00:00Let's talk about recording with Joe. Let's talk about Joe's days when we're doing vocals.
00:05You know, the actual days we're booked, Joe's coming in, we're doing vocals.
00:10And I've had many of those days.
00:13As a producer of a bunch of the records and a lot of the songs, we would definitely have a schedule with Joe.
00:19And the thing about Joe is that he was such an artist and such a performer that getting the buzz to just a proper stage to get the performance was key.
00:34And we were very, very wary and we'd be watching on where the buzz would go and level off and then where it would run out of control where we weren't going to get anything else.
00:45The only struggle is we knew that we had a small window.
00:49The window would be maybe an hour or 90 minutes, maybe two hours tops.
00:56And a lot of that would be, let's set up the atmosphere and then let's sit.
01:04So I always felt like he was gearing up for a live performance or, you know, gearing up to sing live.
01:12So it would be a couple of beers, a little puff, get out in front of 100,000 people and then put your place in that.
01:19The downside of it is if we needed him to keep singing, if he overshot and started going down the other side,
01:26after five or six beers, we weren't getting the Joe takes that we needed.
01:31So at that point, it was over.
01:34So a couple hours in and then he comes back in the control room and then it's like, okay, you're chilled, you're buzzed, you're buzzed now.
01:43So that was really the routine with Joe singing was to find that sweet spot.
01:52And those performances, the two beer, three beer performances, a little bit of puff, were amazing.
01:58Those couple, two or three takes would be great.
02:02You always had to get the first take with Joe, always.
02:04And if he sang live with the band, I mean, even better.
02:10There was many moments when Joe had the beers, the Becks, whatever it was, and went out there and sang.
02:17And I would look at Ray and we'd have the same look on each other's faces of, wow, he actually did that, didn't he?
02:23Or we'd go, oh my God, he's going for it.
02:24So I think those were the most exciting moments when we just look at each other because we didn't know what to expect.
02:31We didn't know how far he'd reach.
02:33And sometimes he'd reach really far and those became the magic moments in all the records we made.
