00:00Ganja buds now fetch up to 35,000 ringgit per kilogram, compared to 3,000 ringgit for regular ganja.
00:11A syndicate, said to be new to trafficking, tried to cash in by operating between Malaysia and a neighboring country.
00:18Penang Police Chief Commissioner Datuk Azizi Ismail told a press conference on Monday
00:23that the syndicate used Malaysia as a transit point for international distribution,
00:28as there was no local market due to its high price.
00:32But luck ran out barely a month into the operation.
00:35On November 4, police arrested eight people, aged between 20 and 37, during two raids in Bukit Murtajam.
00:44247.7 kilograms of ganja buds, worth over 8.6 million ringgit, were seized.
00:50Commissioner Azizi said it was the state's biggest drug bust this year,
00:54and the total seizure can be consumed by 500,000 people.
00:59Six people, including a British citizen of Pakistani origin, were picked up from a homestay during the first raid.
01:06The second raid led to the arrest of a local man in his 30s, believed to be the mastermind, and his wife, a Thai national.
01:14Four of the suspects have prior criminal and drug records.
01:17If you look at the first aid,
01:19the group, which had been operating since mid-October,
01:22would smuggle drugs via land from the east coast from a neighbouring country.
01:27The syndicate attempted to disguise the ganja buds,
01:30with different flavouring marked on its packaging.
01:33Police believe those arrested are transporters,
01:36who were paid between 9,000 and 15,000 ringgit per trip
01:39to move the drugs across state borders.
01:41Two vehicles were also seized.
01:58Commissioner Azizi said the suspects were detained
02:01to assist investigations under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
