34:10it just wasn't a great place for me to be i felt like i had to prove to grace so that no like i'm in
34:15this like you can trust me it's fine i think what we have to try to figure out here is how the trust
34:23was broken between you and grace so it's so frustrating because so much of it is about
34:29private stuff i had wanted to avoid talking about um one morning like ash really wants to be intimate
34:38i put my head in the room like like in a joking way and then she like laughed and smiled at me so i went
34:43over and i grabbed her and i put her on the bed and then we rolled around and kissed i said no not
34:49up for it he continued pursued and i said oh you're like a dog with a bone today like what's going
34:54into you and he said there's a half naked woman in front of me with a good body what do you expect
34:59she replied and said what so if it was any woman you'd feel the same i was like why would you come
35:04back with that like it's me and you in the room you're half naked and i've i've given you a compliment
35:08like why would you do that i stopped and i was like i don't understand how you can't take a compliment
35:15and to me that's basically saying like oh my animal instinct is overtaking me like you're just
35:21a piece of me or like a like you could be anyone standing in front of me ash kept saying i want to
35:26talk about this compliment i was like we don't need to talk about the compliment he was saying you ask
35:30alia you ask rebecca they'll tell you it's a compliment i was saying i don't need to ask them
35:35it was a compliment for me yeah and i'm telling you it didn't land and that's all it has to be
35:40but why didn't it land let's unpack it let's get the don't need to i remember we spoke to him about
35:46the fact that if it doesn't land well to the person you're sending the compliment to then that needs to
35:51be acknowledged do you feel that he took that feedback on board i don't think he ever took any
35:56of the feedback from the commitment ceremonies he acknowledged when i was saying it but he didn't
36:01actively do any of it himself i think what's fair to say is that communication for the two of you
36:08was just going in two different directions would you say that's kind of a fair analysis of your
36:14relationship it's like everything i was kind of doing to help the situation was making it worse
36:22i've got so many i know maybe examples aren't the right thing but one of the things that
36:26i didn't really speak up about i would go to the toilet and lock the door and ash would get something
36:34from the kitchen i guess and unlock it from the other side and i'd be like no no no like stop stop
36:41really like panicking what was the intention there was he wanting playfulness i think he wanted the kind
36:47of marriage where it's like really like familiar but we were strangers so for me maybe that would
36:54come later but hadn't yet and this was happening when i was in the shower sometimes one time he even
37:01said like i don't know why you keep locking this door i'm an engineer that happened once i personally
37:07don't even feel like the reaction in that moment was bad because if the reaction was like really bad or
37:13or shouted or did something i'd be like okay wow like i'm sorry i messed up like i'm very accountable
37:19for if i do something wrong in my mind i was doing it playfulness like like we'd we'd been intimate we'd
37:24seen each other and we're married it's not a big deal they don't do it maliciously going in there would
37:30always be playful she said that you got a utensil from the kitchen to open the door and you said i'm an
37:37engineer i can pick them i did it with my nail so you picked the lock while she was having a private
37:41moment when you say it like it sounds i completely completely understand what you're saying you're
37:45right for me it was it was a silly little just we were married and i just thought it was like a
37:53funny thing to do it you keep saying we're married yeah that is not a permission slip yes to cross
37:58boundaries yeah that's not what i'm what i'm saying it was like really just confusing i just it was it
38:05was impossible for me to navigate so some real issues there around boundaries sorry so this is how i
38:11look at a boundary rules are a two-way street boundaries are a two-way street when i'm looking
38:15at this that's an area where i see that you could have stepped up and said you know what enough is
38:20enough i've said a consequence and enough is enough yes i fully agree if i'd have been stern with ash if
38:28i'd have been like really firm he would have said you think i'm a bad person and he had this blanket
38:35statement of like you just don't see me for who i am you only see me a certain type of way it's not
38:40lost on me now but the best week ash had quite openly it was the week at the retreat where i was
38:48avoiding conflict and i just stopped asserting myself and the things he was doing that made me
38:52uncomfortable i just stopped saying and he's like that's the best week we had it's because i felt to
38:57you and to me i'm like that is so he doesn't want to be accountable and he doesn't want to point it
39:02out and he doesn't want to change my argument to grace was always how come everybody else can see
39:07me for who i am and see that like i'm working at this that i'm really trying and then the person i'm
39:13putting most time effort and energy into and you still can't like how come everyone else can see it
39:18and you can't what about just accepting listening and trying to understand her perspective i think
39:25when your partner is saying to you they don't feel heard it's really important that you do say okay
39:30i hear you i respect where you're coming from yeah you know what's so interesting to me about
39:35this is in my i think about the relationship that i have with my wife uh i think everything that you've
39:41done with grace my wife and i've done but i think the difference is that i've been married for 23 years
39:49and we have built a level of undeniable trust and i think what you did is you went into this marriage
39:58saying we should trust each other yeah just because and grace said no you have to earn my trust
40:05and you started off on a different page yeah would you agree with that 100 yeah
40:12like these things i know when you're saying it now when i'm here and i'm thinking yeah i
40:16fucked up but i've done them in the past and it's it's always been okay okay
40:20oh the challenge though is that when you cross a boundary from grace's perspective you then
40:29take on the role of a bully right it's it's always about being aware of where the boundary
40:34is in calibrating around that anything like that was that was definitely a challenge for you yeah
40:39but you saying out loud and saying that makes me feel shit makes you feel awful
40:47i summarize it i came in and married a stranger ash came in and married a wife
40:53i just want to acknowledge something here for you when we first met i really got how serious you were
40:59taking this experiment yeah and i really do believe that you were ready to start dropping your guard and
41:06opening up and we saw you do that yeah and that's where vulnerability lives and you opened that door
41:13showed some vulnerability but the way that he managed that with you is what's been disappointing yeah
41:21ash it's become clear that whilst there are many great traits that you both share there are some
41:28fundamental differences between you and grace it's absolutely fine to be different but if a partner is
41:34saying to you that they don't feel comfortable with something that you've done if your reaction is
41:38dismissive you're likely to get another reaction from them which will mean the conflict continues
41:44i think oftentimes partners just want to feel validated and i think i i completely agree with you
41:50since coming out of it and questioning so much more now where i think going into this i wasn't really
41:56passionate at all i don't think it's a bad thing i think it could be a positive absolute

45:56well was moving in together i desperately wanted to move in with you throughout this whole experience
46:01it's given me happiness to like have made our apartment home to us but like home for us feels
46:09like each other yeah don't you know what i mean that's what worries me the most about being outside
