03:45Coach, how crazy is the concept that the defending Super Bowl champs
03:50Would play a team of college all-stars in the preseason?
03:54Well, think about it today, Eli
03:55I mean, now we can't even get these guys to play in the bowl game
03:57Not talking about doing something right before they go to camp
04:01And even for pro teams to allow them to even do that, right?
04:04Yeah, and they played this game 42 times
04:06The college team actually won nine times
04:09Which is, it's kind of crazy like he said

06:05All right, so this is the last time that the All Stars won the games in 1963
06:11against Lombardi's Packers, who were great team
06:14This is Vince Lombardi, coach of the finest foot-ball team in the world,
06:21the Green Bay Packers
06:22The big word in professional football is execution
06:26All players succeed on a blackboard, but men make them work
06:29I believe I read that Vince Lombardi said
06:31it was the worst loss of his coaching career

08:06Oh my, there's Marty Schottenheimer.
08:08Wow, he had a big neck.
08:10I know.
08:11What position was he, coach?
08:13Linebacker.
08:14Dick Buckus.
08:15That's a pretty good linebacker.
08:16That's pretty good.
08:17And who are they going against?
08:18Jim Brown.
08:19Jim Brown.
08:20Let's go.
08:22Oh, here we go, here we go.
08:23Buckus in the middle.
08:26Quick diagnosis, hits the gap.
08:28Okay, okay.
08:29Looks like a horse collar right there.
08:31Don't you think there were like little signs you saw in this game
08:34of guys that they're going to naturally make it to the next level?
08:37Look at that right there.
08:39Just a feel for the, like there's no false steps.
08:42Yeah.
08:42No false steps.
08:43Look at him go.
08:44And felt it, came underneath it.
08:46That is a classic video right there.
08:49Oh my gosh.
08:50All right, coach, this is the 1975 All-Star game.
08:54The Pittsburgh Steelers are the defending champs,
08:56and they ought to go against this kid from Jackson State,
08:59a guy by the name of Walter Payton right here.
09:02I remember this game to a degree,
09:05because I remember being in high school,
09:07the Steelers had just won the Super Bowl,
09:09and this was pretty, pretty special.
09:12It's like this guy from Jackson State.
09:14You kidding me?
09:16Jack Hamm, Jack Lambert, Joe Green,
09:18Hall of Fame defensive players.
09:21You're going against the steel curtain, man.
09:24Remember in the Super Bowl,
09:25these people held the Minnesota Vikings
09:27to only 17 yards on the ground.
09:30All right, here we go.
09:34Jack Lambert, Walter Payton.
09:37Jack Lambert, Walter Payton.
09:39He can't make Jack Lambert miss.
09:40Jack Lambert's a Hall of Fame line.
09:42Okay.
09:42You don't even touch him.
09:43You don't even touch him.
09:44Jack Hamm will get him.
09:45Hamm will get him.
09:47No.
09:48No.
09:50And now, wait a minute.
09:51Lambert's not done.
09:52He's mad.
09:53He's mad.
09:53That wasn't a late hit back then.
09:58No, no.
09:59That was just like a reminder.
10:00Hey, hey, rookie.
10:02This is what you're coming into.
10:03You don't make me embarrassed.
10:04Look how late it is.
10:05Both these guys going after this guy.
10:06I'm getting mad, right?
10:07We're getting madder as the game's going on.
10:11Walter Payton in space.
10:12Not a good situation for a linebacker.
10:14There's a reason why I called him sweetness.
10:17Look at this.
10:17This is classic.
10:19This is an indication of the things to come.
10:22From Colter's Field in Chicago, Illinois,
10:25it's the college all-star football game.
10:27This is the next year, the last game.
10:29The last game.
10:30Steelers won 24-0.
10:33Harris in the draw.
10:34Big hole.
10:35Forget it.
10:37Harris proving his 230 pounds like a light weight.
10:41They had bad weather, Coach,
10:43and so the fans stormed the field
10:46and, like, tore down the goal post,
10:48and they just said in the middle of the third quarter,
10:50like, you know what?
10:51Let's just call it.
10:52We've had enough.
10:53I've never seen anything quite like it.
10:54Literally hundreds of people out on the field now,
10:57sliding around.
10:58They're enjoying what's happening.
11:02It's going to be awfully hard to get control again
11:04and get them all off the field
11:05because it's very hard to identify.
11:07I would suspect that the Steelers are,
11:11oh, wow, here comes one, baby.
11:14I think you'll probably be able to hear this one.
11:15So that was lightning right there?
11:18Yeah.
11:18That's before they had radar.
11:19Right here.
11:20They probably didn't have great radar.
11:22Oh, my gosh.
11:22Yeah, look at that lightning right on them.
11:24All right, boy, you can see the players.
11:25They don't even wait for the horn or anything.
11:26You just start, you see lightning, you just run in.
11:29Coach, what would you say to these fans
11:31tearing down a metal goal post during a lightning storm?
11:34Is that a good idea?
11:35I don't think it's a good idea.
11:37It is metal and it's lightning out there right now.
11:39I know it's the last game, but this could be your last day.
11:44The final images of the college all-star game
11:47were fans storming Soldier Field
11:49during that lightning storm in 1976.
11:52Due to rising costs and injury concerns,
11:55the game never returned.
11:58The tradition of the game is the best from college,
12:02going to the next level,
12:04going against the best from the previous year.
12:06The concept was absolutely phenomenal
12:08and the pride that everybody took
12:10when they stepped on that field.
12:12I don't care whether it's an exhibition game
12:14or it's an all-star game.
12:15When you stepped on that field,
12:17there was a sense of pride of who you were
12:18as a football player
12:19and what you represented with your football team.
12:23After meeting with Coach Cowher,
12:25I went across town to find out
12:27about another lost tradition.
12:30Bob Hope's All-Americans.
12:31Kyle Brandt, just the sports media star
12:34I was looking for.
12:34Yeah. What's the plan today, Eli?
12:36I want to talk about a show
12:37that you're an expert on.
12:39Love Island?
12:40Close.
12:41The Bob Hope Christmas Special.
12:43And now here's the star of our show, Bob Hope!
12:49Thank you.
12:52Thank you very much.
12:53Well, here I am,
12:54NBC's Christmas present to you all.
12:57Batteries not included.
12:59For all you youngsters out there,
13:04Bob Hope was a comedian, actor, singer, and host
13:07who entertained America for nearly 80 years.
13:11But it's great to be here on those dates.
13:13You know, there's only 10 days left to shop for Christmas.
13:16Prices are so high this year,
13:17some folks are doing comparison shoplifting.
13:19From 1957 to 1995,
13:26the Bob Hope Christmas Special
13:27was appointment viewing for pretty much everyone.
13:31Christmas is pretty strange in Beverly Hills.
13:33When sandal lands on your roof,
13:35you're expected to provide valet parking.
13:38In 1970, the Variety Style program set a record
13:43when 64% of the viewing public in the United States
13:47tuned in.
13:48And now it's time once again
13:49for a part of our Christmas show
13:51that's become one of my perennial favorites.
13:53The introduction of the Associated Press
13:55All-American football team.
13:57When magazines and newspapers were going out of vogue,
14:00Hope made the reveal of the All-American team
14:02part of the Christmas special.
14:04I'd be glued to the tube
14:06as he delivered a classic one-liner
14:09as each of the All-Americans
14:10took their turn on stage.
14:12Brian Bosworth, University of Oklahoma, linebacker.
14:15To look at Brian, you couldn't tell
14:17that he's broken 11 bones and a nose.
14:19And that's not even counting his own injuries.
14:24I want to bring back
14:25that Christmas special tradition.
14:27So who better to help than Kyle Brandt?
14:30After starting at running back
14:31for three seasons at Princeton,
14:33the Emmy winner's gone on
14:35to build a diverse resume
14:36that Bob Hope would have appreciated.
14:39Welcome to Angry Runs.
14:41It's judgment day, folks.
14:43This could be the one that ends me.
14:46This isn't supposed to happen.
14:47Dump it down and collision time.
14:49Boom!
14:50Come on!
14:51How am I not supposed to hype
14:53about Dave Amont going
14:54because he's still going?
14:55You've probably seen Kyle's Angry Runs segment
14:58on Good Morning Football.
14:59But he's also acted in Days of Our Lives.
15:03I'll tell you why he did it.
15:05He did it because he was drunk
15:06and because he was stoned out of his mind on drugs.
15:09That's why he did it.
15:10Was on MTV's The Real World
15:12and hosts the live action game show Frogger.
15:16Most importantly,
15:17he was an avid viewer of Bob Hope's Christmas special.
15:22Kyle, this is probably a question
15:23that you don't get asked too often,
15:25but what do you think of when I say Bob Hope?
15:30Christmas.
15:31Christmas.
15:32Christmas, yeah.
15:32I used to watch the specials
15:34with my mom and my grandmother,
15:36three generations.
15:37And I remember when I was a little kid,
15:38my grandmother told me
15:39that Bob Hope was Santa Claus
15:42with his beard shaved off.
15:43Oh, really?
15:44And I actually believed that.
15:45So I looked at him like that
15:46and she said,
15:46and that's why his name is Hope.
15:48So for years,
15:49I would look at him just magically like that.
15:51And then I grow up,
15:52and I'm like,
15:52his name can't really be Hope.
15:53If you look it up,
15:54his last name really is Hope.
15:55He's the real deal.
15:56It's real.
15:56I always think Christmas though, man.
15:57No doubt.
15:58And you remember ever watching,
16:00you know,
16:00when the AP All-American football team
16:03was presented
16:04on his Christmas special every year?
16:05I remember it vividly.
16:07Live from NBC Studios in Burbank,
16:10in stereo where available,
16:12it's the Bob Hope Christmas special.
16:14From the NBC Studios in Burbank,
16:17in stereo,
16:19it's the Bob Hope Christmas show.
16:22Starring the Associated Press
16:25All-America football team,
16:28Barbara Eden,
16:30Emmanuel Lewis,
16:32and special guest star,
16:35Brooke Shields.
16:36And the football players looked so big
16:39and half of them had mustaches.
16:40They looked like 30 years old
16:41and I was just riveted.
16:43Bruce Smith,
16:44Virginia Tech,
16:44defensive tackle.
16:46Look at the size of this guy.
16:47If we had anything this big
16:48when I went to school,
16:49we held a senior prominent.
16:52It was like a kid
16:53who liked entertainment
16:54and singing and football.
16:56It was all in one place
16:57and it was Christmastime.
16:58It was just magic.
17:00Dion Sanders,
17:01cornerback,
17:01Florida State University.
17:03Dion plays football
17:04by the numbers.
17:05He grabs 11 men at a time.
17:07Chances are
17:08one of them has the ball.
17:10Kyle,
17:11I dug through the archives.
17:13Let's go.
17:13I thought it would be fun
17:14to get your take
17:15on some clips
17:16from the Bob Hope
17:17Christmas special.
17:18Awesome.
17:19I feel like I'm at
17:19my grandma's house right now.
17:24In the Olympics,
17:26the dream of every competitor
17:27is to win a gold medal.
17:28In college football,
17:29one of the top honors
17:30is to be voted the best
17:31by the Associated Press
17:33sportswriters
17:33from all over this nation.
17:35Ladies and gentlemen,
17:36please welcome
17:37these outstanding
17:37young athletes.
17:39What a great introduction.
17:39You got the whistle,
17:40you got the background
17:41with like the yardage marks
17:43and just, you know,
17:44make it official.
17:45He's in the tux.
17:46He's looking sharp.
17:47It's very elegant.
17:47He looks like James Bond.
17:48It's incredible.
17:49Steve Young,
17:50Brigham Young University
17:51quarterback.
17:52Brigham Young makes a habit
17:53of producing great quarterbacks,
17:54but many of the experts
17:55say Steve is the best
17:56ever BYU.
17:58His great, great,
17:59great granddaddy
18:00was the Brigham Young.
18:02No wonder he made the team.
18:03He knows the owner.
18:05What I love is that
18:06they come in there
18:07full pads.
18:08Full pads.
18:09Shoulder pads.
18:10Helmets.
18:10He comes from Utah
18:12and he's got his pads.
18:13He flies with him,
18:14the helmet, everything.
18:15Yeah.
18:16A hundred percent
18:17he had to check that luggage.
18:18Definitely.
18:18They're not sending that over.
18:20Full uniform.
18:21Like he's ready.
18:21I think he has spikes on
18:22and tape and everything.
18:25Bo Jackson.
18:26Oh my God.
18:26He's ready to go.
18:28Bo Jackson,
18:28Auburn University,
18:29running back.
18:30Give this guy the ball
18:31and he'll go for six
18:32or seven yards
18:32and knock a few people
18:33down along the way.
18:34He's a lot like
18:35a Jerry Ford T-Shark.
18:37Do you think Bo got that joke?
18:40Not at all.
18:41Not even a little bit.
18:43But he laughs so kindly.
18:45Bo's a great dude.
18:46And I think maybe
18:46he didn't get it
18:47because Mr. Hope
18:48referred to President
18:49Gerald Ford as Jerry Ford,
18:50which you don't hear much.
18:52But he was probably
18:52friends with him.
18:54Jerry Ford was president
18:55when Bo was a kid.
18:55I don't think he understands
18:56the golf joke
18:57about a president
18:58in the 70s.
18:59But Bob runs right
19:00through the stop sign.
19:01Reggie White,
19:02University of Tennessee,
19:03defensive tackle.
19:03Reggie's not only
19:05the centerpiece
19:05of the volunteer defense,
19:06he's also an ordained
19:07Baptist minister,
19:08which works out great.
19:09Before they carry you
19:10off the field,
19:11he gives you the last rites.
19:14I think I just got religion.
19:17Bless you, my son.
19:19I just can't believe
19:20Reggie White is a college
19:21student in this video.
19:22This is unbelievable.
19:23He looks old.
19:24He looks really old.
19:25He looks like Hightower
19:26from the police academy.
19:27You know what I mean?
19:28We got more?
19:29We got more.
19:30All right, come on.
19:31Let's go.
19:31This is my guy.
19:32William Perry,
19:33middle guard,
19:34Clemson University.
19:36Bill Perry.
19:41Did the bus come in you?
19:43Reggie likes that one.
19:49Bob's off script.
19:51Bob broke character.
19:51He's never seen
19:53someone so big before.
19:54Bill tells me
19:55he was even big
19:56when he was little.
19:57Now that he's big,
19:58he's even bigger.
20:00Bill, how'd you get
20:00to be 320 pounds?
20:02When I got to 324,
20:04I went on a diet.
20:07Well, I'm sure you'd feel
20:08better with all that fat off.
20:11You know,
20:12Bob Hope had his last
20:13All-American team
20:14in 1995.
20:16What do you say
20:16we bring back
20:17that tradition?
20:18Are you telling me
20:19that Jeremiah Smith
20:20and Ryan Williams
20:21are here?
20:22not exactly.
20:24Ladies and gentlemen,
20:27it's Eli's All-Americans.
20:30Here are your hosts,
20:32Kyle Brandt and Eli Manning.
20:35Hello, folks.
20:37You're about to meet
20:38the best college football players
20:39who never had their moment
20:41with Bob Hope,
20:42as chosen by me.
20:43Wow.
20:45All these legends
20:46together in one room.
20:48Actually, Kyle,
20:48we didn't have the money
20:49to fly everyone in,
20:50so we'll be using
20:51a more cost-effective option
20:53with the help
20:54of Sherry and Rhonda.
20:57You wrote jokes
20:58for all these guys?
20:59Well, Bob Hope
21:00had 13 writers
21:01working for him,
21:02but still enjoyed
21:03recycling his materials,
21:05so as a tribute,
21:06I'll be using
21:07Bob's original jokes.
21:09What about me?
21:10I wrote all your jokes.
21:11Here we go.
21:13Let's bring out
21:14our first All-American.
21:15It's University of Tennessee
21:17quarterback Peyton Manning.
21:19All right.
21:21Peyton's here, of course.
21:22He's also in ads
21:23for baked beans,
21:24Nerf, insurance,
21:26and hemorrhoid cream.
21:28Actually, his agent
21:28couldn't book that last one,
21:30but Peyton would have done it
21:31if he could.
21:31You know he would have done it.
21:32He needs it.
21:32He needs it?
21:33Gross.
21:34I got nothing on this guy.
21:35My dad said I had to include him,
21:36so yeah, let's just move on.
21:39Tebow, Tebow.
21:40It's Tebow time.
21:41Please welcome
21:42the University of Florida's
21:43Tim Tebow.
21:47Dig this, one-man crowd.
21:49Tim owes his strength
21:50to his enormous appetite.
21:51He eats four square meals a day
21:53and six round ones.
21:55Hey, look.
21:58It's the pride of Texas
21:59running back Ricky Williams.
22:01Wow, I wonder what
22:02these jokes will be about.
22:03I don't know.
22:04Ricky did a lot
22:05during his career.
22:06He was the MVP
22:07of the Cotton Bowl
22:08and set the NCAA
22:09career rushing record.
22:10The only thing he regrets, Eli,
22:12is not getting the chance
22:14to play in the Poland
22:15Weed Eater Bowl.
22:17Here we go.
22:17Here's the weed joke.
22:19Well, if it isn't
22:20the player who beat out
22:21Peyton for the 1997
22:24Heisman Trophy,
22:25I don't even have to look.
22:26It's Michigan's
22:27Charles Woodson.
22:29Charles is one of football's
22:31greatest pass defenders
22:32and tacklers.
22:33He's been responsible
22:34for more turnovers
22:35than Betty Crocker.
22:37I like that one.
22:39All right,
22:40we've got another
22:40Heisman winner,
22:42USC's Reggie Bush.
22:43All right.
22:44Love Reggie
22:45and all kinds of content
22:46for us here.
22:47Let's see.
22:48Let's get into it.
22:49When you see a guy
22:49named Bush run,
22:50he usually goes all the way.
22:52Unless his name
22:53is Jeb, of course.
22:55Hello, Florida.
22:56Wow.
22:56He's got more tricky moves
22:58than a nudist
22:59at a Bumblebee convention.
23:00He has it.
23:05Nailed it.
23:05That's the best joke so far.
23:07Clubhouse leader.
23:08But careful, everyone.
23:09There's a Badger loose
23:10in the house.
23:12It's a big, bad one.
23:13J.J. Watt, Eli.
23:15This guy's got a lot
23:16in common with J.J. Evans.
23:18Dino-mide.
23:20That's from Good Times,
23:21everybody.
23:21Good Times.
23:22No one will know that
23:23except you.
23:24Our team's collective IQ
23:25just went up a bunch.
23:26It's Stanford quarterback
23:27Andrew Luck.
23:29All right.
23:30Here he comes.
23:31You know, Andrew's
23:32such a smart quarterback.
23:33He makes Peyton
23:34look like Eli.
23:39Kyle, I'm standing right here.
23:41That's a great one.
23:42Florida State's
23:43Jameis Winston is here.
23:44You knew it.
23:45You wanted it.
23:45You got it.
23:46Jameis is so good.
23:47He was drafted
23:48in pro football
23:49and baseball.
23:49He might be the most
23:51talented Florida State product
23:53since Burt Reynolds.
23:55Cannonball run.
23:57All right.
23:58Look what we got here.
23:59It's my former teammate,
24:01Penn State's
24:02Saquon Barclay.
24:03All right.
24:04Barclay can run
24:04over tacklers through them
24:06or toss them aside.
24:07He's more dangerous
24:08with the ball
24:09than Gerald Ford.
24:10Come on, Kyle.
24:11Everybody loves
24:12a good Gerald Ford joke
24:13these days.
24:14Thank you.
24:14It is the most recent
24:16Heisman winner,
24:17two-way star
24:18from Colorado.
24:19It's Travis Hunter.
24:21Breaking news here, Eli.
24:22Travis Hunter
24:23is going to be my co-host
24:24and the cameraman
24:25at the same time.
24:26He can do both?
24:26Yes, he can do it all.
24:28I've owned Swiss Army knives
24:29that were less versatile.
24:32All right.
24:32Last but certainly not least.
24:34Oh, thank God.
24:35It's the quarterback
24:35who is a runner-up
24:37in Super Bowls 42 and 46,
24:40Michigan's Tom Brady.
24:41He is one cool customer, though.
24:43The pressure's never too much.
24:45Kind of like
24:46an underinflated football.
24:48Boom!
24:48To the solar plexus.
24:50Drop the hammer.
24:51All right.
24:51There they are,
24:52ladies and gentlemen.
24:53the 11 members
24:54of Eli's
24:56All-American Team.
25:00Let's do something
25:01Bob Hope never did
25:02in the show
25:03with a selfie.
25:04All right.
25:05Everybody in here.
25:05Get in here.
25:06Come on, let's go.
25:07All right, you ready?
25:08We got
25:08All-Americans on three.
25:11One, two, three.
25:12All-Americans!
25:17You know,
25:18he's such a great
25:19defensive weapon.
25:20Gorbachev tried
25:21to have him on the...
25:22I don't even know
25:23what I'm saying.
25:24Gorbachev.
25:25This is my favorite part
25:26of the script.
25:26Gorbachev.
25:26From J.J.
25:27to Gorbachev.
25:28Gorbachev.
25:29What are we doing?
25:30I wanted to go through
25:31some teams that would
25:33have had interesting
25:34match-ups against the
25:36defending Super Bowl
25:37champs.
25:37I want to go back
25:38to 2004,
25:40my draft class,
25:41going against
25:42the defending champs,
25:43the New England Patriots,
25:44who I end up having
25:45a pretty good history
25:46with.
25:47Right, Tom?
25:48Jameis, of course,
25:49loves to eat Ws.
25:51Now that he's on
25:52the Giants,
25:53he might have to
25:54develop a taste
25:55for Ls.
25:56That's a low blow,
25:57Kyle.
25:58I mean...
25:58I did not write
25:59that either.
26:00You're going all script.
26:01to Gorbachev.
26:20Oh, my God!
