Analysts are calling it nothing short of a political earthquake. Democrats have swept the first major elections of Donald Trump’s second term, flipping key states and winning by margins not seen in decades. From New Jersey to Virginia and beyond, experts say voters sent a clear message — rejecting Trump’s influence and rewarding Democrats’ focus on affordability, safety, and local leadership.

00:00it's a democratic landslide there's no other way to characterize this it's a big margin nearly a
00:27landslide margin in new jersey it is a landslide margin in virginia and the margin was so large that
00:36abigail spanberger was able to carry in her lieutenant governor candidate and even her scandal
00:41tarred candidate for attorney general that most people had thought would probably lose in the end
00:47he's won by four or five points you all chose leadership that will focus relentlessly
00:56on what matters most lowering costs keeping our communities safe and strengthening our economy
01:04for every virginian but it's even better than that for democrats they got they've already hit 60 out
01:13of 100 seats in the house of delegates they were at 51. this is the biggest margin they've had in
01:18decades and then the democrats won the two public service commissioner seats in georgia they kept
01:26they retained the three supreme court seats in pennsylvania you look around the country even at
01:34smaller races in cities and counties and you can see that democrats are just doing well everywhere
01:41i know your struggles i know your hopes i know your dreams so serving you is worth any tough fight i have
01:50to take on and i am incredibly honored to be your next governor
01:56and you know i think also cheryl also ran a largely uh you know campaign that was uh maybe not 100 fully
02:07but pretty close to fully anti-trump and a lot of his policies and tried to pin the policies of the
02:13the last 11 months uh as affecting new jersey voters whereas you know her opponent chattarelli was 100
02:19uh you know with trump and endorsement it was trying to place blame for the economic policies or the
02:25economic state of the of new jersey excuse me uh on the policies of the democratic governors right and
02:31state-based policies and that doesn't seem to have been a winning strategy for him in the end
02:36you know you expect a party to win places where they have a plurality or majority of the electorate
02:44when the other parties in control of the white house but not by this margin so there's a tremendous
02:50signal here for republicans they won't get it unless donald trump gives them permission to get it
03:01and look there are lots of reasons for it affordability and all the other issues they
03:05were discussing but the number one number two and number three reason donald j trump
03:22in the last nine months trump has done more controversial some would say outrageous things
03:29than any president in american history including donald trump
03:331.0 this has a cumulative effect
03:46to that is yeah mom donnie uh would have a hard time winning in most places in the united states
03:51and that's where uh uh cheryl in new jersey governor-elect cheryl and governor-elect spandberger
03:58in virginia come in they're moderates so the parties are smart enough to run people in states and
04:05localities and congressional districts that can actually win those those places and reflect the
04:11values of those places um so mom donnie will be the face of the democratic party if democrats don't
04:18fight that that's what republicans intend to do and yet over the last 12 months
04:23i think the the word that i keep hearing and that is coming out a lot of the exit polls and other
04:43surveys that i'm hearing is affordability being a major issue uh for democrats and that obviously encompasses
04:48the economy but this but it also encompasses things you know like specifically like health
04:53care uh and housing affordability and so this uh you know seeing some survey data coming out that that
05:00affordability in the economy more generally seem to be number one priorities are the the biggest issue
05:05for voters in this cycle yeah in new york city uh we have in terms of the sheer volume of voters the
05:12sheer number the most since at least 1969 so in new york city over two million votes uh have been cast
05:19at least according to current count and so what that is as a turnout percentage i'm not exactly sure at
05:24this point in time but in terms of the number of votes we haven't seen this in a long long time in new
05:28york city which like mom donnie was able to uh win over voters in new york city uh largely based on a
05:36message related to affordability and wanting to work to make the city a better place in other words a
05:42really locally based message uh to start off a campaign and one he stuck with throughout the
05:48campaign that created a lot of enthusiasm especially it seems to be the case among younger voters
05:54and i look forward to seeing you all and working together once again to make sure that we effectuate
05:58the kind of change we so desperately need here in this state that we also love so very very much
06:03guys thank you thank you thank you and thank you for republicans if they dare if they have the
06:11courage if they can find the courage they need to counteract donald trump's more outrageous actions
06:17they they have to insist that he think about the people on the ballot next november because he clearly
06:24didn't uh this november he can't do everything he wants to do he can't post everything he wants to post
06:32on truth social there have to be some breaks and if they can't install the brakes they need to get ready
06:39for another disaster next year and i'm i'm so excited we got this party started a little earlier than expected
06:58on the democratic side they will make a mistake if they think that they've learned everything they need
07:04to learn from these scattered elections uh in this off off year they learned some lessons but they need
07:11to apply these lessons individually and differently to each state uh to each district to each locality
07:18and if they do that and they find those younger more charismatic candidates they're going to have a lot more
07:23victories
