00:00The tiles have just arrived, and they don't look the right colour to me.
00:09Just cutting the snail bottom off, I'm afraid.
00:12Being in a vegan house, you can't be chopping off the animals' heads, can you?
00:19It's looking great in here now, isn't it?
00:21Finally.
00:22Finally!
00:24Can I go in?
00:30I love it. I want to swap bedrooms with her.
00:38He was here with us from the start, but I think we need a bit more help.
00:44We're going to take away that bar and add a door which will go straight through into the gym.
00:49Okay, my own gym.
00:54This is that much concrete.
00:59We're essentially breaking into a bank.
01:01Right.
01:02Do you think I look protected enough?
01:04I think you look protected enough.
01:07Those will always be there as part of my house.
01:11Since moving into their forever home on the Costa del Sol some five months ago.
01:27Hi!
01:28Hi!
01:30Jasmine Harmon and her husband John have completed phase one of their renovation.
01:36It is so fantastic to have a few rooms finally finished.
01:43And not just finished, but nicely finished, beautifully finished.
01:58I'm so happy with the way Joy and Albion's bedrooms have turned out and also the family bathroom is looking stunning.
02:10After a series of mishaps and delays, it's taken a lot longer than originally planned.
02:15With two more phases to go and about three months to do it,
02:19sooner or later this project is going to have to shift up a gear or three
02:23if they're going to have any chance of hitting their summer deadline.
02:26I would love to be able to invite family and friends over in the summer to see the house all finished.
02:34You know, there might be a few rooms that I have to keep the doors closed.
02:40Finishing the three rooms we have, great, but that is a tiny percentage of the bigger picture of this house.
02:50We've still got a big garden to sort out, driveway to sort out.
02:55Basement to sort out, garage to sort out, kitchen to sort out, stairs to the back, garden to sort out, roof terraces to sort out, utility room to sort out, bathroom to sort out.
03:07Still quite a lot to sort out.
03:09But one step at a time. Phase two is going to focus on the driveway, pool area and basement.
03:17Once that's complete, the family can live down there, while the main bedroom, kitchen and living room on the ground floor are tackled in phase three.
03:25Project one of phase two for John represents a key milestone in this family's new life in Spain.
03:35The pool has always been a tiny bit of a mystery. We had always guessed that it wasn't really working because it's never had any water in it even when we came round to view the house.
03:44My assumptions are people don't tend to sit with pools empty for years and years unless they're broken.
03:52So my guess, my deduction is the pool doesn't hold water.
03:56There's two scenarios to this pool and getting it working. One is a fairly quick, easy fix of filling in holes in the grouting.
04:06If that doesn't work, scenario two is digging down seven feet, finding a pipe, repairing the pipe, fixing the pipe.
04:15I don't want it to be scenario two. I am praying for my wallet, for our time and for the kids.
04:25But it's scenario one and that in three days time we have water in the pool and the water level stays where it should. Come on.
04:34This one?
04:36This one?
04:37Yes, yes, yes.
04:38Oh.
04:39This one?
04:42This one?
04:43Yes, from one.
04:44Good or not?
04:45Yes, yes.
04:46I'll explain.
04:47You do it, you do it.
04:48Look.
04:49Ah, good, good, good.
04:51Oh, God.
04:52I made it alive.
04:58Oh, my God, it sets so quickly.
05:04We've had quite a few different opinions on our pool and what we can do to get it fixed.
05:11It could cost probably 20,000 euros or more if we end up having to dig out the whole pool to find the leak.
05:21So, it's a bit scary. I mean, I'm just keeping everything crossed.
05:27Let's hope filling in all those gaps with new grout does the job.
05:32While John's still got a bit of a limp and the thrombosis slowed things down, his leg is now healing well and he's back on track, ticking off the recovery milestones.
05:42So, the good news is the doctor's given me the sign off so that I can drive again, which is great.
05:49It's been about eight weeks since I last drove.
05:52Whoo!
05:53I feel like driving is three-quarters of the way there.
05:58The last quarter is just polishing off my walking and stability and I'll be back to normal.
06:04Are you going to pick up the kids?
06:06Yeah, I'm going.
06:07Go, because otherwise you're going to be late.
06:09Good luck making decisions.
06:10Run.
06:11Joke.
06:12Hop.
06:13Adios.
06:14Adios.
06:15Adios.
06:16You sort of forget how much freedom you get from driving.
06:30And at the moment, driving is actually physically easier than walking.
06:39First drive home after Danny's dodgy leg.
06:43I guess for Jazz, also, it's a little bit of freedom for her.
06:50She can have five minutes head space on her own.
06:53I don't know what to do with myself.
06:55I'm alone in the house.
06:57It's really weird, you know, to have him not being here.
07:01He's become just like a part of the furniture over the last couple of months.
07:06And so, him not being here, it kind of feels a bit disorientating.
07:10But nice.
07:12I can have a cup of tea in peace for a minute.
07:17Keen to turn up the heat on this renovation, Jasmine's called in some support.
07:22I think we need an architect to just help us with a few tricky areas.
07:32John met Tamsin working on a property show.
07:37And she was the architect behind all the stuff that you see on screen.
07:42And they've worked together for a long, long time.
07:44So, we figured, well, let's see if she can work her magic for us.
07:49Tamsin has already arranged to get all the measurements and has had time to work up some ideas.
07:57With a basement key to this phase, they're heading straight down there.
08:01So, on your plans, does this essentially stay as it is, the staircase?
08:07Yes.
08:08OK.
08:09I don't think there's too much we could do.
08:11You could put some glass in the door at the top to allow a bit more light in.
08:14Yeah, that's a good idea.
08:15But I think it's better for sound to contain everyone down here.
08:19And especially if it's a party room as well.
08:22Exactly, yeah.
08:25Tamsin's plan for the large main space in the basement is exactly that.
08:29An entertaining stroke party room with a cinema snug at one end.
08:34I have a question about the cinema space and whether you actually see it as a separate room or if it's just a snug area within here.
08:41I kind of feel like it's more like just somewhere cosy to sit like a snug with a big screen.
08:49And I think it could be for us if we have a movie night, you know, with the kids or if they've got friends over and they're playing computer games or something like that, they can be out of our way.
09:01Yes.
09:02Or as they get older, they can get, you know, we can...
09:04Yeah.
09:05Even more reason to have the door at the top of the stairs.
09:07Yeah.
09:08You can catch.
09:09Yeah.
09:10I've never had a room the size of the basement that we've got here.
09:13It's huge.
09:15It's absolutely huge.
09:17Mine and John's first flat that we bought together was way smaller than that entire basement.
09:28Yeah.
09:29It's a great space.
09:32The other half of the basement, which is currently a garage, storeroom and toilet, Tamsin plans to split up into a guest bedroom, shower room and gym.
09:43And we're going to take away that bar and add a door, which will go straight through into the bathroom.
09:48And then you could have some doors out from either the gym or the guest bedroom because we're dropping the ground levels outside.
09:55Okay.
09:56My own gym.
09:57I have to use it.
09:58I know.
09:59That's the pressure now.
10:00So this is where we've got the Wow Island, is it?
10:01I suggest having a big entertaining bar down here.
10:02Down here.
10:03That's your food prep for barbecues.
10:04That's your kind of cocktail prep.
10:05That's the, you know, servery.
10:06Oh, John would love that.
10:07Once upon a time, before I met him, he used to be a barman when he was at uni. So he used to do all the flaring. It's like, oh, he's in his element. He'll be absolutely in his element.
10:28It also means that you can have bar seating. So it's a bit more social to be able to sit up at something.
10:35Yeah. Okay. I like that. And what's the other option for that?
10:38So the other option is more similar to where it is now, putting a sort of bar, double stack the bar there.
10:45So almost like a little kitchenette there. So you'd have a sink.
10:49Yeah. A sink.
10:50Yeah. You could have...
10:51It's more contained.
10:52...dress fridge underneath.
10:53Yeah.
10:54Tamsin's ideas for the basement were quite different. Took me a little while to come round to them. But actually, I quite like, I'm definitely coming round to the idea of having a big island down there.
11:06It will be the part of the house that everyone remembers and everyone talks about.
11:13The outside stairs up to the first floor balcony are another key consideration in this phase.
11:18So the concern is that if we put the stairs in that corner, we lose a bit of light. We can widen the other window to gain what we've lost from the staircase.
11:28That's a good idea.
11:29So you could have open tread risers, which would allow the light in. My personal point of view on this is I don't particularly ever like looking through a staircase.
11:38Yeah.
11:39So I would block it in and possibly have an outdoor store under the staircase.
11:43Right.
11:44And then just make the window bigger. And then you have a couple of steps up to the garden through that door and then widen the other window.
11:52Okay. I suppose I can live with that.
11:55It's really hard.
11:56To visualize.
11:57Yeah, yeah.
11:58On the plans, I'm still finding it quite hard to visualize it and thinking, oh, will it be enough?
12:03But I think you just have to trust the process, don't you?
12:06Yeah.
12:07Oh, so that's the rope you put there.
12:12Yeah.
12:13Earlier.
12:14So we're going to use this to demonstrate the angle of the stairs and how it works in this location.
12:19But actually, that's not too bad, because that is not taking up as much of the doorway below as I thought.
12:30That would be really good. Is there a particular gradient? Because that angle looks, I mean, it looks fine to me.
12:36But...
12:37Well, the gentler the slope, the easier the stairs are and the more likely you are to use them.
12:41Yeah.
12:42And there are regulations of how steep they could be.
12:44Okay.
12:45But this looks okay to you.
12:46This looks okay.
12:47The other decision that you'll have is just what the stairs are made of and whether they're solid or not.
12:52I definitely always maintained that we had to have stairs coming down to here and I actually think that's a much better option.
12:59This is the best place for the stairs without a shadow of a doubt, in my opinion. So thank you.
13:05Yeah.
13:07It's nice to have come out here with something you hadn't thought about before.
13:10Overall, I think Tamsyn's really listened to us. Her plans are fantastic. She's given us options. She's talked us through the pros and cons. And I think we're in a really good place now to make decisions.
13:27We're hanging out in the pool after school. Let's hope after our repairs, kids, in a week or two, this has water in. And you'll be floating on it eating ice cream.
13:52With a little help, John's re-grouted the pool, hoping that quick fix, costing a few hundred pounds in materials and man-hours, will save the time and expense of digging up the piping underneath the pool.
14:08Look how happy and excited you look!
14:10Don't try to look too excited, Albie.
14:13Jo, what are we going to do this morning?
14:15Start filling up the pool to see if the leak's still there.
14:19The only side problem, it's currently the only tap that Daddy can connect the hose to, is at the opposite end of the house.
14:29On the roof.
14:30On the roof terrace.
14:31So who's going to go down to the pool and receive the hose and who's going to be on the roof and setting the hose down?
14:36We'll go down.
14:38Me and Joy will go down.
14:40Pass it down.
14:41Come on, Albie, let's get the hose ready.
14:43No, don't turn it down yet, babe.
14:52So Joy and I are waiting down here.
14:55The boys are up on the roof.
14:57They're going to send us the hose down and we're going to put a little bit of water in it and see if it holds.
15:02Are you ready?
15:03We're ready.
15:04Do you want to come and catch the hose as it comes down?
15:09Why is it attached to a piece of string?
15:15Safety.
15:16All you have to do is untie the string.
15:18I can't reach it.
15:20The string needs to come much longer.
15:23Can I turn it on?
15:24No.
15:25Are you ready now?
15:30So, we are filling up the pool.
15:51The hose is coming from the rooftop.
15:54We're just going to put a little bit of water in there.
15:56I mean, at the moment, it's looking pretty murky and it's hard to tell whether it's going to hold water now that we've done a sort of small repair job to some of the obvious cracks that were there.
16:13But once we've filled it up a little bit, we'll mark it on the wall and see how quickly it goes down.
16:20So, test and the way, time to move on to a bit of a restoration project.
16:26We feel like it's important to keep some of the original elements of the house and so there was far too much metal work already in the house to rip it all off and replace it.
16:39So, finding Chris and repairing the metal work was important for us.
16:44And also, the metal work that was there is actually pretty good.
16:47So, really, some of it needs repairing and then there needs to be a bit made to fit on the end to sort of complete the wall.
16:55With the gates, window covers and the odd bit of fence, there's a few days of work for Chris there.
17:08But that will have to wait as a change of weather puts a hold on any outside work.
17:14Obviously, living in the Costa del Sol, we have so much sunshine for most of the year.
17:20Not today, unfortunately.
17:23Because we really, really want to try and be as green and as sustainable and as environmentally friendly as possible.
17:32I found someone that does solar panels and I thought that would be amazing.
17:38If we could get solar panels and power the house off of that and save money, then it kind of seems like a no-brainer.
17:46Hi, Karin.
17:47Hi.
17:48Come on in.
17:50Welcome to our building site.
17:52Nice to meet you.
17:53Nice to meet you.
17:55It sounds like it's raining even more.
17:57Hang on.
17:59It's absolutely pouring now, Karin.
18:01I don't know if you want to go out there.
18:03Have a little look at the neighbours.
18:06Ah, yeah.
18:07I see.
18:08Yeah.
18:09That roof terrace, we want to keep it usable.
18:11So, we have got a little bit of roof space above here.
18:16Yeah.
18:17So, yeah.
18:18You can put solar panels here.
18:19And I think you probably can fit around three solar panels here.
18:22But you probably need a lot more.
18:24At least around eight panels.
18:26Oh, really?
18:27So, we need to find more space.
18:29Space.
18:30But you could also here, if you still want to have this space usable.
18:34It's quite common also, you put a pergola and you can put solar on top of that.
18:38You can still use the terrace and you don't have to put the pergola on the whole terrace.
18:42The whole terrace.
18:43How long does it normally take until the panels can pay for themselves?
18:47In terms of your energy saving?
18:48It's like the payback time here is usually between three to five years.
18:52Really?
18:53So, it's quite good payoff.
18:54That's not bad, is it?
18:55No, it's really good.
18:56Can you give me an idea of costs or does it vary?
18:58It varies.
18:59It depends on how many panels and the labour cost, what kind of work we have to do to
19:05install the panels at your house.
19:07So, would you be able to drop me an email or something with quotes?
19:10Yeah.
19:11So, what I will do, I will summarise this and see different options and see where we actually
19:14will fit the panels and then I will summarise it and send a proposal to you.
19:18So, you will have it shortly.
19:19Thank you very much.
19:20That's brilliant.
19:21Okay.
19:22Let's head back down.
19:24I absolutely love the idea of being able to have green energy to power the whole house
19:30with solar energy.
19:34The thing is, because we have such a limited amount of roof space, it's not an easy process.
19:40You don't just say, yeah, bring the people around, they can install it straight away and
19:44we can get going.
19:46There's a whole process.
19:48So, we'd need to design the roof terrace, put in a pergola, finish that project first,
19:53before we can then do the solar panels.
19:56So, I do want to do it, but it's not going to be a quick thing.
20:08Jasmine and John have a few projects bubbling away and some seeds in the ground, but not
20:13much is really happening on site at the moment.
20:16It feels like it might be time for a bit of a shake-up.
20:19We have got so much work left to do and it's just impossible.
20:26no one could do this amount of work on their own in the timeframe that we've got because
20:31we want to try and get everything finished by the summer.
20:35So, Carlos has got some other jobs as well that he's committed to.
20:41So, we've come to a point where we're going to have to part ways.
20:56Really sad because Carlos has become part of the family really.
21:03I love Carlos.
21:04Genuinely, there's a little bit of my heart that he's a decent guy.
21:11But I don't think we'll get to the summer with our deadline with just Carlos and Marcin alone.
21:18Thank you very much.
21:21Thank you very much.
21:22Thank you very much.
21:23Thank you very much.
21:25Thank you very much.
21:26Thank you very much.
21:27It's a pleasure to meet you.
21:29We've met you very well.
21:31Don't cry!
21:36Bye, family.
21:43Why are you crying?
21:46I'm just crying at everything.
21:48Carlos has just been like part of the family hasn't he since we moved in since before we moved in
21:55So I'm just sad to see him go
21:58There'll be a big Carlos shaped hole in our lives, but it won't be forever. We'll definitely see him again
22:10He'll always be part of this house because he was here with us from the start
22:16but I think that
22:19We need a bit more help
22:23We need to drive this forward and get it done
22:27as quickly as possible
22:46It's been two and a half days since we put some water in the pool at the weekend with the kids
22:54and definitely not leaking water as quickly as it was before
22:58So I'm hoping that the water level that has gone down which is only a few millimeters
23:06it's just natural evaporation
23:10Time to give it a clean and get it ready to fill it right up
23:14Jazz is taking one for the team
23:18We don't have a net
23:19I don't know why we don't have a net
23:21Why don't we put on it?
23:22And so because that vent isn't on which you're also going to put on slightly
23:26Before we head into the test water, Jazz is having a little dip
23:30Obviously I can't go up with my dodgy leg
23:32Do you need to get a net?
23:40Bet you wish you were only cleaning the bathtub now
23:42Look you've just started there and you've got all that to go look
23:48The final stages of the pool cleaning slash trying to repair
23:54Taking a bit longer than we thought eh?
23:55With the pool project going swimmingly and having already said goodbye to Carlos
24:03The builder Jasmine and John had been working with pretty much since they got the keys
24:07The new guy is now on board and on site
24:10Jazz had sort of put the word out
24:13She'd spoken to a few of her former house hunters in this area
24:16And loads of people recommended this guy called Dominic
24:22Hello
24:22How are you?
24:23How are you?
24:24I'm good, you?
24:27You ready to make some noise?
24:30Absolutely, come on in
24:31Okay, thanks
24:36I'm Dominic, I'm a project manager here on the Costa del Sol
24:41I've lived in Spain 17 years
24:44I've spent a lot of that time working in Gibraltar
24:47And now I work within this area
24:50It's going to be a lovely property
24:52Plenty of work to be done inside and out
24:56Yeah, finished by the summer, I think so
24:59It doesn't worry me
25:00As long as everything lines up
25:02I think Dominic should stand a good chance of being able to get us to completing everything by the summer
25:10Because he's got more resources
25:12He's got more resources, you know, he's got more people available
25:15And it's a bigger company
25:17So fingers crossed we'll be able to get there
25:22While Dominic and his team get phase two underway
25:29Welder Chris is back and making great headway with the front gates
25:33And with all the protective gear and flashing lights
25:36Jasmine's keen to get involved
25:38Chris even has vegan rather than the usual leather gloves for her
25:41Right, I'm ready Chris
25:43Yeah
25:44Do you think I look protected enough?
25:46I think you look protected enough
25:48I think boiler suits are backing fashion on
25:49Yeah, yeah
25:50So what we're going to do is we need to weld on these tree foils
25:55Using the arc rod like this and bringing this like this
25:59Do you use any other material or it just melts the metal of the two pieces?
26:02So this rod is going to go smaller and smaller and smaller
26:08It'll take a couple of goes I think
26:10Practice
26:10Yeah
26:11How long have you been doing it?
26:13I've been a welder now for eight years
26:16I used to make wheelchairs
26:18Oh really?
26:18Yeah
26:19And I did
26:19I could have done with one of those just recently
26:21My husband broke his leg
26:23Shall we get some welding done then
26:24So you can get out of all the gear?
26:26Important is don't look at this without your helmet on
26:30Don't look at it
26:30It's basically when you're melting the metal
26:33It's like all of the bad stuff from the sun
26:34You're UVA and you're UVB
26:36Right
26:39Here so it gets over your head
26:42Yeah I've got a big head
26:43That's all right
26:44And then we tighten it up
26:45Jazz loves getting hands on
26:46She's very happy to get hands on
26:48I think she would do more of the renovation if she could
26:51So you're going to go start here
26:53Yeah
26:54You want to have it kind of angled a bit more that way
26:57And you want to kind of go like this motion
26:59I'm going to put you about here
27:01And then I'll kind of flick my mask down
27:02Because otherwise I can't see
27:03Okay
27:10Oh yeah it's quite tricky isn't it?
27:12Yeah that was all good
27:14That's good for the first time
27:16If I change it around and we can do another one
27:17That's good for the first time
27:26Yep and then come towards me
27:29Keep the shading
27:30Yeah that's it
27:31That's it
27:31That's it
27:31That's it
27:32Yep
27:32You can stop this
27:34Nice
27:35That's cool
27:36Woo
27:36That's really good
27:37I'm well impressed
27:38Once it's finished
27:40Let's just tap it off
27:43So I'll come back through with the grinder
27:45Make them all a bit stronger
27:47Ah you'll have to tell me which ones they are
27:49I'll put your ones at that end and at that end
27:52And then you know that they're your ones
27:53Those are my ones
27:54Yeah
27:54I'll tell everyone when they come to visit
27:56I'm holding those
27:57Yeah
27:57Thank you so much
27:58No worries
27:59I'll catch up with you in a bit
28:00See ya
28:01That was actually amazing
28:06Hopefully
28:08Those two that I did will always be there as part of my house
28:15With phase two of the renovation now in full swing
28:18Jasmine and the family are taking a well-earned break
28:23Hopping aboard a popular local form of transport
28:26To discover the native wildlife that's right on their doorstep
28:31Today we're going out on a boat trip from Estepona
28:36Really excited about it
28:38Oh yeah let's get on this boat
28:41We just decided to take a family day
28:43And go out on our own sort of mini version of a holiday
28:48Oh look there's a paddle board on the back of that boat Albie
28:51Oh should we have brought swimming things
28:54We've just sent Albion in as dolphin bait
28:57It feels like it's been a long time coming but it's amazing to finally be out and about
29:06And go and do family things again with a leg that is 90% working again
29:11Oh how nice is this
29:14Ah
29:14Albie's going to have a sleep
29:16I think there's a seat
29:19Looks like it
29:21Oh
29:21No
29:22Albie you're like the captain
29:24I'm not the best on boats
29:27I get quite bad sea sickness
29:31In fact I get all kinds of motion sickness which is terrible for someone who travels as much as I do
29:38I did my 10 meter swimming badge when I was about six or seven years old
29:44So I think I'll be all right if I do end up in the water
29:47I actually love swimming especially in the sea
29:50So who knows if we see some dolphins I might just jump in as well
29:54Although I forgot to bring my swimming costume
29:56Oh well I probably won't
29:59What's that smell?
30:00It's the smell of the sea
30:03Smells like Aston
30:04It smells like Aston
30:08Albie and mommy
30:10Albie and mommy
30:10Albie ready
30:13Come on keep your eyes peeled for dolphins Albie
30:27Yay
30:28So what you have to do Joy is keep an eye out
30:31on the horizon for any dolphin like movement
30:36Can you do your dolphin noise?
30:38My dolphin noise?
30:39Oh yeah
30:40Daddy's really good at a dolphin impression
30:42So you want me to try and call the dolphins?
30:44Yeah go on
30:45Communicate with them and tell them we're here
30:48Ready?
30:52I mean he's not going to call any dolphins
30:54I don't think they're going to hear you
30:55Now having lived by the sea for a while
31:06I recognise its amazing
31:09restorative power
31:12Oh there's a little sailing mode
31:14Yeah
31:15It is amazing and I do feel that being by the sea helps me in so many ways, helps me
31:25to relax, helps me to rejuvenate and definitely feels like my mental health benefits from
31:33being by the sea.
31:35I feel like I'm so small on this planet and all my problems are so small that it makes
31:44them seem easy to overcome.
31:48Oh, whoa!
31:50Fuck yourself there.
31:53Oh my God.
31:56Oh, life with you is always so much fun.
32:02Squeezing my leg.
32:05It's nice though, isn't it, being able to just do stuff like this any time.
32:11Amazing.
32:12Incredibly privileged.
32:14I was thinking that last night, how lucky we are amongst all the stress of the house.
32:23It is nice to have a little break from it, even though all the time that we're out here
32:30my thoughts are still keep jumping back to what's going on back home.
32:37It was potentially a great time for the family to escape the house as Dominic and one of his
32:47team, Liam, are getting stuck straight in and like builders generally do, kicking off with
32:52a bit of demolition.
32:53The bar in the corner is the only fixed structure in the main basement room.
33:04Once it's gone, they'll have one big open space to work with.
33:15Come on, dolphins.
33:16Keep your eyes out for them peeking up.
33:18Click, click, click, click, click, click.
33:22Now we're here.
33:23Help me, there's the light.
33:24Look, there, there, there, there.
33:25Wow.
33:26There, right.
33:27They're all floating around here.
33:28Watch.
33:29Around there, look.
33:30There, over there, look.
33:31There, there, there, there.
33:32You have a little flub of its tail.
33:33That one just keeps coming up over and over again.
33:50Oh my God.
33:51I saw its face.
33:52Wild dolphins.
33:55For me, growing up in Central London, it was never part of that.
34:00You know, my realms of possibility of life, but now it is.
34:07It's here, this side.
34:08Oh, no.
34:09Be careful.
34:10Slowly, slowly, slowly, slowly.
34:11Be careful.
34:12Wow.
34:13Oh, that's so cute.
34:15Oh, look there.
34:16I just saw one over there.
34:21The question is, how many did we see?
34:26How many different dolphins do you think there were?
34:29I think there's like four or three.
34:32Today's trip out on the boat was amazing.
34:36It was so calm.
34:38It was so tranquil.
34:39It was beautiful scenery.
34:41And we even had the amazing treat of being able to see dolphins in the wild, which, I mean, it was beautiful.
34:51I even cried.
34:52I cry at everything.
34:54That was amazing.
34:55What a great opportunity to spend the morning with the kids and with the family.
34:59I mean, this is partly the reason we moved to Spain.
35:02And when you do things like a boat trip, we can't escape.
35:05The kids can't escape.
35:06They have to spend the morning with us.
35:07And it was good.
35:08Everybody help me?
35:09Say dolphins.
35:10Dolphins!
35:11On another sun-drenched Costa del Sol day, Jasmine and John's new builder, Dominic, has already removed the old bar that stood in the basement.
35:24And is now looking at architect Tamsin's plan of adding a door to provide easy access to the bathroom.
35:42Hello.
35:43How's it going?
35:45I know you want a door here, but this was once under the ground or the subterranean part of the house.
35:54So this is that much concrete with reinforcing.
36:01Combs.
36:02Right.
36:03So we're essentially breaking into a bank.
36:06It was there, it was there.
36:08We're going to need to break into a bank, to be honest.
36:10That's over a foot.
36:11That's about a foot.
36:12Yeah, it's about a foot of concrete.
36:14Reinforced concrete.
36:15So no bricks.
36:17No bricks.
36:18Nothing.
36:19About three days, I guess, to cut through this.
36:22Are you kidding?
36:23We'll have to hire a bigger machine to take this down because if you had something like this or normal, it would burn out.
36:33We're talking a lot of horrible, nasty noise.
36:37Why is nothing ever straightforward?
36:39Is it just stuff?
36:40And this is only the start of it.
36:43Well, yes.
36:44It's a renovation.
36:45You know, if it was new, things have to work like they're meant to work.
36:49But in a renovation, things turn up.
36:52When you look at it on the architect's plans, coming from the swimming pool, let's say the kids are in there, one of them needs to go to the loo.
37:01They come round here and in a perfect world, they go straight through that door and into the bathroom, which is there.
37:07Or they come all the way down to that door, which doesn't seem that much further, but then you've got to come all the way back.
37:15So it's not just that distance, is it?
37:17It's that distance plus that distance.
37:18And everywhere will be wet.
37:19And everywhere will be wet.
37:20And every time we go in the pool, I'll be mopping this floor.
37:23So I don't know.
37:24I mean, that does throw a bit of a spanner in the works, doesn't it?
37:27All right.
37:28All right.
37:29Thanks, Dominic.
37:30We'll have to have a chat about it.
37:31I was going to say crack on, but don't crack on.
37:34All right.
37:35It seems like everything we try to do, you know, all these grand plans that we've got, something unexpected gets thrown up.
37:45And we then have to rethink because of costs, because of time, because of disruption, all the other implications and weigh everything up as in what's going to give us the best value and benefit to the work and the money we've got to put into it.
38:02It's tricky.
38:05Very tricky.
38:08With that one still up in the air, Jasmine shifts focus to another project that's been waiting for a fix.
38:15After meeting with Karin, she sent us a quote.
38:19The quote came back at around 7,000 euros for the solar panels.
38:24And obviously, we've only got a very small amount of actual roof space here where we could put the solar panels.
38:31She said we could fit three up there, but that wouldn't be enough.
38:35So we'd need to find space for another probably five or so more panels.
38:40And the suggestion was to put a pergola.
38:43And it would run from about halfway along here all the way over to around about the chimney.
38:48So it would take up quite a lot of space up here.
38:51And also building a pergola is not cheap.
38:54And I don't know if we can really come up with that right now.
38:58Karin's going to come back again and have another look to see if there's somewhere else around that we could put the extra panels.
39:05So then we'll be able to make a decision.
39:08I think if we could just go for the three panels and get as much electricity off of the solar panels as we can to contribute to the rest of the house, then it would be a no brainer.
39:19We'd do it straight away.
39:20While a decision on the solar panels might be a few days away, down in the basement rooms, it's time to crack on.
39:31The thing with having a really huge space is knowing how to arrange it to get the most out of it.
39:41So it's really important that you are clear in what you want each area to do and how you plan to use the space.
39:48Because otherwise, you know, things could just get a bit lost down there.
39:53And it seems three days to create easy access to the bathroom from the pool is not an option.
39:59I think for the amount of time, disruption, noise, dust, to just gain like a couple of metres, I don't think it's worth it.
40:11And as much as I think, you know, it was a great idea on Tamsin's design, in the end, it just wasn't practical.
40:18Maybe like a cupboard here. Basically, you want to have power in this cupboard.
40:30In the garage, tech mad John is keen to focus on power sockets.
40:35Apparently that's a symbol for a two-gang power socket, so the electrician knows where to put them.
40:44But it does look a bit like I've sprayed two boobs on the wall.
40:48Maybe I'll have to do a different side.
40:50They are so heavy!
41:00Oh, golden, Bennett!
41:03Jasmine's more focused on the big picture.
41:06And with two options for the kitchen area, a decision needs to be made.
41:10I love Tamsin's suggestion of having a huge, long kitchen island, which would be great for entertaining.
41:20The other option that Tamsin gave was a little kitchen in the corner, which would be quite functional and it wouldn't take up as much room.
41:29John thinks that it would be better to have a small kitchenette in the corner, because it's nearer to the back door, it's just going to be more functional.
41:38So, we're going for his option, because the basement is his domain.
41:45So, we're thinking sink there.
41:48Yeah, because of all the drainage and everything on the side of that wall.
41:51And then, so you'll have a metre or so here.
41:55Yeah.
41:56It's like your...
41:57Yeah, so if you're there, the kids can always come behind and pass a drink out of the window.
42:02Yeah, so there, basically.
42:10It's quite dinky now, I look at it.
42:12That's what they all say.
42:14From the start of one project to hopefully the end of another.
42:27It's been a lot of fun and games trying to get this pool filled.
42:32So, we're now just filling up the last bit and it's crunch time really, because the good news is after testing it with just a little bit of water,
42:42it seems like the repair that we've done on the pool means it's now holding water, which is great news.
42:55And I think that's probably saved us in the region of 15,000 to 20,000 euros, because that's probably what it would have cost if we had to dig up the entire pool.
43:08So, honestly, John and I were so happy, so excited when we realised it was holding water.
43:15And hopefully we can get it ready for swimming in soon.
43:19It's a momentous day. The pool is full and hopefully will remain full.
43:28Oh, Albie's going to be the first person into the pool.
43:32Admittedly, only ankle deep.
43:34How is it Albs?
43:37Is it refreshing?
43:41You're the first person in. How does it feel?
43:46You'll forever be the first person to get in the pool.
43:49It's quite chilly, but when you get a nice sunny day, it is very inviting to go in the pool.
43:57I quite like cold water swimming anyway, so I think it will be fine. Famous last words.
44:15Because it's xDemo, it's 50% off.
44:18It's one of the biggest decisions that we need to make.
44:22Having an interior designer to help with not only the design, but also the sourcing of the products is invaluable.
44:31Oh, what about that matter? That would look fantastic.
44:34We're making this look so... That's it, that's it.
44:37And then... Oh!
44:40There have been a few delays with tiling this floor.
44:43I feel like a house renovation requires a lot of wine.
44:46I tell you, there is never a dull moment here.
44:51What happened here.
44:52That's true how it creates this wall?
44:54That's it!
44:55That's true.
44:56That's true.
44:57And welcome, I guess so.
44:58How respond with...
45:00Thanks so much.
45:01Thank you very much.
45:02I want you here.
45:03It will help, and I'll give a sense of power that the깃 and the support,
45:05and the support of Rosetta Lund economy is great.
45:06And I kinda and recipient really the support of Rosetta Lund kind inchioолог.
45:08Thank you very much.
45:09That's great for us.
45:13objetos downtown and podios.
45:16Thank you to see your natural work.
