00:00In 1692, fear and superstition turned one American town into a nightmare, the Salem Witch Trials.
00:08It began in Salem Village, Massachusetts, when two young girls, Betty Parris and Abigail Williams, suddenly fell ill, screaming and convulsing.
00:18Doctors couldn't explain it, so the community blamed witchcraft.
00:21Under pressure, the girls accused local women, starting with Tituba, an enslaved woman from the Caribbean, and two townsfolk, Sarah Good and Sarah Osborne.
00:32The panic spread fast. Neighbors accused neighbors. Ministers and magistrates demanded confessions.
00:40By May 1692, a special court was created. Over the next months, more than 200 people were accused, 30 convicted, and 19 executed by hanging.
00:50One man, Giles Corey, was pressed to death with heavy stones after refusing to plead guilty or innocent.
00:58The trials were fueled by religious extremism, local rivalries, and a deep fear of the unknown, not magic.
01:06By 1693, the hysteria collapsed. Judges admitted the evidence was worthless.
01:12Families of the dead were later given compensation.
01:15What began with the cries of two children ended in the deaths of innocent neighbors.
01:20The Salem witch trials remain a chilling reminder of what happens when fear outweighs reason.
