00:00Behind-the-scenes stories from the Galaxy Far, Far Away's film and TV shows
00:04are littered with accidents, incidents, and misfortunes that had to be overcome
00:08in order to produce iconic scenes.
00:11Damaged equipment, injured actors, crazed fans.
00:15Star Wars has seen it all and is still going strong.
00:18And while you may already love some of these scenes,
00:21be prepared to view them in an entirely new light
00:24once you find out just how much stress they cause those working on them.
00:27Gareth here from WhatCultureStarWars and here are 10 more Star Wars scenes
00:31even more impressive when you know the truth.
00:34Number 10, A Rainstorm Almost Ruined Everything, A New Hope
00:38Tatooine, I could be the most important planet in all of Star Wars.
00:43It's the first planet we visit in the Skywalker saga and the final one.
00:47In the order in which they were made of course,
00:48otherwise we'd be sat here talking about Naboo.
00:51The surface of the twin sun desert world was mimicked here on Earth in Tunisia,
00:55a very dry country right next to the Sahara.
00:58Great thought George Lucas, what could possibly go wrong?
01:01Then the heavens opened.
01:03The shooting of the first scenes on Tatooine was significantly delayed
01:06because of an extremely rare rainstorm.
01:09Thankfully, Lucas did what he does best and ignored the obvious signs.
01:12He persisted and finally captured those iconic scenes on the Skywalker's homeworld.
01:17Number 9, Liam Neeson's wig was lost, The Phantom Menace.
01:21Much like the first film of the original trilogy,
01:23the first film of the prequel trilogy was also beset by weather-related issues.
01:28George Lucas stared down the gods once again when he returned to Tunisia
01:31to film the Tatooine sequences for this film.
01:34Not to be trifled with, the deity sent yet another warning to the director,
01:37this time in the form of a sandstorm.
01:40This huge phenomenon caused serious damage to several sets and props being used on the film,
01:45including the pod racers.
01:46This was a disaster as that scene is the best thing in the entire Phantom Menace.
01:51That and the duel of the fates, of course.
01:53Perhaps the greatest tragedy of all those suffered during the storm
01:56fell at the feet of Liam Neeson, or rather on the top of his head.
02:00The Qui-Gon Jinn actor lost his long brunette wig,
02:03robbing the Jedi of his iconic hairstyle.
02:06Thankfully, the hairpiece was replaced,
02:08and Qui-Gon could strut about on camera living his best flowy life.
02:12When the Star Wars team returned to Tunisia to shoot scenes for Attack of the Clones,
02:15things actually went off without a hitch.
02:17Which is a shame, because that meant we all had to sit through that terrible movie.
02:21Number 8. Grogu took four puppeteers to operate.
02:24The Mandalorian
02:25In the previous list on this topic, which you should definitely go and check out,
02:29we covered the fact that the galaxy's greatest slug, Jabba the Hutt,
02:32needed seven people to operate him.
02:34That's a lot of effort, but it does sort of make sense.
02:37The Jabba puppet was huge, with arms, a tail, and a head to control.
02:41So, pray tell why four different people were needed to work the minuscule Grogu puppet
02:46in the Disney Plus show, The Mandalorian.
02:48Grogu, also known as Baby Yoda to people who don't really like Star Wars, is tiny.
02:53Jabba probably has bowel movements larger than he is.
02:56Hell, I do.
02:57That is a lot of information I should not have just said.
02:59So, why were four people needed to bring him to life?
03:02Created by Legacy Effects,
03:04the Grogu puppet was relied on heavily during The Mandalorian,
03:07as the crew wanted to avoid CGI where possible.
03:10One person would be in charge of the critter's head and body,
03:13another its eyes, another its mouth, and another its arms.
03:17That is an insane amount of people working on a puppet the size of Mando's head.
03:21This makes practically any scene involving the little green fella more impressive,
03:25especially the ones where he is most active.
03:28Number 7, Ak-To was overrun with Puffins, The Last Jedi.
03:32Though it appears very briefly at the end of The Force Awakens,
03:35the planet of Ak-To is one of the main settings for The Last Jedi.
03:38You know, that film every Star Wars fan unanimously loves.
03:42It is the hiding spot of Luke Skywalker following the demise of his new Jedi Order
03:46at the hands of Kylo Ren.
03:48Rey tracks the master down there to try and recruit him to the Resistance.
03:51In his best grumpy old man voice, Luke says,
03:54No.
03:54In real life, Ak-To is the island of Skellig Michael off the southwest coast of Ireland.
03:59It's about 54 acres big, home to a medieval monastery,
04:03and became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996.
04:07It's also full of birds.
04:09The island is home to several species of seabird, including gannets, razorbills, and puffins.
04:14There were so many of that last one that it presented a massive headache for director Rian Johnson.
04:19He couldn't film around them, and it would take too long to digitally remove them.
04:23So he just decided to roll with it and put them in the film.
04:26And that's where Porgs came from, so now you know.
04:29Number 6, The Darth Vader Suit Was Intentionally Uncomfortable, Revenge of the Sith
04:33The scene in Revenge of the Sith where Anakin Skywalker first dons the famous black helmet
04:38might be more famous for its French dub.
04:42But it is the canonically first glimpse we get of Darth Vader.
04:45After Obi-Wan used the high ground to leave Anakin for dead on Mustafar,
04:49Palpatine rescues his new apprentice,
04:51and shoves his charred remains inside of a big Halloween costume.
04:54Said costume might look impressive on screen,
04:56but for actor Hayden Christensen it was the stuff of nightmares.
05:00In his infinite wisdom, Lucas made the Vader suit intentionally top-heavy.
05:05This was done so Christensen wouldn't feel comfortable in the suit,
05:08which would reflect Vader's adjustment period to his new exoskeleton.
05:12A good idea from an artistic point of view,
05:14but practically this was not the smartest decision.
05:17Poor Hayden must have hated trying to wobble around in a deliberately wonky costume on a dark set.
05:23No wonder Vader only gets up and walks around for a little bit in Revenge of the Sith,
05:26Christensen must have been exhausted.
05:28At least Lucas didn't try and take him back to Tunisia for this scene.
05:31That would have been the icing on the cake, wouldn't it?
05:33Number 5, Mark Hamill blew out a blood vessel, A New Hope.
05:37The trash compactor scene from A New Hope is one of the most iconic in the entire franchise.
05:42Luke Hahn and Leia attempting to overcome both the rapidly approaching walls,
05:46and the mysterious creature that dwells in the sewage water is classic stuff.
05:50Although in real life, one actor was facing a very different obstacle.
05:54Mark Hamill revealed on Twitter that he attempted to make Luke look as strangulated as possible
05:58to add to the realism of the scene.
06:01This backfired as he managed to pop a blood vessel in his eye.
06:04This was not in the script, obviously,
06:06so the crew had to film the side with Luke's good eye on it to cover for the injury.
06:10Worst of all, Lucas then told Hamill that his technique was pointless,
06:14as the lighting would have obscured it anyway.
06:16Oh, what do you like, George?
06:18Number 4, Chewbacca had anti-Bigfoot hunter protection, Return of the Jedi.
06:23Ah, Peter Mayhew, the gentle giant sadly passed away in 2019 from a heart attack,
06:29but not before giving the world numerous memories as the most famous man inside the Chewbacca costume.
06:34Mayhew's height, an eye-watering 7'3", made him the perfect candidate to portray the gigantic Wookiee.
06:40It also garnered him a lot of attention, sometimes from the wrong people.
06:43Filming for scenes in Return of the Jedi taking place on Endor,
06:47took place in the forests of North California, aka Bigfoot Country.
06:51Owing to his huge height and furry outfit,
06:54Mayhew was warned not to wander off set unsupervised,
06:57in case he was mistaken for a Sasquatch and shot at by hunters.
07:01In fact, Mayhew got a special escort in the form of people in orange vests,
07:05to alert people that he was not the missing link.
07:08Whilst this may sound ridiculous, put yourself in this position.
07:11You're wandering through the woods, lost and afraid.
07:13When all of a sudden you come across a giant hairy figure roaring in the middle of the woods.
07:18Don't tell me your brain wouldn't immediately jump to Bigfoot.
07:20Number 3, Fans Broke Into the Sarlacc Pit, Return of the Jedi
07:24Lovers of the series definitely embody the fanatical part of being a fan.
07:28Star Wars enthusiasts have long had a reputation for being amongst the nerdiest,
07:32more devoted followers of any franchise.
07:35This was exemplified during the filming of Return of the Jedi,
07:38when a group of devotees managed to get onto the set.
07:40Not just any set, mind you.
07:42The set of the battle between our heroes and the forces of Jabba the Hurt above the Sarlacc's lair.
07:47Don't you know what happens if you fall in there?
07:49Ask Boba Fett.
07:51Not put off by the idea of being digested,
07:53the fans not only managed to get past security,
07:56but also snapped a few pictures.
07:58Thankfully, this was in a pre-internet age,
08:00so the secret of the Sarlacc remained unshared.
08:03Breaking into anywhere is highly ill-advised.
08:06Breaking onto a movie set which is full of pyrotechnics, heavy equipment, and angry actors is even more so.
08:12Luckily, these irresponsible fans didn't do any harm,
08:15and didn't reveal any of the movie's spoilers.
08:18But imagine how differently things could have been if the release of Return of the Jedi
08:21was delayed because a few idiots wanted some cheeky snaps.
08:24Number 2, Pedro Pascal Injured His Face
08:27Right Before His Face Reveal, The Mandalorian
08:30The reveal of Din Djarin's face in The Mandalorian is one of the biggest moments of the entire show.
08:36They did it way more often than they should have, i.e. more than once,
08:39but it was still a cool moment to catch a glimpse of the visage hiding beneath that chromed helmet.
08:44The first, and what should have been the only time we see Mando's face,
08:47is during the 8th episode of Season 1,
08:49when the droid IG-11 removes his helmet to tend to his wounds.
08:53In a case of art mirroring life, actor Pedro Pascal had hurt himself for real right before this scene was filmed.
08:59The star himself said,
09:01I stepped out of the makeup trailer looking at my sides and walked into a piece of plywood.
09:06This faux pas cut open the bridge of his nose and required seven stitches.
09:10All this happened before they had filmed his big helmet removal scene.
09:14But as show creators Dave Filoni and Jon Favreau would later note,
09:17the legit injury actually worked for the scene,
09:20due to Mando being in fairly bad shape at that point.
09:22Lemons and lemonade and all that.
09:24Number 1, I Am Your Father Was A Huge Secret, The Empire Strikes Back
09:28Is it the most famous twist in movie history?
09:31If not, then it's up there, right?
09:33Like, top two, three, yeah.
09:35Vader dropping the F-bomb, the F stands for father,
09:38on Luke in The Empire Strikes Back,
09:40is the moment that launched Star Wars into the stratosphere,
09:43and is still the most famous line in the whole series.
09:46To protect this classic moment from leaking ahead of time,
09:49Lucas and Irving Kirshner went to some pretty extreme lengths.
09:52In the script, the line from Vader was actually changed to,
09:55Obi-Wan killed your father.
09:57And even Luke himself didn't know about the revelation
09:59until one day before the scene was shot.
10:01Mark Hamill got told the real line by Kirshner,
10:04and then had to keep it a secret both from his castmates and crew,
10:07not to mention the rest of the planet, for over a year.
10:10All this hard work paid off in the end,
10:12and the twist is still as shocking today as it ever was.
10:15The fact they couldn't tell the guy who played Darth Vader,
10:17David Prowse, his own biggest secret,
10:19will never not be funny, though.
10:21And that's our list.
