Israel’s chief military legal officer, Major-General Yifat Tomer-Yerushalmi, has resigned following the release of a leaked video showing Israeli soldiers abusing a Palestinian detainee at the Sde Teiman facility during the 2024 war. The footage triggered nationwide outrage and led to criminal charges against five soldiers.
Tomer-Yerushalmi confirmed she approved the video’s release, saying she acted to protect the military’s legal system from smear campaigns and emphasized that even “the worst terrorists cannot be abused.” Her resignation comes amid protests, political attacks from right-wing leaders, and renewed scrutiny over alleged mistreatment of Palestinians in detention. Defense Minister Israel Katz has confirmed an active criminal investigation, while figures such as Itamar Ben-Gvir celebrated the resignation and demanded further probes.
