00:00Pope says he's concerned by some things happening in the U.S.
00:04In his first major interview since becoming Pope, Leo XIV expressed unease over some things happening in the United States.
00:11Leo, who was elected in May, sat down with Elise Allen, senior correspondent at Crux, for her upcoming biography,
00:18Leo XIV, Citizen of the World, Missionary of the 21st Century.
00:23Leo says he will not participate in politics.
00:26Leo emphasized a letter sent earlier this year by Pope Francis to U.S. bishops,
00:30in which Francis strongly opposed the Trump administration's deportation plans.
00:34While he praised their courage, Leo said that he will not participate in partisan politics
00:40and explained it's the role of U.S. church leaders to speak with President Donald Trump's team.
00:45Although Leo hasn't had contact with Trump, he noted that his brother, Louis Provost,
00:50had met with the president at the White House.
00:52He described being very close to his brothers despite differing political views.
00:57He said there are some things going on in the United States that are of concern,
01:01adding that sometimes decisions are made more based on economics than on human dignity and human support.
01:08Leo said he is ready to raise issues and challenge Trump if needed,
01:12while also wanting to support him in efforts to promote peace in the world.
01:16The fact that I am American means, among other things, people can't say,
01:20like they did about Francis, he doesn't understand the United States.
01:24He just doesn't see what's going on.
01:26Leo also described issues within the church, including clerical abuse, as a real crisis.
01:32However, Leo warned against making abuse the center focus of the church.
01:37He emphasized that the rights of the accused must be protected
01:40and acknowledged that false accusations do occur.
