01:18As many of you know, we have been the best kept secret in the auto industry for the last
01:23three years, until about two weeks ago when a spy shot emerged and we quickly realized
01:32how much people care about what we've been up to.
01:38I couldn't help myself.
01:40Reading some of the comments deep in Reddit and other places, there were a number of fun
01:45speculations.
01:47Is this Ford Skunk Works project?
01:50Or something Rivian maybe hasn't announced yet?
01:53Or my personal favorite, Slate is just an anagram for Tesla.
02:04I am here to tell you, it is none of those things.
02:11Let me throw out a few statistics.
02:1470% of Americans make $100,000 or less per year.
02:22The math pencils out that in a responsible budget, one should spend $400 or less on their
02:29car payment per month.
02:33The average new car payment today, $742.
02:41And average used cars are about $525 per month.
02:47The industry has been so focused on autonomy and technology in the vehicle, it's driven prices
02:55to a place that most Americans simply can't afford.
03:01The industry believes that adding value to a vehicle is adding a whole bunch of content
03:06and options and more content and more options and packages and more content.
03:11It's driven prices and complexity up to a point that 70% of new cars have reoccurring warranty
03:19issues related to technology.
03:22The industry has abandoned the majority of Americans.
03:27As all of this is happening, being able to work on your own vehicle, being able to accessorize
03:34and customize your car are things of the past.
03:39But we're here to change that.
03:41Let's take a look.
03:42Our current automotive system is broken.
03:47In just the last 20 years, new car prices have more than doubled.
03:51cars are getting bigger, fancier, and more expensive because of stuff.
03:59Night vision, fragrance diffusers, wifi, self-driving, self-parking, crystal-infused speakers.
04:07It's all out there.
04:08Know what's not out there?
04:10An affordable, reliable, new American vehicle that just happens to be electric.
04:16We looked at what the auto industry was doing and did the opposite.
04:25Instead of asking, what can we add to differentiate, we asked, what can we take away?
04:30Our answer, everything that's not a car.
04:34We call it the blank slate.
04:36A radically simple, radically affordable, radically personalizable car that you can be proud to show
04:42off.
04:43A two-door pickup truck, actually, that can turn into a five-seat SUV that can be wrapped
04:49in any color under the sun or the sun itself.
04:54Designed to be personalized with over a hundred a la carte accessories at any point in time.

05:00Because people should decide what to pay for and when, not car companies.
05:05People should have a car they love to drive, love to look at, and even love to own.
05:10But most people don't really have that choice anymore, at least they didn't, until now.

06:10The definition of what's affordable is broken.
06:15Slate exists to put the power back into the hands of customers who have been denied this

06:24We are building the affordable vehicle that has long been promised, but never been delivered.
06:31But with a twist.
06:33It's a vehicle people are actually going to love and be proud to own.
06:41Many of you have written articles, commented, or discussed with friends, why has the cost
06:48of a new car increased so much, why are they bigger every year with more features that people
06:57simply do not want, but are forced into buying?
07:03The idea for Slate goes back to 2022 when several visionary thinkers asked, could we build a radically
07:14affordable and simple new car?
07:19And while we're at it, could it also be radically customizable?
07:25Something consumers could be proud to show off.
07:29Then we took it a step further.
07:31Could we build it here in America?
07:42Could it be radically affordable, and also be reliable, meet five-star crash safety standards,
07:52and be a life-changing purchase for someone who was only considering used cars?
07:59The answer was a resounding yes.
08:08It is a new American company founded on a disruptive business model.
08:13We've simplified the manufacturing process and removed all unnecessary content to reduce
08:20cost and increase reliability.
08:24You could say, we took out everything that wasn't a car, so customers could decide what they
08:30want to put back in as accessories in a timeframe that makes sense for their wallet.
08:38The Slate truck is a beautifully simplified EV two-door pickup produced in a single configuration
08:46from the factory.
08:49It has an approachable and functional design, manual crank windows, and weighty air conditioning
