Hey everyone. It's been so long since my last review/analysis video, and it is well past time that I finished one. Liufe just kept getting in the way. I moved. I got stuck in a trailer home for a while. I had to spend time unpacking stuff once I got to the new place. At some point, I injured my shoulder. I had to have surgery. I started working on this video BEFORE I had shoulder surgery back in the middle of August. I had to wait until I was well enough to sit down at my PC for longer than an hour before I could even attempt to edit this video. Everyone that initially agreed to be in this video dropped out, and I had to find new people to participate in it. One thing after another just kept getting in my way.

Anyway, the Playstation 2 is something truly special. It is more than just a gaming console for so many people, being a major part of their formative years. It has so many big releases that are great and tons of niche titles, as well. This console means a hell of a lot to a hell of a lot of people, so I wanted to do something different for this video. I wanted to focus on the emotion it brings to people. I wanted to focus on why the PS2 is so special to me and others, as well. With that in mind, @IndieTimmie joins me to share his own stories of the console, and I have a few guest spots, as well. I hope we did right by the PS2. I did my best.

00:00Hello everyone, it's the DoomDog. It's been far too long since I have done a big retrospective review.
00:07The last one I did was on Jak and Daxter over a year ago now.
00:11It's well past time I did the PlayStation 2 retrospective that I have been promising for quite some time.
00:19I am sorry it took so damn long,
00:22but join me as we take a trip back in time to take a look at the PlayStation 2
00:27and see what made it so special.
00:30When I have done console reviews in the past, I would give you technical specs.
00:35I would tell you what the console was capable of.
00:40I would showcase some of the games for it, highlighting its library.
00:46I would do all of these things that you would expect from a normal review.
00:50I feel like there's no point in doing that for the PlayStation 2.
00:53I know it's a great console.
00:56You know it's a great console.
00:59Everybody knows.
01:01It is the best-selling console of all time for a reason,
01:05at least during the time of writing this.
01:07The PlayStation 2 has a legendary lineup of great games and hidden gems.
01:12It served as a good DVD player capable of displaying in widescreen and progressive scan.
01:19It had some fun online games, and the online was completely free.
01:26Despite having lower tech specs than its direct competition in Microsoft and Nintendo,
01:33the right hands could work magic with it.
01:36The PlayStation 2 is deserving of its status as one of the greatest consoles ever made.
01:41If you are enough of a gamer to watch videos like mine,
01:47I'm going to assume you know this.
01:50This is why I will be doing something different with this video.
01:54I want this video to focus on the emotion the PlayStation 2 brought to us.
02:01I want it to bring up the nostalgia that we have tied to such an amazing concept.
02:08With that in mind, you will not hear technical specifications or resolutions
02:13or how cool pressure-sensitive buttons were.
02:18You won't hear anything like that.
02:19Instead, you will hear about different games and why we love them.
02:23You will hear little personal stories about the PlayStation 2
02:27and what made it so special to us all.
02:31Unlike previous videos, I will not be the only voice in this video.
02:39I will be joined by a very good friend of mine, Indy Timmy,
02:43who will be sharing his own story of this console,
02:48and I will have a few others join me for guest spots as well.

03:14It's going to be great.
03:15You had no idea at the time just how right you were.
03:20Do you remember the hype for the launch of the PlayStation 2?
03:24It was a fever pitch.
03:27And why wouldn't it be?
03:28The PlayStation 1 sold over 100 million units
03:32and revolutionized how we play games and how games tell stories.
03:37We were all incredibly pumped for what came next.
03:42People were lined up at stores all across the country
03:46chomping at the bit to get their hands on Sony's new hardware.
03:50And it did not disappoint.
03:53Do you remember the touring PlayStation 2 truck?
03:56This was around 2002 and it was a diesel truck
03:59traveling around the country stopping at various events
04:04such as concerts, festivals, and big sporting events
04:09with a bunch of PlayStation 2 kiosks set up in the trailer
04:14for people to just come by and play.
04:17That kind of thing was such a cool way
04:20to advertise both your console and your games
04:24and it allowed you to do it in a more relaxed,
04:29laid-back, or more pumped up and exciting setting.
04:33This sounds like the greatest job in the world, doesn't it?
04:36Traveling all across the country,
04:38going to cool concerts,
04:40and playing video games with people on the regular.
04:43For many, the PlayStation 2 was their first DVD player.
04:47DVD players were still rather expensive at the time
04:49and the PlayStation 2 offered a cheaper alternative
04:54that offered gaming as well.
04:57It served well as a DVD player
04:59as it offered up support for widescreen for DVDs
05:03and some games as well.
05:06You could get yourself a pair of component cables
05:08for the PlayStation 2
05:09and it would let you display your DVDs
05:12in progressive scan for a sharper picture
05:15and better colors with superior black levels.
05:18Composite video looked blurry
05:21and washed out by comparison.
05:23For those with access to a good audio system
05:27and higher-end TVs,
05:29it was a real treat
05:31that the PlayStation 2 brought to the table.
05:35Did you watch movies on yours?
05:37I know I did on mine.
05:39For those that wanted an online experience,
05:42you could get that with the PS2 as well.
05:44For the original models,
05:45you had to buy a separate network port
05:48to connect to the internet,
05:50but the slimlines had it built in.
05:53Online play was free
05:56and in my experience,
05:58it worked pretty well.
05:59I know I played my fair share
06:02of Killzone death matches
06:03and it was a lot of fun.
06:06It also offered up an early version
06:08of an MMO on a console
06:10with Final Fantasy XI,
06:13which came with its own hard drive
06:16that you would plug into
06:17the console's hard drive slot.
06:20Did you play Final Fantasy XI
06:21or any other online game?
06:24The PlayStation 2
06:25had some wild commercials too.
06:27The early days were full
06:29of some weird advertising
06:31trying to get you to think
06:32outside the box,
06:34and there was no better place
06:35to go for weird commercials
06:37than David Lynch.

07:21the PlayStation 9 one as well?
07:23PlayStation 9's new electronic spores
07:36tap straight into your adrenal gland.
07:42PS9 has improved retinal scanning.
07:47A mind control system.
07:50Holographic movie surround vision.
07:53And telepathic personal music.

10:46Metal Gear Solid
10:47over and over
10:48and over again
10:49to the point
10:50where we could quote

10:54as they were being spoken.
10:56So,
10:57we had to have the sequel
10:58when it came out.
10:59Needless to say,
11:01it was worth it.
11:03What really made
11:04the PS2 special
11:05is the games
11:07and the memories
11:08tied to them.
11:10With over 4,000 games
11:12to choose from,
11:13there truly is
11:14something for everyone.
11:16I know I have
11:18my favorites
11:18and games
11:20that bring up
11:20specific special memories
11:22and I am
11:23far from the only one.

11:48The first one I went to
11:49was for Final Fantasy 12.

11:52Final Fantasy fanboy mode
11:54at the time.
11:55So,
11:56I had to have it
11:57as soon as I could.
11:59I got the
12:00Steelbook edition
12:00that came with
12:02the bonus disc
12:02and I got the
12:04special edition
12:05of the strategy guide
12:06that came with
12:08an art book
12:08for the game.
12:10It was better
12:11when these were
12:12physical things
12:13that you could
12:13hold in your hand.
12:14I swear
12:16all you get now
12:17are digital art books.
12:18That's boring.
12:20Anyway,
12:20I remember driving
12:21to the store
12:22shortly before midnight.
12:24Boy,
12:25was I hyped
12:25and there were
12:27several people
12:28already there
12:29when I arrived.
12:30It was cool
12:31to get to talk
12:31to other people
12:32that were just
12:33as nerdy as me
12:34about these games.
12:37Face to face
12:38as we waited
12:39for the time
12:40to arrive.
12:41We all knew
12:42that it didn't matter
12:44if we worked
12:46the next day or not.
12:47We would go in
12:49tired because
12:50we spent hours
12:51playing the game
12:52after we got home
12:54and I did have
12:56work the next day.
12:58After talking
12:59with the other guys
13:01for a while,
13:03it was time
13:04to head into the store
13:06and pick up my copy.
13:07I was so pumped
13:09to get home
13:09and pop it in
13:10and play the game
13:11for myself.
13:11When I did,
13:13it was one of those
13:14holy shit moments
13:15where you are shocked
13:16that the PlayStation 2
13:17was even capable
13:19of something like this.
13:22I was presented
13:23with a huge,
13:24sprawling city
13:25packed with tons
13:26of NPCs
13:28walking around
13:29doing things
13:30that blew my mind.
13:33I know it's not much,
13:36but it was special to me.
13:38It's the first time
13:39that I managed
13:40to get a Final Fantasy
13:41game on launch day
13:42and I loved
13:43every second of it.
13:45Final Fantasy 12
13:45blew my mind
13:46when I played it
13:48back then
13:49and it is still
13:50one of my favorites
13:51to this day.
13:52Hell,
13:53I like it so much
13:54that I bought it again
13:55when it was remastered
13:56on the PlayStation 4
13:57even though I still
13:59have my PS2 original copy.
14:02Growing up,
14:03my brother was
14:03the PlayStation kid,
14:04whereas I remained
14:06the Nintendo kid
14:07for a while,
14:08never really moving
14:08on to the PS1
14:09except for Final Fantasy 8
14:11or something.
14:12So when we had the PS2,
14:13it didn't really have
14:15anything that interested me
14:16until Kingdom Hearts
14:18and Final Fantasy 10.
14:20So many people
14:21thought Kingdom Hearts
14:21was a joke announcement.
14:23All your favorite
14:24Disney characters
14:25mixed with Final Fantasy.
14:28That was such a wild
14:29concept back then
14:30and it worked
14:31so well.
14:33Kingdom Hearts
14:33and Final Fantasy 10
14:34are the two RPG games
14:35I really remember
14:36having actual voice acting,
14:38at least that I played.
14:40As a kid,
14:41getting to fight
14:42along Goofy and Donald
14:43was such a fun idea
14:44and that's coming
14:45from someone
14:46who never really watched
14:47much of Mickey
14:48and Friends growing up.
14:50It's just this wild concept
14:51made all of that
14:52so interesting to me.
14:54I remember having
14:55my brother help me
14:56with that Riku fight
14:57every time
14:57because I sucked
14:58and was too dumb
14:59to leveling up right.
15:01That 15 minute
15:01unskippable cutscene
15:03is a headache.
15:04Real ones
15:05know what I mean.
15:06Whenever I think
15:07of the peaceful
15:07and fun side
15:08of the PS2,
15:09Kingdom Hearts
15:09and its menu music
15:10will always come to mind.
15:12It's a fun
15:13and easy pickup
15:14and put down game
15:15with, to this day,
15:16a lot of fun,
15:17charm,
15:18and cringy humor.
15:19Grand Theft Auto 3.
15:35When Grand Theft Auto 3
15:37came out,
15:38it felt like
15:38the industry
15:39changed overnight.
15:40It was like
15:41someone flipped a switch
15:43and then there was
15:44the pre-GTA 3 industry
15:46and the post-GTA 3 industry.
15:49Sure,
15:49there were some
15:50open world games
15:51before it
15:52like Shenmue
15:53on the Dreamcast
15:54and Arena
15:55and Daggerfall
15:56on PC,
15:57but it was Grand Theft Auto 3
15:58that set the standard
16:00for what open world games
16:02could truly be.
16:03My brother and I
16:05did not get the game
16:06at first.
16:08It was a little while
16:10before we picked up
16:11a copy
16:11and it was him
16:13specifically
16:13that bought this game.
16:16It was one of the games
16:18that him and I
16:18played together
16:20the absolute most.
16:22It did not even have
16:24a two-player mode,
16:25but we didn't care.
16:26We would pass the controller
16:28back and forth
16:29playing until you died
16:30and passing the controller.
16:32The normal allowances
16:33were made for
16:34if you somehow died
16:36rather quickly,
16:37giving you only precious
16:39seconds with the controller.
16:40I do not know
16:42about you guys,
16:43but my brother and I
16:44spent a lot more time
16:45seeing just how much
16:47destruction we could cause
16:49before we died
16:50and trying to get
16:51the highest wanted level
16:52than we did
16:53actually playing the story.
16:56We spent so long
16:57trying to get six stars
16:59without dying
16:59and just to see
17:01how long
17:02we could stay alive
17:03before we were gunned down.
17:06It was so much fun
17:08and hilarious.
17:09We never expected
17:11the military
17:12to show up
17:13with tanks
17:14to come after us.
17:17We always tried
17:18to steal them.
17:20There was a parking garage
17:22in the game
17:23that we could climb
17:24to the top of
17:25and we would fire
17:27down at the police
17:28and random citizens below.
17:31We were convinced
17:32that this was the best place
17:34to survive our rampage
17:37longer
17:37and try to achieve
17:38six full stars.
17:40I have no idea
17:42if we were right or not,
17:43but it was fun
17:44as hell to try.
17:46I'll give you that
17:47and when Vice City came out
17:49we got to do it
17:50all over again.
17:52Only this time
17:54it included
17:54better music.
17:55The PS2 era
17:57of GTA
17:58will always be
18:00my favorite
18:00and playing
18:02it with
18:04my brother
18:04is a huge
18:06reason why.
18:08Extermination
18:08isn't talked about enough
18:09in the lineup
18:10of PS2 survival horrors.
18:12Extermination
18:13is a Resident Evil-like
18:14to its core.
18:15Fixed camera angles,
18:17tank controls,
18:18save rooms.
18:19What it had
18:19over Resident Evil
18:20though
18:20is an actual
18:21infection meter.
18:23In this game
18:23you play as a soldier
18:24who isn't immune
18:25to the virus
18:26going around
18:27in this secret
18:27winter facility.
18:29Every time you do
18:30get infected
18:30you have to run back
18:31to the nearest
18:32safe room.
18:33If it has an MTS bed
18:34that is.
18:35If not
18:36you better find one.
18:37If you aren't
18:38100% infected
18:39you can lower it
18:40with consumable vaccines
18:41but if you reach 100%
18:43the only way
18:44to cure yourself
18:45is with an MTS bed.
18:47So you can imagine
18:47this makes for some
18:49very stressful moments.
18:50Especially when
18:51something as small
18:51as the leeches
18:52can give you
18:53infection.
18:54I feel like as long
18:55as you play smart
18:56though
18:57the game provides you
18:58all you need
18:58to have a smooth
18:59and fun experience.
19:01I remember watching
19:01my brother play
19:02this game
19:03all the way through
19:04and it was so much fun.
19:06I vividly remember
19:07quite a few
19:09of the monsters
19:10in this game
19:10including some
19:11really strange
19:12winter dog
19:13like predators
19:14that guard
19:15an entrance outside.
19:17All in all
19:17it's a difficult
19:18but really fun
19:19survival horror
19:20that not enough
19:21people really talk about.
19:23when my brother
19:34and I were little
19:35our dad was a pastor
19:36at a small church
19:36in a Texas town
19:37called Decatur.
19:39When we were there
19:40my parents
19:41made friends
19:43with other
19:43Christian families.
19:45There was this
19:46one particular family
19:48that my parents
19:49were rather close
19:50with and these
19:52were people
19:52that I knew
19:53for probably
19:5410 to 15 years
19:55or so.
19:57It was ever since
19:58my brother and I
19:59were children.
20:01I do not want
20:02to name names
20:02but the father
20:04of the family
20:04was someone
20:05that we both
20:06looked up to
20:07as they were
20:09very close
20:10to our family
20:11for such a long time.
20:12Well, the father
20:14of the family
20:15got in trouble
20:16with the law
20:16and that is
20:18putting it lightly.
20:20I do not want
20:21to name names
20:22nor do I want
20:24to say exactly
20:24what he did
20:25so I will put
20:28it like this.
20:29He wound up
20:30in prison
20:31and his hard drive
20:33wound up
20:33in the hands
20:35of the authorities.
20:36To say
20:37that this came
20:38as a shock
20:40to us
20:40is a vast
20:41understatement.
20:43It was hard
20:44to process.
20:46Here is this man
20:47that we had known
20:49since we were children.
20:52Here is this man
20:53that we had
20:54grown up
20:55thinking was
20:56an upstanding
20:57and very likable
20:58guy.
20:59This was someone
21:00that we looked up
21:01to when we were
21:02kids
21:03and our views
21:04on him
21:05flipped in an instant.
21:07My brother and I
21:08were fucking
21:09livid.
21:10We were enraged.
21:13We needed an outlet
21:14for our anger.
21:15And we needed it bad.
21:17We went home,
21:19we sat in front
21:19of the TV
21:20and we booted up
21:21the PlayStation 2.
21:23The game we chose
21:24was Darkwatch.
21:25It had a co-op mode
21:27that let us play
21:28through the campaign
21:29together.
21:30We sat there
21:30for hours
21:31just playing
21:33through the game.
21:35And it was
21:36the exact
21:37catharsis
21:38that we needed.
21:39It let us
21:40get out our anger
21:41and it gave us
21:43abstraction
21:43from what was
21:44going on
21:45in real life.
21:47The game itself
21:47is pretty cool.
21:48It's a combo
21:49of the Old West
21:50and Gothic horror
21:51that combines
21:53to create
21:55a very unique
21:57feeling
21:58first person shooter.
22:00It is a bit
22:00of a hidden gem
22:01and I would
22:02recommend giving
22:03it a try.
22:04I hope Nightdive
22:05remasters it
22:07and puts it
22:07on PC
22:08and modern
22:09consoles someday.
22:10Regardless,
22:11it will always
22:12be special to me
22:13because it proved
22:15to be the exact
22:16right game
22:17that the two
22:18of us needed
22:19at the exact
22:20right time
22:21in our lives.
22:22I will always
22:24love it for that.

22:31at a young age

22:32let me play
22:33some pretty
22:33violent games.
22:34Turok,
22:35Duke Nukem 64,
22:36Mortal Kombat,
22:37etc.
22:39Then when I was
22:39around 11 or 12
22:40I see a commercial
22:41for this PS2 game,
22:43Manhunt.
22:44And in a pretty
22:45bold move
22:46I specifically
22:46remember them
22:47showing some
22:48of the kills,
22:49including the crowbar
22:50being shoved
22:50in one of the crook's
22:51head.
22:52That was pretty
22:53ballsy for back then.
22:54Being the gore hound
22:56that I was,
22:57at such a young age,
22:58it sparked interest
22:59right away
22:59and my mom
23:00hesitantly bought it
23:02for me,
23:02already knowing
23:03it was violent.
23:04She had no idea.
23:06Manhunt to this day
23:07I'm pretty sure
23:08is still banned
23:09in many countries
23:10for how realistically
23:11violent it is.
23:12At its core,
23:13it's a sneaking game
23:14where you complete
23:15a number of objectives
23:16while trying
23:17not to get spotted,
23:18but some levels
23:19forcing you
23:19into shootouts though.
23:21Even the voice acting
23:22I remember
23:23during executions
23:24going above
23:24what you'd expect.
23:27especially for the second one.
23:42I thought about putting
23:43the second one on here,
23:44but to me,
23:44the first game
23:45had way too much
23:46of an impact
23:46and I had to put
23:47that one on here.
23:48I worked at GameStop
24:02during the 2005
24:03holiday season.
24:05You know that piece
24:06of footage I showed
24:07with the launch
24:08of the PlayStation 2
24:09where the guy
24:10called the PS2
24:10the greatest
24:11entertainment system
24:12to hit the world?
24:13Yeah, I worked
24:14at that exact
24:16GameStop
24:17in that exact mall
24:18for that holiday season.
24:22Others have shared
24:23many a horror story
24:24about their time
24:27working there,
24:27but I didn't stick around
24:29long enough
24:30to experience any of that.
24:31I was strictly
24:32a temporary holiday hire.
24:35Truth be told,
24:36they hired too many people
24:37to work the store
24:39over Christmas
24:40that year,
24:41so I didn't even
24:43get a lot of hours.
24:45While I was there,
24:47however,
24:47I was allowed
24:48to take home games
24:50from the store
24:51to play provided
24:52that the store
24:53had more than one
24:54copy on the shelf.
24:56I thought that was
24:57the coolest thing ever
24:59and you bet your ass
25:00I took advantage
25:01of it to play
25:02a few games.
25:03One of the other guys
25:05that worked
25:06at GameStop,
25:07a regular that worked
25:09there for a while,
25:10would talk to me
25:12about games
25:14all the time
25:15during downtime.
25:17What else were we
25:18going to talk about there?
25:19We talked about
25:19new releases,
25:21classics,
25:22modern stuff
25:23from recent years
25:24as well.
25:26He asked me
25:26if I had ever
25:27played Shadow of the Colossus.
25:30It had released
25:31that October
25:31and I didn't even know
25:33much about the game
25:34at the time.
25:35I have to be honest
25:36with you,
25:37when he told me
25:37that it was just 16 bosses
25:39and literally nothing else,

25:47that it was very memorable
25:49and worthwhile.
25:51He kept telling me
25:53about how great it was
25:54and I did eventually
25:55buy into his hype.
25:56I grabbed one of the copies
25:58off the shelf
25:59before I left
26:00for the day
26:01and I headed home.
26:04Shadow of the Colossus
26:05was unlike anything
26:06I had ever played before.
26:08From the first moment
26:10I booted it up
26:11and started playing,
26:12it was something
26:14truly unique.
26:15It captured me
26:17with a sense of isolation
26:18and its melancholic atmosphere.
26:22The long,
26:23wordless intro
26:25and its striking
26:27and beautiful visuals
26:29instantly grabbed my attention
26:30and it would not let go.
26:33I rode out
26:35into the big,
26:36empty,
26:37but absolutely
26:38breathtaking world
26:39and when I figured out
26:42how to climb up
26:43and kill the first Colossus,
26:45I felt like a genius.
26:48It was a somber moment though.
26:50I could not escape
26:51the feeling
26:52that the Colossus
26:53didn't deserve it.
26:56I had never experienced
26:58anything like that
26:59in a game.
27:00Needless to say,
27:01when him and I
27:04were scheduled
27:04together next,
27:05I thanked him
27:06for talking me
27:07into picking the game up.
27:09I ranted and raved
27:10about how blown away
27:12I was with the game
27:13and I picked up
27:15a copy of my own
27:16as soon as I could
27:18so I could
27:20beat it for myself.
27:23I beat it
27:24and I wanted more
27:25which led to me
27:26seeking out Ico
27:28which I borrowed
27:29from a friend
27:30and beat on my PlayStation 2.
27:32I wound up picking it up
27:34with the PlayStation 3
27:36remaster of both games.
27:39They remain some of my favorites
27:40to this day.
27:42I will always be thankful
27:43for that short-lived
27:45working experience
27:46at GameStop
27:47for that one.
27:49It changed my perspective
27:50on what a game could be.
27:52Psychonauts is the game
27:53that taught me
27:54to never judge something
27:55for how it looks.
27:55I was around 13 or 14
27:57when this came out
27:58and I remember me
27:59and my brother
27:59both thought it looked
28:00so dumb
28:01when we saw the commercial
28:02and we had no intention
28:04of buying it.
28:06Then maybe a week later
28:07my dad comes home
28:07with this quote-unquote
28:08interesting looking game
28:10and you can guess
28:11it's Psychonauts.
28:12My brother decided
28:13to play it first
28:14that night
28:14and by the time
28:15we were in the coach's mind
28:17which is the first level
28:18we were hooked.
28:19The characters were funny
28:20and charming
28:21the music was whimsical
28:22and Disney-like
28:23and the concept
28:23of going into people's minds
28:24as levels
28:25is still something
28:26I love so much
28:27to this day.
28:28Going through someone's
28:29entire psyche
28:30and lurking through
28:30their baggage
28:31and finding figments
28:32of their imagination
28:33is just
28:34I still
28:35I love this concept
28:36still.
28:38The Milkman level
28:38will always be
28:39one of my favorite levels
28:40in any game.
28:42Just the absolute
28:42absurdity of it
28:44is
28:44still amazes me.
28:46My first time through it
28:47I couldn't stop laughing.
28:48Even today
28:49I still get laughs from it.

29:38a fairly standard
29:40CD tape
29:41and stereo unit
29:43with two speakers
29:45and it was one of those
29:47old AWA
29:48systems that
29:49everyone seemed
29:51to have
29:52in the early
29:53to mid 2000s.
29:54Mine had a line in
29:55so I always ran the audio
29:57for my game systems
29:58through it.
30:00I mounted the speakers
30:01on the wall
30:02then I got
30:04a second pair of speakers
30:06and mounted those
30:07on the back wall
30:08of the room
30:09as well.
30:09I strung speaker wires
30:12across the ceiling
30:13and had four speakers
30:15plugged into the two
30:16speaker slots
30:17on the back.
30:18That did not last long
30:20as I would get
30:20a hand-me-down
30:21Pioneer Head unit
30:22with four speaker channels
30:24and an equalizer bar
30:26on the front.
30:28It was awesome
30:28and I loved it.
30:30I replaced all four speakers
30:32with four bookshelf speakers
30:33that I still have
30:34to this very day
30:35and it sounded even better.
30:37Eventually I decided
30:39I wanted a surround sound unit
30:41in my room
30:42though
30:43so I picked one up
30:44at a pawn shop.
30:46I got another set
30:47of bookshelf speakers
30:49so I could use
30:51one of them
30:51as a center channel
30:52and I bought
30:54a cheap powered subwoofer
30:56at the pawn shop.
30:58At first
30:59I just ran my consoles
31:00through the standard
31:01red and white
31:02RCA cables
31:04but I ran up
31:05on digital optical audio
31:06online.
31:07Well what do you know
31:08the PlayStation 2
31:09is capable
31:10of outputting audio
31:12through digital optical.
31:14I made the trip
31:15to Best Buy
31:16because I just
31:17had to try it out.
31:19I got myself
31:19a digital optical cable
31:21and plugged
31:22my PlayStation 2
31:24up with it.
31:24The first game
31:25I tried
31:26with it
31:27was the PS2 version
31:29of Resident Evil 4
31:30one of the best games
31:32ever made.
31:32I distinctly remember
31:34running around
31:36as Leon
31:37in that area
31:39near the hedge maids
31:41right where you
31:42meet Ada.
31:43I passed by a fountain
31:44and I noticed
31:46the audio
31:46from that fountain
31:48moved from
31:49the front speakers
31:50to the back speakers
31:52as I ran past it.
31:53Needless to say
31:54this blew me away.
31:54I was stunned.
31:56I had experienced
31:57surround sound before.
31:58Of course
31:59my dad had
32:00it downstairs
32:01and I had watched
32:03many a movie
32:04with the family.
32:05But I had never
32:07even imagined
32:08what video games
32:09might do with it.
32:11Having the audio
32:12program to play
32:13in certain speakers
32:15in relation to
32:16where your character
32:17is was enough
32:19to blow my
32:20audio loving mind.
32:22I stood there
32:23by that fountain
32:24just turning
32:25Leon in circles
32:27for a while
32:27as I listened
32:28to the audio
32:29move from one
32:31channel to another
32:32in absolute awe
32:34of the power
32:34of good sound design.
32:37I already liked
32:38horror games
32:39at this point
32:40and this brought
32:41my love of horror
32:42to a whole new level.
32:44I love
32:45good sound design
32:47and games.
32:47and this
32:49was the first
32:50time I took
32:51special notice
32:52of it.
32:54Silent Hill 4
32:55will always be
32:55my comfort game.
32:57The game I go back
32:57to when I'm at
32:58my absolute lowest
32:59because it was
33:00the game I played
33:01at the lowest
33:02point in my life.
33:03Silent Hill 4
33:04explored themes
33:05of isolation
33:05I hadn't seen
33:06in other games.
33:07This feeling
33:08of being trapped
33:08and no way
33:09of telling someone
33:10you need help.
33:11I felt like that
33:12for a good portion
33:13of my life
33:13through my own
33:14doing and my own
33:15faults.
33:16I love
33:17all of the first
33:18four Silent Hills
33:19including the ones
33:19after.
33:20Not the Vita one.
33:21But 4 will always
33:22hold that special
33:23place in my chest.
33:24I would have
33:25full days
33:26where I would
33:26just sit in silence
33:27in Henry's room
33:28listen to the ceiling
33:29fan or put on music
33:30while I just stared
33:31at the room
33:32or stared outside
33:33the window.
33:34I became a voyeur
33:35in this world
33:36that I actually
33:36felt almost
33:37a part of.
33:38The music is always
33:39by the amazing
33:40Akira Yamaoka
33:41and probably some
33:42of my favorite songs
33:43from the series
33:44in general.
33:45Cradle of Forest
33:46is such a beautiful
33:47song and is
33:48underlooked.
33:49Walter's story
33:50is also one
33:50that stuck with me.
33:52A child abandoned
33:53by his parents
33:54alone in a hotel room
33:55and a psychotic cult
33:56poisoning the child's
33:58mind.
33:58In the end
33:59he never sees
33:59his mom
34:00never finds
34:01that happiness
34:02and depending
34:03on your ending
34:03Henry is just
34:05mutilated
34:05unrecognizable
34:06remains
34:07still locked
34:08in your room.
34:09The PlayStation 2
34:27provided many more
34:29memories than just
34:30the ones listed here.
34:31If I were to talk
34:32about all of it
34:33I'd be here all day
34:35and this video
34:36would be the
34:37longest damn
34:38one that I
34:39have ever done.
34:41This console
34:42was something
34:43truly special
34:44to all of us
34:46that played it.
