00:00Every serious incident on the road requires forensic examination.
00:07We've got to start asking the question, why is this happening?
00:10Pedestrian's been struck in the cold off area of the steel carriageway.
00:14The car is filled for stop.
00:16And inside the cordons, dedicated officers take on this challenge.
00:20Clearly, I don't think this came out of the factory sounding like that.
00:25This person's lost their life for whatever reason.
00:28We're here trying to establish why.
00:34Only now can I realise that that is actually in the middle of my lane.
00:38Tracking down the evidence.
00:40This is really important, this is key.
00:41To get to the truce.
00:43Once we've got somebody, that's going to put him in the driver's seat.
00:46There's a death on the road.
00:48So we've got to be investigating properly and thoroughly.
00:51This is a proper head scratcher, this is.
00:54All in a day's work for the crash detectives.
00:58Hello ambulance.
00:59I don't know if you're aware of it, but we've got an RTC.
01:02Any casualties at all?
01:04One is unconscious in the near, but we haven't got an update on at the moment.
01:10If we need everything literally where it is now, alright, so I need to be fit as a scene.
01:16Yeah.
01:17So, is the driver's critical?
01:18They say there's critical life care.
01:19Passenger there, severe injuries but not as critical.
01:20Okay.
01:21As medics at the scene of this crash treat two seriously injured men.
01:22Is there anything in there that says who it is?
01:23Officers are now trying to find out who they are.
01:25Nothing in pockets or anything, anything?
01:26Is there anything?
01:27Is there anything?
01:28Is there anything in there that says who it is?
01:29Is there anything in there that says who it is?
01:30Is there anything in there that says who it is?
01:31The person on the left side.
01:32Oh, okay.
01:35Yes, I know we haven't seen him rundio.
01:41Yep, so it was something that he should be off with, but even solidly.
01:43crash treat two seriously injured men officers are now trying to find out who
01:50they are and people living nearby describe being first on scene
02:03woke me up and saw someone's crash outside and I can smell the I'll see the petrol then I've seen the
02:10gentlemen I'll see I didn't see the sky until you come closer because it's no street lights
02:16as you can see it's the motorcycle has actually collided with the pillar and gate and the extended
02:39stonewall of our section absolutely decimated it
02:46the motorcycles approach a junction coming up to a give way line
03:13so assuming at the moment that there's a rider and a pillion passenger
03:18the two are deemed life-threatening injuries
03:21don't know whether they thought they're going to make the bend or
03:25the junction but yeah definitely some lock-up mark there
03:29so obviously the rider's reacting using the brake emergency braking seems to have lifted off here
03:38that mark goes right through to that grass on the curb
03:45the wheel has picked up the grass and has ground it across this drop curb
03:52and then we've got some grindings going in
03:57while these marks show the path the bike has taken the damage reveals more
04:04looking at the bike you can see the actual forks and the wheel has been pushed back
04:11the fork should be out that way they've actually been pushed to that angle oh yeah the alloys gone there so that the impact has gone straight down through the bike
04:25the bike if it was a side impact or they went in on the side you did they would be skewed out but everything's just been
04:33being pushed back right down through the line of the motorcycle
04:37and this is building a picture of exactly how it struck the wall
04:44well he's gone at the post
04:47because of the metallic marks
04:50so you've got like the handlebar and you've got the levers
04:55which i would have said
04:58cause these marks
05:00the handlebar has it that height
05:04as the bike is coming in
05:06the rider hasn't slid the bike or the bike has dropped
05:10the bike is still in upright position
05:19if the rider or the pillion pass just slides across the road surface then you'll get abrasive marks on their clothing
05:25you'll get fibers in the macro structure of the road surface
05:30but i can't see anything so again it's indicating to me that
05:34as the bike has collided with the wall it's stood up
05:37it is still upright
05:38on its two wheels
05:40with both rider and pillion passenger
05:42still on the bike
05:47that's the width of that wall
05:51you know that's a good foot and a half wide that wall stone
05:55it's going to stop something in this track which is done
05:58while there's clear evidence of the rider braking
06:05components of his bike are also telling a story
06:08all the debris from the motorcycle
06:12just concentrated just stayed here
06:15and then you've got damage on the tank
06:19that'll be done by the rider's body
06:22and you can see the friction marks here with the rubber
06:26and the leather, the black marks
06:33and Richie suspects he was also accelerating into the impact
06:37rev counter is snapped off
06:42the needle is stuck there
06:44it's in the red on 12 and a half thousand revs
06:47as a result of the collision the rider then actually
06:52turns the throttle on
06:54the wheel lifts
06:55so there's no resistance on the wheel
06:57so that's when you get a big high rev
06:59which explains how the man on the rear of the bike
07:04has been so badly injured
07:05the back wheel of the bike will lift
07:09so it's almost projecting the pillion passenger
07:12and evidently his blood there
07:14so I'm assuming that they're thrown over that way
07:16the man wasn't wearing a helmet
07:22nor any protective clothing
07:24but it's a different story for the rider himself
07:32they've got some element of protective clothing on
07:38I can't see a helmet at the moment
07:41but sometimes if the helmet was worn
07:44normally that goes with the casualty in the ambulance
07:48you can indicate to the consultant
07:49maybe that's where the damage
07:52or that's where the injury would be
07:53you know on the head
08:08see the time of this collision when he was reported to us
08:14it was eight minutes past one in the morning
08:16so at the time it's hours of darkness
08:18it's now what 20 past five
08:22and it's starting to get light
08:24five, six
08:30seven
08:32potentially that is
08:38where the pillion passenger come to rest
08:49clothing left here
08:50is thought to belong to the man
08:52who was riding the bike
08:57that's the rider's shoe
09:00but how can he be so sure?
09:03so you've got the white markings on there
09:08so that, the shoe will be around that area
09:11you've got the rub mark on there
09:19on the shoe you've got those
09:20you've got the square blocks
09:21if you measure them up
09:24there we are, this could be fit
09:28so this shoulder here would create that rub mark there
09:32and as daylight brings a clearer view of the scene
09:40oh dear
09:42oh dear
09:44it's also revealed some more hidden damage
09:47the brake fluid, the brake reservoir
09:58has become detached from the handlebars
10:01and lost its fluid as it's bouncing across the road surface
10:05as it's been projected to here
10:07the fluid has just covered the Mazda
10:12all over the paint work
10:14the brake fluid is quite corrosive
10:17so it's going to damage the paint work
10:19that's for sure
10:20and also maybe the soft top
10:21not good
10:24as evidence is captured with a 3D laser scanner
10:39Ritchie's now using the data
10:45to create a virtual version of the crash scene
10:48there's a clear and obstructed view there
10:51to the right of the junction
10:55you know it's an open view that way
10:58quite clearly see it's quite an open junction
11:02you know being a local person as well
11:03you know they should know the area
11:07so if the rider is familiar with the junction
11:10why has his journey ended in this way?
11:14it transpired throughout the inquiry
11:16that CCTV became available from a camera
11:20facing down towards the road the motorcycle was travelling
11:24as you can see it's night time
11:26we've got some illumination there from the street lights
11:29you can see the lit road
11:32the point of impact where the motorcycle has lost control
11:34and then collided with the wall
11:36is at this area here
11:40what you do see is the flood of light from the motorcycle's headlight
11:44come from the right behind the hedgerow
11:47that's where the motorcycle has collided with the wall
11:56we can't really see much on there then what has happened to the riders because of the darkness
12:04there's no attempt to stop
12:08no steer deviation
12:11there's no deceleration in the bike that is slowing down or anything
12:15the actual reaction of the brake then coming on
12:21and the wheels starting to lock up
12:23is very very late
12:24it's a matter of several metres
12:26and you know it's all too late then
12:29a Yamaha R1 is a powerful motorcycle
12:33it's one of those bikes that you can reach a high speed
12:36very very quickly
12:37whilst just going up probably through the first, second, third gears
12:42there's the view looking back down
12:45it's quite an open road
12:47there's plenty of opportunity there for a motorcyclist to open up the bike
12:52to attain a speed that is far too fast for that road
12:57lead it into the junction ahead
13:02although we can't use this to calculate an accurate speed
13:05in my experience watching this on the CCTV
13:08you know certainly the motorcycle is not travelling at 30 miles an hour
13:12but it's what can't be seen in the footage that also adds to this inquiry
13:18what we can say is that it was that vehicle on the road
13:22there were no other vehicles at that moment in time
13:24this is solely down to the rider and the pillion passenger
13:28there's no other parties involved
13:29so was it just speed that caused the bike to lose control?
13:37we know that evening that the rider of the motorcycle and the passenger
13:44they've both been out drinking
13:45the rider being the owner of the motorcycle
13:48he'd only just purchased that bike very recently
13:50the 36 year old rider was found to be almost twice the drink drive limit
13:57he'd also taken cocaine and ketamine
14:01he hasn't got a permitted license to ride it
14:04and also therefore he's an inexperienced rider
14:07not used to giving lifts or having a pillion passenger on the back of the motorcycle
14:12consuming alcohol, drugs, then getting on a powerful sports motorcycle
14:19you know for the pillion passenger to jump on the back and with no helmet
14:25you know that could have gone easily the wrong way
14:29the two men were treated for life threatening injuries
14:33they both survived the crash
14:35you know they could have been two deaths there at the scene
14:40they are extremely lucky people
14:44the rider was charged with drink and drug driving
14:50as well as using the bike without a license or insurance
14:54but the case was discontinued as a prosecution was no longer considered in the public interest
15:01when peace thank you one caller what's your emergency
15:12there's been a car accident and the car has completely smashed a bit
15:17it is controlled
15:19for the people in it must be hurt
15:21perhaps the city is not being told to be powered
15:25what injuries is this update?
15:27we've got a Citroen C3
15:29we've got a Citroen C3
15:30we've got a Citroen C3
15:31let's hit the stationary vehicle
15:32there's a female trapped in the Citroen passenger
15:36she, well, condition wise
15:41they've just said it's time critical at the moment
15:47this crash has happened on a 50 mile an hour stretch of road
15:51close to the M48 motorway
15:54and now air ambulance doctors
15:59are treating a seriously injured 32 year old woman
16:08Alpha 1 6 and Alpha 1 off at sea
16:14she's still in there, she?
16:15she's out but she's
16:17they decided whether they were going to take her by road or by air
16:19but I think they're going to go with road
16:21right
16:24obviously everything's still going on with the fire service
16:26and the casualty's still at scene
16:27so that's the priority
16:29for us, it's assessing the scene
16:31seeing what we've got
16:33we've got to start asking the question
16:34why is this happening?
16:36the man driving the Citroen
16:39has escaped uninjured
16:41he's been arrested
16:43and now faces questions
16:45but the injured woman
16:47had to be cut free from the wreckage
16:50it's the roof
16:54it's the roof
16:55hmm
16:57fire service have cut it off
16:59but it's interesting to see where the
17:02the damage is on the roof line
17:04that's the front right above the windscreen
17:06and the crew can explain more
17:12didn't run into that
17:13that's alright
17:14they took the roof off
17:15it was cut high
17:16high
17:17there
17:18so you can see it was there
17:19and there
17:20obviously they've cut the pillars
17:21but
17:22peeled back as far
17:23yeah
17:24alright
17:27the B post
17:28was completely severed
17:29yeah
17:30that was done
17:31prior to Askenya
17:32for the accident
17:33the B post on the near side
17:34severed
17:35so the B pillar is the middle one
17:41by there
17:42it's one of the most structural parts of the vehicle
17:47so
17:48that being ripped off
17:50it's quite significant
17:52the woman who was sitting here
17:56is now on her way to hospital
17:59her seatbelt's being ripped out
18:02and as they continue to find evidence
18:04of the huge forces involved in this crash
18:07so the airbags have deployed
18:09Bob has been joined by colleague Richie
18:13look at that
18:15you think how strong that is
18:18oh yeah
18:19it's just been folded
18:21folded
18:35but could other parts of the car
18:37reveal even more about the impact
18:41that's the front door is it
18:42ah right
18:45watch yourself
18:46alright
18:48that's just ripped
18:50look at that
18:52look at that
19:00yeah
19:04you know that's your wing mirror basically
19:06you would have the frame
19:08which is obviously all this
19:10it's all gnarled and squashed and pushed
19:13and forced
19:14to the rear of the vehicle
19:16this is the
19:17this part here would be the
19:19the end of the door
19:20obviously the
19:21the frame that contains the glass
19:23the actual
19:24glass of the passenger door
19:26and then between the doors
19:28then inside internally in the vehicle
19:30you would have
19:31the B pillar
19:34you know the point of a vehicle
19:36you've got your A pillar and your B pillar
19:37is the strength of the car
19:39and you know if the car rolls
19:40these are supposed to stop the roof coming
19:42compressing in
19:43you know to give that cabin protection
19:47I've never seen something like that happen
19:49in terms of the B pillar being pulled away from the chassis of the car
19:54I bet it was a hell of a noise when that happened
19:56poor
19:57but to understand how the impact damage was caused
20:08focus now turns to this lorry
20:13which is parked in the lay-by
20:17I mean it's gone a fair way under
20:24if you look where the bumper is
20:27I mean that's how far the vehicle's gone underneath
20:29there's not a lot of room under there is it
20:35and that vehicle's managed to get under there
20:41there's clear evidence of where the vehicles have made contact
20:45but analysis of the damage
20:47reveals more about the movement of the car
20:49during the collision
20:51the vehicle's gone into the
20:53under the truck that way
20:54so the marks are lateral
20:55so they're almost running parallel with the vehicle
20:57so indicating that when the vehicle is then
21:00entered underneath the truck
21:02it's probably almost in line with it
21:04it's not coming in at an angle
21:07can't go any further because of the wheel
21:11but then when it's exited
21:13it's actually exited at an angle
21:15so it's come back out rebounded
21:16which is that mark there
21:23take some bending as well wouldn't it?
21:27see all the markings going down
21:34the actual vehicle coming together with the truck itself
21:39is all on the passenger side
21:40is highly concentrated here
21:45the corner of the truck has actually intruded inside the vehicle
21:51even though the airbag's gone off
21:53and I think something of that magnitude
21:55an airbag is not really going to help I don't think
21:57it's quite horrific actually
21:58it's scratching and stuff through here
22:12but it's scratching everywhere in this leeway
22:15but is there anything on the road surface
22:18to reveal the drivers actions in the lead up to the crash?
22:23there's no sign of emergency braking
22:25I think if he knew what he was doing
22:28it'd be more of a reaction than that wouldn't it?
22:31so can they make sense of the few marks that they have found?
22:36that's the back wheel coming in then isn't it?
22:40that's got to be where it's getting crushed underneath
22:42it's just compressing
22:44you've got those gouges there haven't you?
22:45yeah
22:46they go that way aren't they?
22:47yeah
22:54as it's coming in
22:56and then starts to rotate
22:57that's the rear near side
22:58compressing
22:59and then it gets to that point
23:01and then
23:02whoosh
23:03he was in here was he?
23:04yeah
23:05you think he's on his break?
23:06it's like he's minding his own business really?
23:07I mean he's
23:08he's close to the curb
23:09he's not out in the carriageway
23:10he's doing everything legal isn't he?
23:11yeah
23:12would this be recorded?
23:13is he one on the other side?
23:14but this lorry could deliver some valuable evidence
23:16but this lorry could deliver some valuable evidence
23:21would there be a rear camera?
23:22it's got to be isn't it?
23:23it's got a rear camera on you as well
23:27we're looking at this camera thinking
23:28if that's recording then that would have captured everything
23:32that's our golden ticket really
23:34the vehicle is parked up
23:35the driver is sat in the cab
23:36and
23:37almost out of nowhere
23:38the vehicle is parked up
23:39the driver is sat in the cab
23:40and
23:41almost out of nowhere he's felt a collision on his vehicle
23:47calls him the vehicle to move, shake
24:02it's a fair little bound to shunt it forward
24:05yeah
24:06that's our golden ticket really
24:07that's our golden ticket really
24:09the vehicle is parked up
24:12the driver is sat in the cab
24:14and
24:15almost out of nowhere he's felt a collision on his vehicle
24:16Yeah.
24:22That's looking back down the vehicle on each.
24:23Back down it, but it should be the opposite.
24:26Inverted, yeah, the other way round.
24:30If you look at the rear view.
24:41You could see that it was just a slight drift of the vehicle
24:44into the lay-by.
24:48The significant damage to the car
24:51was concentrated on the passenger side.
24:56As the car disappears from view...
24:59And then I play.
25:02..it's picked up by another camera.
25:11See, the airbag's gone off, driver's airbag.
25:13The leading edge of the roof line has started to deform
25:17and also the bonnet is starting to lift.
25:19And then it kind of hooks it in, doesn't it?
25:22And now it's starting to rotate.
25:28The tyre comes off the rim, doesn't it?
25:31It's literally compressed as much as it can be there, isn't it?
25:34And then...
25:34And reforms.
25:35And then reforms.
25:36And they still need to know more about the actions of the driver.
25:49So there's no marks at the scene to suggest the vehicle's breaking,
25:52but what we can do is look at the brake light bulbs.
25:57Any distortion to the filament of tungsten light bulbs
26:00can show if they were on at the time of a crash.
26:05As seen in examples here from a previous investigation.
26:10So that's a normal filament,
26:13and that's a filament that's been on.
26:17The filament gets really hot when it's illuminated,
26:20becomes ductile,
26:21and then the shock of the impact
26:23causes it to stretch and retract.
26:29We examined the brake lights of the Citroen.
26:33There was no deformation in the filament.
26:37Which indicated to us that the brake lights
26:39were not activated at the time of the collision.
26:43So if the driver wasn't braking,
26:46did he react in any way?
26:48We quite clearly see it as a man driving.
26:53Was his hand on the bottom of the wheel?
26:54Yeah, his hand's on the bottom, isn't it?
26:58If your hands are on the steering wheel,
27:00you're going to steer first
27:02before your foot comes off the throttle
27:04to hit the brake pedal.
27:07Just as the vehicle's connected,
27:09you could see,
27:10just looking at the hand movement on the driver,
27:13that his right hand is pulled down.
27:16There's a slight deviation back out,
27:18but the very, very last
27:20kind of couple of milliseconds, really.
27:26You know, this input here,
27:29out to the back, out to the road,
27:31if this hadn't happened,
27:33it would have gone straight through here.
27:35Yes.
27:36Straight through where she sat.
27:37She's centimetres away from taking the full brunt
27:44of that impact into the rear of the truck.
27:46That doesn't really bear thinking about.
27:50The driver said he'd taken his eyes off the road
