00:00Welcome to the new video from the Car Magazine Tuning Blog.
00:14Today, we're talking about the Maruti Suzuki Zera, a budget sedan that retails for around $8,000 in India.
00:22But the steal isn't just the price, it's the impressive safety rating that this vehicle has achieved.
00:28A full 5 stars in the GlobalCap crash test.
00:32An impressive result, especially for a vehicle in this price range.
00:37In India, one of the last major markets for budget cars, the Zera is considered an econobox, like other small sedans that are designed for everyday use and are supposed to cover basic transportation needs.
00:50So, what does that mean in detail?
00:52When manufacturing budget vehicles, safety is usually often compromised in order to keep costs down, usually at the expense of occupant safety.
01:04Previously, other models from Maruti Suzuki have performed poorly in crash tests, such as the Suzuki Boleno, which received zero stars in the 2021 Latin NC Cap crash test,
01:14or the smaller Swift, which only managed one star in the GlobalNP.
01:20But with the new Zera, Maruti Suzuki is showing that even an affordable vehicle can meet high safety standards.
01:27In fact, Maruti Suzuki voluntarily provided examples of the Zera for crash tests.
01:33Such was the trust in its design.
01:34The standard Zera is already equipped with six airbags, ESP, Hillstart Assist and Pedestrian Protection.
01:43A remarkable level of safety that is quite exceptional in a vehicle under $1,000.
01:50These safety features are often found in more expensive vehicles.
01:54However, the Zera is a true example of how safety does not have to be expensive.
01:58In comparison, the cheapest vehicle in the US, the Nissan Versa, costs around $18,000, more than double the starting price of the Zera.
02:12Even in the highest trim level, the Zera only costs around $1,000, despite features that you would expect to find in higher-priced vehicles,
02:19such as LED headlights, a 360-degree camera system, automatic climate control and a wireless charger.
02:28The multimedia equipment includes a 9-inch touchscreen with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.
02:35Comfort and technology are by no means neglected here.
02:40The five-seater Zera is powered by a 1.2-liter petrol engine with an output of 80 horsepower and a torque of 113 newton-meters.
02:48Alternatively, there is a version that runs on compressed natural gas, CNG, and has a slightly lower output of 69 horsepower and a torque of around 102 newton-meters.
03:01Power is transmitted via a 5-speed manual transmission or an automated manual transmission.
03:11The basic version of the Zera weighs just 920 kilograms and is equipped with 14-inch steel rims.
