Toss Tim: Muhammad Azhar uddin and Alec Stewart 2nd Test at Chennai, Feb 1993
Transcript
00:00Well, this was a toss just a short while ago, Alex Stewart calling for the first time in a test match,
00:04and I can tell you he's lost it. India have won the toss, and India will bat, and Henry's with the two captains.
00:10Asana, you're making a habit of winning the toss.
00:12Yeah, I've won quite a few tosses in my life.
00:15Now, this is a crucial test match. England have got to win this to get back in the series.
00:19Do you feel you're going to be able to stop them?
00:21That's right, you know, it looks a very good wicket, you know, we've got to make sure that we go out for a,
00:25I mean, we're going out in a positive manner. It's no going back, no looking back, drawing this match or something like that.
00:31You just have to be positive whenever you play.
00:34And so you won the toss. What do you hope for as a good score in this first inning?
00:37Yeah, I would really, 400 would be a very good score in this wicket.
00:40As a well done with the toss. Many congratulations. Thank you very much.
00:43Thanks very much. Thank you.
00:44Thank you. All the best.
00:47And now to a man who finds himself in a very unexpected role, Alex Stewart.
00:51Your first test, well, the cost didn't go too well.
00:53No, no, not the best start, but there you are.
00:55Now tell me, when did you hear that you were going to be captain today?
00:58About 20 minutes ago.
00:59Graham wasn't feeling so well. He was up all night and decided, let's say, about 20 minutes ago.
01:03And has this had any effect on team morale, or has it made them a little bit tougher?
01:06No. He's got to fight even harder, you know, so he didn't play that well in the first test.
01:10We'll be looking to correct that.
01:12And are you now a bit relieved that you will get rid of the wicket-keeping gloves?
01:15Richard Blakey will have them.
01:16Yeah, Richard, he's kept well in the last game and batted well, so he'll do well.
01:20It's the first game, but now I'm happy just to open.
01:23But now, this really is a crunch test match for England.
01:25You've got to win this to get back into the series.
01:27Are you confident, Oving?
01:28You have to be.
01:29Yes, no point going into a game otherwise.
01:31No, we're confident and we'll play well and hopefully better than we did in the first test.
01:34Alex, well done and the very best of good luck.
01:36Thanks very much.
01:37These, then, the teams for the second test match, and first of all, India, who were unchanged from Calcutta.
01:43They resisted the temptation to bring the Seema Srinath in and stuck with their spinning trio that had done so nobly in Calcutta for them.
01:50England did make changes.
01:51They had to, of course, with Gooch out.
01:53Stuart, captain, so Richard Blakey came in for his first test match to keep wicket.
01:58And Philip Tufnel, the left arm spinner who's had so many problems on the tour, was recalled.
02:03And Philip Tufnel, the left arm spinner who's called.
