00:00The garden rescue team are on a mission to make garden dreams come true Charlie
00:11Dimock Lee Burkill Flo Hedlum and Chris Hull are here to answer your gardening
00:27emergencies feels disorganized a bit chaotic it's a bit of a shocker each week two of our designers
00:34will go head-to-head pick me and let's do this the garden we're gonna go with is and whichever
00:47designer loses the race is on helps the winner build the garden good idea did you get that on
00:53camera Lee said good idea Charlie amazing turning garden dreams open your eyes into reality today
01:11the team are taking on a functional but tired narrow garden in Winchester do you want peppers yeah go for
01:20yeah here we go two peppers let's get a bowl Lucy and husband Stefan met 10 years ago at university
01:29lived opposite each other on a corridor and kind of bonded over food in the kitchen I think we were
01:36big big foodies and we used to cook for each other every week yeah yeah not your typical student grub
01:42I think the first thing we could was venison casserole together yeah their passion for food has a
01:51particular focus I think we got into barbecuing during lockdown didn't we we were bouncing around
01:57the house and ended up just cooking outside every other day and kind of got a bit of a passion for it
02:01that way yeah and then we ended up doing Christmas dinner on it that year and that's become a bit of a
02:06tradition since what we got on the barbecue we've got puri puri chicken nice and the couple welcomed
02:13three-month-old son Alfie into their lives what's daddy cooking yeah it's always been like my pet project
02:24to do something with the garden and I think this year being on maternity leave I was like right this
02:29is what I'm gonna do this year get the garden sorted yeah but realizing it is really hard now
02:35Alfie's come along and that's kind of meant well actually quite a nice time to have a nice space
02:39outside for him sort of grow into and do some do some cooking and things of him outside later on as
02:44well but yeah the garden is just needing some help personally I think the garden is just looking a
02:53little bit tired it just sometimes I find a little bit depressing to be outside because it's just a
03:00bit tatty it's not somewhere you want to come sit and socialize with friends I think because we love
03:05to cook and we love being outdoors at the moment there's just no space especially when it comes to
03:13their one big love so we obviously love cooking on the barbecue but I think the thing that we don't have
03:19at the moment that'd be really useful is placed is to prep food outside store the charcoal store
03:25the smoking words those kind of things yeah it's always otherwise always like ferrying stuff in and
03:30out in and out and it's just a bit of a pain in bad weather putting mud all over the kitchen yes
03:34so I guess another thing that we really don't like about the garden is this kind of awkward slope that
03:43we've got here it just makes the space really well awkward to deal with yeah my grass is quite uneven
03:51and patchy as well isn't it yeah bit of a mess and I guess the far corner of the garden the problem
03:57we've got with it is this assortment of concrete and patio slabs it's a real mishmash I think yeah I
04:03think it's fair to say this this corner of the garden probably is a little bit of a disaster isn't it
04:07you know whilst we're quite outdoorsy people we don't really know much about gardens and planting and
04:12things like that and it's useful to get some help with what we can do with the garden the light that
04:16we get knowledge yeah we need the knowledge first and then we're going to go we really want the garden
04:26to be sorted out now because we've got the house to a state where we're really happy with it yeah and
04:32it just feels like this is the missing the missing link almost just to have a nice complete garden
04:38would be great cup of tea yeah let's get a cup of tea Chris and Flo this nice hmm are hoping their
04:53design will be the one to take the garden from tatty and tired to tremendous
04:58right slow got Lucinda and Stefan yeah and Chester with their hands on a something looks like they're
05:08incubating I think that looks like a massive barbecue barbecue isn't it yeah yeah yeah that's the clue
05:15isn't it definitely a clue I think let's have a look at their garden so quite a long garden very
05:21very long and this down here I mean they've got this patio at the back of the house but it looks very dark
05:25and shady doesn't it and they look like they've been trying to do a bit of guarding there yeah
05:30very patchy lawn very sad looking garden it definitely needs a bit of love absolutely so
05:37should we find out what they want definitely okay hi Chris hi Flo we'd love to have a garden
05:44dedicated to barbecuing growing our own produce and socializing it we were right barbecuing I mean a
05:51pretty big clue right yes and we'd love to have a dining table as well something that's nestled in
05:56amongst all the plants and somewhere we can sit with family and friends and really relax mmm there
06:01weren't a lot in this little garden yes they do it'd be great to have a dedicated kitchen area in the
06:06garden somewhere with the barbecue next to it where I can prepare food and cook it yeah yeah we're a new
06:14family too so it'd be really great to have sort of a garden that Alfie can learn how to to grow his own
06:19food and cook it as well now that's a good concept isn't it we love that you can grow it you can see
06:25it happening and then you're really proud of it and then boom it's on your plate so hopefully that's
06:30not too much to ask and we're really looking forward to seeing your designs there is a lot to pack into
06:35this narrow long garden so go on Flo tell me what's the budget it's 6,000 which is a good size budget for
06:43this size garden I think so too I have got loads of ideas for this one I can't wait like I'm gonna cook
06:49up something special do you see what oh that was a good one I know right not gonna be as good as my
06:54design though watch out Chris and Flo will create designs in line with the healthy six thousand pound
07:02budget Lucy and Stefan have to pick their favorite which the losing designer will help build the designers
07:10and top team of landscapers provide the labor for free leaving the entire budget to spend on
07:16materials and plants okay let's see what we've got welcome to barbecue central that's the name of the
07:31garden I've designed for you nice this is your garden the barbecue capital of Wessex let me take you on a
07:39journey and show you what it's all about I wanted to step out onto your patio but what I've done is
07:44I've introduced just a simple step along that edge to get rid of that weird awkward ramp that came up
07:49from the back gate that step down is gonna work far better than the ramp that we've got yeah I think
07:54that's gonna make a huge difference actually Flo's design includes a shed for the young family to store
08:00toys and barbecue equipment inside but having a shed near to the house is problematic because you don't
08:05want to look out and seat straight away so what I've done is I brought some planting very close to
08:11the patio very close to the house but I've also put the screen here in the middle of that bed which
08:17means I can mask this view yeah that's a really good way of using that corner isn't it hmm so what I've
08:23decided to do is to break it up into three different rooms the first one is that immediate area straight
08:29out of the house and then we've got this amazing middle zone now this is all about the barbecue
08:34cooking and growing produce so down this left-hand side we've got a really big six meter long raised
08:41bed and it's four foot wide in there you can be growing vegetables herbs fruit bushes anything you
08:48want that you can get on that barbecue I've given you a generous grow your own section these two raised
08:54beds I'm gonna put pollinating plants in there so some lovely pops of summer color the bees will be
09:00just crazy over it and then this is your section here for growing your own fruit veg that's nice I
09:08think this is the bit that you're gonna be really excited about this is gonna be a spot where you can
09:13barbecue prep your food all in the dry because this is a covered barbecue station oh that's gonna be
09:20really good yeah I love that would be nice not to use an umbrella yeah it's gonna be quite simple
09:25really nice rustic timber work with a corrugated steel roof but you've got your very own kitchen
09:32worktop underneath here and underneath that is going to be two little storage cupboards with
09:37stainless steel doors so they really are all weather and we also want to make you your very own bespoke
09:43dining tables I really like that yeah the midsection of Flo's design is more of an open space
09:49I've taken all the lawn out and replaced it with gravel which is low maintenance looks good wet or dry
09:57Chris has also swapped the original grass for something different I've got these amazing sandstone
10:03sets that are gonna link the garden together on a curve flowing through the whole space and then I've
10:09got other ones running horizontally across and what that does is it just gives you a little visual pause
10:15as you move into each zone but they also connect it all together I like how green the garden is yeah
10:20it actually really contrasts nice against the gravel the real star is this brand new porcelain patio with
10:27the sandstone sets around the edge and this is going to be where you catch the last of the evening
10:31Sun Stefan I know you really like your sort of architectural plants you really like the palm that you've got there so I
10:37wanted to give that a new lease of life and then complement it with more architectural plants around that area so I'd love to give you a tree for a
10:45fern in one of those corners on the shadier side there yeah I like how it's surrounded by all the plants it looks quite snug for the evenings
10:50so I put these two trellises here and we get to the patio barbecue central and this is where you guys are going to hang out you're going to kick back
11:01cook your barbecue prepare food have a social space for you and friends and family
11:06that's nice I really really love this garden I think it's got some amazing quirky details and I'd love to see it built
11:14so I hope you pick me I really like this design I would love for you to have this as your garden so
11:20let's do this it's gonna be really tricky to pick between those two actually yeah
11:24oh dear
11:25Chris is the kitchens here yeah and the kitchen I think looks really nice there yeah there's a nice amount of space to work with isn't there yeah really nice and then the back of the garden that seems to be where the patios are going to be
11:40slightly different though aren't they yeah Flo's has got that nice burglar in the corner which makes
11:45use of that that space nicely yeah but then I really like the slabs used in Chris's as well
11:50it's really tough have you got a leaning to which one you prefer no it's a really difficult decision
11:55between the two yeah hi Chris hi Flo thanks for two amazing garden designs we were bowled over by how
12:04you came up with two such different designs I guess starting with Flo's design I particularly loved all the
12:10pops of colors that you use throughout the garden oh yes trademark yeah you and your colors yeah yeah
12:17and Chris for me the obvious highlight is that kitchen area would be so nice not to get soaking wet
12:22whilst cooking Christmas dinner this year there's elements from both gardens that we absolutely love
12:26and if we could we'd pick and choose them from either one I mean they can't have both yeah add mine
12:32so drum roll Chris yes I'm gonna take that flow all day long I really really wanted this one
12:47actually yeah yeah no fair play I think you know is it the kitchen and the growing area is what won it
12:53exactly we can have a lot of fun building this oh definitely definitely yeah yeah and maybe you know
12:57struck up the barbecue afterwards oh yes now you're talking
13:01fortunately Ben and the landscaping team are ready to get cooking and sort this garden out sunshine
13:11oh
13:13okay then team we are here in Winchester hoping that sun comes around to visit us I don't know no it'd be too hot
13:23we want to keep the patio by the house we're then going to take this thing so there isn't a slope
13:31two areas of paving one by the gate and then the second one is at the top of the garden here but we
13:37do have a huge six meter long raised bed going in there wow not only that you've got this barbecue
13:45station at all not only that here we go again Chris would like us to make an outdoor dining table
13:52Jono me you and Monty we're gonna do two curved parallel lines you know through the garden up to
13:59the top paved area you know let's get the bigger in there strip everything back and crap on with it
14:04let's do it first job removing the ugly concrete slabs at the back of the garden it is yeah as always
14:18the team are keen to save as many plants as possible including this giant fatsia okay we've got as much
14:25roots out as I could now fill this gorilla bucket up with water we're gonna give it a nice drink and
14:34then Chris will come in and he's gonna put it in his new home small jobs done it's time for some big
14:42help to strip the lawn out look at that makes it a lot easier whilst the lawn gets stripped out Lee and
14:56Jamie have been working on the giant raised fruit and veg bed actually making some headway final part
15:04of the puzzle and we can start putting a bit of this waste soil into it and then we can start moving on to
15:09the the barbecue enclosure I'm looking forward to that something a bit different while the back of the
15:20garden is prepared for its patio work can get underway in the kitchen area you stick to digging holes I'll
15:29stick to doing building stuff with the posts in place work can begin on the frame beautiful we're
15:44ready out back to start laying down some paving so yeah trying to get the mixer on we get the slabs down
15:50with the frame now complete it's time for Lee and Jamie to fit the roof to the kitchen area so now we're
16:01just putting the tin sheets on we've cut all the joists so we're gonna do a sheet then add the joist
16:07to another sheet add the joist until we get all the way to the end work is also underway laying the
16:15small decorative tiles called sense is it going Jonah a great man thing yeah enough to love it with
16:24the first day coming to an end the landscapers give it one more push to get the slats onto the back of
16:31the kitchen edge the rear patio with sets as well as creating a step from the front patio to lose the
16:46slope so right the end of the day the boys have just put them in the last slab down now and then
16:52wait for the designers they'll be here in the morning the next morning in Winchester here we are
17:09floating the former capital of England yes where the ancient kings and queens used to hang out exactly
17:15well we are going to be the king and queen of barbecues today oh I can't wait to get that grill
17:22on and start flipping those burgers sounds good flow oh wow this is good for a king and queen absolutely
17:31loving these sets doesn't it just draw you through exactly it's got the curve yeah you know I love a
17:37curve that is a it's a work of art isn't that beautiful we're looking pretty good it's quite far
17:41along this I'm loving that yeah yeah the kitchen's coming along well I mean you say that at the minute
17:46it's a shelter there isn't much of a kitchen in it so that's your job that's my job yeah okay what's
17:52my job today then well there's lots of bits and bobs that I'd really like you to focus on the veg beds
17:57oh yummy yummy there is an amazing grapevine over there so I think that needs a bit of love and maybe
18:02some wires to train it along and then I've got the very fun job yeah I've given you some flat pack
18:07furniture to erect I kind of like flat pack I mean you know it it pushes some buttons for me
18:12but I love the adventure exactly and it's all going to come together and we're going to make a beautiful
18:17garden absolutely all right I'm going to get my flat pack energy going go on you do it
18:22now we are in a really good place with this garden you can see all of the bare bones are in
18:28we've got part of the shelter built but although that's pretty good there's still a lot of work to do
18:33because I'm going to be focusing all my efforts on this barbecue station and now this is what I
18:39think won me the garden and I've got some very special cabinets for it so I'm going to take my
18:45time and get that just perfect and then we move into the productive area where I want to give Lucinda
18:52and Stefan loads of produce space where they can grow together as a family but another big thing that
18:58needs to happen in this zone is we need to make them a bespoke table and Flo is going to be working
19:02on all that flat pack furniture and what's really lovely is these sets just breaking up the garden
19:08into different rooms and then with these other sets crossing through in the curves it just links
19:13you through the garden and shows you exactly where you need to walk with no workable space inside the
19:20team will have to build all the furniture outside the garden starting with the flat packs I'm just
19:26going to channel all my energy into following the instructions number one and getting it done really
19:32quickly so pray for me everybody Lee has been tasked with building a dining table from oak getting
19:41the wood into the right condition is the first task once I've got it all plain down sanded cut it to
19:48length it's going to be 1.5 long so it's not going to be too heavy to move around we've got some lovely
19:53metal legs we're going to fasten to it I think it's going to look really nice once it's all made sorted out
19:59I'm going to give it a nice coat of oil that should make the grain pop and hopefully Chris will be happy
20:04with it but there's no point in dining furniture if there's no garden kitchen right what we doing
20:12then boss right well this is the most important bit yeah the garden don't tell Flo that because
20:17those benches are very important too yes my bench is important but this bit is crucial it's a big part
20:23of the design so we need to get it right yep and it's a bit more fiddly isn't it because we've got
20:27those cabinets to build in we have this thing that's still doors we do and we've got the porcelain
20:31countertop going all out on this one you've put a lot into this one I know I was thinking
20:36so 600 outside to outside then you do cement board straight on top no is that what you're saying or not
20:41yeah I'm just trying to work out what the inner bit is I got yeah makes sense posts framework then
20:48we can think about all the fiddly bits and pretty fine it awesome look at that it's perfect
20:54I'm almost at the end of this one been fairly straightforward only 10 screws
21:03two chairs to do I mean what could go wrong hey what could go wrong
21:08next to join the whole garden design together is the arrival of the plant life you know what
21:20this means don't you oh I know yeah look at that magic whoa loving it love this very architectural
21:28right yes yes but I love the clashing yeah well you know you've got to have a bit of contrast yes
21:34but it is it's got a very a very stylized unique look it's not too over the top no no those moody
21:40purples yeah the hookahs are cool very well then we've got those then we've got some other
21:45architectural plants got these little yuckers look at them they are cute aren't they yeah it's all
21:51about getting the contrast of foliage around the garden and then of course there's the food bit
21:56well this is the bit I want you focusing on yes yes yes so obviously we've got some chilies got
22:01some sage and mint and the rosemary tucked in there um and then what about these big boys at
22:07the back yeah banana plant banana height and right back there I've got the biggest surprise of them
22:13more oh that's my massive tree fin oh yeah oh yeah oh come on look at that banana it's good isn't it
22:32beautiful what do you think we'll get some fruit no time soon stick it in the garden it's lovely
22:39with the plants off the van Flo is taking a break from building the flat packs to help edge a planting
22:47border I'm laying these sets down to create this curved edge sets are these small squares used for paving
22:58they can sometimes give a cobbled effect if used in a certain way but they're really nice they're made out
23:03they're made out of natural stones so no two are exactly the same but that's lovely that that gives
23:09it the real kind of natural rustic feel to it and it does take a bit more time to obviously lay because
23:17they're smaller size units but they look really good and as they weather look even better
23:25there happy with that the guys are going to cement them in bring them up to the same level and voila job done
23:45meanwhile Chris's bespoke kitchen unit is starting to take shape this is the framework for the countertop so
23:53this is where the porcelain tiles are going to sit but first we've got to get this all screwed in
23:57then we can cut the legs and we know what we're really working with you're working with me best in
24:03the business well second best just going to try out my chair with the table
24:11yeah
24:13leah i just thought i'd come and supervise
24:17no just check it out just see how they work together it's beautiful
24:21yeah you like it look at that yes oh it's wrong color though
24:25oh it's got wrong color chair send them back you have to take them all to pieces
24:29i know something isn't quite working is it
24:31come back in the box send them back
24:33so you're going to oil this
24:35yes yeah
24:37it's a bit of linseed
24:38oiled linseed
24:39yeah just linseed it all
24:40mmm
24:41you can just bring grain out and just protect it a bit
24:42no it's going to
24:43yeah i'm not going to touch it because i don't want to stain it before it gets oiled
24:46but yeah i think dinner will shortly be served
24:49this is so annoying i thought it would all just peel off
24:59oh
25:01it's nothing more satisfying than taking the protective coating off something
25:05oh
25:06the noise isn't quite as nice but
25:09look at how nice beautiful and shiny that is easy to clean
25:13and it's going to stand out on that beautiful barbecue over there
25:17with half the day gone the garden is prepared to receive gravel
25:24and the kitchen unit is ready to be brought in
25:28i'm most looking forward to the kitchen area
25:30i think it looks fantastic i'd really like to prep the food outside and put it on the barbecue
25:35and then serve it up outside straight away rather than having to come indoors again
25:39all right all right
25:41that's going in
25:42all right and then we'll
25:44i'll take it
25:45i guess my only worry is whether there's going to be enough space to store off the wood and the charcoal
25:49right
25:51there we go
25:52yeah and if there's enough space to store your aprons and oven mitts and all that other paraphernalia you've got
25:58and then to you a bit is it
26:03you need to get out
26:05ready
26:06we'll trap you in
26:07there we go
26:08now obviously we've still got to level this up and there's a lot of work to do to finish it
26:13but it's pretty good in position
26:15a few left over sets are used to level things out and the unit can be cemented into its permanent home
26:28while lee adds a protective layer of oil to the oak table attention in the garden turns to the finer details
26:35hey i know
26:37what do you think
26:38it's gorgeous i love it love the stainless steel
26:41yeah it's a bit of a statement but the garden's looking all right but it's smacking something pretty obvious isn't it
26:48yeah yeah um more gravel
26:51no no more gravel plants like plants
26:53so look i've got my wires
26:55my first job now is to
26:57oh
26:58get on to the vine
26:59gonna tame the vine
27:00tame the vine
27:01and then
27:02and i'm gonna start bringing some of the big plants in now
27:05yeah cool all right
27:06all right ready
27:08first of chris's architectural plants is this large feature tree
27:12come on then let's get it in its
27:14you talking to me or the fern
27:15the fern
27:16go on
27:17come on
27:18oop
27:19flo also has her hands full with a grapevine
27:24okay i'm just wearing the vine at the moment
27:27just for a bit of fun
27:29but actually it's a really healthy robust plant
27:33and there's a lot of it so i'm gonna need some really strong wire
27:37good tension to hold it on this fence here
27:41it's probably enough to go round that side as well
27:44which would be lovely
27:46in fact it's planting puzzles everywhere you look
27:53sometimes you just gotta sit and stare
27:55figure out where something's gonna go
27:58meanwhile
27:59flo is getting a helping hand to install the wires to support the grapevine
28:03maybe if you go to the end
28:05and pull
28:06pull the down bit
28:07yes
28:08so the top comes a bit tighter
28:09yes
28:10yeah
28:11yeah
28:12perfect
28:13perfect
28:14lee is giving the kitchen a porcelain work top
28:16to match the patio
28:17and chris is finally ready to plant his feature fern
28:22this beast right here is my key feature plant that sits right at the end of this garden
28:29now tree ferns are quite unusual plants because a lot of people haven't seen these before
28:35they're from New Zealand and Tasmania and what's really interesting about them is that when you buy them they often come with no roots on the bottom because all of the roots are actually on the trunk itself
28:50and because it's not got the roots you don't have to get it that deep it's just enough to stop it toppling over
29:03you can just gently tease these open and over time they will start to sit down naturally again but because it's been wrapped up still a bit like a shuttlecock at the minute
29:15now when you're looking after your tree fern especially when it's just getting established
29:19you need to keep it watered if it's hot weather like this
29:22and what you can do is just get a hose water down the trunk
29:26or just water from above and it will run from the crown down the trunk
29:30you just want to make sure that stays moist
29:32especially when it's just been planted because it hasn't put any of its fibrous roots out into the soil below
29:38other than that you should just enjoy them
29:42look after them then you get these beautiful fronds cast in lovely shadows all over your patio
29:49it's an amazing amazing plant
29:54Chris's design also includes an extensive raised fruit and vegetable bed which Flo is taking charge of
30:01there's nothing better than growing your own fruit and especially when it's not a fruit that is readily available in the markets or the supermarkets
30:11and Red Goodsbury is one such plant so if you can get hold of a plant buy it and get it in your garden
30:20so like most cane fruit they're quite easy to grow they need good drainage good access to sun and lots of watering
30:31this one is grown on a frame so it's cordon trained which is really good if you're tight on space
30:38and in a bed like this which is hasn't got that much depth and where you want to put in a lot of plants
30:43it's a really good choice because you can train it and keep it in this shape as it gets bigger
30:49I hope Lucy and Stefan are really excited about this because it's an unusual one but a lovely fruit to have
30:56I hope we're going to be very happy
30:58back on the other side of the garden
31:01this corner of the garden where it gets the last of the evening sun is all about the architectural plants
31:08but to set those off you need some really beautiful underplanting
31:12and this heuchera forever purple is perfect for that
31:16and what's really good about this heuchera is it kind of gives a jungly effect
31:20which works really well with the tree fern and the formiums that I've got in here too
31:24and you get these beautiful flowers that come up and arch over
31:28and it also softens up the edges of the paving as well
31:32but what I think works really well here is the contrast between the Santolina and the heuchera
31:38it just makes this corner a garden pop
31:41and heucheras are relatively easy to look after
31:44they're happy in some shade and partial sun
31:48and they don't mind it a little bit moist
31:51but they probably wouldn't want to be in a sunny dry exposed position
31:55yeah I think these are beautiful here
32:01Flo has more edible plants for the veg bed
32:04Chris has chosen another really interesting plant for this section
32:09it's called a pepper plant
32:11and the reason why it's called a pepper plant is because
32:14I'll demonstrate to you
32:16chew it
32:18initially it's a bit herby
32:21and then the pepper kicks in
32:24when it hits you at the back of your throat
32:26it's really very nice
32:28if you like chilies
32:29if you like that hot sensation
32:31then it's absolutely
32:33mmm
32:34100% enjoyable
32:36and you can use it in cooking
32:37you can use it as a tea
32:39and
32:40it's also a very attractive evergreen plant
32:44in the spring
32:45there's clusters of
32:47really pretty cream fragrant white flowers
32:50and a plant that's going to look good in the depths of winter
32:53a really good structural plant
32:55while the kitchen unit gets some finishing touches
33:00Chris has another tree for the garden
33:02this beautiful tree is Circus canadensis forest pansy
33:06the eastern redbud
33:08and it has the most beautiful red leaves
33:12in autumn they turn the most amazing colours
33:15you can already see some of the veining starting to come out
33:18on the leaves there
33:19but what also is very special about this plant
33:22is that in spring
33:24when there's no leaves on the tree
33:26beautiful pinky buds emerge all over the stems
33:31but not just on the tips of the leaves
33:33they come from the actual hardwood
33:35all the way over it
33:36and it is a real spectacle
33:38now it's a great tree for this end of the garden
33:40because it has such a glorious habit
33:42as it grows up
33:43its branches really arch over
33:45and you have the multi-stem look
33:48so as it gets taller
33:49you can cut some of those lower stems
33:51show off the branches
33:53and let this underplanting really thrive
33:56and I think that's what this garden needs
33:58we've got a good mix of evergreens
34:00but then you need these deciduous plants
34:02that give you that flash of colour
34:04in spring or in autumn
34:06to give you some seasonal drama
34:08so I think Stefan and Lucinda
34:10are going to love this one
34:11and Flo has another hot plant for the produce area
34:18look how vibrant and colourful this chilli plant is
34:22it is absolutely weighted down with chillies
34:25and Flusi and Stefan are really into chillies
34:28and that's great
34:29you know they might get through them in a season
34:31but when the plant starts to die
34:33because it's an annual
34:34they can pick the chillies
34:35they can take them inside
34:36string them up
34:37dry them
34:38put them in oil
34:39crush them
34:40use them in their cooking
34:42so you know
34:43they don't have to die on the plant
34:50as the day nears the end
34:52Chris has found the perfect spot
34:53for Stefan and Lucie's Fatsia
34:56right
34:59now this Fatsia
35:00has had a hard time recently
35:02because it was down here
35:03where the barbecue station is
35:05but I really wanted to save it
35:07so the guys have lifted it
35:08put it in a bucket of water
35:10to keep its roots happy
35:11and now I'm going to replant it
35:13right on the edge here
35:17it's a great plant for this corner of the garden
35:18because it gets plenty of shade over here
35:21so it's not going to dry out too much
35:23and what's good with transplanting it
35:24is that because we're at the end of summer
35:26coming into autumn
35:27it's not going to get too stressed
35:29with loads of heat
35:30so I think it should survive
35:32and be absolutely fine
35:33with the day almost over
35:40all that's left is to bring the dining table in
35:43up here
35:44yeah if we go just past that line
35:46as well as Flo's chairs and benches
35:52and move the barbecue to pride of place
35:54in the bespoke outdoor kitchen
35:57the final feature
35:59it's perfect new home
36:01hey
36:04how are you feeling about this?
36:06I am loving it in here
36:07it feels really good doesn't it?
36:09they're going to be blown away
36:11yeah I think
36:12compared to what was here
36:13the amount of usable garden
36:15that they've now got
36:16it's just ridiculous
36:17yeah it's modern
36:19clean lines
36:20love the kitchen
36:21of course they're going to love the kitchen
36:23I know it's a bit
36:24it's a bit over the top
36:25but they deserve that right?
36:26they can grow their own food
36:28sit out
36:29and enjoy it
36:30I love what you've done
36:31with all the produce in this bed
36:32I mean
36:33the good thing about it
36:34is it's something that they can experiment with
36:35next year as well
36:36isn't it?
36:37and you know your planting scheme
36:38is beautiful
36:39I mean obviously I love the dark colours
36:41but tree farm is
36:43golden feature
36:45yeah
36:46but yeah
36:47the thing is
36:48it's a lovely garden
36:49but it's for them
36:50it's for them
36:51yeah not us sadly
36:52shall I go and get Stefan and Lucy?
36:53yeah yeah bring them out
36:54bring them out
36:56two days ago
36:57Lucy and Stefan's garden
36:59was tatty and uninspiring
37:01with nowhere for them to comfortably cook
37:04or eat as a family
37:05with baby Alfie
37:08now with a budget of £6,000
37:11it's been transformed into barbecue central
37:15complete with dining and seating areas
37:18with a variety of eye-catching plants
37:21but will it be all they wished for?
37:24there you are
37:25now you're together
37:26and you can hold each other's hands
37:27if you like
37:28there you go
37:29now you really wanted a garden
37:31that celebrated your absolute love
37:33of cooking outdoors on your beloved barbecue
37:36you wanted an outdoor kitchen
37:38you wanted an area to grow produce
37:40you wanted a big socialising space
37:43and a spot to catch the last of the evening sun
37:46and most importantly
37:47you wanted a garden
37:48that you could grow into as a family
37:50and one you could nurture together
37:51for years to come
37:52so please
37:54without any further ado
37:56open your eyes
37:58wow!
37:59oh my god
38:00wow!
38:01look at that
38:02look at that
38:03oh wow
38:07look at the table
38:08oh
38:09this is it
38:10there's things everywhere
38:11that's nice
38:13oh that's a good reaction
38:15oh look
38:16look at the chillies
38:17yeah
38:18oh
38:19the tree fence
38:20the tree fence
38:21yeah
38:22of course that caught your eye
38:23wow
38:24god it's like a tropical paradise almost
38:26you know that palm
38:27that was already yours
38:28some of these shrubs
38:29they were already there
38:30but they just needed some love around them
38:32aww
38:33and the cooking area
38:34well obviously it's quite like that
38:36yeah
38:37yeah
38:38I can't believe it's our garden
38:40before the garden lacked anywhere
38:42for the couple to enjoy their favourite pastime
38:45now they can relish in their very own covered barbecue space
38:50complete with outdoor kitchen
38:52oh my gosh
38:53do you think this is fit for your cooking requirements?
38:56it's better than the kitchen inside
38:58yes
38:59that's what we wanted to hear
39:01of course they love the kitchen
39:03that was the whole point of this garden
39:05and it is stunning
39:06it's big
39:07it's bigger than I thought it was going to be
39:08but you're definitely going to use all the space
39:10yeah I'm going to use that space definitely
39:11yeah
39:12well you've got space on top
39:13and then you've got porcelain tops
39:15that match the porcelain paving at the end
39:17that's it
39:18I've noticed the lights as well
39:20well I know
39:21I'm a big fan of lights
39:23when it goes dark
39:24the leaves will automatically turn on
39:26I really love it yeah
39:27just make some light as well
39:28yeah and this uh
39:29this faccia here
39:30with the big leaves
39:31this was
39:32along here
39:33before
39:34but we've actually managed to lift it
39:35I love all the ferns as well
39:36yeah so we made a tiny raised bed in there
39:38just to
39:39to retain the soil a bit
39:40but it looks lovely with them spilling out over the edges
39:42oh
39:43and what do you think about these sets
39:44that sort of
39:45go through it
39:46I love it I love that they're grey as well
39:47yeah
39:48like the fans are grey
39:49well it ties in with the house doesn't it
39:50yeah yeah
39:51yeah it breaks up the gravel
39:52really nicely
39:53I really like like contrast of textures
39:55like the gravel the porcelain and the sets
39:57and the wood is
39:58yeah
39:59previously the garden had nowhere to grow fruit and vegetables
40:02for themselves and baby Alfie
40:04all that's changed with the introduction of a giant raised growing bed and a bespoke table for the family
40:11great
40:12so Flo's worked very hard on this bed today so she's been putting in all these different edibles
40:18you've got a bit of a herb garden as well and I don't know if you've noticed this along your back fence
40:25so yeah this is your vine and she's actually tidied it up and put wires through your fence post for it
40:29it's so unruly that vine but it looks so nice now
40:31it looks so nice now
40:32it does
40:33yeah
40:34now the good thing about this bed is pretty generous
40:36so it's the sort of thing where you know we've put a few things in now but we are quite late in the season
40:40so this is next year I think you can really make it your own
40:43yeah yeah I'm already planning I think what we need to plant
40:45yeah
40:46what sort of things do you want to grow?
40:47tomatoes, courgettes
40:48oh yes
40:49I'd like to do pumpkins as well
40:50pumpkins?
40:51yeah
40:52oh they're going to take over
40:53yeah grow a massive pumpkin
40:54yeah
40:55I think Alfie would really like that
40:56that would be cool
40:57yeah
40:58oh they love the veg area I'm happy
40:59there's nothing better than picking your own tomato when it's like really warm and being sat in the sun
41:03yes
41:04and you can grab it from there
41:05chuck it straight on your plate on your very new table
41:08wow
41:09it's cool isn't it?
41:10the table is awesome
41:11I love the legs
41:12again it's something that I'd like inside
41:14yeah
41:15as well as outside
41:16it would be great inside too
41:17now this was one area but you've got a whole other area here
41:22the end of the garden was once a barren concrete jungle
41:25now it's bursting with plant life and a porcelain patio sun trap
41:32wow I love this I love the purple hues love that
41:36it's quite a bold contrast but it fits with like we were saying earlier that sort of exotic-y architectural plant theme
41:42and we've got to talk about the tree fern right?
41:45yeah
41:46it's a big one
41:47it's a big one
41:48it's a big one
41:49it is uh yeah it is really really cool
41:52now this is obviously the sunny spot at the end of the day isn't it you really wanted a seating spot here
41:57yeah yes because before it was just well no space it was abandoned and yeah
42:01and now you've got the beautiful porcelain the sets to tie it all together
42:04so nice
42:05it's really nice
42:06I love the porcelain tiles there
42:08it's good isn't it?
42:09they're modern and very sleek
42:10but it's a great spot to chill out
42:12and what's really nice about being down here is you get that view back to the house it's brilliant isn't it?
42:16yeah it's it looks like a completely different garden
42:19yeah I can't believe it
42:20I think you're going to be spending hours down here aren't you?
42:22oh yeah I'm going to be spending everything down here
42:24yeah
42:25now obviously I didn't build this garden all by myself
42:28with the amazing team and the amazing Flo
42:31hi guys
42:32hi hi nice to see you
42:35what do you think?
42:36absolutely love it
42:37it's incredible
42:38it's so nice
42:39it's beautiful isn't it?
42:40the crisp hole
42:41yeah
42:42glow up
42:43oh the crisp hole glow up that's got a ring to it I like that
42:45yeah
42:46you're welcome
42:47now does this garden tick all your boxes?
42:49yeah 100% I think more as well
42:52and some more
42:53yeah absolutely love it
42:55I think we did a good job
42:56yeah

43:12yeah
43:13I think we've got a long list of people going to be knocking on our door
43:16I'll get on in five minutes if Chris and Flo want to stay
43:18haha
43:19yeah
