00:00No, no, no, no, no, no, no.
00:30A disturbing video from just four days earlier surfaces, hinting at a terrifying truth that will change everything.
00:38Do you think he was going to show you?
00:42On February 2nd, 2023, Kootenay deputies arrive at the scene and are met by a devastated husband, Daniel Howard, right outside the house.
00:52He's not only the 911 caller, but also someone deputies already know as a former police officer.
01:00Over here, come on.
01:04Over here.
01:06Where's she at?
01:09Upstairs in the bathroom.
01:11She's upstairs in the bathroom?
01:13With Dan out of the way, the police enter the house.
01:16What they're going to discover inside will chill them to the bone.
01:21Get gloves?
01:23No problem.
01:26She's in the bathroom.
01:27Send in medical.
01:37Got that?
01:38Yep.
01:39No heartbeat.
01:41So no heartbeat, no nothing.
01:43Secure the scene.
01:44Don't touch anything.
01:44Lying naked in the half-filled bathtub is 48-year-old Kendi Howard's body.
01:50Detectives immediately notice something odd for such a brutish death.
01:53The water is far less bloody than expected.
01:57But what's most unsettling is that the spent casing is discovered resting between her legs.
02:02Do we give him, this is a different case.
02:09So given the circumstances of him and emotions and things like that, do we want to tell him?
02:16I don't think medical.
02:17The medical is on the show, Dan?
02:18I don't think so.
02:19Do we want to tell him or do we want to wait?
02:22No.
02:22Okay.
02:23I got it.
02:24Actually, you know what?
02:24You haven't done one.
02:25Shortly after, the police speak with Dan again, confirming the worst news that he's not prepared
02:33for.
02:35Hey Dan, I'm Deputy Wheeler.
02:39I'm sorry to inform you, but your wife is past her.
02:44They begin to examine the scene and search the house, as well as prepare for the questioning
02:55of Dan, who has been sobbing uncontrollably.
02:58Hey Dan, is there anyone that we can call for you?
03:19Is there anyone we can call to give you some support or anything like that?
03:32Any family?
03:35Dan, I know this is hard, but when is the last time that you saw your wife alive?
03:44I know this is tough.
03:45I don't know.
03:49How long ago, can you recall?
03:53What time is it?
03:54Did you call 911 when you heard the gunshot?
03:58No.
03:59Okay.
04:00I didn't.
04:01Oh, no.
04:04Well, help us out with the time frame, all right?
04:06I didn't think it was a gunshot.
04:08I was downstairs.
04:09TV going.
04:11It sounded like something hit the floor or something.
04:13I don't know.
04:15When was the last time you saw your wife before she went to go take a bath?
04:19Hour and a half.
04:22Hour and a half.
04:22Hour and a half.
04:23Hour and a half or something.
04:25I don't know.
04:26I really don't know.
04:27I'm out of it.
04:28It's about 11.15.
04:33Maybe 9.30.
04:349.30 or so?
04:35I think.
04:36Okay.
04:37The longer investigators stay, the more the house gives up its secrets.
04:48Unsettling truths surface one after another, all pointing to something deeply disturbing
04:53about this entire setup.
04:56Once Dan was more in control of his emotions, detectives began questioning.
05:00I got my condolences.
05:02This is a bad night.
05:03I don't wish on anybody.
05:06So, what was going on tonight?
05:09I had marital problems.
05:11Mm-hmm.
05:12And, uh, I wanted to, uh, finalize, uh, like, is this, uh, divorce has already been decided
05:28or is it, uh, it's, uh, it's open for discussion?
05:35About her.
05:35Or, uh, she wants the divorce one day, she doesn't the next.
05:41And then, once she realized that all assets are going to be split, well, she didn't feel
05:46the truth yet.
05:47Dan states that he and Kendi had argued last night about a house he's trying to buy.
05:53The disagreement escalated to the point that Kendi retired to her room for her nightly
05:57bath, leaving the conversation unfinished and never to return.
06:01I heard something hit the floor right now.
06:03And so, I like a shot.
06:06I didn't think it was a shot.
06:09And, uh, standard watching TV, drank a beer, well, I guess I lost track of time.
06:16And I'll have to tell you, you've been at this job long enough.
06:20You know as well as we do.
06:22So, I'm gonna, I'm gonna plan on asking.
06:27Did you shoot your life?
06:29No.
06:30This conversation is gonna be over if we keep this line up.
06:33You know we gotta ask the question.
06:35So, I've been dealing with this rollercoaster emotional thing.
06:40So are you?
06:41I wish I'd know.
06:42This is bad.
06:43Even though Dan looks extremely distraught at the loss of Kendi, there's a lot more to
06:49the story than meets the eye.
06:50To begin with, Dan is an ex-cop, but still failed to recognize the sound of a gunshot.
06:56What makes it more twisted is the fact that just four days earlier, officers had been
07:02called to this very house.
07:04Kendi shared a secret with the deputy that now makes her death even harder to accept as
07:09I'd...
07:10On that evening, four days ago, Kendi had called her parents to say that something was very
07:29wrong at home.
07:30Central dispatch, this is...
07:33Yes.
07:34I had a call from my daughter, Kendi Howard.
07:38She called in a panic.
07:40And she was there getting a divorce, and it didn't sound very good out there.
07:44Tell me exactly what happened.
07:46We was in bed, and my wife just got a phone call from my...
07:49From a...
07:49And they're all at each other.
07:51I got a call from a friend that she called them, and she's in a panic, and been hung up.
07:56And I've been trying to call her, and she won't ask, and...
07:59Are you at that location now?
08:01No, I'm not.
08:03Okay.
08:04And I got a call from a friend.
08:06Were there any weapons involved?
08:07Um, I don't know if he has weapons.
08:09Just called her friend.
08:10It was in a panic, and then...
08:11And then the phone hung up.
08:13Oh.
08:14Give me a second.
08:15Just call me.
08:16Hello?
08:17Hello?
08:17That's it?
08:18That's it?
08:20Yes.
08:20It comes around the way.
08:21Yeah.
08:22Is that okay?
08:23Yeah.
08:24Okay.
08:25Stay on the line with your dad.
08:27In case she's calling me, she's in a pen.
08:29She has to dance stick.
08:31That's a sign.
08:32She needs help.
08:33When deputies reached there, there was a stark difference between Kendi's petrified
08:37demeanor and the dominant air Dan displayed.
08:41No strange words were spoken yet, but soon, this was to become a visit that the deputy would
08:47not forget.
08:48You must be Mr. Howard?
08:50Yes.
08:51Daniel?
08:52Yep.
08:52Do you go by Mr. Howard or Daniel?
08:54Yeah.
08:54Or Dan, I guess.
08:55All right.
08:57Do you mind if we talk to you guys really quick?
08:58Sounds fine, yeah.
08:59All right.
09:00I just, can I get a thing and then I'm going to hang so I can get it going?
09:04Yeah.
09:05Do you mind if I fire you?
09:07It's just a safety thing.
09:08I just don't know where you're going at all.
09:11In Kennedy, correct?
09:13Kennedy.
09:13If this visit to Kendi's house was creepy at first, it was only going to become downright
09:18disturbing as Kendi began to show signs of absolute terror.
09:22So your friend and or mom is kind of concerned about you.
09:27I'm not sure who called us is all, but what's going on today?
09:32I'm just going to force him.
09:33I'm just calling him.
09:34I can't do it.
09:35Okay.
09:37I can't do it.
09:38I can't do it.
09:39I can't do it.
09:41Okay.
09:41What did you mean by you can't tell me what he was going to do?
09:46I just want to help him.
09:48I just want to.
09:49Okay.
09:50All right.
09:51Well, we're here to help, but we need to make sure.
09:54Thank you.
09:54I can see that.
09:56I just want to.
09:57I want to.
09:58I want him.
09:59I get that, but when your safety is in question, it's not causing problems.
10:05It's protecting yourself, right?
10:06Kendi was too scared to share what had terrified her.
10:09But the deputy kept trying so that he could take stronger action against Dan, if needed.
10:16All right.
10:17I know what I see.
10:18I know what he was going to do.
10:19What do you think he was going to do?
10:22I just want to.
10:24I just want to.
10:25I know, man, but I'd like to know what you think he was going to do because it helps me
10:29out, too, right?
10:30To see which direction I need to go.
10:34And who knows, it might help him out, too.
10:37I don't want to.
10:38Do you think he was going to?
10:39He hurt himself?
10:41No.
10:41I mean.
10:43Do you think he was going to kill you?
10:47No.
10:48Okay.
10:55And why do you think that now?
10:58Yes.
10:59But the cop continued to press her until she broke her silence.
11:04Kendi shared with the officer that shortly after asking for a divorce from Dan, she woke
11:08up to find him right beside her with a pillow, black gloves in his hands, and a look in his
11:13eyes that she would never forget.
11:15Kendi was escorted by the deputies to her parents' house that night.
11:31There was no clear scope for a mandatory arrest, so the deputy decided to confront Dan head
11:37on.
11:38She mentioned she thought she saw you standing over her when she woke up.
11:42You were just standing right beside her.
11:44Did that ever happen?
11:45When?
11:46I was sitting.
11:47You were sitting?
11:48Okay.
11:49Closer than usual?
11:50Further than usual?
11:51Because something happened for us to get called, right?
11:54A normal argument doesn't typically.
11:59I've never touched her and raised her voices ever.
12:02Okay.
12:03It's not a voice.
12:04I don't know.
12:06Have you ever had that thought before?
12:09No, I have balls to do it.
12:11It might be psychologically and a self-ashamed.
12:15It might be a tumor, but it might be a pulse.
12:18You understand that in our profession, it's not uncommon either.
12:21Dan denied ever having any violent dispute, and the deputy was left with little grounds
12:26to make an arrest, and had to let it go.
12:29However, just four days later, he once again sits opposite Dan, with Kendi dead in the same
12:35house she desperately escaped.
12:38What lured Kendi back to this house is a disturbing secret, and this interview is about to uncover
12:44just that.
12:45Did you ever make any statements that had you concerned about her well-being?
12:50Yeah, about every day.
12:51Well, it's just, she's so emotional.
12:53She tells us, well, we should split up, and I'd agree with her, and she'd go the other
13:02way.
13:03How long has it been going on?
13:06This itch.
13:07Last itch, we were pretty distant, you know.
13:10I knew something was up, but...
13:12Last month, then?
13:13Yeah.
13:14It turned out to be, yeah, pretty distant.
13:18Apart from Dan, nobody believes Kendi could have taken her own life, as she didn't show
13:23signs of depression or self-harm.
13:26In fact, according to her family, in the last few days, she'd seemed happy and hopeful.
13:30In search of the truth, the detectives keep probing Dan for hours.
13:35Dan doesn't reveal much, but deputies know Dan not just from work, but also for being a very
13:46hot-tempered man, so much so that a warning was issued before entering the house that night.
14:16Dan is known for a shady secret from his past.
14:22He once was a decorated officer, but then he began to suspect his neighbor and wife were
14:27having an affair.
14:28The situation escalated to a point where he threatened the neighbor with his AR-15 while
14:33in uniform and on duty.
14:35This incident cost Dan his job.
14:38Dan, another thing I've got to bring up to you is, you know, obviously you're distraught,
14:46you're upset, you've been sobbing throughout the night, right?
14:54But there's no tears coming out.
14:58No tears in Dan's eyes is an element that deputies at the crime scene have even noted
15:11down in their report.
15:12Shortly after Kendi left, Dan texted her to apologize and ask her to discuss the divorce
15:17and begged her to come back.
15:20At first, Kendi hesitated, but she wished to finalize the divorce, and Dan had made some
15:25promises.
15:25Her family couldn't believe she was going back.
15:29She thought the fact that he'd already been caught once would protect her.
15:33And she even told her family, well, he's not going to do anything now that he's been
15:38caught.
15:39I should be fine.
15:41Kendi came back because Dan had asked her to.
15:43But in this interrogation, Dan plays a man who's comfortable with whatever Kendi had wished
15:48for, even divorce.
15:50She went and put earnest money on a house while I was up on the slope down there.
15:57Texted me once she was going to go see an attorney.
15:59She saw the attorney a day before I got in, and then she had those papers.
16:05And I tried to talk her out of it.
16:08Let's talk first.
16:08Well, she didn't.
16:10And so, since I've been here, we've been just going back and forth.
16:18You want to make it work?
16:19Okay, I'll encourage you to make it work.
16:20If you don't want to make it work, I'm encouraging you to still make it work.
16:24I couldn't see it thrown 27 years away.
16:26But then, you know, I'm the one that filled out the papers, and I'll give her what she
16:31wants, if that she wants.
16:32We'll do everything 50-50 okay.
16:35That includes the flipping heist down there.
16:38So you're, I mean, obviously, you're wanting to make things work here, and she's saying...
16:42I'm trying to encourage her.
16:43She's telling you, you're not hearing me.
16:46I want the house and to change.
16:48Okay.
16:50I feel out of love.
16:51It breaks my heart.
16:52I'm hurting you.
16:53Yeah.
16:53And then she'll come back and go, I'm not sure if I want the divorce.
16:57Right at this moment, something alarming occurs, which will convince deputies that it's not
17:02just them who find Dan questionable.
17:05Kendi's biological daughter, Brooke Wilkins, calls, and this call will change everything
17:10for Dan.
17:11What?
17:12What are you talking about?
17:14From across the room, I could hear her extremely upset, emotional, accusing Dan of killing Kendi,
17:22her mom.
17:24Brooke's call puts the detectives on high alert.
17:26Something is not right in the picture Dan's portraying, and everyone around him can sense
17:31it.
17:32Dan believes he's thought everything through, but little does he know that this interview
17:37is about to begin his downfall in the next few moments.
17:40Did she just accuse you of this?
17:43No.
17:43Let's see.
17:44What it sounded like.
17:46Jane, I was across the room and I could hear her.
17:49Oh, no.
17:51She's angry.
17:52Yeah.
17:53She's angry.
17:55Why would your daughter think it was?
17:57What in the world would give her that impression?
18:00There's no way in the world she believed in the house.
18:04Good watch.
18:07Kids don't want to believe in the house.
18:10They also don't want to believe that their dad would do it.
18:13Yeah.
18:14I'll be honest with you, that was not expecting anything else to say.
18:17Maybe.
18:17Dan gets up and tries to escape the sharp turn the questioning has taken.
18:22But things have already started to slip out of control, and for the first time since detectives
18:27entered, he feels like he's not in charge.
18:31In this struggle, he flashes his first true emotion, pure panic.
18:35Dan, why does your daughter think you killed your wife?
18:40I have no idea.
18:42Because I've got to tell you, that's my fault.
18:45Chills down my spine.
18:48You did it, didn't you, Dan?
18:51No, I didn't.
18:52I didn't think so.
18:53But now, after it wasn't that, I think you did it, didn't you?
18:56Out the hell.
18:57Out the hell.
18:59She doesn't know.
19:00She wasn't here.
19:01In these highly tense moments, the deputy notices details he'd missed earlier.
19:08Dan has a shirt on with fresh perfume stains, a sign that he recently changed his clothes,
19:13although he claims he's been in the same clothes since before Kendi's death.
19:18Dan Howard is about to do what killers fear most, leave behind a series of mistakes,
19:23each one dragging him closer to the truth he's desperate to bury.
19:27One of the other things that we had learned is that one of the deputies videotaped
19:33and photographed the washer and dryer in the basement.
19:38So by looking at the video, I could see how much time was left behind on the dryer,
19:43that the time that the dryer was started was within a minute of the 911 call.
19:49And so if he is so upset, if he's so distraught,
19:54but he had the presence of mind to move laundry over and start the dryer.
19:59But in this series of mistakes, the one he's about to make could cost Dan the most.
20:04The deputy asks him whether he shot a gun today, and by the looks of it,
20:08it seemed this was a loose thread Dan never thought to tie.
20:12I shot my .40 today, but I showered.
20:15But when I took that pistol and started processing it,
20:21not only was the pistol clean, there was no evidence that it had been fired, no sooting.
20:26And when we did go to collect his gunshot residue swab,
20:30he immediately stuck his hands in his pocket and began scrubbing them around
20:34in kind of a to-and-fro fashion before we would put his hands out.
20:37That's evidence that he's trying to cover up something.
20:40Soon after this, Dan's lawyer shows up, bringing this interview to an end.
20:44Deputies suspect something's very wrong with Dan and are relying on the autopsy reports to expose him.
20:51But the result isn't going to turn out as they've imagined.
20:54The coroner ruled Kendi Howard's death to be undetermined.
20:58The autopsy can't confirm whether it was suicide or a murder.
21:02Investigators believe it's because Dan staged the scene well,
21:06but with little evidence, they can't arrest him.
21:09For now, it could still be the self-inflicted tragedy he claims.
21:12They decide to bring Brooke in, and why she thinks this is not the suicide that Dan is staging it to be
21:19would take deputies by surprise.
21:21So, when we talked the other day, I mean, I guess, today, what do you think?
21:27What are your thoughts? What do you think happened?
21:29I know he shot her. I know.
21:31I don't feel like there's probably going to be anything to prove that.
21:37I know how he is. He would have thought that out.
21:39I feel like he probably was going to do that Friday,
21:41and when she woke up, he didn't have his chance that he wanted,
21:45and she went back home, and she shouldn't have went back home.
21:48Would it be normal, I mean, if she wanted to flip out over this house
21:52to go upstairs, undress, somehow make it from the bedroom to the bathroom naked
21:58because there are no clothing in the bathroom?
22:01No, that's not super weird.
22:02Right, okay.
22:04She always takes a bath almost every night.
22:07It's odd for her to not take a bath. That would be weird.
22:09Okay.
22:10Pour a bubble bath, not just a bath, but take time, put bubbles in it.
22:14Put her hair up so her hair doesn't get wet.
22:17No, that's also normal.
22:19Okay.
22:19She didn't want her hair wet ever.
22:21And then get in the bath done and commit.
22:24There's a problem with that, and it's what bugs me the most.
22:27I've thought about it several times.
22:29She's getting her...
22:30Done.
22:31And her...
22:31Done.
22:32She obviously has a little bit of issues with how her body looks.
22:35There's no way in hell she'd be okay with people finding her naked.
22:38Detectives believe bringing the children in would help them clear the truth.
22:42However, Dan and Kendi's son would walk in and leave them more confused than ever.
22:48She was on the phone talking with people right up in the middle of the house.
22:55That she'd talked to you before.
22:57Yeah.
22:58Yeah.
22:58And there was nothing mentioned, you know, about being depressed.
23:02In fact, it was the opposite.
23:04Yeah.
23:04So that seems a little odd.
23:07I don't know.
23:08I don't think you did it.
23:10She wrote a will on Friday when she was down there.
23:12I don't know if you guys heard that yet or anything.
23:15That's what her told me.
23:17It was like, she packed a bag left, then came back the next day, even though she was super scared.
23:22And she wrote a will that day, though?
23:24That, that's almost like, it doesn't make sense to me.
23:27It's like, why would you go down there for a day, write a will, come back to someone that
23:31you're scared, that you're deathly afraid of, with a will in your hand?
23:35In the next few months, the detectives would try to put together what had happened at Dan
23:40and Kendi's house that evening.
23:42Their theory is that Dan killed his wife with carotid restraint, a skill he learned during
23:47his service as a police officer.
23:49The struggle led to the bruises all over her body via blunt force trauma, but no clear-cut
23:55cause of death.
23:56Then he stages his wife in the bathtub and shoots her post-death, which is what leads
24:01to there being less blood than expected, something the investigators had noticed immediately upon
24:06entering the crime scene.
24:07If Kendi Howard would have been alive when she was shot, she would have bled profusely.
24:13The tongue is a muscle made up of lots and lots and lots of veins and arteries.
24:21She would have been spraying blood out of her mouth.
24:23Finally, the angle of the bullet also points towards something being off.
24:29A bullet has been fired straight through her mouth, traveling downward, not upward, as
24:34is typical in suicides.
24:35After accumulating evidence for four months, in July 2023, he's finally arrested and charged
24:41with Kendi Howard's murder.
24:42And then in 1994, he became an Idaho state trooper.
24:46He had the training, knowledge, and experience to be able to process crime scenes and collect evidence.
24:53Ladies and gentlemen, there are two sides to that coin.
24:58Having the ability to read a crime scene and collect evidence also gives you the ability
25:03to stage a crime scene and not leave evidence.
25:08It takes the prosecution two years to build a strong case against Dan.
25:12As an ex-cop, he thought he'd planned the perfect murder and could get away with it.
25:17But what he failed to realize was that the people investigating him were also highly trained.
25:22When his trial begins, there are fears that maybe he might fool a jury.
25:27But as it turns out, he couldn't fool the jury.
25:30If I'm not that monster, I assure you, that people betrayed me.
25:38But your honor is about a sentence in his family.
25:43I love my wife.
25:47And I miss her.
25:49Words cannot describe the pain that I feel without.
25:53My wife took the life.
25:57My will to live went down significantly.
26:02I was a jury.
26:04I found me guilty.
26:05I didn't want that.
26:10Thank you, Your Honor.
26:10That's all.
26:11On May 4th, 2024, Daniel Howard is sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
