00:00From the most trusted journalists at Comedy Central, it's America's only source for news.
00:10This is The Daily Show with your host, Jon Stewart.
00:15Hey, welcome to The Daily Show.
00:39My name's Jon Stewart.
00:40We've got an unbelievable show for you tonight.
00:42Later on, we're going to be joined out here, as Veterans Day is coming up, by Representatives
00:47Chris Deluzio and Pat Ryan, co-chairs of the Democratic Veterans Caucus.
00:53They'll be out here in a little bit.
00:56Why not?
00:59They'll be showing us how to make their favorite dishes for Veterans Day.
01:08But let's start tonight.
01:12Let's start tonight's show with the big news out of Washington on the shutdown.
01:28By the way, tonight's show will be brought to you by I Can't F***ing Believe It!
01:36I Can't F***ing Believe It!
01:51For when the I Can't Believe It Edvard Munch scream emoji
01:55doesn't quite convey how much you cannot f***ing believe it!
02:10And what, you ask, is it?
02:14Well, it is the Democrats.
02:21You remember the Democrats.
02:23They shut down the government last month for a very particular reason.
02:30Any deal must secure the extension of the ACA tax credits.
02:35This is about my party saying enough is enough.
02:38Democrats will not back down.
02:40Do not stop fighting.
02:42We're in this fight until we win this fight because we know we're on the right side of this fight.
02:46It's literally life or death.
02:48So Democrats have three words for this.
02:51No f***ing way.
02:53Well, funny f***ing story.
03:10Yes, Charles Schumer's three words were no match for these five other words.
03:18Democrats cave on the shutdown.
03:20Excuse me?
03:23Cave on the shutdown?
03:25Huh?
03:27Not this forceful, young, authentic Democratic Party
03:32that hangs out down by the river
03:35and curses in what appears to be a cerulean blue blazer.
03:44And I say, in a f***ing way.
03:52No, they f***ing caved on the shutdown.
03:56Not even...
03:57Not even a full week removed from the best election night results they've had in years.
04:04Seven Democratic senators and a friend writer voted with their Republican counterparts
04:11to end the shutdown and reopen the government.
04:14And did they get their extended health care subsidies?
04:18Democrats wanted the deal to include extending subsidies for the Affordable Care Act.
04:23Instead, they got a promise to vote on it at a later date.
04:26I cannot f***ing believe it!
04:31You had the wind at your back.
04:35Election victories all over the country.
04:38The new Sydney Sweeney movie, Box Office Bupkis.
04:41Apparently, her new MAGA fan base didn't show up in droves
04:47to see a biopic about a lesbian professional boxer
04:50who overcomes domestic violence to live her truth.
04:54Who could have seen that coming?
04:59Democrats, you sold out the entire shutdown
05:02not to get what you wanted,
05:05but for a promise
05:07to not get what you wanted,
05:10later.
05:12Where in the art of war?
05:16Where?
05:16Hold on.
05:17Where?
05:18Where in the art of...
05:20Okay, here it is.
05:21I got it.
05:24Sun Tzu said,
05:26never press your advantage.
05:30It's unseemly.
05:36Fighting's hard.
05:37How about a snap?
05:45I can't f***ing believe it.
05:48And by the way,
05:49what good does a promise of a Senate vote
05:52even do for you, Democrats?
05:56You don't control the Senate.
05:59Do you even know how this s*** works?
06:02Let's just say, for schnicks,
06:05that you managed to win a vote in the Senate,
06:08which you haven't done all year.
06:11Do you know what happens then?
06:13I mean, give me...
06:14Hold on one second.
06:15Give me the thing.
06:16I want to show you.
06:16I'm just a bill.
06:18Yes, I'm only a bill.
06:20And I'm sitting here in Capitol Hill.
06:26Well, I can't stay mad at Bill.
06:30But the point is this.
06:32Let's say, let's just say,
06:34you pass a bill out of the Senate
06:36that you don't control as Democrats.
06:39Guess what happens then?
06:40Now I go to the House of Representatives
06:44and they vote on me.
06:45You go to the House of Representatives!
06:48But they don't vote on me
06:49because Democrats don't control
06:50the House of Representatives either.
06:53But let's live in your
06:55eight-senator fantasy land,
06:56and you do.
06:58Let's say you somehow convince
06:59old Towelick McBabyface
07:01to hold that House of Representatives vote,
07:06and you win that one as well.
07:09Guess what happens then?
07:11Well, then I'm off to the White House
07:15where I wait in a line
07:16with a lot of other bills
07:18for the president to sign.
07:22The president!
07:28Yeah, yeah.
07:30You get it past the Senate,
07:32you get it past the House,
07:33and then the president
07:34of the United States!
07:37Right? You remember him?
07:38This guy?
07:39Obamacare is a disaster.
07:41Yeah, that f***ing guy!
07:42The Obamacare is a disaster guy.
07:45The guy who spent the weekend
07:47posting about how Barack Obama
07:49is collecting millions of dollars
07:51in royalties from Obamacare,
07:53a fact that Trump picked up
07:55from an eight-year-old satire article.
07:58Democrats, you gave up the only leverage you had
08:04without getting commitments
08:06from Trump or Mike Johnson.
08:10I cannot f***ing believe it!
08:17Surely someone in the party
08:19understands that offering a vote
08:22in the Senate without a commitment
08:24that it would pass
08:25or that the House
08:27would even take it up
08:28is an empty offer.
08:31Offering a vote in the Senate
08:32without a commitment
08:34that it would pass,
08:35without a commitment
08:36that the House would even
08:37take it up
08:38is an empty offer.
08:43This guy gets it.
08:47Tim Kaine.
08:49Tim Kaine.
08:49You don't see him
08:51as one of the eight voting yes.
08:54Virginia Senator Tim Kaine
08:55was a yes.
08:57I can't f***ing believe it!
09:00And for what?
09:04There's got to be someone
09:05in this party who understands
09:06what's at stake
09:07with these expiring subsidies.
09:09Senator Dean Shaheen!
09:11I had a meeting
09:12with some constituents
09:13last Friday
09:14when I was in New Hampshire.
09:15One was a man.
09:17He said,
09:17if I didn't have
09:18that insurance
09:19through the Affordable Care Act,
09:21I would not have
09:21gone to the doctor.
09:22I would not have gotten
09:23my cancer treated.
09:25And I would be dead by now.
09:27That's what this fight is about.
09:30Now that's somebody
09:31who's not going to roll over.
09:33That is somebody
09:34who has the moral clarity
09:36and she voted yes,
09:39didn't she?
09:40Jane Shaheen decided
09:41to vote yes.
09:42Yes.
09:42That was the most
09:55weirdly coordinated boo.
09:58Not only was it coordinated,
10:02here was the most beautiful part
10:04about that boo.
10:05It started at a low timber
10:07and then it grew
10:10and then a staccato.
10:12Ooh!
10:23F***ing Jane Shaheen!
10:25And you know,
10:27what she did
10:28that's almost worse,
10:30after a month
10:31of standing on principle
10:32because of the needs
10:34of her constituents,
10:35she now uses
10:37those same constituents
10:38as her cover
10:39for cowardice.
10:41When I talk to my constituents
10:42in New Hampshire,
10:43you know what they say to me?
10:44They say,
10:45why can't you all
10:46just work together
10:47to address the problems
10:48that are facing this country?
10:50Really?
10:51Even the cancer guy?
10:52He's saying that now?
10:53That's not what he was saying before,
10:55but now he's like,
10:56look,
10:56what I said earlier
10:57about wanting to live,
10:58I didn't know
11:00that the alternative
11:01was a spirited
11:02bipartisan cooperation.
11:03I was just thinking,
11:07I want lungs.
11:12Ugh!
11:14And by the way,
11:15doing exactly
11:16what the Republicans wanted
11:17isn't working together.
11:19That's not working together.
11:21That's just doing what,
11:22oh, Mr. Sawyer and I
11:24worked together
11:25to paint this fence.
11:26No!
11:27He made you
11:28f***ing paint it!
11:29And then he just
11:32jumped in at the end
11:33and was like,
11:33we can't free Jim,
11:34it's not bipartisan!
11:36Yeah,
11:36that's what happened.
11:38You don't remember the book?
11:39That's what I...
11:40I didn't remember it either,
11:44but one of the writers...
11:44You might be wondering
11:48to yourself there,
11:49well,
11:49where's the Democratic leader?
11:51Mr. No F***ing Way
11:52Chuck Schumer
11:53during all this.
11:55But ladies and gentlemen,
11:56he is on your social feeds.
11:58Glasses in the ready position.
12:00Putting on a show!
12:01Democrats have been fighting
12:03to get the Senate
12:04to address the healthcare crisis.
12:07This bill does nothing
12:08to ensure that that crisis
12:10is addressed.
12:11I am voting no,
12:13and I will keep fighting.
12:14I don't f***ing believe this.
12:16And I mean that now literally.
12:18Chuck Schumer,
12:19your protestation
12:20be not believable.
12:22Look,
12:23either all eight senators
12:24who voted to capitulate
12:26coincidentally
12:28are not up for re-election
12:30in 2026,
12:31or Chuck Schumer
12:33worked behind the scenes
12:35to give in to the Republicans
12:37while still protecting
12:39vulnerable Democrats,
12:41including himself.
12:44You know,
12:44that's right.
12:47You know,
12:48humorously after the election,
12:50I mentioned
12:51to a couple of political analysts
12:52in the afterglow post-coital
12:54about how the Democrats
12:56were going to squander
12:58their hard-earned
13:00electoral victories.
13:01And I guess
13:02the question next
13:03for both of you is,
13:04how will they squander it?
13:06How?
13:07How will they
13:08piss this away?
13:13You know,
13:14the only thing I love more
13:15than seeing my face on TV
13:16is seeing it
13:17on a webcam
13:17with no filters.
13:21Talk about
13:22needing health care.
13:23My God.
13:27Is jaundice contagious?
13:29What the?
13:31But it's a fair question.
13:33How would Democrats
13:35piss this away?
13:36Apparently,
13:37they did it
13:38something like this.
13:39acting.
13:50This is a world-class
13:52collapse
13:53by Democrats.
13:55It would be like
13:56being up ten points
13:58with three minutes
13:59left to go
13:59in a game
14:00and still finding
14:01a way to miraculously
14:02lose it
14:03for the fourth time
14:04in just one month.
14:09For those of you
14:11who don't follow
14:12the New York
14:13Football Giants,
14:14because let's say
14:19you value
14:20your time
14:20on this earth,
14:22this is a football team
14:25that on three
14:25separate occasions
14:26this season
14:27has blown games
14:28that statistically speaking
14:30based on their
14:30sizable leads
14:31vis-a-vis
14:32the amount of time
14:32left in the
14:33athletic contest,
14:34they had a
14:3495 to 99%
14:37chance of winning.
14:37I refer you
14:39for instance
14:40to this
14:40win probability
14:41chart from
14:42Sunday's game
14:42against the
14:43Chicago Bears
14:43where you can
14:44see the
14:44New York Giants
14:45chance of victory
14:46climbs to 97%
14:49before they trip
14:50on their own
14:51dicks
14:51and fall down
14:56a flight of stairs
14:56and again
14:57I don't want to
14:57get too inside
14:58football here
14:58but you're not
14:59supposed to do that.
15:00I have not
15:10had a good
15:10weekend.
15:14Now for those
15:15of you who believe
15:15that professional
15:16sports and politics
15:17are an inept
15:18comparative
15:19not only
15:21did the Democrats
15:22and Giants
15:23lose in the
15:24same
15:24I can't
15:25f***ing believe
15:26it manner
15:26they sound
15:28the same
15:28doing it.
15:29It's natural
15:30and appropriate
15:31to feel deep
15:32disappointment
15:33disappointing
15:34disappointing outcome
15:35it was not the
15:36result many of us
15:36wanted.
15:37Want to get the
15:37results that you
15:38hoped for
15:38and came up
15:40short?
15:40It never feels
15:41good to come
15:41up short.
15:42We came up
15:42short and that
15:43was a tough
15:43one.
15:44You learn
15:44and you prepare
15:46to do better
15:46in the future.
15:47You're always
15:48learning and
15:48trying to be
15:49better.
15:49Not enough
15:50wins.
15:51Not enough
15:51wins.
15:51We will
15:52win.
15:53We will
15:54win.
15:55We will
15:56win.
15:57We won't
15:58rest.
15:59We won't
16:00rest.
16:10Inspired yet?
16:12So please
16:13Democrats
16:14I do not
16:16understand.
16:17Explain this
16:18to me like I
16:19eat with my
16:20feet.
16:20How do you
16:22explain though
16:23to your
16:23constituents
16:24why it was
16:25worth it to
16:26put up this
16:26fight for so
16:27long when in
16:28the end you
16:29did not get
16:29your key
16:29demand?
16:30Because it
16:31wasn't working.
16:37First of all
16:41how are we
16:41being ruled
16:42by the only
16:43old people
16:45who don't
16:46stubbornly
16:47cling to shit
16:48whether it's
16:48working or
16:49not?
16:50that's the
16:52whole point
16:52of being
16:52an old
16:53person.
16:57What kind
16:59of an old
16:59person are
17:00you?
17:01Well maybe
17:02it is time
17:03to give up
17:04my driver's
17:04license.
17:06I mean
17:07to be fair
17:09I am a
17:10menace.
17:10and second
17:14of all
17:14it was
17:16working.
17:17It was
17:18working.
17:20Never
17:20never
17:21never
17:25has the
17:26gap
17:27between this
17:28administration
17:29and the
17:30people it
17:31claims to
17:32serve
17:32been so
17:33disgustingly
17:34visible
17:35than during
17:36this
17:37shutdown.
17:37this week
17:39while the
17:40Trump
17:40administration
17:41was at the
17:42Supreme Court
17:43demanding that the
17:44court let them
17:45withhold food stamps
17:47from hungry
17:48Americans.
17:49Trump himself
17:50was at
17:51Mar-a-Lago
17:52with an all-you-can-eat
17:53shrimp and
17:55synchronized
17:56swimming buffet
17:57while the
17:58president of
17:59Argentina
17:59danced the
18:00night away
18:01securing the
18:02$20 billion
18:03we recently
18:05gave his
18:05country.
18:06And I gotta
18:07say
18:08for $20
18:09billion
18:09you'd think
18:11he'd dance
18:12better
18:12than
18:15leprechaun
18:16jerking
18:17elephants.
18:17By the way
18:37apologies to
18:39the
18:39elephant.
18:43I am not
18:44trying to
18:44disrespect.
18:47probably an
18:50elephant watching
18:51that going
18:51like
18:52who's
18:52well
18:53what kind
18:56of an
18:56elephant
18:56dick.
19:03Point is
19:04this
19:04don't get
19:04distracted.
19:07Americans
19:08were finally
19:09seeing the
19:10gap
19:11between how
19:12Donald Trump
19:13bends
19:14reality
19:14and actual
19:15day-to-day
19:16reality.
19:17this
19:17shutdown
19:18has
19:19focused
19:19America's
19:20attention
19:20away from
19:21his gift
19:22for
19:22distraction
19:23and onto
19:24stark
19:25actualities
19:26and seeing
19:27through
19:28many for
19:29the first
19:30time his
19:30bald-faced
19:31lying.
19:32Can you
19:32just answer
19:33that question
19:33that tariffs
19:34have led
19:34to inflation
19:35they have
19:35led to an
19:36increase in
19:36cost of
19:37living for
19:37most Americans.
19:38We have no
19:39inflation.
19:40Except that
19:41we have
19:41inflation.
19:43And normally
19:44we have
19:45no inflation
19:46goes the way
19:47of they're
19:47eating the
19:48cats and
19:48dogs and
19:49I'm
19:49suing
19:50Rupert
19:50Murdoch
19:50because I'm
19:51not on
19:51the Epstein
19:51list and
19:52all the
19:52other lies
19:53that Trump
19:54deploys in
19:55his reality
19:55distortion
19:56arsenal.
19:57But miracle
19:57of miracles
19:58during the
19:58shutdown.
19:59The old
20:00songs ain't
20:01hitting like
20:01they used
20:02to.
20:03Football
20:03fans loudly
20:04booed as
20:05Trump was
20:05shown on the
20:06Jumbotron during
20:07halftime at
20:07the Lions and
20:08Commanders game.
20:09Do you know
20:29how unpopular
20:31you have to
20:31be to be
20:32booed by
20:33football fans
20:34while swearing
20:35in troops?
20:36And by the
20:37way not
20:38just any
20:38football fans
20:39football fans
20:40who still
20:40use the
20:41term Redskins
20:42and not
20:44even with
20:44respect to
20:45the team
20:45just casually.
20:46This is what
20:51the Democrats
20:51have squandered.
20:53A country
20:53finally shaking
20:55off Trump's
20:56Jedi mind
20:57tricks and
20:58saying no
20:59these are the
21:00f***ing droids
21:01we're looking
21:02for.
21:03And instead
21:04of pressing
21:04that advantage
21:05perhaps neutralizing
21:07Trump's reality
21:07distortion field
21:08for good the
21:09Democrats just
21:10suddenly went
21:11droids?
21:12I guess we
21:14aren't looking
21:14for those
21:15droids.
21:15but you'll
21:17help us
21:17find them
21:18later right?
21:20They squandered
21:21their leverage
21:22sapped their
21:23voters enthusiasm
21:24and snatched
21:25defeat from
21:27the jaws
21:28of victory.
21:29And it's just
21:31too bad
21:31that we are
21:32now stuck
21:33with these
21:34leaders that
21:34we have on
21:35that side
21:36and there's
21:37nothing that
21:37can be done
21:38about it.
21:39This just
21:39in the New
21:39York Giants
21:40have just
21:40fired head
21:42coach Brian
21:42Gable.
21:43So you're
21:56saying there's
21:57a chant.
21:59When we come
21:59back Congressman
22:00Chris DeLuzio and
22:01Congressman Pat Ryan
22:02will be joining
22:02us.
22:02Don't go away.
22:03Welcome back to the
22:17program tonight.
22:18My guests are
22:20Iraq War veterans
22:21who now serve in
22:22Congress and are
22:22members of the
22:23House Armed Services
22:24Committee.
22:25These are
22:25welcome to the
22:25show representatives
22:25Chris DeLuzio of
22:26Pennsylvania and
22:27Pat Ryan of New
22:28York.
22:28Come on!
22:29Welcome to the
22:43program.
22:46Thank you for
22:47coming.
22:47We wanted to have
22:47you guys on.
22:48It's Veterans Day
22:48is tomorrow and
22:49we wanted to see
22:50you guys.
22:51I did also, I'd be
22:52remiss by asking you
22:54guys, the Senate
22:57caved the House.
22:58Democrats did not.
23:00No.
23:09Is there any kind
23:10of, I don't know
23:11where you guys
23:11connect in the
23:12whatever,
23:13Representative's
23:14gym or any
23:14that kind of
23:15thing, like when
23:16you walk by
23:17Schumer, is there
23:18ever any, you
23:19know, pussy?
23:20You know,
23:20I don't know.
23:24So maybe a little
23:25more this week.
23:26All right.
23:26Yeah.
23:27How, now, the
23:29House has not
23:30been in session at
23:31all since the
23:32shutdown.
23:33It's been like
23:33seven, seven
23:34weeks.
23:35Pathetic.
23:36Have you guys
23:36spent your time in
23:37Washington or just
23:38back in your
23:38districts?
23:39Back and forth and
23:40we're on the
23:40Armed Services
23:41Committee.
23:41So we've had some
23:42work to do down
23:42there.
23:43But we haven't
23:43had votes since
23:44the middle of
23:44September.
23:45No votes.
23:46No votes.
23:46And you know,
23:47the big, obviously
23:47the conspiracy
23:48theory is, oh,
23:49Mike Johnson
23:50doesn't want to
23:50swear in the
23:52representative who
23:53was from
23:54Arizona because
23:55that's the vote
23:56that makes it so
23:58that they have to
23:59then vote on
23:59releasing the
24:01Epstein files.
24:02Is that, I mean,
24:03that's,
24:04or is that,
24:07is that, you
24:08don't have to
24:09answer this.
24:09100%.
24:11It's plausible.
24:12More than
24:13plausible.
24:13They're waiting to
24:15run out the clock.
24:15There's another
24:16special election
24:17happening in
24:17Tennessee.
24:18And if that guy
24:19gets sworn in
24:20with Adelita
24:21Grijalva from
24:21Arizona, then it
24:23neutralizes the
24:23numbers.
24:24So they are
24:25running, yes,
24:26agreeing, agreeing
24:27to that.
24:28You guys are
24:29like some sort
24:32of weird old-timey
24:33Greek chorus.
24:35They're like,
24:36it's like, you
24:36know, a
24:37Peanuts cartoon
24:39where every now
24:39and then you cut
24:40to the audience
24:40and they're like,
24:41yay!
24:42Boo!
24:44Yeah, they're not
24:45going to do anything.
24:49I won't,
24:50let me ask you this.
24:53How surprised
24:55were you,
24:55how taken off
24:56guard were you
24:57by the developments
24:58of this weekend
25:00from the Senate?
25:01Did it take you
25:02off guard?
25:03I wish I could
25:03say it did.
25:05And yet,
25:05I think this is
25:06what we've come
25:07to expect from
25:08this,
25:08leadership
25:09and from
25:10what the Senate's
25:10been doing.
25:11They did not
25:12stand their ground.
25:13And it's a deal
25:14that I think
25:14it's a bad deal.
25:16I think it's weak.
25:17It doesn't even
25:18seem like a deal.
25:19It seems like
25:20a nothing.
25:21It's pathetic.
25:22It is.
25:23I literally have
25:24folks in my district
25:25getting letters
25:27in the mail.
25:28Their premiums
25:28are doubling,
25:30tripling,
25:32and they are,
25:33like, folks
25:33understand actually
25:34what's happening.
25:35I've had many
25:35folks just last
25:36weekend home
25:37say, hold your
25:39ground.
25:39Hold your ground.
25:40We know this is hard.
25:41We know it's
25:42complicated.
25:42But we literally
25:44cannot afford to pay
25:45triple.
25:45I mean, it's already
25:46way too high as it is.
25:47And what gives them
25:48any confidence
25:49that the Republicans
25:50will all of a sudden
25:51go like, oh, okay,
25:52you reopened it.
25:53So now we're going
25:54to reach across the aisle
25:55in bipartisan agreement.
25:56They haven't done it once.
25:57They've run the table.
25:59You know, 74,
26:0075 million Americans
26:02voted for the Democrats.
26:03They have zero representation
26:05in Senate, House,
26:08Judiciary, and Executive.
26:09You guys in the House,
26:11it's the closest
26:12that I can remember it being.
26:13And yet you're not allowed
26:14to bring up any votes.
26:16Democrats don't have
26:17any committee chairmanships.
26:19It's unconscionable.
26:20And there's not even
26:21an agreement to have
26:22a vote in the House.
26:23Even if they had
26:24this agreement,
26:25there was going to be
26:25a vote in the Senate
26:26and it somehow passed.
26:28There is nothing
26:28making Mike Johnson
26:29give us a vote on that
26:31to extend the tax credits.
26:32None of it.
26:33To me, I mean,
26:33that on its own
26:34tells you this is a weak deal
26:35for something we were
26:36fighting for our constituents
26:37and their health care.
26:38And I think we both learned,
26:40me and the Superior Service
26:42of the Army.
26:43The Navy guy.
26:44Him and the Navy.
26:44You have no idea
26:46what was going on backstage
26:47between these two.
26:48We got Army giving me
26:50swag on Army.
26:51We got Navy giving me
26:52swag on Army.
26:52I turn around,
26:53no geese, headlocks.
26:54It was terrible.
26:57We both learned,
26:58when in charge,
26:59take charge.
27:00Right.
27:00And I strongly disagree
27:02with everything
27:02that the Republicans
27:03are doing,
27:04but at least they understand
27:05when you have power,
27:07use it.
27:07Right.
27:08Now, they're using it
27:09for evil.
27:09They're using it
27:10truly for evil.
27:11Right.
27:11But we have to understand,
27:13I think we get this,
27:14a lot of our younger
27:15colleagues, frankly,
27:15get this,
27:16when in charge,
27:17take charge.
27:18Like, let's be clear
27:20what we're against,
27:21but also make clear
27:22what we're going to fight
27:23for when we're back.
27:25And when,
27:25it's going to be when,
27:26when we're going to be
27:26back in charge.
27:28I don't doubt that
27:29for a second.
27:31The,
27:32what astonishes me,
27:35I think the space
27:36was created
27:37for Donald Trump
27:38because of the disconnect
27:39between the sort of
27:42insulated world
27:43of Washington,
27:44the disconnect
27:44between the lawmakers
27:46and the needs
27:47of the people
27:48they purport to represent.
27:49I think that gap
27:50is what allowed
27:51his rise,
27:53that dissatisfaction.
27:55To see these folks
27:58in Senate leadership
27:59not understand that,
28:00honestly,
28:02I think might be
28:03the most shocking part
28:04of this equation.
28:06And,
28:06and,
28:07does the leadership
28:08in the House
28:08understand that?
28:09Are,
28:10do you deal
28:10with the Senate at all?
28:12Look,
28:13our states
28:13are both different,
28:14right?
28:14And so there's some of it.
28:16You're Pennsylvania
28:16and New York.
28:17But both swing states.
28:18You,
28:18you guys are not
28:19in deep blue areas.
28:21Our districts now
28:22are the most competitive,
28:23yeah.
28:24Right.
28:24The majority in the House
28:25runs through whether
28:25we can hold
28:26and win in these districts,
28:27and we do.
28:28And by the way,
28:28we know how to win
28:29in tough districts.
28:30Yeah.
28:31But,
28:32their,
28:34the theory of their case,
28:36as far as I can tell,
28:38is people like you
28:39will lose
28:40if you stand your ground
28:41on principle.
28:42That,
28:42you have to be
28:43the so-called
28:44moderate centrist
28:45that is going to reach
28:47across the aisle,
28:48not realizing
28:48they didn't reach
28:49across the aisle,
28:50they surrendered
28:50across the aisle.
28:51Yeah.
28:51I don't know
28:52any constituents of ours
28:53that want us
28:53to just wilt.
28:54They want us
28:55to stand our ground
28:55for something that matters.
28:56Right.
28:57Our health care
28:57of our region
28:58and yours,
28:59like,
28:59people's health care
29:00is a real thing
29:01that is bankrupting families.
29:02They're going to roll
29:03the dice
29:03on buying a,
29:06paying for a policy
29:07they may not be able
29:08to afford.
29:08Right.
29:09Or maybe showing up
29:09in the emergency room
29:10because they skipped out
29:11on health care.
29:12Right.
29:12That is something
29:12they want us to fight for,
29:13and we have been.
29:14And to see what happened
29:15on the other side
29:16in the Senate
29:16is just,
29:17it's weak.
29:18And I think,
29:19like,
29:20there's this old theory
29:21of left,
29:23right,
29:24progressive,
29:25centrist,
29:26moderate.
29:26It's bullshit.
29:27Yeah.
29:27People want to know,
29:28are you going to actually
29:30fight for me
29:31when it matters
29:33or are you going to cave?
29:34And that is the thing
29:36that matters,
29:36especially in this moment.
29:38But the folks
29:38that have been
29:38in the bubble of D.C.
29:39for longer than
29:40some of us
29:42have been around,
29:42they don't...
29:44Longer than even
29:45I've been around.
29:46Yeah.
29:46I'll be honest with you,
29:48I could go down there
29:49and kick their asses
29:50physically.
29:51Well, and...
29:52Many of them
29:53are hollow like birds.
29:56If you will allow me.
29:58I think...
29:59Please.
29:59And you have.
30:01And I actually,
30:01like,
30:02coming into Veterans Day
30:03tomorrow,
30:03Yeah.
30:04I just want to,
30:04like,
30:05personally,
30:06your fight
30:07for the PACT Act,
30:08you came down
30:09and destroyed
30:10Ted Cruz,
30:12just shamed...
30:14shamed the Republicans
30:16and I'm telling you,
30:19I had not...
30:20Both of us
30:20had toxic exposures
30:21in our service.
30:22Oh, really?
30:23And I had not
30:24gone to the VA
30:26for over a decade.
30:27And when the PACT Act
30:28finally passed...
30:29Oh, wow.
30:29It really meant a lot to me.
30:31It meant a lot to,
30:32you know,
30:32a million veterans
30:33signed up after that bill.
30:35That makes me so happy.
30:36It would not have happened
30:37without you.
30:37It's a fantastic program.
30:38And are they...
30:39And thank you both
30:40for signing up
30:42for that duty
30:43because that's the thing.
30:44And veterans,
30:45I think,
30:45understand this
30:46in a way that
30:47maybe some of the
30:48legislators don't
30:49because when you guys
30:51came home,
30:52the idea that you had
30:53to fight
30:53for benefits
30:54that you had earned,
30:56a lot of Americans
30:57are all of a sudden
30:58realizing,
31:00oh, shit,
31:01the government
31:02is antagonistic,
31:04not just agnostic
31:06to my needs,
31:08antagonistic.
31:09And that's something
31:10that I think
31:10I found
31:12with the veteran communities,
31:14it was really
31:15dispiriting for them.
31:15And I don't know
31:16if you guys felt that way,
31:17but that the government
31:17is antagonistic.
31:18Well, and look,
31:19it's not just
31:19it's tough to get into the VA
31:21and the PACT Act
31:22made that better.
31:23And I echo what Pat said.
31:24Thank you for your work
31:25to help make it happen.
31:26You know,
31:26a lot of politicians
31:27who voted to send
31:29guys like us
31:29to places like Iraq
31:31spending trillions
31:33all of a sudden
31:33want to count pennies
31:34when it's time to care
31:35for the veterans
31:35they sent to fight.
31:36Man.
31:37And, you know,
31:38Patrick, wow.
31:41And it's, look,
31:42it's a lot of the politicians
31:44we are battling with
31:45now in Washington, right,
31:46are people who wrap
31:47themselves on the flag
31:48and they're, you know,
31:50the chicken hawks
31:50and the draft dodgers
31:51vote for a war
31:52and then won't vote
31:53to fund the health care
31:53for the guys
31:54they sent to fight.
31:55That's who we're up against.
31:57It's wild.
31:58It must be frustrating.
31:59So, and this is interesting
32:00for you guys
32:01because you are in those
32:02swing districts.
32:03you guys are,
32:05the idea that somehow
32:06Democrats have to prove
32:09their love of country
32:10versus this sort of
32:13paper patriotism
32:14that I see on the right.
32:15It's performative
32:16oftentimes.
32:18And, and the idea
32:20that the onus
32:21is on you guys.
32:22Do you feel that as well?
32:24I mean, I think
32:25people on the right
32:26who we run against
32:27and who fund elections
32:28against us
32:29would have that.
32:30I know both of us,
32:32we take no lecture
32:33for anyone who,
32:34number one,
32:35tried to overthrow
32:35the government
32:36on January 6th.
32:37Right.
32:37Okay?
32:38Sure.
32:38I mean,
32:39a little blip,
32:41a little blip.
32:42Which the vast majority
32:43of them did.
32:44Right, right.
32:45And we serve with people
32:45who I think
32:46are oath breakers
32:47who are part of trying
32:48to overthrow
32:48the Constitution.
32:49Right.
32:49There's a guy in Pennsylvania,
32:51a member of Congress,
32:51who was central
32:52to that scheme,
32:53voted against certifying
32:54the results in Pennsylvania,
32:56a congressman named
32:56Scott Perry,
32:57who went on
32:58some radio interview
32:59and said that
32:59Democrats hate the military,
33:01said the guys and gals
33:02who served
33:02who then go into
33:03elected office
33:04did it for just
33:05a credential.
33:05It's an oath breaker.
33:06So we don't take a lecture
33:07from patriotism
33:08on guys like that.
33:09No way.
33:10Let me ask you a question.
33:13When you're on the retreat
33:18for Pennsylvania
33:19House of Representatives
33:20lawmakers
33:21and you guys are
33:22in the tents at night,
33:25how personal
33:29does this get?
33:32Is it hard?
33:32When you have somebody
33:33that's saying
33:34something like that
33:35along you
33:35and your feelings
33:36about that are clear,
33:37how personal
33:38have these divisions
33:40gotten?
33:43I think probably
33:44in olden days
33:44you'd have a scotch
33:46and work it out.
33:46Well, I decided
33:47I'm going to the guy's district
33:48holding a press conference
33:49and coming for a seat.
33:50So that's the way to run.
33:53Now let's get to
33:54some of the priorities.
33:56I'm fascinated now
33:58that, you know,
33:59so much of the talk
34:00about these programs,
34:01whether it be
34:02SNAP program
34:03or these things
34:04that for the most part
34:06are people that work jobs
34:07or are elderly
34:09or are disabled
34:10or are children.
34:12And veterans.
34:12And veterans.
34:13The vast majority
34:15are that.
34:15There's a very small percentage,
34:17some say 5%,
34:196% of able-bodied Americans
34:21who are getting these things,
34:22but we don't know
34:22what their situation is.
34:23They could be felons
34:24who have trouble
34:25getting work.
34:25Whatever it is,
34:28that seems to be
34:29for them
34:29the core of their
34:31this is the tragedy
34:33of this country
34:33is these moochers.
34:35And this is the waste,
34:36fraud, and abuse
34:37in America.
34:37America, and this is
34:38what we have to stop.
34:40Yet they hand
34:40a trillion dollars
34:41to a defense department
34:43that's never passed
34:44an audit,
34:44and the rank and file
34:46that you guys know this
34:47suffer from oftentimes
34:49food insecurity themselves
34:50that are serving
34:51in the military.
34:52How the f***
34:52does that compute?
34:54It doesn't...
34:55For veterans,
34:57we have tens of thousands
34:59of active duty
35:00service members
35:00and millions of veterans
35:02on SNAP food stamps
35:04right now
35:05in the United States
35:06of America,
35:07number one.
35:08Number two,
35:09as we speak,
35:11the president
35:12of the United States
35:12is actively suing
35:14in the Supreme Court
35:15to block food
35:18going to those veterans
35:19and 42 million Americans,
35:22one in eight people.
35:23And they're the patriots?
35:25Yeah.
35:25They're the ones
35:26that stand up
35:27for liberty and justice
35:28for all?
35:29It is bullshit.
35:30Yeah.
35:30It is complete bullshit.
35:31The whole thing
35:32is so mind-boggling.
35:34How...
35:35What is the pressure?
35:38You know,
35:39in terms of that
35:39military budget,
35:40like, what is the...
35:41Where does the pressure come from?
35:41Is it defense contractors?
35:43Who is it that lays
35:44the hammer on everybody
35:45to get these things through?
35:47Well, look,
35:48there's very little competition.
35:49There used to be 51
35:50prime defense contractors
35:52back in the 90s.
35:53There were five now.
35:54Five?
35:55Five.
35:55Okay, and I could say...
35:56We could spend the whole night
35:57talking about different ways
35:58we get gouged.
35:58Let's take the C-17,
36:00okay, transport aircraft.
36:01Sure.
36:02Soap dispensers.
36:03The report that we saw,
36:057,900% markup
36:07on soap dispensers.
36:08Okay, so imagine
36:09what happens
36:10with everything else.
36:11I have flown on a C-17.
36:13My hands were never cleaner.
36:16But you multiply...
36:17Think about the cost
36:18that we are all paying for that.
36:20Here's the crazy thing
36:20about a C-17,
36:21and you guys know,
36:22like, it's this giant cargo plane,
36:24and you fly in it,
36:25and there's no...
36:26Like, they didn't put up
36:27paneling, like, sound.
36:29No.
36:29Like, we went on a USO tour
36:30in a C-17,
36:31and they were like,
36:32you know, bring a winter coat
36:34and shorts.
36:35Like, they said
36:36the weather changes
36:37in a C-17
36:38depending on the altitude
36:39you're at.
36:40I never even knew
36:41you could actually
36:42use the bathroom
36:43in a C-17.
36:44Like, I never had.
36:45What were you doing?
36:46I held it.
36:46No, I mean...
36:47But you hit on something else,
36:49so, John,
36:49which is that
36:50it is a corrupt system.
36:52Yes.
36:53There are...
36:54These five companies
36:55have tremendous power
36:57of their purse.
36:59After Citizens United
37:00in particular,
37:01they pour money in,
37:02and both of us
37:03have refused
37:04to take corporate PAC money
37:05for this exact reason.
37:07And...
37:07And it puts you
37:09in a disadvantage.
37:10Well, it doesn't, though.
37:11Right.
37:12Honestly, it doesn't
37:13because, one,
37:15we can both sleep at night
37:16and know we're doing
37:17the right thing,
37:18but, two,
37:18our constituents
37:19actually understand
37:20how corrupt the system is.
37:21Right.
37:22And they want leaders
37:23that are going to
37:24actually stand up to that.
37:25So when...
37:26I mean, I actually remember
37:26in the Armed Services Committee
37:28two years ago,
37:30the F-35 jet program
37:31is probably the biggest
37:32boondoggle of my lifetime.
37:331.7 trillion.
37:34Something like that.
37:35It's insane.
37:35And their operational
37:36readiness rate
37:37is, like, 30%.
37:38Wow.
37:39And so,
37:40a bunch of us
37:41younger members,
37:42and it was actually
37:43it was bipartisan,
37:44all veterans who had served,
37:46were saying,
37:46this is crazy.
37:48We have to get leverage
37:49on Lockheed Martin,
37:50who's the company.
37:52The amount of, like,
37:54swarm of lobbyists
37:55that descended on us
37:56as we tried to ram
37:58through this amendment,
37:59and we didn't succeed
38:00in getting it through
38:01because we just got overwhelmed.
38:03Now, we've continued the fight,
38:04but that's just one example.
38:05Now, what was the amendment
38:06attempting to do?
38:08So, specifically saying,
38:10and this is the crazy part,
38:11we pay them trillions of dollars,
38:13and Lockheed Martin
38:14keeps the intellectual property
38:15for the stuff
38:16that our tax dollars pay for.
38:19So, all the amendment did
38:20was say,
38:20we're paying you
38:21an ungodly amount of money.
38:23We Americans
38:24should own
38:25the intellectual property
38:26that we're paying you for,
38:27and that was not
38:28able to be passed through.
38:30I mean, this is...
38:31It's like the worst episode
38:32of Shark Tank ever.
38:35What do I get for the trillion...
38:37I'm asking for a trillion dollars
38:38for my company,
38:39and you don't get anything.
38:40You get planes
38:42that don't actually work,
38:43and you don't own them.
38:45And, like, this problem
38:46is a...
38:46It plays out
38:47on a bunch of systems
38:48and you name it
38:49where the troops
38:50can't even fix their own stuff
38:51because of these contracts
38:53where it's got to be repaired
38:55by the company
38:56or their subcontractor.
38:57It costs the public
38:58a lot of money.
38:59It hurts readiness
39:00for the troops
39:00because, again,
39:01they can't fix stuff
39:02that they would know
39:03how to do
39:03because of these contracts.
39:05So, this...
39:06This Veterans Day coming up,
39:08instead of anything performative,
39:09what do you want to say
39:11to the American people?
39:12What do you ask
39:13of the American people
39:14for those that have been
39:16brave enough
39:18to sign up,
39:19to take that oath,
39:20to do that,
39:21those who are doing it actively,
39:22and those who have done it
39:23in the past?
39:24What would you say?
39:25Look, stand solid
39:26for a strong and funded VA
39:28that is there
39:29to take care of veterans
39:29for care that we have all earned,
39:31for those benefits
39:32that we've earned.
39:33Let's make sure the VA
39:33is strong and there
39:34for veterans
39:35all over the country.
39:36Right.
39:37I agree with that.
39:42And I have to say,
39:44Trump ran on
39:46supporting and helping veterans
39:48and on ending
39:51the forever wars.
39:52Right?
39:53He has done
39:54the 180-degree opposite.
39:57He has fired
39:5880,000 people at the VA.
40:00In my own VA,
40:0120 beds closed
40:03that deal with
40:04mental health crisis
40:05and addiction recovery,
40:06closed,
40:07that we've been fighting for
40:08to get reopened.
40:10And that, you know,
40:12and that happened,
40:12I know, in Pittsburgh.
40:13It happened around the country.
40:14And then,
40:15I think the most serious thing
40:17I would say to the country
40:18is don't send
40:19our most precious resource,
40:21our young men and women,
40:22into harm's way
40:24on some chicken hawk BS
40:26from a five-time draft dodger
40:29who does not understand
40:31what selfless service
40:32means whatsoever
40:33ever and hold them
40:34accountable for that.
40:37I'm going to feel
40:37the better of myself.
40:38Gentlemen!
40:39Representative Tom Ryan,
40:41Representative Chris Delusio,
40:43we're going to take a great break.
40:44We'll be right back after this.
40:45Go.
40:46Hey, everybody,
41:02that's our show for tonight.
41:03But before we go,
41:04we're going to check in
41:04with your host
41:05for the rest of the week,
41:06Mr. Josh Johnson.
41:07Josh!
41:09It's Josh Johnson!
41:13Josh Johnson,
41:13what do you got planned
41:14for us for the week?
41:16Well, we will be diving
41:17into more of these crazy
41:19airplane cancellation stories.
41:20They say that even
41:21after the shutdown ends,
41:23it could take weeks
41:24to get back to normal.
41:25And, I mean,
41:25if this isn't fixed soon,
41:27then who will I spend
41:29Thanksgiving with?
41:41Well, Josh,
41:43I'm sure it's going to be fixed
41:44instead of just a couple of weeks.
41:48You're probably going to
41:49have to worry about it,
41:49so I can...
41:51Yeah, but what if it's not?
41:52I mean,
41:53I'll need to find someone local
41:56to spend...
41:57Give me your hand.
41:58...spend Thanksgiving
42:00with maybe
42:01one of my lovely
42:03Daily Show co-workers.
42:05All right,
42:14you can come to my house
42:15for Thanksgiving if you want.
42:16That's...
42:16Your house?
42:18Jewish people do Thanksgiving?
42:23You do...
42:24You're not going to have ham, though.
42:26No, we're not going to have ham.
42:28No, I was talking about
42:29Ronnie Chang.
42:30I heard he got good
42:30pool, everything.
42:32I was hoping you could
42:33ask him for me
42:34because he can't say,
42:36no, you're his boss.
42:37All right, I'll do my best.
42:38Josh Johnson, everybody.
42:40Here it is.
42:41Your moment is in.
42:42Wait.
42:42Dr. Oz said that
42:43millions of...
42:44Who?
42:44Dr. Oz.
42:46There are millions of fans
42:48who are going to leave
42:49under the ACA.
42:51Is that being looked at
42:52as if it makes it so
42:54that people that are
42:55on the ACA
42:57are more
42:57simplating the number?
42:59That's like the most random way
43:00to start
43:01a question
43:02on a serious topic.
43:05Nobody
43:05who's serious
43:07in this country
43:08takes Dr. Oz
43:09seriously.
43:10No one.
43:12Sorry.
