00:00In the late 1980s and early 1990s, Munoz Prabhakar was the kind of cricketer every captain wished
00:07for.
00:08A genuine all-rounder who could open both the batting and bowling with equal flair.
00:13A man of quite confidence, he was not one to make headlines with swagger, but rather
00:19with substance.
00:20During the Wills World Series at Vedodara on October 28, 1994, Munoz Prabhakar once
00:27again showcased his immense value to the team in India.
00:30Chasing a challenging total of 269 set by New Zealand, India needed a solid foundation,
00:37and Munoz Prabhakar delivered just that.
00:39Partnering the young prodigy Sachin Tandulkar, he stitched together a magnificent opening stand
00:45of 144 runs.
00:47The two right-hander dismantled the Kiwi new ball attack with controlled aggression and
00:52textbook stroke play.
00:54Munoz Prabhakar's inning was a masterclass in timing and temperament, affluent 74 runs
01:00off 95 balls, laced with 7 crisp boundary.
01:03Let's watch his innings.
01:05Munoz Prabhakar's inning.
01:06Munoz Prabhakar's inning, just over his head, timed it well off his leg, up his sleeve, and
01:12a disc...
01:13Just couldn't quite pull it in.
01:14Munoz Prabhakar's inning, so a bum ray to Tandulkar whipped away.
01:15and I just couldn't quite pull it in. So a bum rate to Kendoka whipped away.
01:24Bring the gosh chewing up it.
01:28The details of Manoj Prabaka, 31 years old, over a hundred one-day internationals.
01:34And we have to do 21.2, but a hundred and six fifties.
01:40So it's not a bad record, especially when you bear in mind he opens the bowling as well as the batting.
01:49And whether they've decided to attack him early, before he can settle into his rhythm.
01:59Manoj Prabaka, preparing to face Matthew Hart.
02:10Matthew Hart just giving him a bit too much whip there.
02:17Good ball, keep tossing it up, which is good.
02:19Don't want to drop too short, but just a little bit too much whip there for Prabaka to free his arms
02:24and hit a very good shot over the top four.
02:26Over the top again.
02:35And four more runs.
02:41Kamako is mixing very watchful defence and just occasionally deciding to take the bowler on.
02:50And the good thing about this is that Hart is getting hit in the right area of any such area to be getting hit in.
02:57But he is getting hit straight, he is getting hit over the top, and so that's good bowling.
03:01He is not throwing his length at all, he is not dropping short, he is not panicking.
03:05So even though it is good batting, also from my point of view, very good bowling for Matthew Hart.
03:10One of the better fielders, Shane Thompson.
03:25Not too very far away from that man in at mid-wicket short for that very shot.
03:44But not close enough for New Zealand.
03:47Prabaka starting to motor.
03:50And this is the way the 50 came up.
03:59Well, you've got to say that wasn't perhaps the most cultured shot that Prabaka's played, but it was effective.
04:05Took it off with that middle off stump, but I think he was playing the length then.
04:08Give him a bit of credit.
04:10Playing the length and got it past the short with the record field time.
04:15Present a very decent start for India.
04:18But the daunting prospect of course, is that from here on, they would need to go at a substantially higher run rate.
04:24Because that little figure in the corner keeps adding up all the time.
04:27Of the line before.
04:29Always a good shot to play in the one leg and the finer you play, the more likely you are not to find the fielder.
04:36And the fine leg and the third man are usually pretty wide.
04:43Especially when the medium paces are on.
04:46Because you are more likely to get more outback on ball than when the realistic men are on.
04:50And that went very fine indeed.
04:53Fine leg didn't have too much of a chance here.
04:55Just stuck the ground.
04:56The corner is going for a run that will see him complete at 50.
05:05So, another good performance with the bat in this match.
05:09Manoj Prabhakar putting up 50.
05:14Prabhakar has given him the charge.
05:16What a way to welcome the new man.
05:18First bounce, four runs over cover.
05:21And if Ken Rutherford was thinking about being flanked, they are cocking with Chris Bringo.
05:31Looking for a wicket.
05:32That certainly would have changed his mind about being a cocky.
05:35Prabhakar using his feet, getting down on one knee.
05:42Open the batting, open the bowling.
05:45He dare say that if you needed him, he could keep wicket as well.
05:48So, it still is a quite demanding requirement.
05:55Turn catch.
05:57And Prabhakar's fine earnings has ended.
06:00So, that's the break for New Zealand.
06:02With Prabhakar Kortenbold once more hard, just beating the batsman in the air.
06:07Well, that's what New Zealand were looking for.
06:11Captain Ken Rutherford changing his bowlers around, trying for that wicket.
06:17And it has finally come.
06:18Prabhakar just pushing back that delivery straight to Matthew Hart.
06:24What an excellent innings by Prabhakar.
06:2610-4 runs off, 9-4 balls.
06:29Very good work for his team India.
06:311-44-1.
06:32Manoj Prabhakar did not just hold one end.
06:35He built the tempo, rotated the strike smartly and punished anything loose.
06:40His knock allowed India to stay ahead of the chase.
06:43And by the time he departed, the job was more than half done.
06:47India eventually sailed home by seven wickets.
06:50But the foundation was all about Prabhakar's grit and compo year at the top.
06:55It was one of those classic Manoj Prabhakar performances.
06:58Quietly effective, unglamorous yet crucial.
07:01Reminding fans why he was such a vital cog in India's one-day unit.
07:06During that golden transitional phase of the early 1990s, on that Vedodara evening, Prabhakar
07:12was not just an opener or a baller.
07:15He was India's balance, India's unsung match winner.
07:19Minoj Prabhakar's cricketing journey was never about fireworks or flair.
07:23It was about reliability and responsibility.
07:26He belonged to that rare breed of cricketers who could adapt to any situation.
07:32The kind who steadied the ship when the storm hit or quietly set up victories without demanding
07:38the spotlight.
07:39What made Minoj Prabhakar stand out was his unwavering discipline and understanding of the
07:45game's rhythm.
07:46Whether it was swinging the new ball under the lights or crafting a sensible knock at
07:50the top, he carried a sense of calm assurance that inspired those around him.
07:56So, in an era filled with flamboyant names, Manoj Prabhakar's strength lay in consistency.
08:01His performances were like the unsung verses of a winning song.
08:06Not always noticed but always essential.
08:08Even today, those who watched him play remembered him as the glue that held India's one-day unit
08:14together.
08:15A dependable all-rounder who gave everything for the tricolor without ever asking for applause.
