00:112024 VW Passat variant. The ninth and final member of this long-standing and popular

00:18family station wagon generation impresses with a luxury flair in the midsize class.

00:24With a total of eight different combustion engines and two new plug-in hybrids,

00:28Volkswagen is once again setting standards in performance and efficiency.

00:33In this article, we take you on a detailed test drive and provide all the relevant information,

00:39data, and prices for the new VW Passat variant. The VW Passat remains a true global bestseller and,

00:48with over 34 million units sold worldwide, is one of Volkswagen's most successful models,

00:53along with the Tiguan and Polo. Since 2022, the Passat has been offered exclusively as a station

01:00wagon in Europe and continues to enjoy great popularity there. In Germany, the Passat variant

01:06was the leader in the midsize class in 2023, with almost 46,000 new registrations.

01:13The secret to the Passat variant's success lies in its versatility.

01:17It is both a practical company car and a reliable all-rounder for the family.

01:24A completely newly developed Passat variant will be available in stores starting at €40,000.

01:31The editorial team already had the opportunity to test it with the engines available at market launch.

01:37The body of the new Passat variant has been redesigned, with the drag coefficient reduced

01:43from 0.31 to 0.25. This improves aerodynamics and significantly increases fuel efficiency.

01:52With a current length of 4.90 meters, the Passat variant has grown by 15 centimeters.

02:00The wheelbase has been extended to 2.8 meters, which has a positive effect on the trunk volume.

02:05Volkswagen specifies 690L in the standard configuration, and even 1920L with the rear seats folded down.

02:49while the lever must be pushed sideways to switch to park mode.

02:52The windshield wiper functions are now accessible on the left via the turn signal stock,

02:59and the light switches are located at the bottom of the dashboard.

03:03The center console has been completely redesigned and now serves as a practical storage area

03:09with various compartments for cell phones, drinks, keys, and other everyday items.

03:14Thanks to the exclusive automatic dual-clutch transmission,

03:19storage space is always reserved, as there is no longer a manual gearshift lever.

03:25A total of 8 different engines are available for the new Passat,

03:29including gasoline, diesel, and two new plug-in hybrids.

03:32The base engine is the 1.5 ETSI with 110 kW and 150 hp,

03:40equipped with a 48-volt hybrid system.

03:43This engine replaces the previously used 1.5 TSI without hybridization.

03:49The integrated belt starter generator with 15 kW of power and 25 Nm of torque

03:55acts as an electric power booster, supporting the drive especially at low engine speeds.

04:02At the same time, the mild hybrid system helps minimize fuel consumption

04:07by allowing the gasoline engine to be completely switched off,

04:10enabling coasting and electric driving for short periods.

04:16Another important component for fuel savings is ACT plus selective cylinder deactivation.

04:23In situations with low power requirements,

04:25the four-cylinder engine operates with only two active combustion chambers,

04:30increasing efficiency in the active cylinders while the passive cylinders run with virtually no loss of power.

04:37This proven principle, used in other Volkswagen Group models,

04:41also functions extremely reliably in the new Passat variant

04:45and ensures noticeably quiet and efficient driving.

04:50The developers focus particularly on increasing comfort for Passat customers.

04:55The new Passat is not only larger,

05:01but also has better sound insulation and a further developed chassis

05:04that guarantees a relaxed and confident driving experience.

05:09The DSG transmission operates smoothly and efficiently in most driving modes.

05:15Only in sport mode does it deliver more dynamic and somewhat hectic characteristics.

05:19In addition to the base engine,

05:21there are two conventional turbo gasoline engines and three turbo diesels,

05:25which have already been successfully used in other Volkswagen models.

05:29These engines offer a power range from 90 kW and 120 hp for the 2.0 TDI

05:35up to 195 kW and 265 hp for the 20 TSI force motion.

05:42Particularly noteworthy are the powerful diesel units,

05:45which enable both powerful acceleration and relaxed cruising.

05:48The 195 kW TSI and the 142 kW TDI are available as standard

05:56with V-motion permanent all-wheel drive,

05:59enabling large trailer loads of up to 2,200 kg,

06:03while the ETSI can tow up to 1,600 kg.

06:08A new highlight in the Passat variants engine range are the two plug-in hybrids,

06:13with system outputs of 150 kW and 204 hp and 200 kW and 272 hp, respectively.

06:23Drivers of these models can enjoy impressive system torque of 350 to 400 Nm.

06:29Although these models have not yet been tested and are not expected to be available until the end of the year,

06:39they promise an impressive electric range of 100 km thanks to a new battery with a net energy content of 19.7 kWh,

06:47compared to the previous 10.4 kWh.

06:50This enables most daily journeys to be completed with zero local emissions.

07:04Another advantage of the plug-in hybrid is the ability to charge it at an 11 kW charger or at a DC fast charging station,

07:11which can draw up to 50 kW of power.

07:16A nearly completely discharged battery can be recharged to 80% in 23 minutes,

07:22significantly reducing charging times and increasing everyday flexibility.

07:28The redesigned central display is another major advance.

07:34A 12.9-inch screen is standard,

07:36while a 15-inch display the size of a full-size tablet is available at an additional cost.

07:44The screen resolution and responsiveness are first class,

07:48and the two menu bars at the top and bottom of the display enable intuitive operation.

07:54The bottom bar houses the climate control unit with air distribution,

07:58fan,

07:59and seat heating settings,

08:00while the top bar offers up to five individually configurable menu items,

08:04such as radio,

08:06telephone,

08:07navigation,

08:08assistance systems,

08:09or automated parking.

08:12The infotainment volume controls are now illuminated even in the dark,

08:16and there is speculation that the popular rotary controls could soon make a return.

08:22Particularly noteworthy in terms of everyday comfort is the pleasantly low-loading sill at the rear of the Passat,

08:27which makes loading and unloading the trunk easier,

08:30whether with crates of drinks or shopping.

08:32The new VW Passat variant is available from €3,995 with the entry-level 150-hp ETSI petrol engine,

08:41while the variant with the 150-hp diesel engine is available in the business variant from €48,495.

08:49The models are configurable in four different equipment versions,

08:53Passat,

08:54Business,

08:55Elegance,

08:55and Airline,

08:56which also differ slightly in appearance.

08:58Even the basic Passat trim offers numerous features such as the new displays,

09:04the CarTox warning system,

09:06AppConnect wireless for the integration of Apple and Android devices,

09:10automatic climate control,

09:11black roof rails,

09:12and numerous assistance systems.

09:15LED headlights and LED taillights are also standard,

09:19giving the vehicle a modern and elegant look.

09:21Volkswagen has now released the prices of additional models that are already available for pre-order.

09:29At the same time,

09:30the Škoda Superb,

09:31the sister model to the VW Passat,

09:34goes on sale.

09:36Both models share largely identical technology and dimensions

09:39and are manufactured in a joint factory in Bratislava, Slovakia.

09:43The Škoda Superb from Lada Bolslov and the VW Passat from Emden also roll off the production line there.

09:53has been manufactured at the Emden plant since August,
