshals involved to help in in a search for afton and michael
22:21on october 21st authorities noticed the credit card activity stops in larimer county colorado
22:30the marshals and larimer county colorado had learned that michael shallard had a friend who resided in
22:37a trailer park in fort collins colorado surveillance on that residence identified a chevy impala which is
22:45the type of vehicle that terry seeback owned now that we see that the what we're pretty certain would
22:51be the vehicle in this trailer park those departments establish a surveillance in there to make sure that
22:59michael and afton are at this residence
23:06the officers didn't know what kind of mindset that they were going to be finding afton and michael
23:12in that day if they were going to try to have a shootout with the police or if they were going to
23:19come peacefully when michael shallard walks outside the marshals quickly move in i remember a flashbang
23:27going off michael hitting the ground by like five officers and i turn around out the door and there
23:34was officers in riot gear pointing guns at me they came in and tackled us and i i knew it was over
23:43i remember just thinking this girl i love her so much she loves me you know we're gonna make it through
23:51this coming up cracks are exposed and michael and afton's relationship leading to a stunning new allegation
24:03i had very strong feelings for candace i think it had triggered him and jealousy was a big part of it
24:10this is the first i've heard of it jealousy never had anything to do with this
24:29authorities have just arrested suspected killers michael shallard and afton ferris in larimer county
24:36colorado while afton and michael are transported to the local station for questioning law enforcement
24:44conducts a search of the premises and terry seebeck's vehicle during the execution of the search warrant
24:51in the trash bag they located bloody clothing that had been worn by afton ferris they also find the
24:59remaining stolen credit cards along with both candace's and terry's id in the execution of the
25:06search warrant on the trailer they found a black purse that was afton's purse and inside the purse they
25:12found a black ruger 22 semi-auto pistol this was the same weapon that had been reported stolen to our
25:20police department they find two handwritten letters from afton that seemed to be suicide notes
25:29when west frankfort detectives arrive in colorado they question afton first the investigator said
25:39that he would work with me if i told the truth but by then my mind was already made up i didn't want him
25:44to take full credit so i said that i did half of it thinking i would take half the blame off him
25:49because i had never been in trouble with the law before afton confirms it all started when candace and
25:55terry kicked her and michael out after accusing the couple of stealing from them on october 18th
26:03we called them michael talked to her too and he's like we didn't do this stuff you know
26:07she said on the phone that we will talk with you about it we didn't have a set plan we were gonna like
26:13try stealing terry candace's car and maybe some money and there was no other way for us to do it
26:18you know afton tells detectives that she and michael arrived at candace and terry's house
26:28around 10 p.m and we asked her can we come inside you know to apologize and we were sitting there
26:35and terry was sitting next to me on the couch just before me in the house yeah and they were
26:40telling us how we were stealing and stuff and how they went to our room and found the cds and it was so
26:45trashed in there michael went in the room saying well i need to go see if there's anything else
26:53then he came back out and candace was bitching he's like you know what mother
26:58he shot her
27:01she went backwards and then he shot terry she hit the she hit the coffee table
27:07afton stated that she noticed candace was at the door
27:13and was using her cell phone to call the sheriff's department afton said she grabbed a hold of candace
27:21and drug her back into the residence and michael shot her some more
27:26terry she was moaning and groaning and i told him to give me the gun
27:34and i shot her in her left eye we didn't have any other choice
27:39any other choice than what doing that and getting a car to go in and killing them and getting what
27:45you could and taking their car that was the only option that you guys left
27:48actually i felt that that's just what they wanted to hear i guess i don't remember like i don't
27:56remember the interview with afton's version of events in hand police sit down with michael shallert
28:06i was in shock but i didn't even know if it was day or night when i they interrogated me
28:12i'm not the type of person to do anything like that i've never hurt anybody in life
28:19i just had nowhere to go that's how you do it if i keep going what happened
28:25we just walked in and she started blaming it after stealing some cds
28:33and me for a tank top shirt and i just couldn't take it no more and i had that gun
28:41i just pulled the trigger i don't even know how many times
28:48then it got jammed
28:52it happened to me to load it i reloaded it
28:57and she shot a couple times
29:02then we were gonna go away we thought maybe we could just like you know just rob him and just go
29:08it just happened so fast
29:15when we were on the run afton tells me if you take the blame for one and i take the blame for one
29:21we'll only get 25 years and we'll get out and we'll be together so i went and i said that i shot one just
29:28to so that i could be there with her i was in love with her and i wanted to protect her
29:35i thought giving up 25 years to to to stay with her and it was worth it at the time
29:43i would have done anything for her at the time but not kill anybody
29:46following their confessions michael shallard and afton ferris are both charged with two counts of
29:56first degree murder news of their arrest stuns those who knew both couples i was sick i was mad i was
30:07every emotion you could have makes no sense there was no reason for it when i saw the news report of
30:14what happened that she had been charged with a murder i felt really bad but it didn't surprise me
30:20not that i should have warned somebody that hey watch out she's dangerous i never thought that either
30:29both michael and afton plead not guilty hoping a trial will save them from a possible death sentence
30:36at the time when they were charged in illinois the killing of two people made you eligible for the
30:43death sentence
30:49then in 2011 just before afton and michael's trials are set to begin the unexpected happens
30:57as they awaited trial the state of illinois's governor had imposed a moratorium on capital punishment
31:05with the threat of the death penalty off the table michael tells his attorney he wants to plead guilty
31:11and avoid the trial he decided he wanted to change his plea to guilty to the two counts of first degree
31:18murder and he did so i didn't want the families to go through all the the trial and everything again
31:25felt like it was too much for my mom for terry and candace's family i just
31:31figured i my life was over anyway so i just played out they wouldn't allow me to have the plea bargain
31:40whenever i found out he took a plea deal i was shocked i was hurt i thought that he would
31:47go to trial like me but it just felt like he threw me to the wolves
32:03in west frankfort illinois michael shallert has pled guilty for the double murder of his friends and
32:09former roommates terry seebeck and candace majors michael shallert pled guilty to both counts of murder
32:18and he was sentenced to life in prison i definitely feel like i should be punished for this crime
32:24but life i think is too much
32:30in july 2011 two years after the murders of terry and candace afton ferris's murder trial begins
32:39when afton takes the stand to testify she paints a different picture than the one she had described in
32:45the interrogation room i was told that she was blaming everything on me i was told that she was
32:52saying that i was abusing her things like that but i mean anybody can go into my past there's no abuse
32:58from anything i think because she thought maybe she could get out i thought maybe that's why she she
33:06changed it i honestly don't remember much of the trial i remember my lawyers giving me a soda to try to
33:12get me the caffeine to help clear my mind but i honestly don't remember anything i said on the bench
33:20the jury ultimately sides with the prosecution afton was found guilty of first-degree murder of
33:28both candace and terry she was found guilty of armed robbery and home invasion she was sentenced to
33:34life in prison for the murders and then she got some additional years for the home invasion and armed robbery
33:43i more or less was expecting it after everything that happened up until that trial i was expecting it
33:53now 16 years into her prison sentence afton hopes to set the record straight about what really
34:00happened on the night of october 18th 2009 and i believe that he won't ever tell the truth
34:10i'm here to tell the truth
34:15i remember getting to their house because i remember how cold it was when we were walking
34:20one of the things is there really wasn't a plan we wanted to rob him when we arrived at the right
34:26side of the house we saw that canis's brother's truck was still there and i said we should wait i didn't
34:32want to go through with it anymore michael just said it was too late we had to do this because we had
34:37nothing we had nothing we had no house we had no truck we had no job we had nothing
34:46we waited for candace's brother to leave and i said that we should knock on the door and say we
34:52wanted to talk candace answered and we went in and i sat down on the couch next to terry she was about
35:00a foot away from me on the couch and candace was on the couch to the right and michael sat in the
35:07recliner terry was always quiet this is the this is the part that i relive every single day
35:19michael and candace started screaming at each other and terry and i didn't say anything
35:24and michael pulled the gun and said you know what bitch and he shot her and he shot terry and she went
35:31down
35:37candace had a phone in her hand and she was crawling to the door
35:41and i said michael's name i was frantic i didn't know what to do so i went behind her and pulled her
35:48backwards and michael came out and he told me to get off of her and i was about six inches away when
35:55he shot her in the head and he said we had to make this even so he gave me the gun and i went over
36:02to terry and she was looking at me and i couldn't do it and michael was listening in the other room he
36:08was quiet but i didn't want to disobey michael i had to do everything he said i was his little toy
36:17at the end of our relationship anything he said i would do so i pointed out the couch and fired the
36:25gun just wanted to make sure that i have the right information you said you did not
36:33did not shoot terry no i didn't when she looked at me i couldn't do it and that's when i went out the
36:40door and started the car and i was in the car for like 15 minutes so i don't know what happened to terry
36:57afton also drops a new bombshell when she explains what she believes michael's true
37:03motive was that night i had very strong feelings for candace and i just didn't understand them but
37:12michael had such a control of me that i more or less blocked them out i was helping candace with her
37:20college homework and there was just electricity between us and we just ended up kissing and
37:28it just felt right i believe michael knew that something was going on i think it had triggered
37:36him and jealousy was a big part of it he had always accused me of wanting to sleep with
37:44them or sleep with everybody and he always got jealous
37:50afton claimed that you were extremely jealous of candace and terry how do you respond to that
37:57jealousy never had anything to do with this it hadn't crossed my mind that they would ever have
38:03kissed or anything it never crossed my mind this is the first i've heard of it i hate the fact that
38:09she's twisting it you can go back to anybody that knew both of us there i didn't have any control in
38:19that relationship it was all hurt
38:34afton ferris and michael shallert are both serving life in prison for the double homicide of terry seebeck
38:41and candace majors 16 years after the murders both michael and afton have changed their stories
38:51and point the finger of blame at one another i want people to know that i did not pull that trigger
38:59that it's not in me i could never do it i'm gonna be in here the rest of my life regardless
39:06i don't have a chance to get out i'm not trying to appeal my sentence i'm trying to tell exactly
39:12what happened on the drive back to colorado she said if i take the blame for one and she took the
39:23blame for one that we would get out we would be together again when i said back then that i shot terry
39:32and candace or shot one of them or whatever it was it was a lie because i was protecting afton
39:40i loved her she manipulated me she never really cared about me like i cared about her
39:47it's okay to love somebody but just don't love too much
39:51it's not worth giving up your whole life just for love
39:54with michael claiming now that afton was the lone shooter it also kind of skews how i view him here we
40:07are 16 years later and now he's changed his story that hurts that he's done that now to me
40:15i respected him a little more for coming in and admitting his guilt and now that i hear that he's
40:22changed that that respect is not there anymore with regard to afton i always thought that she would
40:31change her story and blame michael she's only worried about how she's portrayed to other people
40:36one of the reasons why i changed my story i've grown up because of my faith there's no reason for
40:47me to hold on to it and fight it and fight it and fight it because you don't live forever you don't
40:54take this with you and the families need to know what happened because it hopefully will use closure and
41:00help them understand why it happened and what happened a sick twisted crime and i believe nobody deserves
41:09that nobody at all and every october i hold a vigil for them because they need to be remembered as
41:19beautiful wonderful people who helped everybody they could
41:23i'm sorry i'm truly sorry for everything that happened and i wish it wouldn't have i wish i could
41:32go back and change things i mean it took two seconds to ruin all these lives and it's just it's sad that it
41:44happened and i'll think about it every day i just would want the family to know how sorry
41:53i am and if this is what you want me to be punished with then i'm okay with that to afton i'd say just
41:59good luck and good riddance i have nothing for her i mean she knows what happened she knows who ruined
42:09whose life just wanted to know i wish the best for him but i want nothing to do with him because you
42:15just made it seem like i was nothing but a toy and that that's all i deserved
42:29you
