00:00Hola, hay una emergencia de emergencia.
00:08No hay gente, no hay gente.
00:12No hay gente.
00:20We'll work around the clock if it means putting criminals behind bars.
00:24It only takes that one mistake for us to catch you.
00:27Crime doesn't pay.
00:28You will be caught.
00:35Some of the most audacious burglaries and heists may look slick,
00:38but in reality, they are often highly organised, meticulously planned
00:43and rely on an arsenal of tricks in order to steal from unsuspecting people, companies and institutions.
00:51To investigate the most elaborate of these,
00:54an elite unit of the Metropolitan Police are often sought out.
00:59And they're called the Flying Squad.
01:02I spent 12 years of my service in that unit and the work of the Flying Squad makes me very proud.
01:12They deal with serious and organised crime, but in particular armed robberies, including jewellers, banks.
01:18They also deal with live kidnaps, covert surveillance.
01:22No stone is left unturned and they will catch all of a gang.
01:26In May 2023, the Flying Squad were alerted to a sophisticated criminal gang stealing hundreds of thousands of pounds of cash and jewellery right across the UK.
01:41We took out £15,000 cash to pay for the builders.
01:48I had the money in my bag.
01:50Both my partner and myself walked back to the car.
01:55He was sitting in the passenger side.
01:58The bag that was struck across me was now in between his feet on the floor.
02:05There was a gentleman that came to the front of the car, sitting on the bonnet.
02:10He was saying, oh, I'm waiting for my friend to come.
02:12My friend wants to park here.
02:13Just as I was just gently pulling out of the car park spot, all of a sudden I've heard a pop.
02:26He was trying to guide us to pull over and he was shouting quite loudly, you've got something in your tyre, you've got something in your tyre.
02:35In the sidewall of my tyre, there was a small metal rod.
02:43My partner, he's like, oh, all right, I'll get out and have a look.
02:47Whilst Andrea and her partner were looking at the tyre, their cash was stolen from inside.
02:56We knew exactly what had happened.
03:01And we just quickly turned around and it just like they'd melted away, just dispersed, just gone.
03:10You know, you work hard for what you get in life.
03:14And for someone just to take that away from you, it was just devastating.
03:22The couple had become victims of a meticulously organised crime gang who specialised in distraction to steal from people.
03:31There's a number of different types of distraction offences.
03:34So they might put sauce on the back of their jacket and then say to the person, oh, look, you've got a stain on your jacket.
03:40Can I help you get that off?
03:42Dropping banknotes on the floor and saying, oh, you've dropped your money.
03:46And as you're distracted, they'll steal the items.
03:49But it's doing it a sleight of hand.
03:51So they actually won't see what's happened until after the event.
03:56Four months later, and another high value distraction theft was reported in Glasgow.
04:02This time, a jewellery trader was targeted as he walked across the city centre to a business meeting.
04:09Showing the hallmarks of a highly professional theft, the case was escalated to the Met Police's flying squad.
04:18The lead detective, who must remain anonymous for operational reasons, scrutinised CCTV footage to establish how the victim and his haul of jewellery had been identified by the suspects.
04:31The trader is spotted on CCTV making his way through the city to a jewellers in Argyle Arcade.
04:39He is closely followed by two suspects wearing hats.
04:43One even changes into a burqa to disguise their identity.
04:52As the trader walks across the city, he is closely followed by different members of the gang.
05:01And when he gets back to his car, they close in on him.
05:11He had placed the jewellery in a boot.
05:13And as he was getting into his car, a mail approached him and dropped a quantity of coins and notes on the floor.
05:22And whilst being distracted, members of this group then removed the suitcases from the back of the vehicle.
05:31I made their getaway.
05:34The CCTV clearly showed the trader had been deliberately targeted and it gave them their first vital lead.
05:43The vehicles the suspects were using was a Vauxhall Mareva and a Vauxhall Astra.
05:48Police ran checks on those number plates and found they had been flagged after some suspicious activity at a trade fair in Birmingham one week earlier.
05:58Jewellery trade fairs are invitation only.
06:02They have a very strict security procedures in place for security guards so that people can't infiltrate it.
06:08And that's because there's very valuable items there.
06:11During the event, the security team were put on high alert when someone tried to steal some lanyards.
06:18Sarah, who now works for an industry anti-crime initiative called Safer Gems, got her team to review the CCTV.
06:30Wang said, I recognise the way that this gang is operating, the clothing that they're wearing and their appearances.
06:36They look like a South American organised crime group.
06:39Foreign organised crime groups are very proficient at doing this and everybody will have their particular role.
06:47So they're very professional in how they commit those offences in order not to be caught by the police.
06:53The footage and intelligence were passed over to the flying squad to identify who the gang were.
07:00This vehicle is just parked and these two people have just arrived at the trade fair event.
07:08This male then puts on a hat and he's putting in a earpiece.
07:16And he is making his way to the event.
07:21This male actually enters the event and goes to the table and grabs lanyards and tries to enter without being registered.
07:33And he's challenged by security and pretends that he doesn't speak English and leaves the venue with the lanyards.
07:42And then he makes his way back towards the car park where he secretes a number of the lanyards that are required to get into the jewellery fair.
07:53The security are concerned and they start to make a sweep of the car park.
07:59He is aware that he's being followed and he quickly gets into the vehicle.
08:06The windows are blacked out so you can't see into the back seat of the vehicle and they're unable to find him.
08:15The security are on high alert at this stage.
08:22Their jewellery trade has been infiltrated and they look back at the CCTV and they can see that the lanyards have been left under this vehicle.
08:34And this is the first incident of the day that raises the concerns.
08:40CCTV shows the suspicious man driving off, but he's soon replaced by another.
08:47Approximately 30 minutes later, a male is acting suspiciously within the hotel.
08:54He is challenged by the same security team and he makes off.
09:00Within the hour, a third person also raises suspicions.
09:04This man, who parks up close to the trade fair, is driving the silver Astra that was used in the theft from the jewellery trader in Glasgow.
09:13A male exits and makes his way towards the hotel.
09:21And immediately the security team are on high alert.
09:25The male realises he's being watched by security.
09:30He's spooked, so he actually leaves the event.
09:34The security team come out to speak with him, but he doesn't look back.
09:41It's at this stage that the security team make the hard decision to close the event.
09:48It seemed security may have thwarted a potential theft, but police were convinced the gang had got away with something more valuable.
09:57The Glasgow victim had been at the trade fair event eight days prior in Birmingham.
10:04So it was clear that their intentions at the trade fair was to scout for victims who make up later targets.
10:13Just two weeks later, another jewellery broker left London after attending a similar fair.
10:22He parked his vehicle at a service station.
10:25He left his jewellery valued around £100,000 within his vehicle, during which time his car was broken into and the jewellery was stolen.
10:34The car the suspects used was recovered by police in Luton six days later.
10:41We found that the victims' suitcases and bags were still in the vehicle, but the rings had been taken.
10:48Inside that bag we had found a receipt from a store in Enfield.
10:53Using the time and date on the receipt, police cross-checked this against CCTV from the area.
11:00This led them to a group of suspects.
11:03It was clear when we were watching the CCTV and following this group that they were looking for potential victims who were in the town centre.
11:11And they were looking at sort of bank premises.
11:14We then started to look back at historic crimes, which they may have committed.
11:21I was able to identify this group was in excess of 30 to 40 people.
11:26And they were looking at customers withdrawing large sums of cash.
11:30Detectives realised this gang wasn't just targeting high-value jewellery, but people like Andrea and her partner.
11:39I just, just couldn't believe that someone could do that to you.
11:49I'd say for a good year after that, it was just, just such an anxious...
11:58It was just an anxious feeling every day.
12:03It was just so upsetting.
12:09This highly organised crime group were stealing hundreds of thousands of pounds from innocent people across the country.
12:16And the Flying Squad needed to catch them before they struck again.
12:25Gangs from the world of illicit crime often target more than just cash and jewellery.
12:30Rare and high-value items of any description may steal their attention.
12:352017, and police in North London had been called out to an extraordinary job.
12:53Rare books is not something that comes across your desk very often.
12:57I knew straight away that whoever had done this was very audacious and clearly quite professional.
13:06200 rare and valuable books had been stolen from a customs warehouse in Feltham, London.
13:20The skylight had a massive hole in it and there was rainwater even dripping through it.
13:29So I was sort of presented with a puddle on the floor and then sort of looking up at the ceiling to see these holes.
13:37The thieves had broken in through the roof and abseiled into the building like a scene from a heist movie.
13:49Once I'd spoken to the owners of the warehouse, it became clear that actually these weren't just old books.
13:54They were manuscripts, scrolls.
13:57I knew I had a challenge straight away because of the skill set that this gang or organised crime group clearly had.
14:06Forensics got to work, sending off a DNA sample taken from a ladder rung,
14:12while DC Ward began to find out more about the history of the stolen items.
14:17He contacted book expert Adrian Edwards at the British Library.
14:21I don't think anyone ever imagined that such a large number of books would be stolen in this way.
14:28We could see that they were generally high status items that are very collectible, 80% of them dated from before 1800.
14:38And in a few cases we could tell that the specific copies were obviously in nice bindings, expensive bindings.
14:46They were valued at £2.5 million.
14:52Antiquarian books have a monetary value as well as a cultural and research value.
14:58So when they disappear and there's this fear we will never see them again, there's a great sense of loss.
15:04The books were part of a shipment headed to San Francisco for a trade fair.
15:09More than 50 belonged to antiquarian book dealer Alessandro Medariquier.
15:14The first reaction was an absolute shock because losing almost your entire stock in a heist like this,
15:26it was absolutely difficult to survive.
15:30DC Ward was determined to reunite these remarkable books with their owners.
15:35But the DNA sample on the ladder rung didn't throw up a match and the CCTV was no help either.
15:41There was no night vision, so all I could see was flashlights and I could see that someone sort of holding a book and flipping through pages.
15:52So I was happy that this was the suspects that we were looking to identify.
15:56So DC Ward turned his attention to the surrounding area.
16:01Probably spent two days, full days of just walking, pounding the streets, trying to identify different cameras, angles.
16:10After trawling through hundreds of hours of CCTV, the gang's movements became clear.
16:18We found a vehicle pull up alongside the warehouse, a blue Renault Megane.
16:25And two figures got out of the vehicle.
16:30They walked along the front of the warehouse together.
16:34Stopped and then they walked back around.
16:37And then sort of disappeared down the building line.
16:40About half an hour later, you can see figures running across the roof.
16:50That vehicle's clearly involved.
16:56In the warehouse, the thieves took their time making sure they took only the rarest and most valuable books.
17:03They were there for about five hours.
17:06I think it was about 2am in the morning when I could see figures along the top of the warehouse again, doing little journeys to and from.
17:16This gang were hauling very heavy books up and down a rope and then along a long slippery roof.
17:25The gang loaded the books into the blue Megane and made their getaway.
17:29Police traced them through CCTV to Tooting in South London.
17:36A few days after the offence, we found that vehicle abandoned.
17:42And it had basically been completely bleached.
17:46Destroying most of the DNA and fingerprint evidence that we may have been able to retrieve.
17:51The car was insured by a Romanian national called Narcis Popescu.
17:56The team started to trace his movements during the heist.
18:01From the insurance details, I was able to obtain the telephone number for the driver.
18:07And from the telephone records, I was able to track that phone.
18:12And on the night of the book offence, I was able to co-locate it with the Renault Megane to Feltham where the book theft took place.
18:19That phone also travelled to Luton, where it eventually flew out of the country on the 7th of February.
18:31So we knew that we were dealing with an organised crime group that were operating cross borders internationally.
18:41And Popescu wasn't travelling alone.
18:45He'd bought tickets for Daniel David, Victor Opariuk and Christian Ungarianu, a.k.a. Christy the Bruiser.
18:54We then had the names of what we believed were the gang.
18:58With the thieves holed up abroad, DC Ward faced a difficult international manhunt.
19:03Then, out of the blue, he got a call that was to change everything.
19:11I had a phone call from Detective Chief Superintendent Tiberius Minea of the Romanian National Police.
19:19The Romanian authorities had received a tip-off about the heist.
19:23He basically gave me some names, a couple of phone numbers that I'd already identified.
19:30And so I knew it was important that we started to work together.
19:34DC Ward shared the DNA sample found at the crime scene.
19:38They ran that against their systems.
19:41And got a match to Daniel David, proving he'd been at the warehouse that night.
19:46He was a very well-known professional burglar who was known for his sort of acrobatic strength, scaling up walls and breaking into warehouses.
19:57And he was already known by the Romanian National Police for those types of crimes.
20:02DC Ward was confident he had found his gang of acrobatic thieves.
20:08But the whereabouts of the books was still a mystery.
20:11The main objective of the operation was to recover the books because they were culturally priceless.
20:19And if they were lost or destroyed, they'd be lost to the world.
20:24So the police needed to be patient.
20:28For over a year and a half, the Specialist Crime South Unit, alongside the Romanian National Police and the Italian Carabinieri, ran a major surveillance operation.
20:39It revealed a sophisticated, organised crime group which had struck multiple times across Europe.
20:47They would fly individuals from Romania to the UK, house them, conduct reconnaissance on warehouses and then conduct offences.
20:59They were targeting the whole country, not over-saturating a particular area where police may be able to link the crimes together.
21:11Police identified at least 13 key suspects involved in the gang's crime spree, each with a distinct role.
21:19David and Opariuk were the thieves on the ground, while Popescu served as the gang's travel agent, booking plane tickets and leasing housing.
21:31Christy the Bruiser provided muscle.
21:33With the scale of the criminal operation now apparent, the forces could no longer afford to wait to find the books.
21:44It was taken as a tactical decision to have a coordinated strike day where we would search 50 addresses across three countries in the hope that we would recover the books.
21:57In October 2020, all 13 gang members were convicted for their crimes and given prison sentences ranging from two to six years.
22:10The whereabouts of the stolen books was revealed by one of the gang members.
22:15It was a pinch yourself moment. I couldn't, I couldn't believe it that all that work had eventually paid off.
22:28The rare and fragile books were found buried under concrete slabs in the garage of a house in the Romanian countryside and soon reunited with their owners.
22:40It was great, great emotion to see again these books. They haven't suffered a lot during the last three years.
22:54One of the victims, he jumped up, said tonight we drink like lions.
22:59With one international gang locked up, the Flying Squad have a lead on the criminal group they've been hunting.
23:07This gang have orchestrated a series of distraction thefts across the UK, targeting individuals carrying large sums of cash and expensive jewellery.
23:17One of them vehicles had been stopped in the London area and two males had been arrested from that vehicle for immigration matters.
23:24Police seized their phones and examined their contacts.
23:28I was then able to identify at least seven other individuals whose numbers had been at the Birmingham event on the 10th of September.
23:38We weren't able to identify owners or users of six of those numbers, but we were able to identify one number belonging to a male named Hugo Salgado.
23:49Salgado had previously given his details to police in Kent when he was questioned about another attempted theft.
24:05This was a bit of a breakthrough and a bit of a gold mine.
24:08He was able to then look at crimes he had previously committed and it also gave us an opportunity to look at him proactively and to work out who he may be now working with.
24:16Putting a name to the face confirmed Salgado was one of the group responsible for the distraction theft of £15,000 from the car park in Essex.
24:28A surveillance operation was mounted to track Salgado's movements and to locate the rest of the gang.
24:34They would meet with other members of the group on a daily basis.
24:39They would then disperse and make their way to town centres, city centres across London and across the UK.
24:47They would be coming up in separate vehicles and not necessarily moving together as one.
24:51From there they would then operate and commit their crimes and we had to be aware that they could be watching us so we had to adapt our surveillance to not get caught basically.
25:04Salgado looked to be in charge of this group.
25:10This group was mainly South American, predominantly from Colombia.
25:14They were coming into the UK using a number of alias details.
25:18They would have several identities.
25:21This group was very difficult to deal with.
25:23We didn't know where they were living.
25:24We didn't know their true identities.
25:27Everything they did was off radar.
25:30It was one of the most challenging surveillance deployments we have done.
25:40The number of crimes started to become quite large across the whole of England and Scotland.
25:47This was a mammoth task ourselves to sort of piece together and build a conspiracy case against this group.
25:59In March 2024, a surveillance team was watching Hugo Salgado and other members of the gang when they travelled to Hatton Garden in London, the centre of the UK's diamond trade.
26:12A trader was seen to leave one of the premises and he approached a taxi.
26:18He put his suitcases in the back and then we watched the group throwing money on the floor around the taxi.
26:24This was an attempt by the group to then try and steal the traders' suitcases.
26:30This attempt was only foiled by the taxi driver who saw one of the male suspects try and get into the back of the taxi.
26:37And he challenged him as he approached the door.
26:41The trader then realised what was happening, got into his taxi and left the scene.
26:47Had this theft been successful, they would have got away with £4 million worth of jewellery.
26:53By trawling hundreds of hours of CCTV footage, conducting a vast amount of digital forensic work and running a 24 hour a day surveillance operation across the UK, police finally had enough evidence to make their move.
27:11So on the 1st of May, we started our arrest phase and we arrested Hugo Salgado, Alberto Sanchez, Mayeli Castellanos and Jose Gerardo Barrero.
27:22Within the weeks after, we arrested Miguel Ramirez, Jamie Gutierrez, Carlos Salazar and Jose Talanik.
27:30We're under arrest.
27:31Thank you for conspiracy to steal.
27:38All eight were charged with participating in an organised crime group and for conspiracy to steal.
27:46In total, they will serve over 32 years behind bars.
27:50They had stolen in excess of £1 million worth of cash and jewellery and have made two attempts to steal £5 million worth of jewellery.
27:57The arrest and convictions of these individuals has made a significant impact and disruption to their organised crime group.
28:05They are no longer now able to operate on a daily basis committing crimes, which will mean a lot less victims on the streets.
