00:00The Amalfi Coast stretches for 30 miles along the southern coast of the Sorrentine Peninsula,
00:12in southern Italy.
00:15Like a beautiful necklace, this spectacular coastline sparkles with hillside vineyards,
00:21fragrant groves and a grand sweeping history.
00:30There are some places that are so famous and so legendary that even before you've set foot there, it feels familiar.
00:38The Amalfi Coast, with its road of a thousand bends, is one such place.
00:49The Amalfi Coast has attracted societies rich and beautiful for thousands of years
00:55and inspired some of the world's greatest artists and writers.
01:00The area's largest city, Amalfi, is a great place to begin this legendary journey.
01:08This town was wealthy and powerful during medieval times,
01:13and merchants here had gold coins to spend, instead of the barter system used throughout the rest of Italy.
01:21Visit the magnificent buildings that reflected early wealth, such as the Santa Maria Maggiore,
01:29and take the short trip to the picturesque hillside village of Pontone,
01:34where Amalfi's elite used to escape the crowds.
01:38Even though the fishing village of Atrani is only just over the hill,
01:44it maintains its own traditions, and even a local dialect.
01:48Atrani is the smallest municipality in southern Italy,
01:53and its medieval streets and alleys feel untouched by the hands of time.
02:02The nearby villages of Praiano and Furore have many beautiful beaches,
02:07including Fiordo di Furore, an ancient gorge that was used for many centuries as a hideout for bandits.
02:14A little further along is the site of one of the greatest legends of all time.
02:24Just off the coast from Positano is where, according to Greek mythology,
02:29Ulysses resisted the mythical call of the sirens.
02:33Positano is perhaps the best-known destination on the coast.
02:40A favorite of celebrities since the 1950s,
02:43this town glitters with old-world glamour.
02:53From Marina Grande Beach, most of the paths lead right to the town center,
02:58and the Santa Maria Assunta.
03:00Hikers come from all over the world to stroll through fragrant lemon orchards
03:07on trails with names like Gold's Pathway.
03:16Follow ancient trails to the hilltop town of Ravello,
03:20an elegant village known for the magnificent architecture of Villa Ruffolo,
03:25once the private home of a rich and powerful family.
03:30Visit the terraces of infinity at Villa Cimbrone.
03:36The famous American writer, Gore Vidal, called it the most beautiful view in the world.
03:47Before its medieval glory days, the Amalfi-coast charms drew the Roman aristocracy.
03:52And the tiny village of Minori was where society's elite spent their summer days.
04:04From Minori, the road leads to Maiori, a fishing town with one of the largest beaches on the entire coast.
04:11Dominated by the castle of San Nicola di Toro Plano, this is one of the last remnants of the area's powerful defense system.
04:24John Steinbeck once called the Amalfi Coast a dream place that isn't quite real when you're there,
04:34and beckoningly real after you have gone.
04:37With its endless sunshine, Mediterranean colors, and a landscape of gripping drama and breathtaking beauty.
04:47The Amalfi Coast truly is a legendary destination.
