Hi guys, Neil Taffin here from Golf Monthly and welcome to this iron play tips video in which
00:11
we're going to be taking a look at how to hit the punch shot more effectively. I'm going to
00:15
be joined by Luke Peterkin from Honma. He's a Honma's custom fitting specialist here in the
00:20
UK. He's also a PGA pro and he's got some great advice on how to play this shot more effectively,
00:25
more repeatably. Guys, if you're new to the Golf Monthly channel, please do hit the subscribe
00:29
button to make sure that you don't miss any of our videos. Hit the like button if you like what
00:33
you're watching and comment below. We'd be interested to hear your thoughts. But let's
00:37
head out now onto the golf course here at North Hans and find out about Luke's punch shot tips.
00:42
Okay, so fifth hole here at North Hans. We've got about 160 yards and it's slightly into the wind.
00:48
Probably not enough really today to force you to hit a punch, but still a good one to be able to
00:53
show everyone how to do it. Luke, what's the thinking? How do you bring that trajectory down?
00:59
So again, if we use our, say, stock iron shot as a benchmark to work from, so 155,
01:07
maybe a seven iron, just a stock me seven iron. So I would take then my length of swing and my swing
01:13
speed of my stock shot and then dial it down a bit. So I wouldn't swing back as far and I wouldn't
01:19
apply as much club head speed. Both of those already will change my trajectory quite a bit.
01:24
Okay. And especially with this shot where the pin is right at the back, we've got lots of green to
01:29
work with. So actually, this is quite a nice shot to employ because those effects that we're going
01:33
to have on our trajectory will mean that the golf will roll out that little bit more. Okay. So it's
01:38
a nice shot to play if there's no danger in front of the green. We've got two green side bunkers there,
01:42
but we're going to be nice in between those. And try and run it up there. Yeah. So usually you'd be
01:46
hitting a seven iron from here, but you're going to club up? Yeah. Club up a little bit again to counter
01:50
the fact that we've dialed down the swing speed and the swing length. Okay. Let me give you six iron
01:55
then. Okay. Yeah. Perfect. So not only that, there's also a couple of address changes. Yeah,
02:02
a couple of setup changes. Yeah, exactly. So I would take my ball to target line and then work a little bit
02:10
left of that. So basically... So sitting feet left of it? Feet slightly left. Why do you do that?
02:16
So similar to where we said about the shorter pitch shots. So we're already kind of setting,
02:20
pre-setting our hips into our kind of impact position because we're not using as much speed.
02:26
So it gets us delivering the club in a, in a, in a consistent way. Right. Okay. In other words,
02:32
I can keep my club face much more stable by keeping my hips a little bit more open
02:37
with this, with this shot that we're choosing. But, but crucially, shoulders are not open to
02:44
the target line. No, not, not so much at all. I'm keeping those actually fairly parallel to the
02:48
target line itself. Okay. It's just the hips to give me the space to then not get into any of those
02:54
type of habits where we're flipping the hands over. Okay. Good. All right. Give us a, give us a go.
02:58
Okay. So slightly left. My ball position will be slightly back of centre as well, but that's about it.
03:05
Shorter swing and less speed.
03:12
And then it will chase up there. Perfect. So you can see from that, Luke, have another go for us,
03:17
just how easy Luke makes that seem to play that shot because you're taking speed out of it,
03:22
because you're taking more club, you can make a more sort of relaxed, easy going swing at it.
03:27
It should be one that every golfer out there can really play and control.
03:30
And it's got plenty of run on it when it's hitting the ground, hasn't it?
03:36
Yeah, exactly. So we're able to cover a yardage of 155 yards, but like you say,
03:40
in a very controlled, repeatable way. Yeah. And we can apply that to many different scenarios.
03:45
So there you have it. Some great advice there from Luke on how to hit the punch shot. Really simple,
03:49
really easy. Something that every golfer should be able to do. Guys, thank you very much for watching.
03:54

03:58
have any thoughts yourself about how to hit the punch shot? We'd be really interested to hear
04:02
what you have to say. Also do keep your eyes peeled for the other videos in this series. As Luke
04:07
mentioned, we've got some great advice on how to hit full and half pit shots, as well as some advice
04:11
on how to practice, some ball striking tips to keep your eyes peeled for those. But for now, from North
04:16
hands, it's goodbye.
