At 23 years old, Matteo hopes one day to take over his family's farm.
00:07
This polyculture breeding farm of about 40 dairy cows is located in Belgium, not far from Brussels.
00:15
Matteo plans to be a caregiver for two years,
00:18
a status that allows him to maximize his chances of accessing financial assistance necessary to take over the farm.
00:26
I was in Belgium, in order of price.
00:29
When you have 23 years old and you want to take a farm,
00:32
I don't think the bank would agree that you would leave a million or a five million,
00:36
if not more, to take a farm,
00:38
which is not really rentable.
00:43
Only 12% of farmers are under 40 in the EU.
00:47
The average age is 57 years.
00:49
This ageing presents a risk for food safety, warns the European Commission.
00:54
Last month, the Commission presented a strategy to support generational renewal in agriculture.
01:00
It proposes to include in the next common agricultural policy a start-up pack of up to 300,000 euros
01:07
to help young farmers get started.
01:10
Other measures include the opening of the Erasmus Programme for Young Entrepreneurs to Farmers
01:15
and the creation of a European Land Observatory to promote access to land.
01:20
The objective, to double the proportion of young farmers in the EU by 2040.
01:26
For Matteo, the best way to encourage young people to start or stay in agriculture is to ensure fair prices.
01:33
Even the prices will be paid as much as possible.
01:39
It will motivate people.
01:41
It's because we are always in it and we are passionate,
01:45
but to produce a lait for 40 cents while it costs 50 cents,
01:49
it will motivate someone to do it.
01:51
To produce meat at low price because we don't want to pay,
01:56
with an emprunt or a million on our heads,
01:58
we will find someone who will be motivated to do it.
02:01
Matteo stressed that consumers have an important role to play by buying local products.
