Geopolitics take centre stage at Euronews' Enlargement Summit

00:00Geopolitics took center stage at Euronews Enlargement Summit in Brussels on Tuesday,

00:07with leaders from candidate countries framing their ambition to join the European Union.

00:12I see enlargement as much more than just the enlargement.

00:16It is really the possibility for making our European Union stronger, as you have said.

00:23It is the possibility that if we do it right,

00:27do finally unification of Europe.

00:30Ukraine has chosen to be the EU member through the similar feeling of life,

00:36freedom, democracy, humanity, respect to the human rights,

00:43just respect to a human, to his or her choice.

00:46So, with Montenegro, European Union is going to prove its very name,

00:50is going to prove its concept, is going to prove its values,

00:53and is going to prove its geopolitical status.

00:55Moldova wants to continue to be a democratic country,

00:59wants to be part of the free world.

01:02And, of course, because of the security threats that we have been experiencing,

01:06because of the hybrid war that we have been experiencing,

01:10especially since Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

01:13We received first positive report for starting negotiations in 2009, together with Croatia.

01:22And, unfortunately, we are in the same place where we were 25 years ago.

01:28We will take it in a very serious and responsible way.

01:31All the remarks, all the demands from EU partners, and considering it,

01:40will change our attitudes and our stances on different issues,

01:45and will improve our behavior in the future, and we hope that European Union will notice it.

01:51We have opened five of six clusters within only 11 months, which is an absolute record in terms of speed.

02:03It's something that, until only a few years ago, I would not have been able to imagine.

02:10But this is why life is so beautiful.

02:15Thank you very much.

02:16Despite mounting frustrations on both sides with the enlargement process,

02:20the leader's main message was clear.

02:22Expanding the Union is no longer a matter of choice, but of necessity.

02:27It's definitely clear.
