00:00Trump hurt the economy, majority of Americans say.
00:04During the 2024 campaign, President Donald Trump held a clear lead over Democratic rivals,
00:09then-President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris, when it came to voter confidence
00:14on the economy.
00:15A majority of Americans, 53%, believe Trump's policies have made economic conditions worse,
00:22while only 24% believe he's improved them, according to a new Pew Research survey.
00:27Just 26% of respondents to the Pew Research poll rated the current economy as excellent
00:32or good, including 44% of those who identify as or lean Republican.
00:38Meanwhile, 74% described the economy as fair or poor.
00:43Among those holding a negative view, top reasons cited included inflation, 17%, tariffs, 12%,
00:50and the overall high cost of living, 9%.
00:53That marks a sharp contrast with Pew data from November 2018, around the midpoint of Trump's
00:58first term, when 59% of Americans rated the economy as excellent or good — a drop of
01:0433 percentage points.
01:06Despite Trump's poor economy ratings, polls show voters still trust Republicans slightly
01:10more than Democrats on economic issues.
01:12It's interesting, given that for over a decade, studies — including a 2024 Economic Policy
01:18Institute report — show U.S. economic performance tends to improve under Democratic administrations.
01:25Economic performance is much stronger when Democrats hold the White House, EPI Chief Economist
01:30Josh Bivens said last year.
01:33But it is our sense that the simple facts on real-time economic performance during Democratic
01:37and Republican administrations aren't particularly well-known.
01:42These facts constitute important information people should have during this time of rampant misinformation.
