Looming SNAP cuts change Halloween trick-or-treat offerings

People across the U.S. preparing to give out shelf-stable foods to trick-or-treaters this year to help fill the void left by looming cuts to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP, which helps about one in eight Americans buy groceries.

00:27They were picking up rubbish.

00:28Peter was tying some rubbish on the front of the quad bike

00:30to take back to the bins.

00:31And Felicity saw a bottle floating around in the shoreline

00:36and she picked it up and said,

00:37oh, Dad, this bottle's pretty cool.

00:39It's very thick glass and it's got messages in it.

00:42We'd better take it home.

00:44That'll be what, mantle?

00:46Yeah.

00:47On the windowsill.

00:49Oh, wow, that's fantastic.

00:51So when we got the bottle home,

00:53it had this little tiny cork in it, which has survived.

00:57It must have been tucked up in the sand dunes now, we believe,

01:00because there was no growth on the bottle from the ocean

01:03and also the words were protected.

01:06So when we got it home,

01:07I thought we would put a hole in the cork

01:10and then turn it upside down so that we could drain the water out.

01:13But luckily, when I put the skewer very carefully into the cork,

01:17the whole cork came out.

01:18So then we sat it on the windowsill for a couple of days to dry a bit

01:22and I could see one of the letters was dry enough for me to attempt to get it out,

01:26never dreaming that we'd be able to read words.

01:29And so I stuck a pair of surgical tweezers down inside and twisted

01:33and twisted and twisted until it was thin enough to pull up through the neck.

01:37And then we put the rolled up letter on the windowsill for another day to dry

01:42because it was damp.

01:43And when we opened it up,

01:45we were just...

01:47We could not believe that the writing was so clear from...

01:52So it's very emotional,

02:04but we're also very excited that we found it,

02:07that a local family found it

02:09because we've made it into something really special for the families.

02:13One of the great nephews is coming over to Esperance to meet us

02:18and he was going to pick up his letter in person,

02:21but he's decided that might take a bit long.

02:23So we're going to post it to him.
