00:00Some people, bila mereka pergi, especially to a Western country, they want to assimilate, kan?
00:05They want to assimilate, they want to be more Western, they melupakan, they punya, you know, how they speak.
00:11Macam, kita orang Melayu pun sama dengan orang India, kita makan dengan tangan, kan?
00:15Kalau kita makan nasi, kan? I still do that, you know?
00:18Hi, Assalamualaikum, kembali lagi dalam Inspira Sinona Podcast.
00:31Hari ni kita bersama dengan seorang ratu cantik, bekas ratu cantik Malaysia, Kristina Celaya.
00:37Hi, cantik. Dengan berbaju tradisi, baju kebaya.
00:43Yeah, kebaya. Yes. Actually, just yang baju sajalah dalam, I pakai dress modern.
00:51Mungkin ada simbolik, ada colour white and black.
00:54Yaka, but my shoe saya merah.
00:57Oh, yeah. Tapi mungkin represent you sebagai peguam?
01:01Oh my God, I tak fikir pun macam tu.
01:03I pula macam, oh, ada kena-mengena mungkin?
01:06Yelah, bila saya buat chimbering dulu, dalam long, long time lah.
01:11Kalau saya cakap, then you will know umur saya.
01:15Bila buat 9 months itu, chimbering, kan? Kena pakai black and white lah.
01:18Oh, it's a month lah.
01:20So, I didn't even think about it until you mention.
01:23Mungkin you dah terlalu terbiasa dengan orang.
01:24Ah, yelah.
01:26Okay, first of all, kita nak tanya dulu.
01:28Introduce a bit about yourself.
01:30Yes, of course. So, my name is Kristina Celaya.
01:32I am a Malaysian citizen, obviously, of Indian ethnicity.
01:36I was born and raised in, actually, born in University Hospital.
01:41So, considered Selengor. PJ, but I always say KL girl.
01:45I finished all my education dekat sini.
01:48So, primary school dekat Sekolah Jalan Selengor.
01:50Secondary school, I went to Sekolah Menanggar Kebangsaan Taman Petaling.
01:54DP, they call it monkey school.
01:56It's about the monyet-monyet dekat hutan semua.
01:58Sometimes, they come into the class lah.
02:00I still, that day, my parents, we were driving, we passed by.
02:03And then, they say, you remember the monkeys used to come into your class?
02:05I said, oh my god, I forgot.
02:07So, lepas high school, I did my A-levels to one and a half years.
02:13Lepas itu, I did my law degree.
02:15So, my law degree is with LLB from University of London.
02:20So, my training, saya buat dekat Zain & Co.
02:24So, Zain & Co. is Malaysia's first non-colonial firm.
02:31So, we are very proud of that lah.
02:34The firm is, I think, established in 1971.
02:38So, I bought my cimberin kat sana.
02:40It's a full-service firm.
02:41So, all the departments.
02:43So, ada litigation, civil, criminal, corporate, commercial, conveyancing.
02:49Syariah department pun ada.
02:50So, obviously, saya tak, I didn't qualify as syariah lah.
02:54Tapi, sometimes, kalau ada like macam divorce settlement ke wills ke apa
02:59and then, they need another lawyer to sign.
03:01I pernah sign untuk syariah matters.
03:03Tapi, saya boleh represent lah.
03:05Oh, saya boleh lah.
03:06Saya boleh lah.
03:07So, I practice dekat Malaysia for how many years?
03:13Slightly over five years.
03:15From 2008 sampai 2013.
03:18Sebelum saya pergi ke Amerika.
03:20Okay, so, your mom dulu, your mom and your parents bekerja sebab apa?
03:25My mom, dia kerja dengan Malaysian Airlines.
03:29Bukan Pramogari lah.
03:30Tapi, dia ground staff.
03:32She, a different department lah over the years.
03:35She was with MAS, I think, I think 32 years lah dekat kerja dengan MAS.
03:40So, are you married?
03:41Am I married?
03:42Yes.
03:44Sudah 9 tahun kahwin.
03:46Sometimes, I feel like, oh my God, so fast lah.
03:50Pejam-celelit, pejam-celelit dah 9 tahun dah.
03:52Yalah, yalah.
03:53Okay, tak apa.
03:54Kita tunggu dulu untuk soalan perkahwinan.
03:56Aichi, menang tahu dulu mengenai, you pernah first run it up Miss Universe Malaysia 2002.
04:05Macam mana boleh termasuk dalam bidang beauty pageant?
04:07So, I think, bila saya kecil lagi, I think, because sebab my family is very musically inclined.
04:15So, my grandfather, Dato' saya, dia, how do I say minister, dia pastor tau.
04:20Dia minister, paderi, paderi in the Lutheran Church dekat Malaysia.
04:25And he was one of the pioneer pastors.
04:28And my grandfather was also, dia composer, composer music kan.
04:32So, he wrote his own songs dalam kita punya bahasa lah, bahasa Tamil kan.
04:36Because when I was younger, I was always exposed to music.
04:40Because my grandfather was a composer.
04:42And then, we, kita semua, like, every Sunday, we are singing, we are in the choir.
04:47I pun belajar main organ kan.
04:51And then, performing was always my, part of my blood.
04:55Like, bila, sometimes I'm shy.
04:57But kalau you suruh I pergi pentas, tak shy.
04:59If I'm going to dance or sing, tak shy.
05:02So, pageantry, this is something to answer your question.
05:05It's very unique because I, there's no one in my family.
05:08Memang tak ada, like, tak ada, tak ada, tak ada president langsung.
05:11But I always was interested in it, you know.
05:15And then, the first pageant I took part was state level.
05:172001, I masuk Miss Pahang.
05:20That one, I top five lah.
05:22And it's actually pretty good because I have no training, tak pernah pergi catwalk, nothing.
05:27It's just raw, raw, natural.
05:29How old are you?
05:30That time, I was 18.
05:31Just habis form five kan.
05:33I just baru dapat lesson memandu juga, right.
05:36So, I suka too.
05:37And then, I feel like, you know, some people, there's divided opinions kan, tentang pageantry, right.
05:42Like, especially the time that I took part,
05:45masih, at that time, still ada divided opinion tentang pageantry.
05:49That, eh, this one is like, very superficial tentang, you know, outer beauty saja kan.
05:55Tapi, what I learn about pageantry is that it really gives you an opportunity to learn about yourself, you know.
06:02Because the things that you consider macam weakness kan, you boleh berbaiki toh, right.
06:08and you learn how, you learn confidence.
06:09Because you learn how to project yourself.
06:11Yes.
06:12And you're not there to compete with other people, but you're there to just become a better version of yourself kan.
06:16So, for me, pageantry, I feel, has open doors.
06:20But then, it also comes with a, how, macam mana nak cakap lah.
06:24Sekarang, sometimes if people know that you're a queen,
06:26they will also think that it's because you have that,
06:29that you tak kisah tentang benda lain kah?
06:31That you don't care about education or career, things like that kan.
06:35Sekarang, I'm in a good place because I have done both.
06:39So, bila saya ada career yang serious, then orang will take you, people will take you seriously lah.
06:44Tapi, orang yang cuburi bidang pageantry ni,
06:47kalau mereka masuk bidang entertainment,
06:49kalau buat lakonan actress, kapa,
06:52then, sometimes they are not taken seriously, right.
06:55So, yeah.
06:57So, masa you masuk, memang tak ada dapat tentangan daripada your family?
07:02At first, at first, my dad is a little bit traditional.
07:05He wasn't too sure about it.
07:07But then, the rest of my family cakap dengan dia
07:10and, you know, said this is actually a good thing.
07:12And then, then he was okay lah.
07:13By being first runner-up of Miss Universe,
07:16I dapat title Miss Malaysia of my own juga.
07:19So, they gave me a title of Miss Tourism World Malaysia,
07:23which is another international pageant, Miss Tourism World.
07:26It's run by John Singh in the UK.
07:30The Miss Great Britain organisation runs the Miss Tourism World pageant.
07:34tapi, towards the end,
07:36bila saya was, I was supposed to almost leave for the pageant,
07:40I don't know what happened lah.
07:41It was, that time, there were things going on.
07:43There were bombings happening in,
07:45in, I think, Iraq, Iran.
07:47And it was next to Turkey.
07:48And then, I don't know,
07:50the organisers said they couldn't send me
07:51because of political reasons.
07:53I don't know,
07:54I don't know how true that is.
07:55But, it was very disappointing masa itu
07:57because I felt like,
07:59ayah, I tak pergi,
08:00I was one step away into pergi Miss Universe kan,
08:02tapi tak dapat one step.
08:04So, so close, you know.
08:06Then, I said, takpelah.
08:06I got this other title.
08:07I can go to, to Turkey and represent Malaysia.
08:10And, I was really preparing.
08:11I was learning some Turkish.
08:13I was really preparing, you know.
08:14and then, tak jadi, you know.
08:16Then, I, at that time, I was like,
08:18okay, my reign pun almost sudah habiskan.
08:20And then, I was like,
08:21should I take part again ke?
08:23Should I just let it be kan?
08:25But, at that time,
08:26I was already in law school
08:27and I was finishing my first year.
08:29Then, I spoke to my parents
08:31and my dad said,
08:32if you go and do all this again,
08:34you will put your studies on hold.
08:36So, then, I focused on finishing my law degree.
08:40And then, after that,
08:41I also did part-time modelling lah
08:42while I'm in law school lah.
08:43and then, after that,
08:45bila saya sudah habiskan
08:46and I bought bar,
08:48Malaysian bar,
08:48then bought chimber ring,
08:49masa tu, memang tak ada masa lah.
08:51Memang tak ada masa at all
08:53untuk fikir buat benda lain kan?
08:55So, five years,
08:56I couldn't do anything, right?
08:57And then, after I went to New York,
09:00you know, I, at that time,
09:02you know, my husband sekarang,
09:03at that time, boyfriend lah,
09:05I discussed with him lah
09:06and I said, how lah?
09:07What do you think?
09:08Should I cuba ke mencuba
09:10bidang ini one more time
09:11sebab I'm in New York, you know?
09:13I saw that there was another international pageant.
09:17At that time,
09:17Malaysia didn't have the franchise lagi lah.
09:20That means, here,
09:20they weren't having a non-national competition.
09:23So, I went in as an independent candidate
09:25to represent Malaysia.
09:27Miss Global.
09:28Sekarang, kita sudah ada
09:29organiser dekat sini.
09:31Tapi, 2014, memang tak ada organiser.
09:33So, I represented Malaysia for that.
09:35The pageant was in Mexico
09:38and Los Angeles.
09:39I was,
09:40I got into the top seven
09:41and I won the Miss Enterprise
09:44subsidiary title.
09:46So, what I'm trying to say is
09:47the 12 years ago,
09:49what I, before that,
09:50what I couldn't do,
09:51which is to go overseas
09:52and represent Malaysia.
09:53I got to take that box lah.
09:56I, I dapat represent Malaysia.
09:58So, even though it was
09:59a smaller international pageant,
10:01but it was fulfilling to me
10:03is about I really wanted to do that
10:04and then I,
10:05I rasa macam dia rampas dari saya.
10:07I don't know for what reason.
10:08Okay, masa you represent Malaysia kan
10:10dalam Ratu Shanti Malaysia,
10:12you the only Indian girl.
10:14For my time?
10:14Yes.
10:15Ah, yes, yes.
10:17Okay lah,
10:17ini sensitif punya topik.
10:19So, that time lah,
10:22during the 90s,
10:24I think Era Fazira
10:26was Miss Malaysia,
10:27I think 1994 kan.
10:28That time,
10:29Malay girls masih boleh
10:30take part kan.
10:31And then I think
10:32in the late 90s
10:33was when they changed the rules
10:35and then Malay girls
10:35cannot take part anymore, right.
10:37So, during that time,
10:39it was mainly,
10:41pageantry was the industry lah,
10:43was mainly a lot of Chinese.
10:45kan.
10:45So, bila saya took part
10:46that time,
10:47I was the only Indian
10:48finally.
10:49Actually, only non-Chinese lah
10:50for my year kan.
10:53And the year before also,
10:54there was only one Indian girl.
10:56So, I think like
10:56getting first run up
10:57is macam menang lah.
10:58So, masa tu susah.
11:00In fact,
11:00I jumpa dengan
11:02kawan-kawan lain,
11:02they said,
11:03wow, you are very berani lah
11:04because you masuk
11:05industry yang memang
11:07at that time lah
11:08not suitable for you
11:10because it's hard
11:11for you to enter
11:12tapi not only did you enter
11:13but you macam menang lah.
11:15and then also,
11:17I won the main subsidiary title
11:19during my year
11:20for Miss Universe
11:21which is Miss Body Beautiful.
11:23I think,
11:23I think actually I was
11:24I saw the video.
11:25Oh, you did?
11:26I think I was actually
11:28the first Indian
11:28dalam Malaysian pageantry lah
11:31to win that title lah.
11:32Dari pertandingan yang you masuk,
11:35pertandingan ratu cantik tu,
11:37apa the best lesson
11:39yang you belajar,
11:40pengajaran yang paling berharga
11:41yang you sampai sekarang
11:42masih lagi
11:43amalkan?
11:45kalau you masuk pageantry,
11:47modeling,
11:48nampak macam superficial kan?
11:50Tapi saya sahaja yang tahu
11:51how much doing all this,
11:54tolong saya dalam
11:55bidang,
11:57bidang utama saya lah
11:59which is law.
12:00Kan?
12:00Sebab
12:00presentation,
12:02cara you duduk,
12:03cara you cakap,
12:05cara boleh buat makeup,
12:07you know?
12:07Ada banyak orang
12:08go into professional careers
12:09tapi mereka tak tahu
12:10present themselves.
12:12You know,
12:12it's like grooming lah.
12:14Grooming, betul.
12:15Easy sebenarnya
12:16you nak terpilih sebagai
12:17finalist untuk
12:19ratu cantik kan?
12:21Because you kena
12:21ada confidence.
12:22Yes.
12:23Appearance you kena jaga.
12:24Betul lah,
12:25macam cara you cakap.
12:26Semua tu you practicekan
12:27sampai sekarang,
12:28you dah jadi lawyer kan?
12:29Yes.
12:30Semua tu berguna
12:31sampai sekarang.
12:32Oh, for life.
12:33For the rest of your life.
12:35Tapi kenapa you pilih
12:36bidang law?
12:37Probably
12:38umur dua belas
12:39bila saya
12:40for the first time
12:42maybe
12:43cakap out loud
12:44that I think
12:45I want to be a lawyer.
12:46Two things lah.
12:47Saya suka cakap banyak.
12:49I like to talk a lot.
12:51And I am
12:51a very curious person.
12:53Saya selalu
12:54tanya soalan.
12:55Like if you ask
12:56my family
12:56like my uncles
12:57and aunts semua
12:58when I was young
12:59I was quite annoying
13:00sebab mereka tak boleh
13:01like watch something
13:02because I keep
13:04asking questions.
13:05Why is this?
13:05Why is that?
13:06Kenapa?
13:06Like I
13:06tak boleh sit still.
13:08You know,
13:08I always
13:09I'm curious.
13:10And then
13:11I have a very good memory.
13:13I have a photographic memory.
13:15Like I didn't realise it
13:16until I was older.
13:17Tapi I boleh ingat macam
13:18sekarang you ask me
13:20about something
13:20oh 20 years ago
13:21like I was like
13:22I boleh ingat
13:22apa saya pakai juga.
13:24Oh.
13:24You know.
13:25So then
13:25the competition of that
13:26made me realise that
13:28eh I think
13:29I think this is my profession.
13:30The funny thing is
13:31like macam
13:32family saya
13:32ada banyak
13:33like masuk
13:34muzik
13:34semua kan
13:35tapi untuk
13:36badan
13:37law
13:38tak ada apa-apa
13:39I was the first one.
13:40So in my family
13:41I'm actually the first person
13:42to go into
13:43two different industries.
13:44One is
13:44pageantry
13:45and modelling
13:46the other one
13:47is law.
13:47I memang
13:48both pun
13:48first time.
13:50You antara yang
13:51apa macam
13:52orang panggil
13:52pecah tradisi
13:54lah.
13:54Pecah tradisi
13:55lah.
13:55Betul.
13:56Tapi
13:56dapat the support.
13:58Dapat the support
13:59of my family
14:00which is usually
14:00Indian family
14:01sometimes the more
14:02traditional ones
14:03tak sukalah
14:04bidang yang
14:05you know
14:06all that kan.
14:07Tapi my family
14:07is you know
14:08we are Christians
14:08and they are a bit
14:10more open-minded
14:11and just
14:12very progressive
14:14in the thinking.
14:15Okay.
14:16Sepanjang you
14:17dah jadi lawyer
14:17dekat luar negara
14:19kan.
14:19Dekat Malaysia
14:20or
14:21Malaysia sendiri.
14:23You ada
14:24kendalikan tak
14:25kes-kes yang
14:26melibatkan wanita
14:27yang
14:28yang
14:29bagi you
14:30memberi kesan lah
14:31yang membantu
14:32banyak wanita.
14:33So
14:33I was
14:35I tak buat
14:36litigation kan.
14:37So bila saya
14:38dekat Malaysia
14:39I was with
14:40Zain & Co
14:40I was an
14:42M&A lawyer.
14:43So mergers and
14:44acquisitions.
14:45I was a corporate
14:45lawyer kan.
14:47Tapi bila
14:47chambering
14:48I pernah buat lah
14:49one or two
14:50like pro bono
14:51punya cases.
14:53I
14:53for my legal aid
14:54I buat
14:55dog brief kan.
14:56So represent
14:57people yang
14:57tak ada lawyer
14:58untuk sentencing
15:00mitigation
15:01or sentencing.
15:02Tapi
15:02personality
15:03I selalu
15:04untuk
15:04sesuai
15:05untuk
15:05corporate lah
15:06I feel
15:06and then even
15:07the firm pun
15:07retained me
15:08buat corporate kan.
15:09Tapi
15:09my boss
15:11the head of
15:11the corporate
15:12department
15:12dia
15:13buat a lot
15:14pro bono
15:14stuff.
15:15So kita
15:16buat
15:17bukan
15:18any wanita
15:19tapi I
15:19we have
15:21established
15:21a few
15:21foundations.
15:22I work
15:22for a few
15:23foundations
15:23with her.
15:24So macam
15:24apa nama tu
15:26Yayasan
15:26Tuanku
15:27Nozahira
15:27I think
15:28our former
15:28pemaisuri kan
15:30dia yang
15:30buat
15:31songkit tu
15:31kita punya
15:34firm yang
15:35established
15:36itu foundation.
15:37So I was
15:38involved in
15:38setting up
15:39the foundation
15:39and then
15:40kita
15:41also
15:41legal counsel
15:42dengan
15:43company
15:43secretary lah.
