00:00You know what a person loves to hear? You should smile more. I'm just kidding, everybody hates that.
00:07Target, however, didn't get the memo and wants its employees to spread some holiday cheer this year
00:12and they aren't taking ho-ho no for an answer. Bloomberg News first reported that the Minneapolis
00:17based big box store issued a directive mandating in-store workers smile and make eye contact and
00:23either greet or wave to any shopper that comes within 10 feet of them. If a customer is closer
00:29than four feet away, the employee must ask if they need help or how their day is going. And while
00:36the 10-4 program, as it's being called internally at Target, is being launched for this holiday season,
00:41it's really not that new in the world of retail. Walmart and Disney, for example, have had similar
00:46rules on the books for a long time. But this one feels oddly specific. It's not just when you walk
00:52in the door. Literally any time you're within 10 or 4 feet. Target's in-store sales have been
00:59sluggish, according to their latest earnings reports. And the current chief operating officer,
01:03who will be CEO as of February 1st, has said that improving customer experience is a top priority.
01:10Is this improving customer experience? I mean, truly, one of the reasons we online shop is to
01:15avoid interacting with other humans.
