00:00Welcome to Ms. Mojo, and today we're counting down our picks for the worst
00:09near-fatal-onset injuries and disasters in movie history.
00:13He received last rites from a priest who did not speak English.
00:17Number 30, Jennifer Lawrence, The Hunger Games Mockingjay Part 2.
00:22We gotta go, we gotta get out of here now.
00:23It's months, they released months.
00:25Clogs, what's the fastest way out?
00:26One time, America's sweetheart Jennifer Lawrence was on set in Atlanta
00:31filming The Hunger Games finale.
00:33Everything seemed to be going smoothly until disaster nearly struck.
00:38During a scene where her character Katniss leads people through a tunnel,
00:42a fog machine malfunctioned.
00:44It kept pumping thick fog into the tunnel, choking Lawrence and her co-stars.
00:49Everyone vanished in the mist, though the sounds of gagging and choking were audible.
00:54The assistant director barked orders to turn on large fans to blow it away.
00:59The crew carried Lawrence to safety, though she was nauseous and nearly hacking up a lung.
01:07Number 29, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Premium Rush
01:11Premium Rush was a 2012 action crime thriller starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt as a bike messenger
01:17in New York.
01:18Unfortunately, the mean streets of NYC can be wild and dangerous.
01:22One day, while filming a biking scene, a car unrelated to production swerved into Levitt's
01:29lane and cut him off.
01:31Levitt managed to barely avoid getting squashed by swerving himself.
01:35Unfortunately, he flew off his bike through the back windshield of a taxi cab.
01:40The director thought he'd killed the actor until he made it to the scene of the accident.
01:51Levitt walked away with 31 stitches in his arm.
01:54Ironically, Levitt would get into another on-set bicycle accident a few years later,
02:00this time on the set of 2020's Project Power.
02:03Number 28, Halle Berry, The Call
02:06You wouldn't necessarily think that a film about a 911 call center operator would be dangerous.
02:12You would be wrong.
02:13Just ask Halle Berry.
02:15The Oscar winner, no stranger to on-set injuries, had to be rushed to the hospital after a slip
02:21and fall.
02:22Berry was filming a fight sequence during a late-night shoot.
02:25Around 10pm, she slipped and cracked her head on the concrete floor.
02:30She was sent directly to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.
02:33While head injuries are no laughing matter, Berry thankfully was released soon after,
02:38with only minor injuries.
02:40It's already done.
02:42What?
02:43Number 27, Chevy Chase, Modern Problems
02:47You don't often run the risk of losing your life while shooting a comedy,
02:51but that's exactly what happened to former SNL star Chevy Chase on the set of Modern Problems.
02:56What?
02:57Is he alright?
02:58I think so.
02:59He said he felt fine.
03:00He's with a doctor.
03:00At one point, his character enters a dream sequence where he imagines himself as an airplane.
03:06He wore a special suit equipped with landing lights.
03:09Unfortunately, the suit was incredibly warm, and the future community star began to sweat profusely.
03:16This moisture short-circuited the lights, and Chase was badly electrocuted.
03:21His entire nervous system was overloaded, and he lost consciousness.
03:25While he survived the accident, Chase suffered from PTSD and drug use afterward.
03:31Both, along with his notorious temperament, significantly harmed his career.
03:36I'm a monster! Look at me! This is a real me!
03:39Number 26, Matthew Fox, Lost
03:42Lost!
03:42On-set accidents happen, but they can be especially traumatic when a co-star is responsible.
03:51While Terry O'Quinn may be a nice guy in real life, his character in Lost could be a scary dude.
03:57In the show's finale, O'Quinn's character fatally stabs hero Jack Shepard, played by Matthew Fox.
04:03Unfortunately, the stunt almost proved fatal for the actor as well.
04:08O'Quinn had two knives, one reel, one rubber, for the sequence.
04:12When it came time to shoot the moment of the stabbing, he accidentally grabbed the real knife.
04:17He actually stabbed his co-star, who thankfully managed to survive the incident with good humor.
04:23Number 25, Charlize Theron, Eon Flux
04:27The 2005 adaptation of Eon Flux was an absolute disaster in almost every respect.
04:34Not only did it cost the studio millions when it flopped at the box office,
04:38but it almost cost Charlize Theron her life.
04:41Theron was filming a highly gymnastic sequence when the wires holding her aloft snapped.
04:46She fell on her head, severely injuring her neck.
04:49She was paralyzed for almost a week until the swelling went down.
04:53Theron has since admitted that she was a mere centimeter away from being paralyzed for life.
04:59She spent the next three months committed to a grueling physical therapy program.
05:03During that time, the agony of the injury and therapy
05:06almost caused the Oscar-winning actress to give up acting forever.
05:11But in Eon Flux, you almost got paralyzed.
05:13You fell on your head or something trying to do one of these quacky stunts.
05:17You know why? Because I have no business doing back handsprings.
05:20I'm not a gymnast.
05:21Number 24. Daniel Day-Lewis – Gangs of New York
05:25Daniel Day-Lewis paid a heavy price for his extreme brand of method acting on more than one occasion.
05:31But on the set of the Scorsese epic Gangs of New York,
05:34this devotion to craft almost cost Day-Lewis his life.
05:38As his character lived in the 1860s,
05:40Lewis insisted upon wearing period-specific clothing 24-7, despite the cold weather.
05:47When he developed pneumonia, he refused to treat the illness with modern medicine.
05:51Instead, he would spend his off-time in character on the streets of Rome, New York,
05:56trying to instigate fistfights with locals.
05:59You're a great one for the fighting, Bill, I know.
06:01But you can't fight forever.
06:03I can go down doing it.
06:04And you will.
06:05After the production ended, Day-Lewis confessed that his approach to the character
06:09almost ended with his own demise.
06:11Number 23. Margaret Hamilton – The Wizard of Oz
06:16The Wizard of Oz may be one of the most classic films in American history,
06:20but the set was a death trap.
06:22You cursed rat! Look what you're done!
06:25The original actor cast to play the Tin Man, Buddy Ebsen,
06:28had to drop out when the silver body paint gave him a near-fatal allergic reaction.
06:33He had to recover in an iron lung.
06:36Margaret Hamilton, also known as the Wicked Witch of the West,
06:39met with a nastier, near-disastrous fate.
06:43There was a running gag that the witch would often disappear in a puff of smoke.
06:50During one of those scenes, the trapdoor she had to fall through malfunctioned,
06:55and the pyrotechnics caused severe burns.
06:58She spent six weeks recovering and refused to do the stunt again.
07:02Number 22. Brendan Fraser – The Mummy
07:06Long before his renaissance and Oscar win, Brendan Fraser was a 1990s heartthrob.
07:13He reached the pinnacle of stardom with the 1999 blockbuster The Mummy.
07:17His career almost ended on that set when a crew member made an almost deadly mistake.
07:23During a scene where his character is almost hung,
07:26a crewman held the other end of the noose off-camera.
07:28Fraser stood on his tiptoes while the crewman tugged the rope to keep it tight on camera.
07:34He pulled a little too hard, though, and yanked Fraser completely off the ground.
07:40The actor almost choked to death before anyone recognized the error.
07:44And there was a stunt guy, the coordinator was there, and he was going,
07:48Brendan!
07:50Brendan, wake up!
07:51And I'm like, oh, what happened?
07:53Ha ha, congratulations, you're in the club!
07:55Same thing happened to Mel Gibson on Braveheart!
07:58Oh my god!
08:00He lost consciousness and woke up dazed on the ground with gravel in his teeth.
08:04You're actually technically dead?
08:06Technically dead, my doctor told me, for like 12 or 14 seconds.
08:08But I guarantee you there was nothing auto or erotic about it.
08:11Number 21.
08:12Kurt Russell.
08:13The Thing.
08:14On the set of the 1982 John Carpenter classic The Thing,
08:18star Kurt Russell learned a valuable lesson.
08:21Dynamite is incredibly dangerous.
08:23In one of the film's most famous scenes,
08:26his character MacReady blows up the alien shapeshifter with a stick of dynamite.
08:30He didn't realize just how powerful the explosion would be.
08:33In the scene, he tosses the stick at the creature and is blown back by the force of the explosion.
08:38That was 100% real.
08:42Russell nearly died, but was thankfully thrown to safety.
08:45The take was left in the film.
08:47I don't think we're in much shape to do anything about it.
08:49Number 20.
08:50Dylan O'Brien.
08:52Maze Runner.
08:52The Death Cure.
08:54You can't save everyone, Thomas.
08:58I can try.
09:00A post-apocalyptic world doesn't make for a safe work environment, apparently.
09:04In March of 2016, it was reported that actor Dylan O'Brien had been struck by a car while on set,
09:11working on the death cure, resulting in multiple injuries.
09:15The exact nature of the injuries were not initially revealed to the public,
09:19but he was rushed to the hospital.
09:20Oh, he got his bell rung.
09:22He got his bell rung.
09:23I would imagine many who witnessed it thought that was it.
09:28The production was initially put on hold for a little under two months,
09:31before being extended indefinitely.
09:34It was close to a full calendar year before shooting resumed.
09:37It turns out that Dylan had suffered a facial fracture,
09:40concussion and brain trauma, as well as other injuries.
09:44You know, it was a really personal and scary thing to go through.
09:47Number 19.
09:48Jackie Chan.
09:49Armor of God.
09:50Jackie Chan is well known for performing his own stunts.
09:53In this particular one, the stunt resulted in him falling over 16 feet from a tree.
09:58For Armor of God, while attempting to jump from a wall toward a branch,
10:09Chan landed hard, and in the process, his skull collided with a rock.
10:14This pushed bone into his brain, which required surgery to remove.
10:19Everyone's favorite martial artist still has a hole in his head,
10:22though it's been filled with a plastic plug.
10:24Luckily, Chan seemingly escaped the incident without lasting brain damage.
10:28More on his stunt work later.
10:34Number 18.
10:36Isla Fisher.
10:37Now You See Me.
10:38Okay, Los Angeles.
10:39Are we ready to end this thing?
10:42Yeah!
10:42Remember when escapologist and magician Henley Reeves
10:45pretends to be stuck in a tank of water as piranhas pour in?
10:48A tank full of flesh-eating piranhas will fall from above.
10:53A lady has to have handcuffs, right girls?
10:55Well, it turns out pretending to be stuck and being stuck look very similar.
11:00During the filming of this Now You See Me scene, actress Isla Fisher banged on the glass to tell the cast and crew she was stuck.
11:07But since that's what her character was supposed to do, no one thought much of it.
11:10Thankfully, she managed to free herself in time.
11:19Practical effects shouldn't need to be this real.
11:21What happened to movie magic?
11:23Whoever thought of this is a sick sadist!
11:30Number 17.
11:31Viggo Mortensen.
11:32The Lord of the Rings.
11:33The Two Towers.
11:34Depending on who you ask, Mortensen came close to dying in Middle-earth twice.
11:39Viggo almost drowned doing one of his own stunts, which is well-established.
11:44Aragorn was supposed to be doing a dead man's float down the river,
11:47but the speed of the current, coupled with the weight of his costume, made for real danger.
11:51So in any case, I didn't float to exactly the same spot they had,
11:55and I hit this spot where the current hit this rock and went straight down.
11:59Mortensen was pulled underwater and nearly stayed there.
12:02But it's also been reported that a scene where Aragorn deflects the Uruk-hai's throwing knife
12:07was actually a mistake, and the deflection was actually self-preservation.
12:12Planned or accidental, Viggo's clearly got some survival skills.
12:15I guess I must have eventually kicked against the wall or the rock
12:19and got just out of where this current was pushing down.
12:22Came out of it, and it was really scary.
12:25Number 16.
12:26Kate Winslet.
12:27Titanic.
12:28Few things are scarier than a near-drowning incident.
12:30Can you imagine having to run from a giant wave?
12:40During the Titanic scene in question, Kate Winslet caught her coat on a gate and got pulled underwater.
12:46James Cameron continues to dismiss the idea that she was in any real danger,
12:51claiming they only let her think she was going to drown.
12:54Come here!
12:54He also claims to know what he's talking about because he's almost drowned on many occasions.
13:05Let's put this incident aside for a second and ask ourselves,
13:08why does James Cameron keep nearly drowning?
13:10Oh God!
13:11James Cameron consistently pushes the boundaries of visual effects,
13:25but when it comes to water scenes, he prefers the old-fashioned way.
13:30Titanic wasn't the first time Cameron reportedly almost led a cast member to a watery grave.
13:34Just ask Ed Harris.
13:36For one particularly elaborate scene in The Abyss,
13:39Harris was dragged, without oxygen, many feet underwater.
13:43When he ran out of air, Harris called to cut, but due to complications,
13:47he wasn't given oxygen until he was on the edge of passing out.
13:51According to the actor, the traumatic episode caused him to weep that night.
13:55Rumor has it, he also punched Cameron in the face.
13:57You don't have any air supply of your own,
13:59they're going to drag you 200 feet across the bottom of this tank while you're acting.
14:04Number 14.
14:06Jamie Alexander, Thor The Dark World, and Blindspot.
14:09This thief actress got defeated by the most humble of foes in the second Thor flick,
14:14A Flight of Stairs.
14:15You might want to take the stairs to the left.
14:18After tripping over in heels, Jamie Alexander chipped 11 vertebrae,
14:23knocked out her left shoulder, slipped a spinal disc, and tore a rhomboid.
14:28Don't worry though, she was largely healed and back to filming within a month.
14:32Good, let's go.
14:33However, we couldn't finish this entry without mentioning the injury
14:36she sustained on the American crime drama Blindspot.
14:44During a Today appearance, the actress needed to consult her smartphone
14:48to remember the multitude of injuries she sustained on set.
14:51Herniated disc, T3, T4, T8, T9, broken nose, dislocated right shoulder,
14:55broken right index finger, broken left foot, left two toes three times.
14:59The only conclusion you can make is she's a real-life Asgardian warrior.
15:03Number 13.
15:04Sylvester Stallone, Rocky IV.
15:12By the time Stallone was filming the first Expendables movie,
15:17he was already in his 60s, but he was still doing many of his own stunts and fight scenes.
15:23This resulted in an inadvertent neck fracture for the Italian stallion,
15:27courtesy of Stone Cold Steve Austin.
15:30Look at me, you piece of trash.
15:32It wasn't his first on-set injury, of course.
15:35While filming Rocky IV, Stallone once asked his Mountain of a co-star
15:39to punch him as hard as he could.
15:41His co-star, Dolph Lundgren, obliged,
15:43and sent Stallone to the hospital with a swollen heart.
15:47Without medical attention,
15:48it's very likely Stallone would have died from the punch.
15:57Number 12.
15:59Michael J. Fox.
16:00Back to the Future Part 3.
16:02The Back to the Future series isn't known for its realism.
16:05The time-traveling car and flying skateboards made sure of that.
16:08Yet one scene of the trilogy was all too real for lead Michael J. Fox.
16:21In the series' final installment,
16:25Marty McFly is captured by bandits
16:26and hung with a noose until the doc rescues him.
16:29If McFly's squirming looks genuine,
16:36it's because the actor really was being hung.
16:39He even passed out for half a minute before he was saved.
16:42Luckily, director Robert Zemeckis caught on in time that,
16:46in the words of Michael J. Fox,
16:47he wasn't that good of an actor.
16:50But it's good to see you, Marty.
16:53Number 11.
16:54Kevin Kosner.
16:56Waterworld.
16:59Waterworld is widely considered
17:04to be one of the greatest cinematic failures
17:06in the history of the industry.
17:08From production through to the box office,
17:10everything that could go wrong did.
17:12For one scene,
17:13Kevin Kosner was strapped to the mast of his character's boat,
17:1640 feet in the air.
17:18When a storm picked up,
17:19conditions proved too difficult to get Kosner down safely,
17:22and he was left there to be assaulted by the storm for 30 minutes.
17:26The Hawaiian set was regularly hammered by brutal weather,
17:29but unable to shield himself from this particular storm,
17:32Kosner claims it nearly cost him his life.
17:41Number 10.
17:42Halle Berry.
17:43Various films.
17:47As mentioned before,
17:48this Academy Award-winning actress
17:50has had more than her fair share of on-set accidents.
17:53While filming Die Another Day,
17:55a stunt involving a helicopter resulted in Berry getting shrapnel in her eye,
18:00which had to be medically removed.
18:02On the set of Gothica,
18:03Robert Downey Jr. accidentally broke her arm while shooting a confrontational scene.
18:08Then, while shooting Catwoman,
18:10lighting equipment hit her over the head.
18:12Thankfully, it wasn't serious,
18:14but Berry just might have nine lives.
18:17Number 9.
18:18Johnny Depp.
18:19The Lone Ranger.
18:20The Lone Ranger already had to suffer being panned by audiences and critics.
18:24But imagine how much hate it would have received
18:27if it had been the cause of Johnny Depp's demise.
18:29I am Tonto of the Comanche.
18:33Last of the Wendigo Hunters.
18:34During one horseback riding scene,
18:36Depp's saddle slipped.
18:38Johnny held onto the horse's mane before letting go
18:40and falling in front of the horse.
18:42Luckily, the horse's hooves just missed his head,
18:45meaning he received only minor wounds from the fall.
18:48But I cannot decide whether this horse is stupid
18:51or pretending to be stupid.
18:54Obviously, Depp survived,
18:55and the only thing the film did any permanent damage to was his career.
19:00Number 8.
19:01Eli Wallach.
19:02The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly.
19:04I get dressed, I kill him, be right back.
19:06Wallach has had his fair share of accidents,
19:08but they all happen during a single film.
19:11While shooting Sergio Leone's masterpiece,
19:14Eli nearly bit the dust a whopping three times.
19:17In one instance,
19:18he had to be rushed to the hospital
19:20after someone left a bottle of acid
19:22next to his prop bottle of soda,
19:24which he drank.
19:25Another time,
19:26a bound Wallach was put at risk
19:27when the horse he was mounted to
19:29was spooked and ran off for a mile.
19:31And then there was the incident
19:32where he was nearly decapitated
19:34by the heavy iron steps of a speeding train.
19:37Remarkably, he survived,
19:38dying at age 98 in 2014.
19:42Number 7.
19:43Jason Statham.
19:44The Expendables 3.
19:46You'd feel pretty safe
19:47hanging out with the Terminator,
19:48Rambo, and Terry Crews, wouldn't you?
19:51I think we should get this over with.
19:53In fact, when these guys are together,
19:55the biggest fear might be
19:56that the continent they're on
19:57could run out of protein.
19:58This guy's got more muscle
20:00than a cartel king.
20:01Maybe he's overcompensating for something.
20:02Yet Jason Statham did nearly die
20:04doing a stunt for The Expendables 3.
20:07How much we can't pay for this?
20:08Not enough.
20:09While driving a truck,
20:10the brakes gave out
20:11and the actor drove off a cliff
20:12into the Black Sea.
20:14The transporters driving
20:15may have let him down,
20:16but fortunately,
20:17his expert-level diving skills
20:19helped him escape the wreckage
20:20and swim to shore.
20:21You all right?
20:24Yeah!
20:25Number 6.
20:26Aaron Paul.
20:27Breaking Bad.
20:27Did you know that Jesse Pinkman
20:29was supposed to be killed off
20:30in the first season of Breaking Bad?
20:32I'm your partner, man.
20:33You should have told me.
20:35The idea was ditched early on
20:37because, you know,
20:38Jesse's awesome.
20:39Badass from what I hear.
20:41But the writers may never
20:42have had the chance to save Jesse
20:43if Aaron Paul wasn't a perfectionist.
20:46In episode 6 of the first season,
20:48Paul asked to change the position
20:50where he was standing.
20:51This was very lucky
20:52because a boulder fell down
20:54off the roof of an RV
20:55and landed exactly where Aaron
20:57had been standing
20:58during the filming of the scene.
20:59Mr. White,
21:00it's too risky.
21:03Okay?
21:04I mean, we're making money.
21:06Why can't you just be satisfied
21:07with the way it is?
21:08No, come on!
21:08Jesus!
21:09Number 5.
21:10Martin Sheen.
21:11Apocalypse Now.
21:13Don't you think it's a little risky
21:14for R&R?
21:15An infamously troubled shoot,
21:17the cast and crew
21:18of the critically acclaimed film
21:20have said that,
21:21much like Marlon Brando's
21:22Colonel Kurtz,
21:23many involved in the production
21:25kind of lost their minds.
21:26Those involved partied
21:28very, very hard,
21:30getting lost in the jungle atmosphere
21:31and losing themselves
21:32in their roles.
21:33Martin Sheen,
21:34who was already hitting the bottle,
21:36began to lean even more heavily
21:37into alcohol
21:38throughout the high-stress shoot.
21:40Ultimately,
21:41his body responded
21:41in the form of a heart attack
21:43and nervous breakdown.
21:44He survived,
21:45but the entire experience
21:46would continue to haunt him
21:48for years.
21:49That if I wanted to live,
21:50it was my choice.
21:51If I wanted to die,
21:51that was my choice too.
21:52Number 4.
21:53Tom Hanks.
21:54Cast Away.
21:55Tragedy nearly struck
21:57when actor and generally
21:58nice bloke Tom Hanks
21:59cut himself on the set
22:00of this adventure drama.
22:02While only a minor cut,
22:03it quickly became infected.
22:06Over here!
22:07Help me!
22:08Help!
22:08Right here!
22:09Right here!
22:10When he finally went
22:10to the hospital,
22:11a doctor told him
22:12the cut could poison his blood,
22:14so Hanks was kept
22:15in the hospital.
22:16We live and we die
22:17by time, don't we?
22:18This incident set
22:19filming back three weeks,
22:21but Hanks fully recovered,
22:22and we're certainly glad
22:23he didn't die.
22:25Who would have broken
22:25the news to Wilson?
22:27Oh!
22:29Oh!
22:29Never again!
22:31Never again!
22:32Never again!
22:33Number 3.
22:34Jim Caviezel.
22:35The Passion of the Christ.
22:36Shooting in the countryside
22:47outside of Rome,
22:48the cast and crew
22:49of The Passion of the Christ
22:50continued to work through
22:51some less than favorable
22:53weather conditions.
22:54While recreating
22:55the Sermon on the Mount,
22:56Jim Caviezel was literally
22:58struck by lightning.
22:59He walked away unscathed,
23:01but he clearly got off lucky.
23:02Roughly 24,000 people
23:04die from lightning each year.
23:06Although very few
23:07of them are actors.
23:08Assistant director
23:09Jan Michellini,
23:11who was standing
23:11beside Caviezel,
23:13also got struck.
23:14Although for him,
23:15it was the second time
23:16in production.
23:17Think somebody was trying
23:18to tell them something?
23:20My top didn't know.
23:22Number 2.
23:23Tom Cruise.
23:24The Last Samurai.
23:25The Last Samurai
23:26is heavy on the sword play.
23:34Combine this with the fact
23:35that Tom Cruise likes
23:37to do his own stunts,
23:38and it seems like he was
23:39bound to get hurt on its set.
23:41In one scene,
23:42Cruise and his Japanese co-star
23:44were seated on mechanical horses.
23:46These two horses
23:47were hurtled towards each other,
23:48and his fellow actor's sword
23:50missed Cruise's neck
23:51by an inch,
23:52thanks to his martial arts skills.
23:55I think a man does what he can.
23:57Still, that was relatively tame.
23:59Another fight scene
24:00featuring four attackers
24:01apparently had 70 instances
24:03in which Cruise
24:04could have been wounded.
24:05I should have died
24:06so many times before.

24:24Number 1.
24:25Jackie Chan.
24:26Police Story.
24:27This action legend
24:33has put life and limb
24:34on the line enough times
24:35to earn his stunt work
24:37top 10 lists of its own.
24:39Of course,
24:39with that sort of commitment
24:40comes serious risk.
24:42One of Chan's scariest
24:43on-set moments
24:44came while filming
24:45Police Story,
24:46which he wrote
24:47and directed himself.
24:49The 1985 film
24:50included a scene
24:51where he had to slide down
24:52a 70-foot pole
24:53surrounded by string lights.
24:55For his trouble,
25:01he received
25:01second-degree burns,
25:03a dislocated pelvis,
25:04and two damaged vertebrae
25:06in his spine.
25:07Chan not only survived,
25:09but also went on
25:09to film countless
25:10other awe-inspiring feats.
25:17Movie making
25:18can be a dangerous business.
25:20Are there other
25:20near-fatal accidents
25:21that should be on this list?

25:27Why don't we just
25:28wait here for a little while,
25:32see what happens.
