The signs of a hypocrite are three:
When he speaks, he lies;
when he makes a promise, he breaks it;
and when he is entrusted, he betrays the trust.”
(Sahih Bukhari, Hadith 33)

💫 Explanation (Tafseer in English):

This hadith beautifully and powerfully defines hypocrisy — not in faith alone, but also in behavior.
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ warned that a true believer should be recognized by honesty, loyalty, and trustworthiness.

Let’s reflect on each sign:

1️⃣ When he speaks, he lies —
A hypocrite uses words not to build truth, but to manipulate. Lying destroys credibility and distances one from Allah’s mercy.

2️⃣ When he promises, he breaks it —
Reliability is a mark of faith. A person who constantly breaks promises cannot be trusted in worldly or spiritual matters.

3️⃣ When he is trusted, he betrays the trust —
Trust (Amanah) is sacred in Islam. When a person misuses or violates trust, it’s a sign their heart lacks sincerity and fear of Allah.

🕊️ These three traits show that hypocrisy is not only about belief — it’s about character.
A believer strives to purify his actions from these habits daily, seeking Allah’s pleasure through truth, loyalty, and trust.
