00:00En Ask This Old House,
00:07our experts travel across the country
00:09to answer questions about your house.
00:17Today, we learn about the dangers of decibels
00:21and the importance of hearing protection
00:22when working with tools.
00:25We got some peaks up above 120 decibels.
00:28Then, it's a team effort
00:30when Richard, Heath, and Nathan
00:31help a couple relocate their laundry
00:33from the basement to the first floor.
00:36We'll be able to dock right onto that.
00:38I'm going to push to you.
00:39Okay.
00:40There we go.
00:41On Ask This Old House.
00:50Steve, nice to meet you.
00:51Hi, Kevin. Nice to meet you.
00:52Yeah, thanks for coming to our little workshop here.
00:54Not often we have a doctor in the house,
00:56but in this case, it's perfect.
00:57I like the doctor of audiology
00:58because we are exposed to loud noises
01:00all of the time on the job site.
01:03What are the effects?
01:04How does it work?
01:04What's going on?
01:05Yeah, so there are many different types
01:07of hearing losses and causes of hearing loss.
01:09But like you said, what we're talking about here
01:10is what's known as sound-induced hearing loss
01:13and more specifically, sound-induced hearing disorders.
01:16And I make that distinction
01:17because unfortunately with hazardous sound exposure,
01:20it's generally a package deal
01:22where you don't just get hearing loss.
01:24Not that that's trivial
01:26or something that you can shrug off,
01:28but we also get other issues
01:29such as tinnitus or tinnitus,
01:30which is a ringing or buzzing noise
01:32that generates inside our head,
01:34not from the world.
01:35I know it well.
01:36I have it too.
01:38But what's actually causing the injury
01:39is we have these specialized cells inside of our ears.
01:43And there's around 15,000 of them per ear.
01:45And that's all we get.
01:46They do not repair themselves.
01:48They do not heal.
01:49And as of right now,
01:49we don't have any pharmaceutical or medication
01:52that can help repair those cells.
01:54They're working on it, but we're not there yet.
01:57All right, so let's talk about the damage
01:59because not all noises are the same, right?
02:00They're not all as bad or as good as other noises.
02:03Very true, and that's one of the things
02:05that makes this concept of just sound exposure difficult
02:09because hazardous music exposure
02:12is a little bit different than hazardous
02:13like construction or tool sounds.
02:15And even within, you know, power tools,
02:18there are differences between a table saw and a hammer.
02:20Right, and you measure sound by?
02:24So we use decibel,
02:25or that's the unit of measure for sound.
02:28And the range of loudnesses that we can perceive
02:31is something that's difficult to wrap your head around.
02:34So we use a decibel scale
02:36to take this very broad range
02:38and condense it into roughly a 0 to 120 decibel scale.
02:42So 0 dB SPL is generally regarded
02:46as the threshold of hearing.
02:48So the softest sound most people can hear
02:50before we damage our ears.
02:52And that scale goes up to around 120, 130 decibels,
02:56and that's known as the threshold of pain.
02:57Oh, interesting.
02:58Now, NIOSH, which is the National Institute
03:01for Occupational Safety and Health,
03:02and they're the ones that do all of the research
03:05around occupational noise exposure,
03:07they would say you have 15 minutes,
03:09only 15 minutes,
03:11before you have fully exhausted your system.
03:13That's a big difference,
03:15and it's that 15-point change from 85 to 100.
03:18Absolutely.
03:19Before we get into hearing protection,
03:20is there a way that you can demonstrate to us
03:24what the levels are for different tools?
03:26Because we don't just use something like this.
03:28You know, we use all types of tools.
03:30And I'm just wondering, you know,
03:32who are the big offenders?
03:34Sure.
03:34So the easiest way to do this
03:36is with a sound level meter.
03:38And fortunately, nowadays,
03:39everyone has, I guess, the power
03:41to have a sound level meter
03:42because there are free apps for your phone.
03:44Oh, really?
03:45So we can use the NIOSH SLM app,
03:47which comes from the National Institute
03:48for Occupational Safety and Health.
03:50And it's a very educational app.
03:52It works well with iOS,
03:53and we can use that to get a rough sense
03:55of all the tools around us.
03:57It's, of course, not as accurate
03:58as a scientific model,
04:00but it's something we all have access to.
04:02Well, if you've got the phone with the app,
04:03we've got the tools.
04:04I do.
04:04So break that out.
04:05I'll start grabbing some stuff.
04:07Let's see what we should start with.
04:10All right.
04:10So let's take a listen to a miter saw.
04:12Okay.
04:13And why are you all the way up there?
04:15I'm just trying to get it closer to my ears
04:16since that's where we're hearing.
04:17It's a good place to measure.
04:18Okay.
04:19So let's see what we got.
04:28How'd we do?
04:29So some measurements over 100 decibels.
04:31Really?
04:32Yeah.
04:33Damage.
04:34Yeah.
04:35Well, around 15 minutes is what you would have
04:37exposed to sounds like that
04:38before you hit your daily dose.
04:40Now let's try a drill.
04:42You know, I know how loud the impact drivers are,
04:45but just a regular drill driver,
04:46I'm curious to see what you get.
04:48So we're around 85, 86 decibels.
04:54So use it for an entire day.
04:56You've used up your allotment.
04:58Right.
04:58Which we're generally not going to be drilling the whole day,
05:01but that combined with everything else,
05:03it could definitely add up.
05:04So even a hammer is louder than you might think.
05:06Let's find out.
05:07Ready?
05:07Yeah, so we got some peaks up above 120 decibels.
05:17And again, that's at a point
05:18where you should really never be exposed to that sound.
05:22And it's worth noting that this is just a free app.
05:24It's a cell phone.
05:25It's not perfectly accurate,
05:26but it does go to show how loud something
05:29is seemingly trivial as a hammer is.
05:32That's the most frightening thing
05:34because I often think of hearing damage from that.
05:38I rarely am actually wearing hearing protection
05:40just to hammer away.
05:42Absolutely.
05:42So that's a disappointing number to see.
05:44Yeah.
05:44I think we've all said that like,
05:45oh, I'm just hammering a nail.
05:46I don't need to wear hearing protection.
05:48But in reality, you do
05:49because that sudden burst of energy
05:51can also be even more hazardous
05:53than a loud continuous sound.
05:55So let's talk about hearing protection.
05:57A lot of different kinds out there.
05:58You got preferences?
05:59Sure.
06:00Well, nowadays,
06:01there are many fantastic earplugs that we can use
06:04and it kind of comes down to
06:05what you're using them for
06:06and then what fits your ears.
06:08So over the ear or earmuff style
06:11hearing protection like this works very well
06:13because it tends to offer more consistent sound protection.
06:16And even ones like this
06:17offer an active element to the noise reduction
06:20so you can still hear people speak
06:22and then they will drop the volume
06:24when a loud sound occurs.
06:25It's a really nice feature.
06:26Yeah.
06:27Okay.
06:27Our typical foam earplugs,
06:29they work very well.
06:30The one difficulty with them
06:32is people tend to get them in their ears improperly.
06:35And that's what you'll see
06:36where they're sticking in doing almost nothing.
06:38Just hanging out.
06:39That's right.
06:39Not much.
06:40So in terms of like technical efficacy,
06:44are these similar if they were both worn properly?
06:48Yeah.
06:48So they have a similar noise reduction rating or NRR
06:51if worn properly.
06:53And you're doing it right now
06:54where you generally have to roll them down very thin,
06:57pull your ear back and up
06:58and insert it to the point
06:59where you almost don't even see the earplugs sticking out.
07:02Right.
07:03And then let it expand a little bit.
07:04Let it expand.
07:05But a lot of people don't do that
07:06or they don't do it for very long.
07:08That's right.
07:09And one other issue with earplugs like that
07:11is they're passive.
07:13So they're going to bring down all sounds equally.
07:16And then if you go to communicate with someone,
07:18ask someone for a drink at the bar
07:20or someone speaks to you,
07:21you can't hear them
07:22so you tend to take them out.
07:23So that's where newer hearing protection
07:24like some advanced earbuds
07:26and the earmuffs that we talked about
07:29that offer an active element
07:30where you can still hear someone speak
07:32and then they reduce the volume when it occurs.
07:35So the things that we're using
07:36to listen to our podcasts and our music,
07:38you're saying could be used effectively in the workshop.
07:41Actually, yes.
07:42Yeah, I've used it in the workshop.
07:44I've used it at very loud rock concerts
07:45and walked away without any ringing, buzzing
07:47or fuzziness in my ears.
07:49And I don't recognize this one.
07:51What's going on there?
07:52So this is just a case.
07:53You know, there's so many caveats with hearing protection
07:56and I tend to think the best earplug
07:57is the one you are actually going to wear.
07:59And since most people don't obsess
08:02over hearing like audiologists do,
08:03it's very easy to leave them at home
08:06while you're going out.
08:07So the way to mitigate that
08:08and make sure that you always are ready
08:10to protect your ears
08:11is to just get a metal keychain carrying case,
08:13put your $20 to $40 earplugs in there
08:16and then you'll always have them with you
08:18whether you go to a festival,
08:19there's a band or a loud restaurant.
08:21So the best hearing protection
08:22is the hearing protection you have
08:23and the one you wear.
08:24That's right.
08:25Awesome.
08:26Well, thank you, doctor.
08:26We appreciate the info.
08:27Thanks for having me on the show.
08:28You got it.
08:32Hello there.
08:35Hello there.
08:36Nice to see you.
08:36Hi, I'm Jim and this is my wife, Michelle.
08:39How do you do?
08:39Richard, nice to see you.
08:40Hi, Richard.
08:40Thank you for coming.
08:41Glad to be here.
08:42You wrote us about aging in place,
08:44something that I'm starting to get used to.
08:46Aren't we all?
08:47Yeah, so we know that we're not getting any younger.
08:51I'm 70 years old
08:52and we want to eliminate the stares in our life.
08:55So we kind of live on this first floor.
08:58So you got the bedroom master,
09:00the primary bedroom already down here.
09:01Okay, for you guys.
09:03Yeah, they say that if you're going to,
09:04thinking about aging in place,
09:06that you do it when you can,
09:08not when you have to.
09:10And we don't have to right now
09:11and God willing,
09:13we won't have to for a long time.
09:15We started renovating the bathroom
09:17with that in mind,
09:18put in safety bars and things.
09:20Great.
09:21And then we thought about the laundry.
09:22Oh, because that was,
09:23the laundry's downstairs now?
09:24Down in the cellar.
09:25Okay.
09:26And we'd like to eliminate that
09:27if that's possible.
09:28You want to get rid of those stairs?
09:29Yeah.
09:29Yes.
09:30All right, so you're doing
09:31some of this work yourself?
09:32We did.
09:33A little bit.
09:33We're in mid, mid process.
09:35We got stuck.
09:36Yeah.
09:37Because we wanted to convert
09:39the bathroom closet, perhaps,
09:41into a laundry room.
09:42Okay.
09:42And that's beyond our level.
09:45Okay.
09:46Well, I think I came
09:46just in time then.
09:47Yes, you did.
09:48Let's check it out.
09:48All right.
09:50Okay, Richard,
09:50this is the bathroom.
09:52As you can see,
09:52we started our renovation.
09:54You did.
09:56We had a tub here
09:57and we knew that at some point
09:58we weren't going to be able
09:59to climb up
10:00and get in and out of it.
10:01So we took the tub out.
10:03So a nice low curb right here
10:04and that waterproofing material
10:06we use all the time.
10:07Perfect.
10:07And we had a sink
10:08that had a cabinet.
10:10Yep.
10:10And so if we were ever
10:11in a wheelchair...
10:12Yeah, look at that.
10:13So perfect.
10:13We'd be able to get underneath it.
10:14That's hung off the wall, great.
10:15Yep.
10:16And an ADA-compliant toilet.
10:18Right.
10:19Does that have the bidet seat, too?
10:20Yep, it does.
10:21And this was where the closet was.
10:23All right.
10:23And that's where our question was,
10:25can we put a washer and dryer
10:26in this closet?
10:28Well, you can probably physically
10:29find a way to stack it in here.
10:31You've got a drain line right here.
10:32That looks like you could
10:33tap into that for a trap.
10:35And there's hot and cold piping.
10:37You could tap into that.
10:38And then it looks like
10:39there's actually a space
10:40we can get the dryer vent
10:41to outside right there,
10:43right above the roof of the shower.
10:45That's great.
10:46So you're not too bad in my world,
10:48you know,
10:49but you're going to need
10:50electrical for the dryer
10:52and then your carpentry.
10:54You've got plenty of carpentry.
10:55You know, I have in my phone
10:57the rest of our team,
10:59you know, like Heath,
11:00the electrician,
11:01and Nathan, the carpenter.
11:03How about we call them
11:04and make this a whole team effort?
11:05That'd be wonderful.
11:06All right.
11:06I'd love it.
11:06Thank you.
11:07Let's get him on the phone.
11:08Let me see if they take my call.
11:10They have caller ID.
11:17All right.
11:17Every day is Christmas.
11:18Look who I found.
11:20The troops are here.
11:21How you doing?
11:22Heath, Nathan.
11:22Nice to meet you guys.
11:23Nice to meet you.
11:24Nathan, welcome.
11:24Nice to meet you.
11:25So glad you could come.
11:26Thanks for having us.
11:26So as I mentioned,
11:27we've got the bathrooms underway.
11:29We're trying to fight
11:30the washer and dryer in.
11:30The plumbing's pretty straightforward,
11:32but we need you guys.
11:33Yeah.
11:33So for me,
11:34the first thing I want to take a look at
11:35is the panel,
11:35see if we have physical space
11:37and what it's going to take
11:37to get the new circuits up there.
11:38I can show you that.
11:39All right.
11:39I'd like to look at the space given
11:41and see what we can do.
11:42I can hook you up.
11:42Okay.
11:43Lead on.
11:44All right.
11:44All right, Nathan.
11:46Welcome to the bathroom renovation.
11:48You guys are well on your way here.
11:49Yeah, we are.
11:50This looks great.
11:51Yeah.
11:51So we're talking about
11:52a washer-dryer unit, right?
11:53Yep.
11:54And it looks like this is the space
11:55that you want to put it.
11:56This is where we were hoping for, yeah.
11:57All right.
11:58So I'm sure you guys have already done it,
11:59but I'm going to get caught up
12:00and take some measurements here.
12:02We want to make sure
12:02that we have the proper clearance
12:03for the washer-dryer unit.
12:05It looks like we have plenty of space,
12:07but I'm thinking about the doors.
12:09There's a lot of doors going on here.
12:10I see your hinges mortised here.
12:12This door is going to open
12:13in front of the closet, right?
12:14Yeah.
12:15You could swap the hinges over here
12:17and change the swing of the door
12:18and open it into the left,
12:19but then you still have a door here
12:21to navigate.
12:22And then once you open that,
12:23you have the doors of the washer
12:24and the dryer to navigate, right?
12:26Yeah, right.
12:26So it's really tight with a basket.
12:28What's nice, though,
12:29is we can see the backside of this wall,
12:30all that real estate
12:31that leads out to the hallway.
12:34Hallway. Perfect.
12:35Oh, yes.
12:36Look at this.
12:37Oh, look at that.
12:39Probably fit,
12:40probably a 2-4,
12:456-6 that would match the existing.
12:47Get some new maple trim,
12:49blend everything.
12:49It would almost be like a paneled wall,
12:51really clean look.
12:52I see we do have a thermostat here
12:54to dance around,
12:54so Heath could probably move that for us.
12:56Excellent.
12:57All right.
12:58All right, Jim.
12:59So this is the service coming in.
13:01It looks like you got a new panel?
13:02Yes, we did.
13:03Okay.
13:04So new panel
13:05and 200-amp service?
13:08Yes.
13:09Okay.
13:09It looks like this was probably
13:11existing beforehand,
13:12seeing how you have space here.
13:13That was putting with the air conditioning.
13:15Got it.
13:15So that was there,
13:16so now we have plenty of room here
13:17to grow if we need to.
13:19Looks like we have our existing dryer circuit
13:21and our washers in here somewhere as well.
13:23Am I able to reuse those circuits
13:24for the new stuff upstairs,
13:25or are you thinking of keeping
13:26your washer-dryer in the basement?
13:27No, we're going to keep
13:28what we have down here.
13:29You're going to keep
13:30the machines downstairs?
13:31Yes.
13:31We're going to use it
13:32for large bulk items
13:33and things,
13:34so we don't want to drag
13:34that's actually not a bad idea.
13:36I see that more and more
13:36where that's an option.
13:38You can actually use this,
13:39especially down in the basement,
13:40come through the bulkhead,
13:41dirtier items if you had pets,
13:42anything heavy that you want
13:43to put down there,
13:44not dragged through
13:44the clean house upstairs.
13:46So that works out pretty well,
13:47especially for you.
13:48You have plenty of room to grow.
13:49So what we're going to do
13:50is duplicate the circuits
13:51you already have.
13:52We're going to put in a 20-amp,
13:53120-volt circuit upstairs
13:54for the washing machine,
13:56and this double-30,
13:57we're going to put in
13:58for the dryer as well.
13:58Those two will plug in
13:59for the new machines upstairs.
14:00That's great,
14:01so we can go ahead and do that.
14:02Let's go find Michelle and Nathan
14:04and we'll see what we have
14:04to do upstairs.
14:05Okay.
14:07All right, a little huddle up.
14:09What do we know?
14:10I think we found a good place
14:11for the washer-dry unit.
14:12We're going to come in
14:13through the hallway,
14:13put a door in.
14:15That's pretty cool.
14:15Yeah, right off the hallway.
14:16A lot of people just sort of
14:17jam it off behind that door.
14:19I think we can make it
14:20work off the hall,
14:20so it's going to be nice.
14:22Yeah, I like that idea.
14:23I like that idea a lot.
14:24The only thing we need to do
14:24is move the thermostat.
14:26I think we can handle that.
14:27We have a walk.
14:28I'll just cut the wire.
14:29He wouldn't be the first.
14:30That's right.
14:31We have a wide-open basement
14:33right below it,
14:33so it should be easy enough
14:34to pull down, relocate
14:35somewhere else in the hall,
14:36pull it up in a nice location,
14:38be done with it.
14:39And we have a new service,
14:40a new electrical panel,
14:41new 200-amp service,
14:43plenty of physical space
14:44for new breakers,
14:45so we can pull the lines over
14:46and come right up.
14:47And you can still keep
14:48the washer and dryer
14:49and stuff.
14:50Exactly, so we can leave
14:50the existing washer-dryer,
14:52add the new one.
14:53You can do laundry on the side.
14:55All right, well,
14:56if we're going to jam
14:57that washer in,
14:58I worry about those hoses
14:59over time.
15:00They're in a place
15:01you can't get at it,
15:01so we've got to think
15:02about how to just have
15:03some access to be able
15:04to turn that water off,
15:05so either valves down
15:07in the basement
15:07we can get at
15:08or an access panel
15:09so we can get in there.
15:10And I think then
15:11we could be fine, I think.
15:12I think it'll work.
15:12All right, so we ready?
15:14Ready.
15:14Put it in here, gang.
15:15You got the team.
15:16Let's go.
15:17Let's go.
15:17Great.
15:18Before I remove the thermostat,
15:20I want to go ahead
15:20and kill power
15:21to the boiler and its controls.
15:23All right, now that the boiler
15:24is off,
15:25I'm going to take
15:26the thermostat off.
15:28Next, I'll just take
15:28the wires out.
15:34And I'll get the backplate
15:35out of the way,
15:36and then I'll jump downstairs
15:37and pull the wires down.
15:39I'm going to get started
15:40inside the closet
15:41by removing this rock clad.
15:42Now we're going to get started
15:52in the hallway.
15:53I'm going to start
15:53by removing the trim,
15:56the baseboard,
15:57and then I'm going to get going
15:59on the rock clad.
16:00and then I'll be going to get started
16:13up.

17:48We're going to go with the flush thresholds so the washer and dryer can roll in nice and
17:52easy.
17:55Now I'm going to set the jamb for the door.
17:57I'm going to use some cedar shims to plummet and then I'm going to hang the door after.
18:01All right, we have a few things to fit into this wet wall.
18:21We've got, first of all, this washing machine valve box right here.
18:26That's going to mount into the wall and you can see it's got a single acting shutoff valve
18:30right here.
18:31I love that so you can take the pressure off the hoses.
18:33And it's got a place for the drain.
18:35So that's going to be right about there.
18:36And now we're going to drain.
18:38We're going to come off here with two inch and we're going to come over with a trap.
18:43And it has to be two inch nowadays for any standpipe.
18:46And then the hot and the cold will be right here.
18:49We're going to come over.
18:50We're going to come over and feed our washing machine valve.
18:53We're also going to tee off because in the future we have to put that shower valve in
18:58that the installers will do over here.
18:59So we'll leave this capped off.
19:01We also have the dryer vet that has to fit into this very same wall.
19:04So you have to be sensitive to that.
19:06And then he's got to put his electrical somewhere here and it all has to fit.
19:10Starts by turning off the water.
19:20Starts by turning off the water.
19:50I got it, Nathan.
19:51Good.
20:14So this is this interesting part here.
20:17It's a telescoping vent.
20:19And we got the issue of the shower valve right here.
20:21So this fits narrow.
20:22And now we get it to right here.
20:24And I know that the dryer vent tapping on the back of the dryer is at 40 inches.
20:29Oh, perfect.
20:30So look at that.
20:30So we'll be able to dock right onto that.
20:32And I'm going to push to you.
20:34Okay.
20:35There we go.
20:36Keep swinging.
20:36Keep swinging.
20:37You got door hinges over here.
20:39Keep coming.
20:55Keep coming.
20:56Hold.
20:57Hold.
20:59I'll tell you, Jim.
21:00Look at the match that Nathan did.
21:01That really makes it just disappear in this hallway, doesn't it?
21:04They did, yeah, did beautiful, beautiful work.
21:07I love the unit.
21:08You picked this baby out, right?
21:09Because I've had stackables before, you know, the bottom and the top unit.
21:13But it turns out that the controls are like way up there and way down here.
21:16This is nice in the middle.
21:17It's very convenient because, you know, Richard, as we get older, we're not going to get any
21:21taller and we wouldn't want to be reaching way up there for the controls.
21:24Am I going to shrink?
21:25Yes.
21:25Oh, no.
21:26We all are.
21:27I felt so tall.
21:28All right.
21:29I heard you're the laundry guy.
21:30I am.
21:31Well, this thing, I've been sweating for a couple of days with this, so I'm going to
21:33leave it with you.
21:35Okay?
21:35All right.
21:36Let's go find the boys.
21:37Okay.
21:39But it all worked out.
21:40It did.
21:41Oh, Michelle.
21:42You married a pro at laundry.
21:44He's already got a white load going.
21:46He's unreal.
21:47He's good.
21:47He's really good.
21:48He is.
21:48He is.
21:49Well, we hope you guys enjoy this thing.
21:50It's been really fun.
21:51Thank you.
21:51We did.
21:52And we really appreciate all, every piece of everything you guys did.
21:57It's a great project.
21:58Thank you.
21:58The boys did it.
21:59Hold on.
21:59A little bit of homework.
22:00Okay.
22:00Let's not rush this.
22:01So you guys are going to finish the bathroom.
22:03A little access panel on the side there so you can do the shutoffs.
22:05Please also label any of the shutoffs so if you have guests, they know.
22:09Staining.
22:09A little bit of staining to finish everything up.
22:11Just a new doorknob that matches the existing.
22:13Okay.
22:14All right.
22:14Got it.
22:15And thank you guys so much for being great fans.
22:16and writing in for this project.
22:18That was wonderful.
22:19Happy to come and do it.
