00:00The tiles have just arrived, and they don't look the right colour to me.
00:09Just cutting the snail bottom off, I'm afraid.
00:12Being in a vegan house, you can't be chopping off the animals' heads, can you?
00:19It's looking great in here now, isn't it?
00:21Finally.
00:22Finally!
00:24Can I go in?
00:30I love it. I want to swap bedrooms with her.
00:38He was here with us from the start, but I think we need a bit more help.
00:44We're going to take away that bar and add a door which will go straight through into the gym.
00:49Okay, my own gym.
00:54This is that much concrete.
00:59We're essentially breaking into a bank.
01:01Right.
01:02Do you think I look protected enough?
01:04I think you look protected enough.
01:07Those will always be there as part of my house.
01:11Yeah, just...
01:12Since moving into their forever home on the Costa del Sol some five months ago,
01:28Yay!
01:29Hi!
01:31Jasmine Harmon and her husband John
01:33have completed phase one of their renovation.
01:36It is so fantastic to have a few rooms finally finished
01:43and not just finished, but nicely finished, beautifully finished.
01:48I'm so happy with the way Joy and Albion's bedrooms have turned out
02:01and also the family bathroom is looking stunning.
02:09After a series of mishaps and delays,
02:11it's taken a lot longer than originally planned.
02:14With two more phases to go and about three months to do it,
02:17sooner or later this project is going to have to shift up a gear or three
02:21if they're going to have any chance of hitting their summer deadline.
02:25I would love to be able to invite family and friends over
02:30in the summer to see the house all finished.
02:33You know, there might be a few rooms that I have to keep the doors closed.
02:39Finishing the three rooms we have, great,
02:42but that is a tiny percentage of the bigger picture of this house.
02:46We've still got a big garden to sort out,
02:52driveway to sort out,
02:54basement to sort out,
02:56garage to sort out,
02:58kitchen to sort out,
03:00stairs to the back, garden to sort out, roof terraces to sort out,
03:02utility room to sort out,
03:04bathroom to sort out.
03:06Still quite a lot to sort out.
03:10But one step at a time.
03:12Phase two is going to focus on the driveway, pool area and basement.
03:16Once that's complete, the family can live down there,
03:18while the main bedroom, kitchen and living room on the ground floor
03:22are tackled in phase three.
03:24Project one of phase two for John represents a key milestone in this family's new life in Spain.
03:34The pool has always been a tiny bit of a mystery.
03:37We had always guessed that it wasn't really working because it's never had any water in it,
03:42even when we came round to view the house.
03:45My assumptions are people don't tend to sit with pools empty for years and years unless they're broken.
03:52So my guess, my deduction is, the pool doesn't hold water.
03:57There's two scenarios to this pool and getting it working.
04:01One is a fairly quick, easy fix of filling in holes in the grouting.
04:06If that doesn't work, scenario two is digging down seven feet,
04:11finding a pipe, repairing the pipe, fixing the pipe.
04:16I don't want it to be scenario two.
04:19I am praying for my wallet, for our time, and for the kids.
04:24But it's scenario one, and then in three days' time we have water in the pool,
04:28and the water level stays where it should.
04:31Come on.
04:33Échale ahí, Tim.
04:34¿Esta?
04:35¿Dónde está mojado?
04:36Sí, sí, sí.
04:38Oh.
04:40¿Aquí no?
04:41Sí, de una.
04:43¿Bien o no?
04:44Eso sí.
04:45Le explico.
04:46Tú lo haces, tú lo haces, mira.
04:48Bien, bien, bien.
04:50Oh, God.
04:51I'm leaving alive.
04:57Oh, my God, it sets so quickly.
04:59We've had quite a few different opinions on our pool and what we can do to get it fixed.
05:11It could cost probably €20,000 or more if we end up having to dig out the whole pool to find the leak.
05:20So, it's a bit scary.
05:23I mean, I'm just keeping everything crossed.
05:26Let's hope filling in all those gaps with new grout does the job.
05:31So, John's still got a bit of a limp and the thrombosis slowed things down, his leg is now healing well and he's back on track, ticking off the recovery milestones.
05:42So, the good news is the doctor's given me the sign off so that I can drive again, which is great.
05:48It's been about eight weeks since I last drove.
05:51Whoo!
05:53I feel like driving is three-quarters of the way there.
05:57The last quarter is just polishing off my walking and stability and I'll be back to normal.
06:03Are you going to pick up the kids?
06:05Yeah, I'm going.
06:06Go, because otherwise you're going to be late.
06:08Good luck making decisions.
06:09Run.
06:10Joke.
06:11Hop.
06:12Adios.
06:13Adios.
06:14Adios.
06:15You sort of forget how much freedom you get from driving.
06:30And at the moment, driving is actually physically easier than walking.
06:39First drive home after Denny's dodgy leg.
06:46I guess for Jazz, also, it's a little bit of freedom for her.
06:50She can have five minutes headspace on her own.
06:53I don't know what to do with myself.
06:54I'm alone in the house.
06:56It's really weird.
06:58You know, to have him not being here, he's become just like a part of the furniture over the last couple of months.
07:05And so him not being here, it kind of feels a bit disorientating, but nice.
07:11I can have a cup of tea in peace for a minute.
07:16Keen to turn up the heat on this renovation, Jasmine's called in some support.
07:22I think we need an architect to just help us with a few tricky areas.
07:31John met Tamsin working on a property show and she was the architect behind all the stuff that you see on screen.
07:41And they've worked together for a long, long time.
07:43So we figured, well, let's see if she can work her magic for us.
07:48Tamsin has already arranged to get all the measurements and has had time to work up some ideas.
07:56With a basement key to this phase, they're heading straight down there.
08:00So on your plans, does this essentially stay as it is, the staircase?
08:06Yes.
08:07OK.
08:08I don't think there's too much we could do.
08:09You could put some glass in the door at the top to allow a bit more light in.
08:13Yeah, that's a good idea.
08:14But I think it's better for sound to contain everyone down here.
08:18And especially if it's a party room as well.
08:21Exactly, yeah.
08:22Tamsin's plan for the large main space in the basement is exactly that.
08:28An entertaining stroke party room with a cinema snug at one end.
08:33I have a question about the cinema space and whether you actually see it as a separate room
08:38or if it's just a snug area within here.
08:41I kind of feel like it's more like just somewhere cosy to sit like a snug with a big screen.
08:49And I think it could be for us if we have a movie night, you know, with the kids
08:54or if they've got friends over and they're playing computer games or something like that, they can be out of our way.
09:00Yes.
09:01Or as they get older, they can get, you know, we can...
09:03Yeah.
09:04Even more reason to have the door at the top of the stairs.
09:06Yeah.
09:07You can catch.
09:08I've never had a room the size of the basement that we've got here.
09:12It's huge.
09:14It's absolutely huge.
09:16Mine and John's first flat that we bought together was way smaller than that entire basement.
09:25Yeah, it's a great space.
09:31The other half of the basement, which is currently a garage, storeroom and toilet, Tamsin plans to split up into a guest bedroom, shower room and gym.
09:42And we're going to take away that bar and add a door, which will go straight through into the bathroom.
09:47And then you could have some doors out from either the gym or the guest bedroom because we're dropping the ground levels outside.
09:54Okay.
09:55I have my own gym.
09:59I have to use it.
10:00I know.
10:01That's the pressure now.
10:03So this is where we've got the Wow Island, is it?
10:07I suggest having a big entertaining bar down here.
10:11Down here.
10:12That's your food prep for barbecues.
10:14That's your kind of cocktail prep.
10:16That's the, you know, servery.
10:17Oh, John would love that.
10:18Once upon a time, before I met him, he used to be a barman when he was at uni.
10:24So he used to do all the flaring.
10:25It's like, oh, he's in his element.
10:27He'll be absolutely in his element.
10:28It also means that you can have bar seating.
10:31So it's a bit more social to be able to sit up at something.
10:34Yeah.
10:35Okay.
10:36I like that.
10:37And what's the other option for that?
10:38So the other option is more similar to where it is now.
10:42Putting a sort of bar, double stack the bar there.
10:45So almost like a little kitchenette there.
10:47So you'd have a sink.
10:49Yeah.
10:50You could have a dress fridge underneath.
10:52Yeah.
10:53Tamsin's ideas for the basement were quite different.
10:57Took me a little while to come round to them.
10:59But actually, I quite like, I'm definitely coming round to the idea of having a big island down there.
11:05It will be the part of the house that everyone remembers and everyone talks about.
11:12The outside stairs up to the first floor balcony are another key consideration in this phase.
11:17So the concern is that if we put the stairs in that corner, we lose a bit of light, we can widen the other window to gain what we've lost from the staircase.
11:28That's a good idea.
11:29So you could have open tread risers, which would allow the light in.
11:32My personal point of view on this is I don't particularly ever like looking through a staircase.
11:38Yeah.
11:39So I would block it in and possibly have an outdoor store under the staircase.
11:42Right.
11:43And then just make the window bigger.
11:44And then you have a couple of steps up to the garden through that door and then widen the other window.
11:50Okay.
11:51I suppose I can live with that.
11:53It's really hard.
11:55I mean, even though looking at it on the plans, I'm still finding it quite hard to visualise it and thinking, oh, will it be enough?
12:02But I think you just have to trust the process, don't you?
12:05Yeah.
12:09Oh, so that's the rope you put there.
12:11Yeah.
12:12Earlier.
12:13So we're going to use this to demonstrate the angle of the stairs and how it works in this location.
12:18But actually, that's not too bad because that is not taking up as much of the doorway below as I thought.
12:29That would be really good.
12:30Is there a particular gradient?
12:32Because that angle looks, I mean, it looks fine to me, but...
12:35Well, the gentler the slope, the easier the stairs are and the more likely you are to use them.
12:40Yeah.
12:41And there are regulations of how steep they could be.
12:43Okay.
12:44But this looks okay to you.
12:45This is okay.
12:46The other decision that you'll have is just what the stairs are made of and whether they're solid or not.
12:51I definitely always maintained that we had to have stairs coming down to here and I actually think that's a much better option.
12:58This is the best place for the stairs without a shadow of a doubt, in my opinion.
13:03So thank you.
13:04Yeah.
13:05It's nice to have come out here with something you hadn't thought about before.
13:09Overall, I think Tamsyn's really listened to us.
13:17Her plans are fantastic.
13:19She's given us options.
13:21She's talked us through the pros and cons.
13:23And I think we're in a really good place now to make decisions.
13:30We're hanging out in the pool after school.
13:45Let's hope after our repairs, kids, in a week or two, this has water in.
13:51And you'll be floating on it eating ice cream.
13:54With a little help, John's re-grouted the pool, hoping that quick fix, costing a few hundred pounds in materials and man-hours,
14:02will save the time and expense of digging up the piping underneath the pool.
14:08Look how happy and excited you look.
14:10Don't try to look too excited, Albie.
14:12Jo, what are we going to do this morning?
14:14Start filling up the pool to see if the leak's still there.
14:19The only side problem is currently the only tap that Daddy can connect the hose to is at the opposite end of the house.
14:28On the roof.
14:29The roof.
14:30The roof terrace.
14:31So who's going to go down to the pool and receive the hose and who's going to be on the roof and setting the hose down?
14:36We'll go down.
14:37Me and Joy will go down.
14:39Pass it down.
14:40Come on, Albie, let's get the hose ready.
14:50No, don't tend it down yet, babe.
14:52So Joy and I are waiting down here.
14:55The boys are up on the roof.
14:57They're going to send us the hose down.
14:59We're going to put a little bit of water in it and see if it holds.
15:02Are you ready?
15:03We're ready.
15:06Do you want to come and catch the hose as it comes down?
15:12Why is it attached to a piece of string?
15:15Safety.
15:16All you have to do is untie the string.
15:18I can't reach it.
15:21The string needs to come much longer.
15:24No.
15:25Can I turn it on?
15:27No.
15:31Are you ready now?
15:32We are filling up the pool.
15:38The hose is coming from the rooftop.
15:39We're just going to put a little bit of water in there.
15:42I mean, at the moment, it's looking pretty murky and it's hard to tell whether it's going to hold water now that we've done a sort of small repair job to some of the obvious cracks that were there.
15:57But once we've filled it up a little bit, we'll mark it on the wall and see how quickly it goes down.
16:13So, test and away, time to move on to a bit of a restoration project.
16:25We feel like it's important to keep some of the original elements of the house.
16:30And so, there was far too much metal work already in the house to rip it all off and replace it.
16:34So, finding Chris and repairing the metal work was important for us.
16:43And also, the metal work that was there is actually pretty good.
16:46So, really, some of it needs repairing and then there needs to be a bit made to fit on the end to sort of complete the wall.
16:54With the gates, window covers and the odd bit of fence, there's a few days of work for Chris there.
17:08But that will have to wait as a change of weather puts a hold on any outside work.
17:13Obviously, living in the Costa del Sol, we have so much sunshine for most of the year.
17:19Not today, unfortunately.
17:22Because we really, really want to try and be as green and as sustainable and as environmentally friendly as possible.
17:31I found someone that does solar panels.
17:35And I thought, that would be amazing if we could get solar panels and power the house off of that and save money.
17:42Then it kind of seems like a no-brainer.
17:45Hi, Karin.
17:46Hi.
17:47Come on in.
17:49Welcome to our building site.
17:51Nice to meet you.
17:52Nice to meet you.
17:54It sounds like it's raining even more.
17:56Hang on.
17:58It's absolutely pouring now, Karin.
18:00I don't know if you want to go out there.
18:02Have a little look at the neighbours.
18:05Ah, yeah.
18:06I see.
18:07Yeah.
18:08That roof terrace, we want to keep it usable.
18:10So, we have got a little bit of roof space above here.
18:15Yeah.
18:16So, yeah.
18:17You can put solar panels here.
18:18And I think you probably can fit around three solar panels here.
18:21But you probably need a lot more.
18:23At least around eight panels.
18:25Oh, really?
18:26So, we need to find more space.
18:29Space.
18:30But you could also here, if you still want to have this space usable, it's quite common.
18:35Also, you put a pergola and you can put solar on top of that.
18:37You can still use the terrace and you don't have to put the pergola on the whole terrace.
18:41The whole terrace.
18:42How long does it normally take until the panels can pay for themselves, in terms of your energy saving?
18:47It's like the payback time here is usually between three to five years.
18:51Really?
18:52So, it's quite good payoff.
18:53That's not bad, is it?
18:54No, it's really good.
18:55Can you give me an idea of costs or does it vary?
18:58It varies.
18:59It depends how many panels and the labour cost, what kind of work we have to do to install the panels at your house.
19:07So, would you be able to drop me an email or something with a quote?
19:10Yeah, so what I will do, I will summarise this and see different options and see where we actually will fit the panels.
19:15And then I will summarise it and send a proposal to you.
19:18Oh, thank you very much.
19:19So, you will have it shortly.
19:20That's brilliant.
19:21Okay.
19:22Let's head back down.
19:24The idea of being able to have green energy, to power the whole house with solar energy.
19:33The thing is, because we have such a limited amount of roof space, it's not an easy process.
19:39You don't just say, yeah, bring the people around, they can install it straight away and we can get going.
19:45There's a whole process.
19:47So, we'd need to design the roof terrace, put in a pergola, finish that project first,
19:53before we can then do the solar panels.
19:55So, I do want to do it, but it's not going to be a quick thing.
20:08Jasmine and John have a few projects bubbling away and some seeds in the ground, but not much is really happening on site at the moment.
20:15It feels like it might be time for a bit of a shake-up.
20:18We have got so much work left to do and it's just impossible.
20:25You know, no one could do this amount of work on their own in the timeframe that we've got,
20:31because we want to try and get everything finished by the summer.
20:34So, Carlos has got some other jobs as well that he's committed to.
20:40So, we've come to a point where we're going to have to part ways.
20:45Really sad, because Carlos has become part of the family, really.
20:58I love Carlos. Genuinely, there's a little bit of my heart that he's a decent guy.
21:06But I don't think we'll get to the summer with our deadline with just Carlos and marching alone.
21:18Thank you very much.
21:19Thank you very much.
21:22Thanks, and blessings, and blessings.
21:24That you are very good.
21:26It was a pleasure to meet you, that we met very well.
21:30Don't cry.
21:35Bye, family.
21:36Thanks.
21:42Why are you crying?
21:43I'm just crying at everything.
21:47Carlos has just been, like, part of the family, hasn't he,
21:51since we moved in, since before we moved in.
21:54So I'm just sad to see him go.
21:57There'll be a big Carlos-shaped hole in our lives,
22:01but it won't be forever.
22:03We'll definitely see him again.
22:09He'll always be part of this house
22:12because he was here with us from the start.
22:15But I think that we need a bit more help.
22:21We need to drive this forward
22:24and get it done as quickly as possible.
22:42It's been two and a half days since we've put some water in the pool
22:51at the weekend with the kids.
22:54And definitely not leaking water as quickly as it was before.
22:59So I'm hoping that the water level that has gone down,
23:04which is only a few millimetres, is just natural evaporation.
23:10Time to give it a clean and get it ready to fill it right up.
23:14Jazz is taking one for the team.
23:18We don't have a net.
23:19I don't know why we don't have a net.
23:20Why don't we put on it?
23:22And so because that vent isn't on,
23:24which you're also going to put on slightly,
23:26before we head into the test water,
23:27Jazz is having a little dip.
23:29Obviously I can't go up because of my dodgy leg.
23:32Do you need to get a net?
23:39I bet you wish you were only cleaning the bathtub now.
23:41Look, you've just started there and you've got all that to go, look.
23:47The final stages of the pool.
23:50Cleaning slash trying to repair.
23:53Taking a bit longer than we thought, eh?
23:59With the pool project going swimmingly
24:01and having already said goodbye to Carlos,
24:03the builder Jasmine and John had been working with
24:05pretty much since they got the keys,
24:07the new guy is now on board and on site.
24:10Jazz had sort of put the word out.
24:12She'd spoken to a few of her former house hunters in this area
24:15and loads of people recommended this guy called Dominic.
24:21Hello. How are you?
24:23I'm good, you?
24:26You ready to make some noise?
24:29Absolutely, come on in.
24:30OK, thanks.
24:35I'm Dominic.
24:36I'm a project manager here on the Costa del Sol.
24:41I've lived in Spain 17 years.
24:43I've spent a lot of that time working in Gibraltar
24:46and now I work within this area.
24:50It's going to be a lovely property.
24:52Plenty of work to be done inside and out.
24:56Yeah, finished by the summer?
24:58I think so.
24:59It doesn't worry me.
25:00As long as everything lines up.
25:03I think Dominic should stand a good chance
25:05of being able to get us to completing everything by the summer
25:09because he's got more resources, you know, he's got more people available
25:14and it's a bigger company.
25:17So, fingers crossed, we'll be able to get there.
25:24While Dominic and his team get phase two underway,
25:28welder Chris is back and making great headway with the front gates.
25:32And with all the protective gear and flashing lights,
25:35Jasmine's keen to get involved.
25:37Chris even has vegan rather than the usual leather gloves for her.
25:41Right.
25:42I'm ready, Chris.
25:43Yeah.
25:44Do you think I look protected enough?
25:46I think you look protected enough.
25:47I think boiler suits are backing fashion on.
25:49Yeah, yeah.
25:50So, what we're going to do is we need to weld on these tree foils
25:54using the arc rod like this and bringing this like this.
25:58Do you use any other material or it just melts the metal of the two pieces?
26:02So, this rod is going to go smaller and smaller and smaller.
26:07It will take a couple of goes, I think.
26:09Practice.
26:10Yeah.
26:11How long have you been doing it?
26:12I've been a welder now for eight years.
26:15I used to make wheelchairs.
26:17Oh, really?
26:18Yeah.
26:19I could have done with one of those just recently.
26:21My husband broke his leg.
26:22Shall we get some welding done then so you can get out of all the gear?
26:25Yeah, let's do it.
26:26The problem is don't look at this without your helmet on.
26:29Don't look at it?
26:30It's basically when you're melting the metal,
26:32it's like all of the bad stuff from the sun.
26:34You're UVA and you're UVB.
26:36Right.
26:39Here, so it gets over your head.
26:41Yeah, I've got a big head.
26:43That's all right.
26:44And then we tighten it up.
26:45Jazz loves getting hands on.
26:46She's very happy to get hands on.
26:48I think she would do more of the renovation if she could.
26:51So, you're going to go start here?
26:52Yeah.
26:53You want to have it kind of angled a bit more that way.
26:57And you want to kind of go like this motion.
26:59I'm going to put you about here and then I'll flick my mask down
27:02because otherwise I can't see.
27:03Okay.
27:09Oh, yeah.
27:10It's quite tricky, isn't it?
27:11Yeah, that was all good.
27:13That's good for the first time.
27:15If I change it around then we can do another one, eh?
27:26Yep.
27:27And that comes towards me.
27:28Keep the shading.
27:29Yeah, that's it.
27:30That's it.
27:31That's it.
27:32Yep.
27:33You can stop this.
27:34Nice.
27:35Yee!
27:36That's really good.
27:37That's well improved.
27:38Once it's finished,
27:40let's just tap it off.
27:42So, I'll come back through with the grinder,
27:44make them all a bit stronger.
27:46Ah, you'll have to tell me which ones they are.
27:48I'll put your ones at that end and at that end
27:51and then you know that they're your ones.
27:53Those are my ones.
27:54I'll tell everyone when they come to visit.
27:55I welded those.
27:56Yeah.
27:57Thank you so much.
27:58No worries.
27:59I'll chat with you in a bit.
28:00Yeah.
28:01See ya.
28:02That was actually amazing.
28:06Hopefully, those two that I did will always be there as part of my house.
28:14With phase two of the renovation now in full swing, Jasmine and the family are taking a well-earned break.
28:22Hopping aboard a popular local form of transport to discover the native wildlife that's right on their doorstep.
28:31Today we're going out on a boat trip from Estepona.
28:35Really excited about it.
28:37Oh, yeah.
28:38Let's get on this boat.
28:40We just decided to take a family day and go out on our own sort of mini version of a holiday.
28:47Oh, look.
28:48There's a paddle board on the back of that boat, Albie.
28:50Oh, should we have brought swimming things?
28:54We've just sent Albie in his dolphin bait.
28:57Hola, buenos dias.
28:59Hola, gracias.
29:01It feels like it's been a long time coming, but it's amazing to finally be out and about
29:06and go and do family things again with a leg that is 90% working again.
29:11Oh, how nice is this?
29:14Albie's going to have a sleep.
29:16There's a seat.
29:19Looks like it.
29:20Oh.
29:21No?
29:22Albie, you're like the captain.
29:24I'm not the best on boats.
29:26I get quite bad seasickness.
29:29In fact, I get all kinds of motion sickness, which is terrible for someone who travels as much as I do.
29:36I did my 10 metre swimming badge when I was about six or seven years old.
29:42So I think I'll be all right if I do end up in the water.
29:46I actually love swimming, especially in the sea.
29:49So who knows?
29:50If we see some dolphins, I might just jump in as well.
29:52Although I forgot to bring my swimming costume.
29:55Oh, well, I probably won't.
29:56What's that smell?
29:57It's the smell of the sea.
29:58It smells like Aston.
29:59It smells like Aston.
30:00It smells like Aston.
30:01It smells like Aston.
30:02It smells like Aston.
30:03Albie and Mummy.
30:04Albie and Mummy.
30:05Albie and Mummy.
30:06Albie, ready?
30:07Come on, keep your eyes peeled for dolphins, Albie.
30:08Yay!
30:09So what you have to do, Joy, is keep an eye out on the horizon for any dolphin-like movement.
30:22Can you do your dolphin noise?
30:25My dolphin noise?
30:26Oh, yeah.
30:27Daddy's really good at dolphin impressions, isn't he?
30:28My dolphins.
30:29You want me to try and call the dolphins?
30:30Yeah, go on.
30:31Communicate with them.
30:32Tell them we're here.
30:33Ready?
30:35I don't think they're going to hear him.
31:01I don't think they're going to hear him!
31:02Now, having lived by the sea for a while, I recognise its amazing restorative power.
31:11Oh, there's a little sailing boat.
31:15It is amazing and I do feel that being by the sea helps me in so many ways.
31:24Helps me to relax, helps me to rejuvenate
31:28and definitely feels like my mental health benefits from being by the sea.
31:35I feel like I'm so small on this planet and all my problems are so small
31:42that it makes them seem easy to overcome.
31:52Fuck yourself there!
31:54Oh my God!
31:57Oh!
31:58Oh, life with you is always so much fun!
32:02Squeezing my leg!
32:05It's nice though, isn't it, being able to just do stuff like this any time.
32:11Amazing.
32:13Incredibly privileged.
32:15I was thinking that last night.
32:17How lucky we are.
32:20Amongst all the stress of the house.
32:23It is nice to have a little break from it.
32:26Even though all the time that we're out here, my thoughts are still keep jumping back to what's going on back home.
32:36It was potentially a great time for the family to escape the house.
32:46As Dominic and one of his team, Liam, are getting stuck straight in.
32:50And like builders generally do, kicking off with a bit of demolition.
32:54The bar in the corner is the only fixed structure in the main basement room.
33:04Once it's gone, they'll have one big open space to work with.
33:08Come on dolphins, keep your eyes out for them peeking up.
33:22Click, click, click, click, click!
33:28Help me here! Help me! There's the light!
33:30Look, there! There, there, there!
33:38Wow!
33:39There, right, they're all floating around here, watch.
33:41Around there, look.
33:42There, over there, look!
33:43There, there, there, there!
33:44You have a little flap of its tail.
33:46That one just keeps coming up over and over again.
33:50Oh, my God! I saw its face!
33:53Wild dolphins, for me, growing up in central London,
33:57it, it, it was never part of that.
34:00You know, my realms of possibility of life.
34:04But, now it is.
34:07It's here, this side!
34:08Oh, no, no!
34:09Be careful!
34:10Slowly, slowly, slowly, slowly.
34:11Be careful.
34:14Wow!
34:16Oh, that's cool!
34:17Oh, that's so cute!
34:19Oh, look there, I just saw one over there.
34:24The question is, how many did we see?
34:26How many different dolphins do you think there were?
34:29I think there was, like, four or three.
34:32Today's trip out on the boat was amazing!
34:36It was so calm, it was so tranquil, it was beautiful scenery,
34:41and we even had the amazing treat of being able to see dolphins in the wild,
34:47which, I mean, it was beautiful.
34:50It was beautiful.
34:51I even cried.
34:52I cried at everything.
34:54That was amazing!
34:56What a great opportunity to spend the morning with the kids and with the family.
34:59I mean, this is partly the reason we moved to Spain,
35:01and, er, when you do things like a boat trip, we can't escape.
35:05The kids can't escape.
35:06They have to spend the morning with us, and it was good.
35:08Everybody help me, say Dolphins!
35:11Dolphins!
35:12On another sun-drenched Costa del Sol day, Jasmine and John's new builder Dominic
35:32has already removed the old bar that stood in the basement
35:36and is now looking at architect Tamsin's plan of adding a door
35:40to provide easy access to the bathroom.
35:43Hello!
35:45How's it going?
35:46I know you want a door here, but this was once under the ground,
35:51or the subterranean part of the house.
35:54So, this is that much concrete.
35:59With reinforcing.
36:01Coms.
36:02Right.
36:03So, we're essentially breaking into a bank.
36:06So, it was there, it was there.
36:08We're going to need to break into a bank, to be honest.
36:10That's over a foot.
36:11That's about a foot.
36:12Yeah, it's about a foot of concrete.
36:14So, no...
36:15Reinforced concrete.
36:16So, no bricks.
36:17No bricks.
36:18Nothing.
36:19About three days, I guess, to cut through this.
36:22Are you kidding?
36:24We'll have to hire a bigger machine to take this down,
36:27because if you had something like this, or normal, it would burn out.
36:33We're talking a lot of horrible, nasty noise.
36:37Why is nothing ever straightforward?
36:39Is it just stuff?
36:40And this is only the start of it?
36:43Well, yes.
36:44It's a renovation.
36:46You know, if it was new, things have to work like they're meant to work,
36:49but in a renovation, things turn up.
36:52When you look at it on the architect's plans,
36:55coming from the swimming pool,
36:57let's say the kids are in there,
36:59one of them needs to go to the loo.
37:00They come round here,
37:02and in a perfect world, they go straight through that door
37:05and into the bathroom, which is there.
37:07Or they come all the way down to that door,
37:12which doesn't seem that much further,
37:13but then you've got to come all the way back.
37:15So it's not just that distance, is it?
37:17It's that distance plus that distance.
37:18And the whole one will be wet.
37:19And everywhere will be wet.
37:20And every time they go in the pool,
37:21I'll be mopping this floor.
37:22So I don't know.
37:24I mean, that does throw a bit of a spanner in the works, doesn't it?
37:26All right.
37:28All right.
37:29Thanks, Dominic.
37:30We'll have to have a chat about it.
37:31I was going to say crack on, but don't go.
37:33Don't crack on.
37:34All right.
37:35It seems like everything we try to do,
37:39you know, all these grand plans that we've got,
37:42something unexpected gets thrown up
37:45and we then have to rethink because of costs,
37:49because of time, because of disruption,
37:52all the other implications and weigh everything up as in
37:55what's going to give us the best value and benefit
38:00to the work and the money we've got to put into it.
38:02It's tricky.
38:05Very tricky.
38:08With that one still up in the air,
38:10Jasmine shifts focus to another project
38:13that's been waiting for a fix.
38:15After meeting with Karin, she sent us a quote.
38:19The quote came back at around 7,000 euros for the solar panels.
38:24And obviously we've only got a very small amount of actual roof space here
38:29where we could put the solar panels.
38:31She said we could fit three up there, but that wouldn't be enough.
38:35So we'd need to find space for another probably five or so more panels.
38:39And the suggestion was to put a pergola.
38:43And it would run from about halfway along here all the way over to around about the chimney.
38:48So it would take up quite a lot of space up here.
38:51And also building a pergola is not cheap.
38:54And I don't know if we can really come up with that right now.
38:58Karin's going to come back again and have another look to see if there's somewhere else around
39:03that we could put the extra panels.
39:05So then we'll be able to make a decision.
39:08I think if we could just go for the three panels and get as much electricity off of the solar panels as we can
39:15to contribute to the rest of the house, then it would be a no brainer.
39:19We'd do it straight away.
39:20While a decision on the solar panels might be a few days away, down in the basement rooms, it's time to crack on.
39:31The thing with having a really huge space is knowing how to arrange it to get the most out of it.
39:41So it's really important that you are clear in what you want each area to do and how you plan to use the space.
39:48Because otherwise, you know, things could just get a bit lost down there.
39:53And it seems three days to create easy access to the bathroom from the pool is not an option.
39:59I think for the amount of time, disruption, noise, dust, to just gain like a couple of metres, I don't think it's worth it.
40:11And as much as I think, you know, it was a great idea on Tamsin's design,
40:15in the end, it just wasn't practical.
40:18It's like a cupboard here.
40:26Basically, you want to have power in this cupboard.
40:29In the garage, tech mad John is keen to focus on power sockets.
40:34Apparently that's a symbol for a two-gang power socket, so the electrician knows where to put them.
40:44But it does look a bit like I've sprayed two boobs on the wall.
40:48Maybe I'll have to do a different side.
40:50They are so heavy!
41:02Oh, golden, Bennett!
41:04Jasmine's more focused on the big picture.
41:06And with two options for the kitchen area, a decision needs to be made.
41:10I love Tamsin's suggestion of having a huge, long kitchen island, which would be great for entertaining.
41:20The other option that Tamsin gave was a little kitchen in the corner, which would be quite functional and it wouldn't take up as much room.
41:29John thinks that it would be better to have a small kitchenette in the corner because it's nearer to the back door, it's just going to be more functional.
41:38So, we're going for his option because the basement is his domain.
41:45So, we're thinking sink there.
41:48Yeah, because of all the drainage and things on the side of that wall.
41:51And then, so you'll have a metre or so here.
41:56Yeah.
41:57It's like your...
41:58Yeah, so if you're there, the kids can always come behind and pass a drink out of the window.
42:03Yeah, so there, basically.
42:11It's quite dinky now, I look at it.
42:13That's what they all say.
42:15From the start of one project to hopefully the end of another.
42:28It's been a lot of fun and games trying to get this pool filled.
42:33So, we're now just filling up the last bit and it's crunch time really because the good news is after testing it with just a little bit of water,
42:43it seems like the repair that we've done on the pool means it's now holding water, which is great news.
42:56And I think that's probably saved us in the region of 15,000 to 20,000 euros.
43:03Because that's probably what it would have cost if we had to dig up the entire pool.
43:08So, honestly, John and I were so happy, so excited when we realised it was holding water.
43:15And hopefully we can get it ready for swimming in soon.
43:23It's a momentous day. The pool is full and hopefully will remain full.
43:29Oh, Albie's going to be the first person into the pool.
43:33Admittedly, only ankle deep.
43:36How is it Albs?
43:38Good.
43:41Is it refreshing?
43:42You're the first person in. How does it feel?
43:46You'll forever be the first person to get in the pool.
43:50It's quite chilly, but when you get a nice sunny day, it is very inviting to go in the pool.
43:57I quite like cold water swimming anyway, so I think it will be fine.
44:02Famous last words.
44:04Because it's xDemo, it's 50% off.
44:18It's one of the biggest decisions that we need to make.
44:21Having an interior designer to help with not only the design, but also the sourcing of the products is invaluable.
44:31Oh, what about that mirror? That would look fantastic.
44:34Am I making this look so...
44:36That's it, that's it.
44:37And then...
44:40There have been a few delays with tiling this floor.
44:43I feel like a house renovation requires a lot of wine.
44:48I tell you, there is never a dull moment here.
45:01There is just a little necessity, and there is aぇ...
45:03Give us lots more questions, see it, and love it.
45:04If you guys work at home, because you can come up and get a lot of wine.
45:07If you want to be more stockaendescha.com.
45:11If you want to beat yourself up, just let's make it up good.
45:13I'll let us take a little Olympics.
45:20Tom Stprottock.
