00:00Hey guys, I'm Lauren. Did you know that just like you and me, animals need to visit the doctor too?
00:07And sometimes, on special occasions, they'll even visit human doctors.
00:11I'm here at the Little Rock Zoo in Arkansas, and we're going to meet a young chimpanzee named Mikey.
00:16He's got a great story to tell. Let's go check it out.
00:19Hey Dr. Sarah, thanks so much for meeting with us today. Thanks for coming to the Little Rock Zoo, Lauren.
00:45Can you tell me a little bit more about Mikey's story here?
00:47Absolutely. Mike came to us in 2008. He was privately owned from an owner up in the northeast coast of the United States.
00:55So Mike came to us to join our chimp colony, and all of a sudden, he's in Arkansas,
01:00and he's exposed to all of these new allergies that he had never been exposed to before.
01:05I know what that's like.
01:06Yeah, so you know, your sinuses get all congested, and you've got tearing, and some nose running.
01:11Well, he had those same signs, but all of a sudden, he would start holding his hand over his eye,
01:17almost like as if he had a headache, and he would wrinkle his nose like there was an itch or something going on.
01:24And then all of a sudden, we saw this little pink thing coming out of his nose, and we said,
01:29What is that?
01:30Yeah, what?
01:30And so he would let us touch and feel, and it didn't seem to hurt, and it never bled or anything, but it was just there.
01:37And so finally, we said, Okay, it's time for us to go in and investigate.
01:41So tell me a little bit more about what you found when you went in to investigate.
01:45When we went back in January, we found that there was this pretty much golf ball-sized polyp
01:50extending from the back of his mouth all the way to the front and coming out of his nose.
01:55So we made this plan with Arkansas Children's Hospital.
01:57They said, We've seen this before in children.
01:59We can help you.
02:01And they came in in May, and we removed the polyp.
02:04We used a little drill to do it, and as soon as Mike woke up, we noticed that he was doing better.
02:09He was breathing better.
02:10He had more energy.
02:11He got in there and was able to remove the entire polyp, and it went very fast, and he did very well,
02:17and the recovery went fine.
02:18I think he's back to playing and doing what chimpanzees do.
02:22So after everything he's been through, how is Mikey doing now?
02:25Mike is doing fantastic.
02:27He has more energy.
02:28He's able to breathe normally so he can run around the yard and chase the other chimps
02:33and play with them and interact.
02:35He's not holding his head anymore, and he doesn't have this big pink thing hanging out of his nose.
02:40What an amazing story.
02:41It really is, and we just want to thank the Arkansas Children's Hospital
02:45and the Keeper staff here at the Little Rock Zoo for coming together and really helping Mike out.
02:51And now everybody can see Mikey here at the Little Rock Zoo.
02:54Exactly.
02:55Now thanks so much for taking the time to talk to us.
02:57Thanks for coming here and visiting us.
03:03We'll see you next time.
