Zohran Mamdani won the New York City mayoral election, defeating independent candidate and former governor Andrew Cuomo. Mamdani, a democratic socialist, becomes NYC’s first Muslim and South Asian-born mayor. His campaign focused on free childcare, free bus transport, and a rent freeze for over a million New Yorkers. Democrats also celebrated victories in New Jersey and Virginia governor races, and California voters approved Proposition 50, redrawing congressional maps to benefit Democrats in future elections.
