00:01:00In this issue of BMI's Special Edition, we will focus on the art of drifting performed by the Drift King himself, Keiichi Tsuchiya.
00:01:09We'll go through all six basic techniques essential to drifting, and further analyze how Tsuchiya is using these techniques from various camera angles.
00:01:19Let us guide you to the world of the Drift King's Drift Bible.
00:01:23First of all, we'll take a look at how a drift machine should be tuned and modified.
00:01:32Looking at this S14 Sylvia with limited modifications to only the suspension area, you can say that drifting is not about power.
00:01:41Going sideways relying on only brute power is not what Tsuchiya aims for.
00:01:45So how should a beginner set up his or her machine to drift like the king?
00:01:50Okay, so what's the least amount of tuning you need to drift?
00:01:57We had lots of stuff done to our car right here, but you don't need to go all crazy to start drifting.
00:02:02First of all, you have to start with the suspension.
00:02:05Then you should also change the brake pads and brake fluid, but that's about it.
00:02:09And if you're lucky enough to be able to spend some more, upgrading the CPU, exhaust system, seats, steering, and shift knob may be a good idea.
00:02:18And as you improve, maybe changing LSDs might be good in the future.
00:02:23Anyway, what I want you all to understand is that you don't need loads of money to enjoy the sport of drifting.
00:02:28Let's check out the six basic techniques that Tsuchiya actually applies to drift.
00:02:36See how Tsuchiya triggers the tail to slide with each move.
00:02:40To make it easier to analyze each drifting procedure at low speeds, we'll use the second hairpin at a bisu circuit going counterclockwise.
00:02:49To begin with, I'll show you what I was doing back in the days long before anyone recognized me.
00:02:55This should be the entry-level technique for all novice drifters.
00:02:59First of all, I cut the spring shorter on my car.
00:03:03And then you go out and turn your car sideways.
00:03:06There's no difficult weight transition involved here.
00:03:10We'll first use the E-brake to go sideways.
00:03:13Then we'll try what's called the shift lock, and then on to the power drift.
00:03:18That doesn't require much skill.
00:03:20I'll show you these three techniques.
00:03:25This one's for all beginners.
00:03:29Everyone goes through this stage.
00:03:31I started off doing this too.
00:03:34This drifting relies all on the E-brake.
00:03:39Straight away, brake, toe, and E-brake.
00:03:44Right there.
00:03:46Just like this.
00:03:47Well, it all starts from something like this.
00:03:50Don't worry about how you exit the corner.
00:03:51Just try to pull the E-brake at the corner entrance and concentrate on making the car go sideways.
00:03:57You brake, and then turn the wheel.
00:03:59Step on the clutch, and pull the E-brake.
00:04:01Release the E-brake.
00:04:03Go into counter-steer mode.
00:04:04Then wait.
00:04:05Wait until you know that the car is facing the corner exit direction.
00:04:09Then you gently start stepping on the gas.
00:04:12How hard you should step on the gas pedal should depend on how much you're sliding and counter-steering.
00:04:17All of this should get you to exit the corner in one piece.
00:04:20One must learn the timing and the rhythm of the Drift King's drifting procedure
00:04:26and actually feel the exact moment the tail slides
00:04:29in order to master the six basic drifting techniques.
00:04:33The length of the tail slide depends on the steering angle
00:04:35plus how long and how strong the E-brake is being pulled.
00:04:39All maneuvers must be done smoothly and timely,
00:04:42and to do that, having the right driving position becomes crucial.
00:04:45This is a must in order to give a car a quick counter-steer
00:04:48and respond to the car's slightest movement.
00:04:50Let's check out how Su-Chi is controlling the gas pedal from the outside.
00:04:56You can see he's controlling the drift without opening the gas all the way.
00:04:59The timing to pull the E-brake is almost synchronized with when the brakes are let off.
00:05:18The second technique is the shift lock.
00:05:20Notice that Su-Chi is right foot is not doing the heel and toe move.
00:05:30Okay, let's now look at the shift lock.
00:05:33I used to do this on snow and wet surfaces.
00:05:35I don't recommend to do this on dry roads, but here we go.
00:05:39Just like that.
00:05:46Kick the gas all the way in third gear.
00:05:50Brake, steer, then boom.
00:05:53You let the clutch go without using heel and toe.
00:05:56The rear will suddenly lock.
00:05:57Then you slide, counter-steer from here.
00:06:00Rest is the same as a side brake drift.
00:06:03The corner entry procedure is the same as the side brake drift.
00:06:08The important point here is when to release the clutch.
00:06:11Su-Chi lets off the clutch just as he eases off the brake and steers in.
00:06:16His braking only lasts for two seconds.
00:06:19It's like brake, brake, gas.
00:06:21The tail slide occurs right as he steers into the corner.
00:06:25This is how the car starts drifting from the corner entrance.
00:06:34In power over drifts, throttle control is the key.
00:06:37I used to do this when I couldn't drift yet.
00:06:47I'd brake like this and try to drift, but I couldn't because I was too scared.
00:06:51So the only thing I could do was to step on the gas all the way at the corner exit.
00:06:57I used to practice this on the snow as well.
00:07:02When you can't do anything about the strong understeer at the corner entry,
00:07:05you should try this on snow or on a wet surface to practice.
00:07:09Steer into the corner even if you feel the understeer.
00:07:12And at the corner exit, just floor the gas and make your car go sideways.
00:07:16And as you exit, countersteer.
00:07:18This should be the easiest way to drift at the entry level
00:07:20rather than side brake drifting and shift lock drifting.
00:07:23You should practice this on a slippery surface.
00:07:26And remember not to step on the gas until you've reached the corner exit point.
00:07:30Because if you give too much gas before this clipping point,
00:07:34you'll end up understeering.
00:07:37In this case, the corner entry is the same as before,
00:07:40gradually opening up the gas until the clipping point.
00:07:43Then Tsuchiya loosens up the gas for a moment
00:07:45and then he kicks in the gas pedal to get the tail sliding.
00:07:51Power over drifting needs strong front tire grip.
00:07:54This is the reason why Tsuchiya loosens the gas
00:07:56to make the weight shift to the front.
00:07:58By this time, you've mastered the entry level drifting.
00:08:05And if you're in control of the car's weight transition,
00:08:09you can pull your e-brake lightly.
00:08:11Just a tad so that people watching
00:08:13can't even tell you're pulling the e-brake.
00:08:16Then you'll learn how to drift using shift lock and braking.
00:08:19But this entry level is a good starting point for all beginners.
00:08:22How is the weight transition being done?
00:08:26Let's check out the braking drift.
00:08:32The three important things here are
00:08:34when to steer in,
00:08:36when to shift down,
00:08:38and how long you keep braking.
00:08:40These are the three most important factors.
00:08:45Okay, I'm in third gear.
00:08:47I'm stepping on it.
00:08:48I'm speeding.
00:08:49Then brake.
00:08:51How much you brake is crucial.
00:08:55If you kill the speed too much,
00:08:56you'll end up stopping before you drift like this,
00:08:59and with understeer.
00:09:00So you'll need a fair amount of speed
00:09:02even when you begin braking.
00:09:04Slow down to about 70% on the straightaway,
00:09:07then let go.
00:09:09Let go of the brake
00:09:10and steer into the corner.
00:09:12Here, you're a little over-speeding.
00:09:14If you brake through the corner,
00:09:16you'll end up with understeer.
00:09:17So, first brake and then turn,
00:09:19heel and toe,
00:09:20and steer in towards the clipping point.
00:09:22You'll be over-speeding here as well.
00:09:24Then you shift down to second gear
00:09:26while leaving your foot on the brake.
00:09:31Let's say you're running around 5,500 revs
00:09:34when you shift down to second gear.
00:09:36Release the clutch like you're running around 5,400 revs,
00:09:39but don't let the gears lock.
00:09:42It's similar to shift-lock drifting,
00:09:44but you don't lock the rear tires with braking drift.
00:09:49Anyhow, that's how I do it.
00:09:51Sometimes I drift by only braking,
00:09:54like through corners where I can enter and exit in second gear.
00:09:57I step on the brakes,
00:09:59leave the brakes on,
00:10:01then turn,
00:10:01and I brake once again towards the clipping point.
00:10:04Then the car starts to slide.
00:10:06With this kind of drifting,
00:10:08I concentrate on the front and rear brake balance.
00:10:14If only the front brakes work and the rear don't,
00:10:16it's impossible to brake drift.
00:10:18You can't control the shifting weight of the car
00:10:20if only the front brakes work.
00:10:21Obviously, braking is the key here.
00:10:25Tsuchiya is not braking hard at all.
00:10:27He's stepping on the brake with a certain rhythm
00:10:29to adjust the speed.
00:10:30If you coordinate the steering work to the braking,
00:10:33you're a step closer to Tsuchiya's braking drift.
00:10:41Remember the rhythm of your right foot
00:10:43should be brake, brake, brake, brake, gas.
00:10:46Steering into the corner and shifting down
00:10:53should be done simultaneously.
00:11:00Next up is the fake drift,
00:11:03where you create large weight transition by force.
00:11:09When weight transition is difficult to make just by braking,
00:11:12you shift the weight with a faint movement.
00:11:14quickly steer like this.
00:11:24And at this point, my foot is off the gas.
00:11:27And when I juke the car like this,
00:11:29the car bounces back with the weight.
00:11:31And that's when I step on the gas pedal.
00:11:34It's just like a pendulum.
00:11:36And you use that return force to make the weight transition.
00:11:40Here too, I've stepped on the gas
00:11:42all the way for a second
00:11:43before I let go
00:11:45in order to get the car to slide.
00:11:48Once the car is in sliding mode,
00:11:51release the foot from the gas
00:11:52and control.
00:11:54I used to do this a lot on snow.
00:11:59If you're going too slow,
00:12:00you have to step on the gas to make it happen.
00:12:02But if you're going fast enough
00:12:04and you steer to the left
00:12:05and quickly steer back to the right,
00:12:07your tail will automatically start to slide.
00:12:10But you know,
00:12:11I wasn't that good back then,
00:12:13so my car would lose speed
00:12:15while I was doing all that.
00:12:17That's when I learned to give the car some gas
00:12:19to make the car slide
00:12:20so that I can drift even at such speeds.
00:12:24Because of the inertial force from the faint action,
00:12:27the braking doesn't have to be as strong
00:12:29as the braking drift.
00:12:30It's all physics and dynamics,
00:12:32but the rhythm of the right foot
00:12:34is always the same.
00:12:35Okay, shall we try this dynamic drifting?
00:13:00This one's pretty difficult,
00:13:02so even professional racing drivers like us
00:13:05can't always get it right.
00:13:07Drifting begins from stepping off the gas,
00:13:09just like the Fuji Speedway's 100R
00:13:11or the final corner at Suga.
00:13:26Unbelievable.
00:13:27That was awesome.
00:13:29It's so tempting to brake.
00:13:31Here in Ebisu,
00:13:33this 100R corner is a third gear corner.
00:13:36You step on the gas all the way in third gear.
00:13:40And the difficult part is where you release your foot
00:13:42from the gas pedal for a second.
00:13:45If you're coming in with enough speed in third gear,
00:13:47steer into the corner,
00:13:48and the moment you release the gas,
00:13:50you start to slide.
00:13:51On this particular track,
00:13:52you need to get ready for the final corner
00:13:54at this point and slow down.
00:13:55But for now,
00:13:57we'll ignore that to show you guys this dynamic drifting.
00:14:00So when you release the gas,
00:14:02your tail will slide.
00:14:03Then you just counter-steer and control.
00:14:05I use this a lot at the Fuji Speedway's 100R corner.
00:14:12I charge in without braking
00:14:14and just instantly let go of the gas.
00:14:16And when the tail starts to drift,
00:14:17I just counter-steer and slam on the gas
00:14:19as I exit the corner.
00:14:21You do this at the final corner at Suga.
00:14:23There are some cars that can plunge into the corner
00:14:25without braking at all.
00:14:26In a Miata,
00:14:27you can dynamic drift at Mazzei,
00:14:29go right in at full speed,
00:14:30and by releasing the throttle,
00:14:32you can initiate the tail slide.
00:14:33From there,
00:14:34it's just counter-steering
00:14:35and stepping on the gas again at the exit.
00:14:37And that's what I call dynamic drifting.
00:14:40This is an example of not how he stepped off the gas,
00:14:42but how Tsuchiya was able to avoid crashing.
00:14:45His lightning-quick steering work
00:14:47is simply unbelievable.
00:14:56So that was dynamic drifting,
00:14:58which is the ultimate form of all drifting.
00:15:01That wraps up the six basic techniques of drifting.
00:15:03I won't recommend the dynamic drifting
00:15:05at the early stages of learning how to drift,
00:15:07since it can be dangerous.
00:15:10With the mastering of all these six basic techniques,
00:15:12you too will be able to drift like a pro.
00:15:14The first thing you have to do
00:15:16if you want to take up drifting
00:15:17is not to be afraid.
00:15:19Try to have fun.
00:15:20Don't think too much about weight transition,
00:15:22dynamic drifting,
00:15:23your suspension setup.
00:15:24Visit a track,
00:15:25go out there
00:15:26and start pulling the e-brake.
00:15:27That's the best way to learn how to drift.
00:15:30After you get the hang of it,
00:15:31try to use all six techniques
00:15:33in various corners.
00:15:34Take your car to as many tracks as possible
00:15:36and try different styles of drift.
00:15:38And again,
00:15:39be safe
00:15:39and have fun.
00:15:43The art of Tsuchiya's drifting
00:15:44is that no matter which track it is
00:15:46or what car he's driving,
00:15:48he can drift beautifully.
00:15:50Why is this possible?
00:15:51Let's see why Tsuchiya
00:15:52is called the Drift King
00:15:54at Mazzei Circus.
00:15:55We're at Mazzei Circus
00:16:03in Niigata Prefecture.
00:16:05I hope you understood
00:16:06the basic techniques
00:16:07that I showed you at Ebisu.
00:16:08Here at Mazzei,
00:16:09we're going to be applying
00:16:10those basic techniques
00:16:11to high-level drifting.
00:16:13As you can see
00:16:14from the track layout,
00:16:15Mazzei Circus
00:16:15is composed of many types of corners,
00:16:17from low to mid-speed corners
00:16:19to high-speed corners,
00:16:20where I can show you
00:16:21the e-brake drifting,
00:16:22power over-drifting,
00:16:23and dynamic drifting.
00:16:25Well,
00:16:26the dynamic is too dangerous here,
00:16:28so we'll try a combination
00:16:29of the brake drifting
00:16:30and dynamic.
00:16:31And we'll show you
00:16:32how to do this
00:16:32with various types of cars,
00:16:34actual cars that you might own.
00:16:36I'll show you
00:16:37how to drift with cars
00:16:38that won't turn well,
00:16:39or have strong oversteer,
00:16:41or even cars
00:16:41with very little power.
00:16:43Here is a demo run
00:16:45by Suchia
00:16:45in a nicely tuned
00:16:47S-14 Sovia.
00:16:50I have to warm up
00:16:52my tires first.
00:16:54This slightly wet condition
00:16:55can make the car
00:16:56oversteer,
00:16:57or understeer,
00:16:58in certain corners.
00:17:00So,
00:17:00let's warm up the tires
00:17:02and the brakes first.
00:17:08How will Suchia control
00:17:09his S-14 on this surface?
00:17:11The G-ball will indicate
00:17:13the weight transition
00:17:14at each corner.
00:17:21It's wet here,
00:17:23so I'll just pull the e-brake
00:17:25to avoid the understeer.
00:17:28For the first couple of laps,
00:17:30I'll demonstrate
00:17:30the braking drift
00:17:31with this K-Office S-14.
00:17:34This S-14 is modified
00:17:36with a great suspension system
00:17:37that allows the car
00:17:39to perform high-speed drifting.
00:17:40I should be able to clear
00:17:42all corners
00:17:43with the braking drift.
00:17:44C'est parti.
00:18:14No matter which track you're at, or which corner you're going through, what you have to do is basically the same.
00:18:25It doesn't matter if you're in Ebesu or Maze. It's the same thing.
00:18:34Breaking drift is controlled by the breaking power, your breaking touch.
00:18:40Oh, it's wet here, so I should take it easy.
00:18:44According to the length of each corner, you need to adjust the force of your breaking.
00:18:57I went into that core too fast.
00:18:59It's all wet here.
00:19:06It's absolutely wet.
00:19:07See? I'm doing the same thing.
00:19:22See? I'm doing the same thing.
00:19:34No matter where I go, this is how I do it.
00:19:37But remember, you have to adjust your speed, braking power, and steering angle for each corner.
00:19:46What do you do when it's all wet like this?
00:19:53Just pull the old E-brake.
00:20:00In corners where understeer is strong, just pull the E-brake.
00:20:04It's best not to use it too much, but you can do it when you're still learning.
00:20:12Oops. That was understeering right there.
00:20:16Here again.
00:20:16My drifting is a bit wild, isn't it?
00:20:35Oh.
00:20:36Oh.
00:20:36Oh.
00:20:37Oh.
00:20:37Oh.
00:20:38Oh.
00:20:39Oh.
00:20:39Oh.
00:20:39Oh.
00:20:40Oh.
00:20:41Oh.
00:20:42Oh.
00:20:43Oh.
00:20:44Oh.
00:20:45Oh.
00:20:46Oh.
00:20:46Oh.
00:20:46That corner entry began as a braking drift, but towards the exit, I switched to dynamic drifting.
00:20:56Here, I'm power drifting at the exit.
00:21:14Here, I'm power drifting at the exit.
00:21:16Let's do it.
00:21:18Let's go.
00:21:19There, I'm power drifting.
00:21:21You can't go.
00:21:29Oh.
00:21:29C'est un peu comme la dynamique, parce que j'ai touché les brakes juste un peu.
00:21:54C'est une combinaison de la dynamique et la dynamique.
00:21:56C'est un peu comme la dynamique.
00:22:26On the S-curves, the fink drift should be used.

00:23:31C'est un peu comme ça.
00:23:33Voilà, c'est un peu comme ça.
00:23:38Let's check out how the S14 is acting on this final corner from the outside camera.
00:23:47This well-balanced S14 Sylvia goes into braking drift by a light touch of braking and smooth steering work.
00:24:00This time, let's check the onboard footage from another lap.
00:24:03Look at the braking. Just like at Ebisu Circuit, Tsuchiya is getting the tail to slide by pumping lightly on the brake.
00:24:19As Tsuchiya countersteers, the G-balls are intact and moving towards the rear very smoothly.
00:24:25A beautiful drift must have smooth weight transition.
00:24:28Pay attention to the angle of his countersteering and throttle control.

00:24:55OK, like I said, there are cars that don't turn well, resulting in strong understeering.
00:26:52S13's front grip is terrible.
00:26:54Yes, like your car, probably.
00:26:56If you install one of K-Office's suspensions, it will go away,
00:26:59but I'm not here to advertise my product, so let's move on.
00:27:02Okay, you start.
00:27:04This is the first corner.
00:27:06You're climbing up to around here, and understeer is strong going uphill.
00:27:10With the S14, I could easily turn into the corner with a little steering work,
00:27:14and by riding the brakes a little.
00:27:16The S13 and Hachiroku won't turn enough because it needs more front-end weight,
00:27:21so what do I do?
00:27:23I give it stronger braking in order to create stronger weight shift to the front.
00:27:27Actually, the braking I do here is the equivalent to how long and strong I brake with the e-brake.
00:27:37Remember, always to shift more weight towards the front end.
00:27:41So here you're going uphill, and when you reach the top, you start braking.
00:27:46And as you turn into the corner, ride the brakes longer compared to what you would do on an S14.
00:27:53Then the rear end will start to slide.
00:27:55From here, you just smile and step on the gas to power drift right out from the corner.
00:28:00Next up is a champion of oversteering, the MR2.
00:28:04I mean, these types of cars won't stop once it starts going around.
00:28:07Just like the NSX, these mid-engine layout cars have light front ends and heavier rears,
00:28:12which makes them spin happy.
00:28:14Oof, that was close.
00:28:17When I ride the brakes like I did with the S14, this happens.
00:28:23Adjusting the pressure you brake with and how long you brake entering the corner is the key here.
00:28:30The difference between the S14 and the MR2 is the braking power you apply.
00:28:41The braking time I ride into the corner is only about half of what I did with the S14.
00:28:51Right here, I quit braking already.
00:29:08And the braking pressure itself will be weaker compared to the S14.
00:29:12Of course, the method to decrease speed is exactly the same.
00:29:16But here, you leave the brakes on.
00:29:19That's the difference.
00:29:24Here, you begin your countersteer a bit earlier.
00:29:42That's how you keep control and drift with understeer.
00:29:49Oops, I thought I had that one.
00:30:04But hey, even monkeys fall from trees.
00:30:07The car had too much speed on that one.
00:30:14So, the important thing here is to keep the weight transition small.
00:30:18Delicate weight shifting is the key here.
00:30:25Like here, I go in like this.
00:30:28But I'll let go of my brakes early.
00:30:32You can tell by looking at the G-Ball that the weight transition is smoother compared to the S14.
00:30:36This is how you drift with cars that have strong oversteer.
00:30:41The countersteer, as soon as the tail slides, earlier countersteer is important.
00:30:46And the speed, you have to start countersteering at high speeds like this.
00:30:51That's how you drift with oversteer cars like the MR2.
00:30:54The difference between the cars I've shown today is like this.
00:30:56The S13, the car with strong understeer, needs big weight shifting.
00:31:03The S14, which has neutral steer, only needs braking drift technique to go into the corners smoothly.
00:31:08Whereas strong oversteer cars, like the MR2,
00:31:10the S13, the car with strong understeer, needs big weight shifting.
00:31:12The S14, which has neutral steer, only needs braking drift technique to go into the corners smoothly.
00:31:16Whereas strong oversteer cars, like the MR2, need stability as you brake into the corner.
00:31:21You're carrying a heavy load of weight in the rear that makes the car unstable and wobbly when you're going in.
00:31:28So, stabilize the rear weight and go into the corner, adjusting the amount of your braking according to the steering angle.
00:31:35The amount of weight transition is about half of what you need to go into the corners smoothly.
00:31:38Whereas strong oversteer cars, like the MR2, need stability as you brake into the corner.
00:31:43You're carrying a heavy load of weight in the rear that makes the car unstable and wobbly when you're going in.
00:31:48So, stabilize the rear weight and go into the corner, adjusting the amount of your braking according to the steering angle.
00:31:57is about half of what you have with an S14.
00:32:01And with only half the pressure on the brakes, these cars can turn in at the same angle as the S14.
00:32:10The S14's countersteer is sharp compared to that of the MR2.
00:32:14So, what must be done on the MR2 is the exact opposite.
00:32:18When you steer in, let off the brakes early.
00:32:21The tail end will react and start to slide.
00:32:24Then you counter-steer.
00:32:26On the S14, I counter-steer at this rate.
00:32:29But on the MR2, I steer like this and wham.
00:32:32That's the kind of difference in steering speed.
00:32:38The important thing here is the speed of your counter-steer.
00:32:41Not just here on the first hairpin, but here on the S-curve.
00:32:45And right here as well.
00:32:47When going downhill, the weight becomes larger, so the rear becomes easier to get thrown out.
00:32:53So, it's better to turn small here on the first one, so that you can drift on the second corner.
00:33:00The same here.
00:33:01You don't want any understeer or get thrown towards the outside on the first one, as these cars with strong oversteer won't be able to recover by the second corner that's coming right up.
00:33:12So, just turn small on the first one.
00:33:15And on the second one, just lightly step on the brakes, or let go of the gas to get the momentum change.
00:33:20Then you can control with a quick counter-steer.
00:33:26Compared to FR cars, these mid-engine cars have good traction.
00:33:30Therefore, the driver has to act quickly and perform the next move earlier.
00:33:37You can wait for the tail slide to ease down a bit before you hit the gas on FR cars.
00:33:42But on these mid-engine cars, you don't wait.
00:33:46But you hit the gas while the car is still sliding.
00:33:51You have to get the car to power slide immediately.
00:33:55And without stopping the tail slide you're in during the midsection of the corner.
00:34:01Everything has to be done earlier on mid-engine cars compared to FR machines.
00:34:06Mid-engine cars, like the MR2, have heavier loads towards the rear compared to FR cars.
00:34:12So mid-engine cars tend to have a stronger grip with the rear tires.
00:34:16Hitting the gas early makes the rear tires lose traction, which enables the car to slide and drift.
00:34:31The big difference between the S13 and the S14 is that the action needed to trigger the tail slide is smaller.
00:34:39You don't need big braking maneuvers or steering work to slide the tail and drift.
00:34:43Further, by checking the different laps, you can see Tsuchiya stepping on the brakes with more pressure, but the tail doesn't slide.
00:35:01So he gives it gas, but even that doesn't make the car slide.
00:35:05The last thing he did was letting off the gas to get the car to go sideways.
00:35:10This proves how Tsuchiya can instantly change his applied techniques according to the situation he is facing.
00:35:15Okay, now, how do you drift with a car that doesn't have much power?
00:35:29What I'll be explaining to you here is from way back when I used to drive the Hachiroku every day and night.
00:35:35That's like 15 years ago.
00:35:38With this car, it's all about flooring the gas pedal all the way from the entrance to the exit.
00:35:42This car has been nicely lowered as well. Mine used to look like this.
00:35:47You have to step on it to make this thing go sideways.
00:35:51With these underpowered cars, you just have to keep the gas on to get it into power drift mode.
00:36:01I just killed the power.
00:36:04But it's great that I can constantly floor this thing.
00:36:12This is great.
00:36:19I'm flooring it.
00:36:22I think it's so cool.
00:36:25I wish Toyota could make cars like this again.
00:36:28Shift down and put the pedal to the metal.
00:36:46It feels great. Just the right amount of power to have fun.
00:36:51This kind of power is just right for these M7 tires.
00:37:01Feels good.
00:37:07Now, this is fun.
00:37:09This is fun.
00:37:25I'm literally flooring it the entire way.
00:37:28Do you know any other car that can do this?
00:37:30It's just great.
00:37:39What I'm doing is simply turning the car with the gas pedal.
00:37:46It's just great.
00:37:47What I'm doing is simply turning the car with the gas pedal.
00:37:50Step on the gas to make it turn, brake, and shift down, then step on the gas again.
00:38:05Step on it to let the rear go.
00:38:08You have to keep revving it within the torque band.
00:38:11Oops, I dropped it. Whoops.
00:38:22The instant you fall out of the torque band, you stop drifting.
00:38:26So make sure you rev it up enough to keep it up there.
00:38:41This is what I mean.
00:38:54So, how was drifting with an underpowered Hachiroku?
00:38:58This car is a classic, and it will be a classic for years to come.
00:39:02Did you know I taught Takumi from Initial D how to drift in one of these?
00:39:06Okay, the first hairpin, what am I doing?
00:39:08I'm simply turning the car only with the gas pedal.
00:39:12This is the biggest difference from other cars.
00:39:16This is quite a technique, definitely for advanced drifters.
00:39:20You need to use this here on the first hairpin, and here, and here on the S-turn.
00:39:27And here.
00:39:29I use a combination of the braking drift and dynamic drift.
00:39:32It's the same here as well, but on the final corner, these old cars have tendencies to understeer.
00:39:37So, what do you do?
00:39:39You step on the gas and turn the car sideways.
00:39:44Let's check the steering work for the first corner.
00:39:47You come down the straightaway in third gear.
00:39:50So, shift down to second.
00:39:52Steer into the corner.
00:39:54But the car is understeering.
00:39:56Step on the gas all the way and let the rear slide.
00:39:57Then, you let go of the gas and wait.
00:40:01But if you wait too long, you'll lose too much rev, and your drift power will stall.
00:40:06So, after you give it gas all the way to make the tail slide, countersteer.
00:40:10And as you do this, place your foot on the gas, just to keep the rev within the torque pan.
00:40:15This is how you drift right from the corner entrance to the exit.
00:40:21And this is also the reason why an underpowered classic like the Hachiroku can go up against the high-tech power machines of today.
00:40:28I'm turning using the gas pedal at all corners.
00:40:30You know, you may be able to drift in other cars, but drifting through the corners from entrance to exit in an underpowered car is a tough task to pull off.
00:40:41And that's why people who say they can drift in a Skyline, Supra, MR2, or a Silvio can't always go sideways in Hachiroku.
00:40:50This is because you really need to know your stuff to keep the underpowered car drifting through corners.
00:40:54And to get this done, you must master the six basic techniques to make your drift perfect.
00:41:00Let's check the Hachiroku on the final corner.
00:41:04In this corner, a standard braking and shift lock triggers the car to drift.
00:41:09But the throttle control from here is different.
00:41:12Tsuchiya floors it immediately to keep the car sliding all the way from the entrance to the corner exit.
00:41:17He's purposely letting the wheel spin a bit so he can control the tail slide with little power.
00:41:26He's driving while constantly maintaining loose traction.
00:41:30These six techniques and their various application make the Drift King go sideways.
00:41:36How did I become the Drift King?
00:41:41I can only say that I was driving day and night.
00:41:46I guess people call it practicing and hard work.
00:41:49But to me, I was just having fun out there.
00:41:52To enjoy driving, or shall we say, practice for now, all you need is some safe clear space.
00:42:00This will be enough.
00:42:02Let's start with a 180 degree turn.
00:42:04The first thing I tried, right after I got my driver's license, is this.
00:42:07Pull the E-brake, and try to end up facing the direction I came from.
00:42:16In my days, it was cool to be able to do this and get it right.
00:42:28You know, you guys have these cones or pylons now.
00:42:31But in my days, we didn't have anything like that.
00:42:35Nor were we smart enough to think of using one.
00:42:38If I had these cones back then, I would have improved much faster.
00:42:44Obviously, in the beginning, I couldn't get it right like this.
00:42:49It used to be like this.
00:42:51I was scared and didn't know how fast I should be going, so I would stop like this.
00:42:55But turning the car in the direction that you came from, without stopping the engine, means that the driver is stepping on the clutch to turn the car around.
00:43:04In the beginning, it's okay to mess up and stop facing the wrong direction, or even stall the engine.
00:43:13But don't get scared. Just try it in a safe, closed environment.
00:43:20And, once you learn how to turn 180 degrees with an E-brake, your next step should be making 90 degree turns.
00:43:28I never did this on the streets.
00:43:31The important thing is to keep trying, and of course, practice in a safe place.
00:43:35Turning 90 degrees is a cool trick. Let's say this is a right angle corner, and you go like this.
00:43:44This 90 degree turn is easy once you get the hang of pulling the E-brake, adjusting your speed, and counter-steering to face the right direction.
00:43:55Once you master these two techniques, you'll want to install an LSD.
00:43:59You'll be able to turn 180 degrees and move on to doing 360s without stalling the engine.
00:44:06But remember, this is after you've completed the 90 and 180 degree turns.
00:44:14Believe me, you will be able to do this only if you know the basic techniques of sliding the car from a simple tail slide to a power slide, adjusting the drifting with your gas pedal.
00:44:24The LSD really comes after you master the basic techniques.
00:44:33The important thing here is to discover how much fun it is to play with your car.
00:44:37Like here, I can turn just by pulling the E-brake.
00:44:40When you learn to do this correctly, you'll want to do it on the track.
00:44:45The main objective of this special turning program is that you have fun driving your car.
00:44:48If you have fun, you'll be calm enough to sense the behavior of your car, and at the same time, you won't be scared of your tail sliding anymore.
00:44:56Tsuchiya says that if you go through these training programs, you'll be able to drift on track for sure.
00:45:05Watching this DVD should enable you to look over the weak points of your driving.
00:45:09And from there, try out the various drifting techniques that Tsuchiya has illustrated.
00:45:14The lesson continues.
00:45:15Special training program number four is learning how to use the handbrake according to the radius of the corner.
00:45:37Okay, first of all, okay, here. How about this?
00:45:48See, I counter steered and stopped the car facing the direction I want to exit.
00:45:55You have to counter steer toward the exit direction.
00:45:58You can see here that I am actually counter steering.
00:46:01And it's okay to pull the E-brake and stop here.
00:46:04Beginners tend to end up facing the wrong direction.
00:46:07Like this.
00:46:08So, controlling the car towards the direction that you want to go is crucial here.
00:46:13You can do this by adjusting how long you actually pull the E-brake.
00:46:18I was supposed to go that way, but I was pulling the E-brake too long.
00:46:24But let's face it, you'll mess up at the beginning, so learn from your mistakes,
00:46:28and don't smash up your car and pay for repairs all the time like I did.
00:46:32You guys have places like this, Driftland.
00:46:33I think it's important to practice without worrying about your repair fees or putting someone else in danger.
00:46:46See, here. I'm pulling the E-brake too long, letting the car slide too much.
00:46:51In this situation, your left hand is pulling the E-brake and your right hand working the counter steer is too slow.
00:46:57This is how you'll end up facing the direction that you came from.
00:47:02So, just shorten the time you're pulling the E-brake.
00:47:06This is what happens when you steer too much.
00:47:22This was a good example. As you just saw, I began counter steering too late and then I recovered the counter steer too late.
00:47:28As a result, my car just lost control. If all my steering work was done earlier, I could have avoided this.
00:47:38If you end up doing this, just hit the brakes and stop the car. Take a deep breath and calm down.
00:47:49You won't get anywhere trying to recover from this state, so just stop the car and chill, okay?
00:47:56And start from zero all over again.
00:48:00Okay, let's review the training program.
00:48:05I admit that this training needs effort, but you want to have fun too. So find a safe place to practice and start from the 180 degree turn.
00:48:15Then try the 360, but you need an LSD to do this. Then the 90 degree turn.
00:48:20And when you learn all this, come to a track like this one to practice, where you can find something like this.
00:48:25To practice doing donuts, you need an LSD. Come to a track like this to practice pulling the E-brake along the actual radius of the corner.
00:48:32If it's a 90 degree corner, just pull the E-brake for a second, counter steer, and then hit the gas.
00:48:38For 180, which actually is a U-turn, you need to keep pulling for at least one second to let the tail slide.
00:48:44So practice and learn to get the feeling of what kind of speed, angle, and steering work is needed for various turns.
00:48:50I said practice, but you'll have so much fun, you won't feel like you're practicing at all.
00:48:55You'll have a lot of fun, I can guarantee that.
00:48:57Until you can do all of this with your eyes closed, you'll be spending a lot of your pocket money on tires.
00:49:02You know, if you can't afford new tires, just get some nice ones for the front, and go to a scrap yard for the rear tires.
00:49:08Used tires from a scrap yard can be put to good use on a drift machine.
00:49:12After you practice with used tires, and become better at drifting, well, let's say you can counter steer, and kick the gas in towards the corner exit, and drift properly once every three times.
00:49:24You're now ready to get some good tires on all four wheels.
00:49:28At this point, you should be wearing the same tires in the front and the back.
00:49:32With new tires, you're dealing with real grip.
00:49:36And here, maintenance is very important.
00:49:38If you are like me, and you love cars, you have to take good care of them, right?
00:49:48If you practice like this, with your e-brake all the way up here, if you leave it, you're out.
00:49:55Your e-brake should at least be like this.
00:49:57Sometimes there are guys going like this.
00:50:00I mean, you're not driving a train, for crying out loud.
00:50:03So please, use some sense to maintain your car.
00:50:10I used to adjust my e-brakes once a month.
00:50:13Back then, the e-brake was all I had.
00:50:15At one time, I couldn't turn without it.
00:50:17I'm serious.
00:50:21And brake balance is also important.
00:50:23Racing cars have brake balance adjusters, but production cars don't.
00:50:28So we have to adjust brakes by changing the brake pads.
00:50:32Beginners tend to think that just changing the front pads can make some difference.
00:50:36But what a big mistake.
00:50:38It will make some changes, but it just messes up your balance.
00:50:42For instance, my front pads are Image C2.
00:50:46But if the rear pads were stock, only the front pads will work and mess up the balance.
00:50:50But again, there are preferences according to the driver.
00:50:54So another important thing is, don't just imitate the pros and simply install pads.
00:51:00You need to find the ones that suit your driving style.
00:51:03I like the linear feeling, but you might prefer ones that need hard braking to get it working.
00:51:08Like the Super Sports brake pads.
00:51:11So choose the right pads depending on your style and the front tire grip.
00:51:16Doing nothing to the rear won't get you anywhere.
00:51:18I assure you, you'll have a hard time in corners.
00:51:22Say you're in a braking drift and beginners often pull the e-brake, right?
00:51:27In that case, you need a decent pair of rear brake pads to get the rear tires to lock by pulling the e-brake.
00:51:35Plus, if you're wearing poor grip tires on the rear, it's easier to lock them with decent rear pads.
00:51:40When you become an intermediate drifter, you can now step on the gas when you're tail sliding, right?
00:51:49If you drift for five days a week like I used to, you need to overhaul your LSD once every month or so.
00:51:55This means if you go drifting once a week, you'd need an LSD overhaul at least once every eight months or so.
00:52:06An LSD that needs an overhaul feels like a viscous LSD, and it's not fun at all.
00:52:11The car won't exit properly and sometimes kills the drifting.
00:52:16You only end up with worn-out rear tires because the inner wheels keep spinning.
00:52:21It just ruins the fun of drifting.
00:52:23So make sure to overhaul your LSD and maintain your drift machine in healthy condition.
00:52:28You will have more fun on a well-maintained drift machine.
00:52:31The Drift King. Suchia says, I still want to get better.
00:52:56This is Suchia's flat-out drift attack at Ebisu Circuit.
00:52:59This is the next step we can find in a way to get.
00:53:00This is the next step we can get.
00:53:01This is the next step we can find
00:53:06in yards around here, so this is where we have.
00:53:07This is the next step we can get.
00:53:10Let's go down the road to the car and get better than the car.
00:53:13This way we can get better than I am.
00:53:14The car is probably the other upmost turning though for a bush.
00:53:17The road from the car is the other on a well-maintain drift.
00:53:19This way we can get better than the car to the car when we go out.
00:53:22It looks like a similar shift here.
00:53:24And now I am going to get there.
00:53:26C'est parti.
00:53:56C'est parti.
00:54:26The high-speed drift.
00:54:28The six techniques are still vital for this style of drifting, but now you're going fast.
00:54:34When speed and drift meet, you get the ultimate driving style.
00:54:38The high-speed drift is composed from small counter steering and velocity.
00:54:56High-speed drift needs braking delayed to the absolute limit, instant steering work, and
00:55:03all-out cornering exit skills.
00:55:05Every movement needs to be orchestrated precisely.
00:55:08Focus on the steering work as well.
00:55:19In high-speed drifts, tail sliding is controlled and limited, so counter steering work can be
00:55:23minimized.
00:55:25Wheel spins are limited also, making the car easier to grip and accelerate at the corner exit.
00:55:29Let's compare the high-speed drift and the show drift laps at Ebisu.
00:55:41Show drifts keeps drifting from the entrance to the exit.
00:55:44With a high-speed drifting, traction recovery is very quick, even during the counter steering
00:56:01work.
00:56:02The steering angle is kept at a minimum as well.
00:56:24This is the ultimate style of drifting, high-speed drifting.
00:56:51So, how did you like the BMI Special Edition Drift Bible?
00:56:58I hope I was able to show you the profound world of drifting.
00:57:02It's a driving technique and also a sport in its own category.
00:57:05When I first started drifting, I was having a ball just going sideways, but some people
00:57:10used to criticize my driving style, say that it wasn't real drifting, because I was using
00:57:15the e-brake and shift locks.
00:57:16But I didn't care, and I just kept at it, and at the same time, having a great time.
00:57:21As I've been saying all through this DVD, the six basic techniques are what make my drifting
00:57:26style possible.
00:57:28After mastering all six techniques, I found the dynamic drifting.
00:57:32To be specific, it's a combination of the braking drift and dynamic drift.
00:57:36This style naturally became my own drifting style.
00:57:39Anyway, don't ever give up.
00:57:41Even if your car is not turning or has strong oversteer, there's always a way to drift any
00:57:46car.
00:57:47And remember to be safe and have fun.
00:57:49Try to have as much fun as possible when you start drifting.
00:57:52And once you're able to drift, set your goals higher and keep at it.
00:58:00Aim to become the next Drift King.
00:58:02Drift King.
00:58:03Aim to become the next Drift King.
