00:00Can the very latest electric cars really go far enough on a single charge?
00:04To find out, we're going to see if these electric cars can drive from here in Oxford
00:09all the way up into Scotland.
00:11Will they make it on a single charge?
00:13I don't know.
00:14I also don't know what's going to happen to them when they do finally run out of charge.
00:18Will they brick themselves?
00:19Will they lock their doors?
00:20Will they be immovable?
00:21Or will it all be fine?
00:23Oh.
00:25Oh dear.
00:26Well, we're going to find out and I think it's going to be a bit surprising.
00:29I'm Matt Watson and you're watching CarWag.
00:34The cars I'm testing today are the Genesis GV70, which I'm sat in.
00:38We've got BMW iX, a Polestar 3, an Audi Q6 e-tron and a Kia EV9.
00:44We've got the longest range versions of each of these cars
00:46and this is what the manufacturers say they'll do on a full charge.
00:49Well, these cars have been charged up to 100% overnight.
00:51But before we start driving, I want to see how far each car's trip computer thinks
00:55it can go on its full battery.
00:57This GV70 says it's going to do 278 miles.
01:01What's the BMW saying?
01:03393 miles.
01:04Polestar is 340 miles.
01:07Audi is 277 miles.
01:09The Kia 349 miles.
01:12Oh, already a bad start for the Genesis and the Audi.
01:16Well, we're going to see what happens as we head up north and how far they'll actually go
01:20will be revealed.
01:21Now, for this test, what we're going to do is just drive the cars as we'd normally drive.
01:25So we're going to try and get up to the speed limit and keep to it where possible.
01:28However, when we start getting low on battery, we'll do what every EV driver will do.
01:32And that is slow down to conserve electricity.
01:34For the rest of the journey, though, just drive it like normal.
01:36Have the climate control exactly as we want it.
01:38It's summertime, though.
01:39So what we get out of these cars today will be about as good as they're ever going to do.
01:44I'll drive every car during this test, and I'll tell you what's good about them and what's not so good,
01:48beginning with this Genesis, which seems rather appropriate.
01:52The Genesis GV70 starts from ÂŁ66,000.
01:55But the good thing about it is it's so fully loaded for that money.
01:59You're getting quite a lot of car for your cash.
02:01And it feels very nice to sit in.
02:02So the materials are really nice.
02:04It feels expensive.
02:05The design's cool.
02:06I love the feeling of, like, this switch gear.
02:08I love the fact this is all one screen here.
02:11None of, like, dividing bits in the middle like in the BMW.
02:13And it's crisp.
02:14It's easy to use.
02:15And they've separated out the climate control to this other panel down here.
02:18Wish it was physical buttons, but it's still better than having it buried through the main screen.
02:22The driving experience is very good.
02:24It's super comfy.
02:25The suspension is brilliant over bumps.
02:27And if you go into sports mode, then it gets a little bit stiffer and sportier.
02:31That said, the car does still lean quite a bit in the bends.
02:33Feels a bit of a boat, to tell you the truth.
02:35It's quite heavy.
02:362.3 tonnes.
02:37But this is set up for comfort, not speed, really.
02:40And it does a great job with its adaptive dampers.
02:42And these seats, absolutely love them.
02:44It's very quiet as well.
02:46Just a bit of wind noise.
02:47That's about it.
02:48And visibility's great as well.
02:49Good view out the back window.
02:50Huge door mirrors.
02:51Great view forward.
02:52I like it a lot.
02:53I'm surprised more people don't buy these things, really.
02:55It's a bit of an unknown, I guess, isn't it, for many people?
02:58Like Genesis.
02:59What's that all about, eh?
03:00It's just a posh Hyundai.
03:01This car has an 80 kilowatt hour battery pack, two electric motors, one on each axle, so four-wheel drive.
03:06I combined 490 horsepower, which is fairly decent, and 700 newton metres of torque.
03:11And if you're in just normal mode and you need a zip of acceleration, press boost button and it does pick up pretty nice.
03:17And I quite like that noise.
03:18The only thing I'm not so sure about, the brakes, they're a little bit grabby.
03:21Overall, though, this is really nice.
03:23It's a luxurious-feeling cruiser.
03:25But I think it's going to get a little bit tense when it comes to the range.
03:29Let's do a quick check-in.
03:30We've done 18 miles.
03:32This car is averaging 3 miles per kilowatt hour.
03:35I've got 92% of my battery left, and that's good for a remaining range, according to the car, of 254 miles.
03:41Let's find out about the other cars now.
03:43BMW, how are you getting on?
03:453 miles per kilowatt hour.
03:47It's sitting at 93% battery, and it's predicting that I'm going to do a further 367 miles.
03:55That's more than 100 miles more than this car.
03:57What about the Polestar?
03:59I am averaging 29.7 kilowatt hours per 100 miles, which works out to 3.6 miles per kilowatt hour.
04:08My battery's at 92% and a claimed range of 320 miles.
04:13How about the Audi?
04:133.2 miles per kilowatt hour.
04:16I have 94% of my battery remaining, and apparently that equates to 265 miles of range.
04:23And finally, the Kia.
04:243.1 miles per kilowatt hour.
04:26I've 94% of my battery left, and that should take me 335 miles.
04:31So far, then, as much as I like this Genesis in terms of range, it's doing the worst.
04:37There's plenty of room here in the back of the Genesis.
04:39Lots of knee room.
04:40Headroom's good.
04:40Foot space is good.
04:41It's all very nice.
04:42I like the fact you can recline these seat backs.
04:45Oh, yeah.
04:45That's good.
04:46It's like limo style.
04:47What's it like for three people in the back at once?
04:49Give me a special man sandwich.
04:51This is why I employ you.
04:52Right.
04:53It's kind of tight-ish, isn't it?
04:55Shard of room's a problem.
04:56Yeah, a bit of a problem, but are you all right for head and knees?
04:58Yeah, actually.
04:59Yeah, it's okay.
05:00The GV70 has 503 litres of boot space, but what does that mean in real terms?
05:06Tommy, you're a big man.
05:08See if you can get in the boot.
05:09You've got to get underneath the low cover.
05:10That's a test.
05:11Oh, blimey.
05:12This is not good already.
05:13Right.
05:14No, not good.
05:15Oh, wait.
05:15I'm not sure we're going to get anyone else besides a Tommy inside, but let's give it
05:19a go.
05:19No.
05:20No.
05:21It will.
05:21It will.
05:22So, Sam is the human shoehorn.
05:24Hang on.
05:25He's going to try and push him in.
05:27No, this is no.
05:28Wait, wait.
05:29Stop, stop, stop, stop, stop, stop, stop.
05:31No, it's a fail.
05:32Maybe I need to do it a different way.
05:33No, it's all right.
05:34It's not going to work.
05:34Let's just shut the boot just to prove we can get at least one person in there.
05:38No, I don't want to be the kind of person that gets their team to do stuff that they're
05:44not wanting to do, so I'll do the front boot.
05:48Sam, can you try and fit me into this small space here?
05:52Absolutely.
05:55Yeah, go on.
05:56Try it.
05:56See what happens.
05:57No, it's not.
05:58No, it's not really very good.
06:00It's quite interesting that manufacturers do this.
06:02I'm glad they do try, but what are you putting in there?
06:06I quite like the look of this GV70.
06:08Jack's missus over there, when he took it home the other night, she thought it was a
06:11Bentley, so that's a sort of win.
06:12But there are certain things like, it doesn't look like the bonnet's shut, and then there's
06:15this crease at the back, which I like the way this crease goes here, but then it all
06:19gets a bit confusing there.
06:21So, quite nice.
06:22Just a few odd things going on.
06:25Now, before I jump into the BMW iX, there's something I need to check.
06:28We're at Northampton North M1 Services, and there's always been a problem with the
06:32charging here.
06:32They have, like, one unit that doesn't seem to ever work.
06:35Oh!
06:36Oh!
06:38It's working!
06:39They've got one charger, two!
06:41A CHAdeMO, for if you've got a Nissan Leaf, and a proper DC charger.
06:47And it's charging at 46 kilowatts for 85p per kilowatt.
06:52It's a bit expensive.
06:53Coming out of the Genesis into this, I'm surprised how this feels even more comfortable in terms
06:58of the suspension and weight goes down the road, but that's because this particular version
07:02of the iX is fitted with the optional air suspension, and air suspension on this car
07:07is just, you have to do it.
07:08It's worth the ÂŁ2,000.
07:10Thing is, though, it also feels slightly sportier as well, just a bit more in the way
07:14that it goes around corners, a bit flatter, a bit more responsive on the steering, even
07:18though it's heavier than the Genesis, weighs in at 2.5 tonnes.
07:22It doesn't matter too much because we've got a lot of power.
07:24So, on this particular X-Drive 60 model, two electric motors, one on each axle, so four-wheel
07:29drive, 544 horsepower, 760 newton metres of torque, so plenty of punch for overtaking, and
07:39it really does push you back in your seat, especially when you're in the sports mode.
07:42What I'm not so impressed at, though, really, when you consider the price, the iX starts
07:46from ÂŁ75,000, this X-Drive 60 from ÂŁ93,000, this one with all the kit on it, ÂŁ107,000.
07:55Does it feel ÂŁ40,000 more expensive than that Genesis?
08:00Simple answer, no it doesn't.
08:01Some of the bits in the interior feel lower rent, actually, than the Genesis, like this,
08:04and listen to this.
08:06That is awful, and you use that a lot.
08:09Also, the screen, it's not one single screen.
08:11There is a gap in the middle, and it's harder to use.
08:14I'm not sure the seats are quite as comfortable.
08:16I do like the material, because it holds you in place, you don't slide around like you do
08:19on leather, and the design, it's sort of minimalistic and cool, but overall, I think I preferred
08:23the design of the Genesis.
08:24It's just a bit more normal.
08:27One thing this car does have over the Genesis, obviously, is the range.
08:31It's got massive battery, 109 kilowatt hours, and that just means you're able to go further,
08:35and when you buy an electric car, that does matter.
08:38Speaking of which, if you're considering an electric car, you need to check out Gawa,
08:42because you can currently save an astonishing ÂŁ19,000 on a new BMW iX.
08:48If you want to do that now, click on the pop-out banner in the top right-hand corner of the
08:51screen, or scan the QR code on screen now.
08:54There's also a link in the description of this video.
08:56You can check out all the latest deals and all the latest cars.
08:59I don't think this is necessarily quieter than the Genesis.
09:01There's a bit more road noise, I think, in this.
09:03Also, the brakes feel more natural in this BMW than the GV70.
09:08I just nip and tuck.
09:09There's hardly anything between them.
09:10I should point out that BMW has recently upgraded this iX, so it's got a bigger battery,
09:16it's got better motors in it, and as a result, we've got more range.
09:19So, with that in mind, let's do a check-in.
09:21So far, we have done almost 49 miles, and this BMW is averaging 3 miles per kilowatt hour,
09:27which is better than the old version did.
09:29So, when I did a range test on that, I think it was like 2.7 miles per kilowatt hour.
09:32I've got 83% of my battery remaining, and that means I should be able to go a further 312 miles.
09:40Let's see how everyone else is doing.
09:42Polestar, give us your numbers.
09:44So, I'm averaging 29.7 kilowatt hours per 100 miles, which works out to 3.4 miles per kilowatt hour.
09:51I've got 85% battery left, and that is estimating 290 miles of range.
09:57Audi?
09:583.2 miles per kilowatt hour.
10:01My battery is at 85%, and apparently that means I can go 243 miles.
10:07Genesis?
10:083.1 miles per kilowatt hour.
10:11I've got 82% of my battery remaining, and it's saying I can go a further 222 miles.
10:17Finally, the Kia.
10:193.1 miles per kilowatt hour.
10:21I have 85% of my battery left, and that works out to 294 miles of range remaining.
10:27It's interesting.
10:28They're all doing about the same in terms of the efficiency between 3 and 3.2 miles per kilowatt hour.
10:32So, this is going to play out based pretty much on the size of the battery, but things could change.
10:37This iX is cavernous in the back seats.
10:39Loads of headroom, even more than in the Genesis, and we've got a glass roof in as well.
10:43That's nice.
10:43There's lots of knee room, loads of foot space because you've got a totally flat floor.
10:47One of the issues I have, though, is that these seats, while very comfy, they're quite low to the floor, so there's not so much under-thigh support.
10:54Yeah, I'm not quite as comfy as in that Genesis.
10:56Let's try it with three people in the back at once, shall we?
10:58So, in your climb.
10:59This feels a bit wider, doesn't it?
11:01Yeah, absolutely.
11:01This is wider than the Genesis, so more comfortable for three in the back at once.
11:06Now, on paper, this BMW's boot is slightly smaller than the Genesis.
11:09It's 500 litres.
11:11There is some storage under there, which looks more useful than that in the Genesis.
11:16And actually, it looks bigger than the Genesis.
11:19So, we're going to find out.
11:20Can we fit two big men in here?
11:22Go on, Tommy, you're going first.
11:24Tommy's nickname is the tank.
11:26Oh, blimey.
11:27And he almost crushed that as he got in.
11:29You all right?
11:30He tanked it, yeah.
11:31Wait a minute.
11:32Now, I don't know, Rory.
11:34I think you might be too large for this.
11:36You might be able to do it, actually.
11:37Oh, you're too long, Rory, I think.
11:39No, that's not going to work.
11:40Come on, out, out.
11:42That was very close to Tommy's face.
11:43Do you know what we need?
11:44I'm sorry.
11:45Can you, Nick, take Keelan's camera?
11:47Spooning?
11:49Yeah.
11:49I think that is the worst.
11:51The way you just reversed it there.
11:54I don't think you're going to get your head in, actually.
11:56Put your head down, Keelan.
11:57Come on.
11:58Hello, friend.
11:58You've done this very bad.
12:00Did you ever play Tetris?
12:00Come on.
12:01Just take a little bump on your head.
12:03Yeah.
12:04Come on.
12:05Oh.
12:06We can close it.
12:07Just keep your head in.
12:08Tuck your head in.
12:08Put your head down, Keelan.
12:09It's as down as it goes.
12:11No, it's not.
12:12Ready?
12:12Shout.
12:12You're not even trying.
12:15That's a shot.
12:16That's a shot.
12:17That's a shot.
12:17I've escaped trying to get into the fruit
12:19because you can't actually open the bonnet on this car.
12:21It's locked away.
12:22It's for technicians only.
12:24What a missed opportunity.
12:25Speaking of which, let's talk about the design
12:26because BMW have updated this car.
12:28Slightly different front end.
12:30Slightly tweaked at the back.
12:31But it looks the same.
12:32The iX is...
12:33It looks a bit uncomfortable, doesn't it?
12:35The only angle that I really like it from is the rear.
12:37It looks quite good from the rear.
12:38But the rest of it, not so much.
12:41Let's move on to my next car, the Audi Q6 e-tron.
12:44Not going to lie.
12:44I'm a little bit disappointed with this Audi.
12:46So it starts from ÂŁ61,000.
12:48For this motor battery combination, it starts from ÂŁ65,000.
12:52Though in this trim level, it's ÂŁ67,000.
12:53This one with all the options on it,
12:55such as a really snazzy heads-up display,
12:57which I'll show you a clip of now.
12:58ÂŁ71,000.
13:00Currently, you can save over ÂŁ9,000
13:01if you buy a Q6 e-tron through CarWow.
13:04That could make all the difference
13:05because this particular version of the Q6 e-tron has a problem.
13:08I feel like you're getting a bit short-changed
13:11because you've got one electromotor.
13:13It's rear-wheel drive only.
13:14You've got 306 horsepower and 485 newton-meters.
13:18As a result, it just doesn't have the punch
13:19of the other two cars I've driven so far.
13:22Handling-wise, it feels pretty sharp.
13:24It's not on adaptive suspension.
13:25You can get air suspension as an option.
13:27This one doesn't have it fitted.
13:29It feels reasonably comfortable,
13:30but compared to the other two, there's a bit of jiggle.
13:32It's a bit less settled than the other two.
13:34Something's happened to Audi recently.
13:36The quality has gone downhill, and a perfect example is this.
13:40The door bin.
13:41Scratchy plastic down here.
13:43Also, just the materials just aren't as nice
13:45as they used to be in other Audis before it.
13:47I think the previous Audi e-tron just feels nicer inside.
13:50They're like the new infotainment system that they've done.
13:52Once again, it's not a single screen.
13:54There's like two screens separate.
13:56A lot of bezel happening.
13:57You can get an optional screen for the passenger,
14:00but look, we've just got black trim,
14:01and it's just reflecting what's going on outside,
14:04and that's quite distracting.
14:05It really is a shame.
14:06Infotainment system's harder to use than before.
14:09They've gone for dark graphics.
14:10I much prefer the previous generation than the Audis,
14:12and it's better than the BMW at least,
14:14but not by far.
14:15I prefer the Genesis system, to tell you the truth.
14:17Do you know what else?
14:18ÂŁ71,000 car, and I've got manual seat adjustment.
14:22I mean, what?
14:25What?
14:26At least with this car, you do get a decent-sized battery.
14:2895 kilowatt hours.
14:30So shall we do a check-in and see how it's comparing to the others?
14:33So we've done 76 miles.
14:34I'm averaging 3.3 miles per kilowatt hour.
14:37I've got 78% of the battery remaining,
14:39which apparently is good for 228 miles.
14:42Let's compare it to the Genesis first off.
14:453.3 miles per kilowatt hour.
14:47I've got 72% of my battery remaining,
14:50and it's saying I can go another 193 miles.
14:55OK, and Kia?
14:573.2 miles per kilowatt hour.
14:59I have 77% of my battery left,
15:01and I should be able to do 258 miles.
15:03Polestar?
15:0428.5 kilowatt hours per 100 miles,
15:08which are axiled at 3.5 miles per kilowatt hour.
15:11I've got 78% battery,
15:13and that's saying a range of 270 miles.
15:16And finally, BMW.
15:173.2 miles per kilowatt hour.
15:19I've got 75% of my battery left,
15:21and apparently that means I can go another 291 miles.
15:25OK, so that's quite interesting.
15:27This Audi is one of the most efficient
15:29at 3.3 miles per kilowatt hour.
15:31I think this range might be a little bit pessimistic,
15:33so we might get a bit more out of it.
15:35It's definitely going to go further than that Genesis.
15:38So while I prefer the Genesis,
15:40you know, if it's outright range you want,
15:41this is going to be a better car,
15:43we think for now.
15:44But I'm going to jump in another car in a moment,
15:46and we'll see how that one compares.
15:49But before I do that,
15:50the Audi has one more chance to redeem itself
15:52as I check out the back seats.
15:54This feels smaller in the back
15:55than the Genesis and the BMW especially.
15:57Less knee room, there's still a decent amount.
15:59Headroom, actually, that's on a par with the others.
16:02Foot space isn't, though,
16:03but this seat is quite raised up,
16:05so you can slide your feet underneath.
16:06And I do think that this seat
16:08is further from the floor than in the BMW,
16:10so actually, in some ways, it's more comfortable.
16:13Let's try it with three in the back at once.
16:18Tightest?
16:18Yes.
16:19This is the worst.
16:20Tightest fit so far.
16:22Big capacity on this Audi, 526 litres,
16:24so it's the largest so far.
16:26We've got some storage under here.
16:28Okay, remember, you've got to stand to the load cover.
16:30It looks quite snug,
16:30but can we get Rory in there?
16:32Right, Sam, do you want to...
16:33Rory, can you cough, please?
16:34What's that in your pocket?
16:35I think this is going to work.
16:37Wait, wait, wait.
16:38Let me just keep that light.
16:40If we can get a shot like this...
16:42Right, here we go.
16:43Ready? Ready?
16:44We're going to do some pushing here.
16:46Keep it going, Sam, keep it going.
16:48There we go.
16:49That's in.
16:50Good.
16:52I think you might...
16:53If I need to go to hospital after that...
16:54I heard a scream.
16:55That wasn't good, was it?
16:56So far,
16:57this is winning the boot test.
16:59Let's see if I'm getting in here.
17:00Yeah, look at this.
17:02This is pretty decent.
17:06I'm going to end up wedged.
17:08Yeah, I think I might be wedged.
17:10I mean, this obviously won't shut,
17:11but at least I've got my bottom in it.
17:14Yeah, it is an inoffensive car to look at.
17:16I quite like the paint on this.
17:18It's a really nice colour.
17:19And these features as well.
17:20They get the creases down the side much better than the Genesis.
17:23Yeah, it makes sense to me there.
17:25And it's got quite a nice rear end as well.
17:27So far, this is my favourite to look at.
17:30Now, we're at Trial Services.
17:32And they have four medium-speed charging bays.
17:35And then one low-speed charging bay.
17:37Not really good enough, is it, in 2025?
17:40Sorry, Audi fanboys,
17:42but I prefer this Kia than the Audi.
17:43It actually is nicer on the inside as well.
17:46The design is really good, really slick.
17:48Infertainment screen, really nicely laid out.
17:50Also, I like the fact that we've got physical buttons here
17:52for the climate, temperature, stuff.
17:54That's good.
17:55Driver's display, easy to read.
17:57And it's quite a relaxing car to drive.
17:59So we haven't got any adaptive suspension or anything like that.
18:01But it feels a little bit nicer than the Audi.
18:03The steering's light.
18:04It's quiet.
18:05You get a good view out.
18:06Huge flat bonnet.
18:07Sort of gives me Land Rover vibes.
18:10Quality, I think it's better than the Audi.
18:12Yes, there's some harder materials down here, like in the Audi.
18:15But, you know, this car is ÂŁ65,000,
18:18as I've got it here, right?
18:20And you've got stuff like blind spot cameras as well
18:22to warn you when you're changing lanes.
18:23Don't know that stuff on the Audi.
18:25You probably get it, but it's going to cost you way more.
18:27Where this car is lacking, though, is the motor.
18:29It's got single motor on the rear with just 203 horsepower
18:32and 350 newton metres of torque.
18:35That means at motorway speeds, when you want to nip past someone,
18:38you have to pre-plan what you're going to do.
18:40It just feels a little bit too slow for an electric car.
18:42And when you consider that it's got seven seats,
18:44if you've got seven people in this car,
18:46it's going to feel really, really quite sluggish.
18:49So you are probably going to want to spend more
18:50and get a more powerful version of the EV9.
18:53While we're slowing down, good point to tell you that the brakes,
18:55they're quite smooth and progressive, not too grabby.
18:57It's quite a quiet car to travel in,
18:59apart from the beeps and bongs you get
19:00if you do things the car doesn't like.
19:02It's the attention warning,
19:03because I was looking around at the glove box,
19:05and rightly so, had my eyes off the road.
19:07I can't really tell just driving on the motorway,
19:08but I remember the handling was all right in this car.
19:11But it is heavy, 2.5 tonnes,
19:13so one of the heaviest here.
19:14And that does affect how it'll go down a twisty road.
19:16While this car might not be the quickest,
19:18it does have a very big battery, 100 kilowatt hours.
19:22Now, that's partly to blame for its rather heavy weight.
19:25So, let's do a quick mileage check.
19:28We've done 102 miles.
19:29I'm averaging 3.2 miles per kilowatt hour,
19:32which is all right.
19:33We've got 70% of the battery remaining,
19:36which the car reckons is good for 219 miles.
19:40Anyway, let's find out how the Genesis is doing.
19:433.3 miles per kilowatt hour.
19:45I've got 64% of my battery remaining,
19:48and it's saying I can do another 169 miles.
19:52Short day for the Genesis.
19:53Now, let's have the Audi.
19:563.3 miles per kilowatt hour.
19:58I've got 70% of my battery left,
20:00and that reckons it can do 205 miles.
20:03BMW.
20:043.2 miles per kilowatt hour.
20:07It has 68% of its battery left,
20:09and that should be good for 258 miles.
20:11And finally, the Polestar.
20:1428.6 kilowatt hours per 100 miles,
20:17which works out at 3.5 miles per kilowatt hour.
20:21I'm showing 71% battery,
20:23and that is saying 250 miles.
20:26Ooh, so it looks like the BMW is going to go the furthest.
20:29One last check-in.
20:30The Skoda Superb.
20:31Let me explain.
20:32This is our camera car,
20:33a brand-new Skoda Superb
20:35with a 193 horsepower 2-litre diesel engine.
20:37It should be perfect for long motorway journeys such as this,
20:40and I'm curious to see how its range compares to these electric cars,
20:43despite not even starting with a full tank of fuel.
20:46Hello, Skoda Superb.
20:48Can you just tell me how many more miles of range is left in your tank?
20:52I've got 255 miles left in my tank.
20:56Oh, this is going to be interesting.
20:57Are all these expensive electric cars going to get shamed by a more affordable diesel?
21:01And all the cars I've driven so far,
21:03this Kia is the roomiest in the back.
21:05Loads of headroom, loads of knee room,
21:08plenty of foot space.
21:09Front seats are raised up so you can really stretch out.
21:12This seat base is quite away from the floor,
21:14so you've got lots of under-thigh support.
21:16You can slide the base for more room back there,
21:19or for more knee room here,
21:21and you can recline these seat backs quite away.
21:23Look how comfy this is.
21:25Now, though, we want to try it with three people in the back at once.
21:27Oh, that's good, yeah.
21:28Best so far?
21:28Definitely.
21:29Absolutely.
21:29Best so far.
21:30Now I'm going to try the very back seat,
21:31so if you wouldn't mind just hopping out,
21:33and I'll clamber into the third row.
21:36Okay, so press that button, pop that forward.
21:38These seats are quite well off the floor for third row seats,
21:42so that's good.
21:42Let me just pull this down.
21:44Okay, so that is a bit tight,
21:46but Nick, would you mind just jumping in here
21:48and getting yourself to a position that you're happy with knee-wise?
21:52Right, have you got just about enough space?
21:54That's great.
21:54I've got enough space.
21:56There's enough foot room.
21:57These are quite good for third row chairs,
22:00and look, I can even recline these seat backs.
22:04They go far.
22:05They go back farther.
22:06That is...
22:07I'm really impressed with this car.
22:10With all the seats in place,
22:11the Kia's boot capacity is 333 litres,
22:14which is big enough for...
22:16a Keelan.
22:19Will it shut?
22:19Will it shut?
22:20Will it shut?
22:20So I would say that that is a definite pass.
22:23Now let's fold the third row down
22:26and see how many people we can get in.
22:29So I can fold down the third row by pressing these buttons here.
22:32Whoop, whoop.
22:33Right, and what I'm going to do,
22:35as with other cars,
22:36we're going to try and fit people underneath the load cover.
22:38Okay then, so, Rory, I think we'll go with you first.
22:42There's plenty of space, but it's not very deep,
22:45so you're going to have to try and limbo under there if you can.
22:47It's under here.
22:48You tuck away.
22:49There we go.
22:50Right, I think it's going to have to be Nick.
22:51I don't think we're going to fit a Tommy in there.
22:53Here we go.
22:54I've just had sushi.
22:55Oh, have you?
22:56Oh, yeah, I can tell.
22:57Okay, so, I think this is going to be a pass.
23:01Yeah, Nick's bottom is in far enough.
23:04So, 828 litres of space.
23:08Job done.
23:09The front boot is easily the biggest by far.
23:12Look at that.
23:13I should be able to get in there, no problem.
23:15Might even be able to get my feet in as well.
23:17Look.
23:20Could have a little bath in there, yeah?
23:22The EV9 is basically just a big rectangle.
23:24It sort of looks like an overweight estate car,
23:27but somewhere or other, they've made it look cool
23:29with all the lines or the different coloured bodywork,
23:32all the creases.
23:33I think, visually, this is the most exciting car so far.
23:36We're now at Woodall North services,
23:37and there are some charging trucks here.
23:39We've got three speed ones over there,
23:41and there's a probably six speed one there.
23:43So, that's enough.
23:45There's also more on the southbound.
23:47There's even more on the southbound than the northbound,
23:49and that seems a theme.
23:50People going north don't need to charge the cars.
23:52People going south have electric cars.
23:54I don't know.
23:55But I do know it's time to drive
23:56the very last car in this group.
23:58This is a new single-motor version of the Polestar 3.
24:01It's the entry-level model.
24:03It starts from just under ÂŁ70,000,
24:05though this one has quite a lot of kit on it,
24:07and it's like ÂŁ86,000
24:08because we've got stuff like the adaptive cruise control,
24:11which should be standard, really, when you think about it.
24:13We've got the sunroof on it.
24:15There's loads of other bits of kit,
24:16like the heads-up display, which is useful.
24:18So, you've got a 300-horsepower motor driving the rear wheels,
24:21delivers 490-newton-metres of torque.
24:23That's enough oomph for pickup on the motorway.
24:26Feels quicker than the Kia, which is too slow,
24:28but it doesn't have the zip of the BMW nor the Genesis.
24:31In terms of the comfort,
24:32this one doesn't have the air suspension light
24:35you can get on the dual-motor version,
24:36and that air suspension really makes this car
24:38just feel super luxurious the way it goes down the road.
24:41But it's still good on this normal suspension.
24:43Occasionally, when you go over bigger bumps,
24:44it's a bit of a jolt,
24:45but that's because this car is quite heavy,
24:47weighs at 2.4 tonnes.
24:49Despite that, it feels fairly responsive,
24:51and the steering wheel feels very nice to hold.
24:53This particular model has a vegan interior.
24:55It feels really good, actually.
24:56The quality is solid.
24:58I like the design.
24:59Quite simplistic.
25:00This big screen here with lots of information on it,
25:02but you have to control everything through it.
25:05Though at least there is an easy shortcut button
25:07to the climate control.
25:09Though it's not as easy as just flicking the switch up and down,
25:10like on the Kia.
25:11I don't like the digital driver's display, really, though,
25:14because it's a bit too small
25:15and doesn't give you that much information.
25:17Visibility-wise, good door mirrors.
25:19Though I need to move these,
25:20and I don't know how because there's no switches for it here.
25:22So I'm assuming it is through the screen.
25:25How do I do that, I wonder?
25:26Also, if I want to put the rear windows down,
25:29I've only got two switches,
25:30so you have to toggle between front and rear.
25:32That's just an awful cost-saving measure.
25:34I hate it when manufacturers do that.
25:35The rest of the car, though, feels quite expensive
25:37and very solid.
25:38Overall, I like it.
25:39I like it more than the Audi.
25:42Weird thing is, though, we've all said
25:43we prefer being in the Kia.
25:45Believe it or not, we prefer the Kia.
25:47Shall I try and move that mirror?
25:49Shall I try?
25:49How do you reckon you do it?
25:50A car.
25:51It's going to be a bit of a car, but...
25:52Driver adjustments.
25:53There we go.
25:54I'm trying to do this while driving.
25:56Is he going to let me?
25:57Okay.
26:03Well, that's going to have to do.
26:05Now, if you want to make sure
26:06that you're wearing the right car for you,
26:07you can actually get some advice from me personally
26:09through my alter ego,
26:10my chatbot, which is powered by AI,
26:12called Matt GPT.
26:14So you can ask it any question
26:15and it will try and give you a good answer.
26:17To check that out now,
26:18just click on the pop-out banner
26:19in the top right-hand corner of the screen
26:21or scroll down the QR code on screen now.
26:23There's also a link in the description below.
26:25You can also just Google
26:26Help Me Car Wow
26:27to chat to Matt GPT.
26:30Go check it out,
26:30see if you like it,
26:31and let me know in the comments.
26:32This Polestar does have the biggest battery
26:34at 110 kilowatt hours,
26:36so it should, in theory,
26:38go the furthest.
26:39And so far, we've done 155 miles.
26:42Average consumption on this
26:43is 29.4 kilowatt hours
26:45per 100 miles,
26:46which works out to 3.4 miles per kilowatt hour.
26:49I've got 55% of the battery remaining,
26:53and that's good for an extra 180 miles to go.
26:57Oh, there's a fair distance ahead of us,
26:59but what about the other cars?
27:00Let's see how the BMW is doing.
27:043.2 miles per kilowatt hour.
27:07I have a battery saying 53%,
27:09and that has given me a range of 204 miles.
27:13What?
27:13That can't be right.
27:15There must be some form of miscalculation
27:16in the projected range.
27:18It's going to be interesting
27:19how this works out in the end.
27:21Now let's try the Kia.
27:233.2 miles per kilowatt hour.
27:25I have 53% of my battery left,
27:27and that should take me another 161 miles.
27:30It's quite close to this.
27:32Next, Audi.
27:343.4 miles per kilowatt hour.
27:36I have 54% of my battery left,
27:39which should mean I can go 165 miles,
27:41so it's getting better,
27:42and I'm a bit worried.
27:43And finally, the Genesis.
27:453.4 miles per kilowatt hour.
27:48I've got 45% of my battery remaining,
27:51and it's saying I'm going to do 122 miles.
27:54Okay, Genesis, clearly off the pace.
27:58That'll be leaving us first,
27:59but what's going to happen with the others?
28:01Because these numbers are quite close.
28:05However, before we continue
28:06with the final leg of this test,
28:07I need to see what this Polestar
28:08is like in the back seats.
28:10Look, loads of knee room,
28:11loads of head room,
28:12but I'm not as comfortable as I was
28:14in the middle row of that Kia EV9,
28:16and part of the reason is
28:17this seat is just a little bit closer to the floor.
28:19These seats are lower,
28:20so I can't quite squeeze my feet underneath,
28:22though there is still plenty of foot space
28:23that I can just sit like that
28:27instead of a bit more leisurely and relaxed.
28:30There's no ability to slide or recline the seats,
28:33which is a shame,
28:34but the quality in here is really, really good.
28:38Let's find out what the others think,
28:39so let's try three in the back at once.
28:41This middle seat's quite low, actually.
28:43They're a bit parched,
28:44but this one's lower.
28:46A bit tighter than the Kia, isn't it?
28:47It is on the shoulders.
28:49Yeah, yeah.
28:49It's not as comfortable, though.
28:50It's not, is it?
28:51No.
28:51It's the low seat that does it, doesn't it?
28:53It just knackers it.
28:54Oh, well.
28:55The Pulsar has the smallest boot capacity,
28:56484 litres.
28:58I also can't find where the switch is to open it.
29:01Oh, there it is.
29:02Let's start off with you, Rory.
29:03Actually, wait, wait, I've got to point this out.
29:04There's 90 litres under there.
29:07It's not a good start.
29:09Nick, I think...
29:11I think it's...
29:12If we can get you in there, that'd be good.
29:15Good?
29:16Well, not for you.
29:18It would be a thing,
29:19and you've got to get into this low cover.
29:20I'll be gentle, Rory.
29:22Do you know what?
29:23This may be possible.
29:25I'm not sure.
29:26I might have to help you a bit.
29:27Bloody hell.
29:27Sorry.
29:28Let's try again.
29:29It's stuck on my eye.
29:31Okay.
29:32Just leave your eye alone.
29:33Ready?
29:34Ready?
29:34Ready?
29:36How's your eye?
29:38Yeah, blind.
29:39No.
29:40Keelan?
29:41Well, sorry.
29:41Let's just release this.
29:42Ah!
29:43It's stuck on my earloin.
29:46Wait, wait, wait.
29:47You all right?
29:50Okay?
29:52It's not okay.
29:53That was very unpleasant.
29:54Keelan, you know, you're up.
29:56I think your head could go in there nicely.
29:58Get your head down there.
29:59I had dragon rolls for lunch.
30:01Right.
30:02You ready, Keelan?
30:03We've just got to get this part of you in.
30:04I'm not sure, actually, whether...
30:08Done.
30:10Let's find out if the Polestar has a front boot.
30:13Yes, it does.
30:17It's not as good as the one on the Kia.
30:20Definitely better than the one on the BMW.
30:22I'd say it's probably the third best fruit.
30:25This Polestar is a good-looking car, but is it my favourite?
30:27I don't think so.
30:28Visually, I prefer the Kia, then this, then the Genesis, then the Audi, and last, and by
30:34all means least, the BMW.
30:35I'll see how these cars compare in terms of range soon, but as soon as I got back on
30:39the road, the Polestar 3 started doing something a little unusual.
30:43Sort of coasts, and it's very hard to maintain speed sometimes because it goes too quickly.
30:48You lift off the accelerator, it doesn't slow down like you'd imagine it would.
30:51It just seems to just freewheel.
30:53Now, when I did the range check-in, it was 155 miles.
30:56We're now at 161, almost 162.
30:59And it's still saying 180 miles of range left.
31:02Yes.
31:03This is going to be closer than you think with that BMW.
31:07It might even beat it.
31:09163 miles, 180 miles left still.
31:13Witchcraft.
31:14Genesis here.
31:15I've just had my first low battery warning.
31:18Oh, dear.
31:19Oh, dear.
31:20We've only done 232 miles.
31:22How much battery have you got left?
31:2416% of my charge left, and I've got 42 miles of predicted range.
31:29Has the car slowed down any, or is it still giving you full power?
31:33Yeah, it's limited me to 90% power now.
31:36Ooh, interesting.
31:37Well, I don't mean to gloat, but I've got 35% of my battery remaining, and that's good for 110 miles.
31:43The question is, though, how's everyone else doing?
31:45In the Audi, I am doing 3.3 miles per kilowatt hour.
31:49I have 28% of my battery left, and that should mean that I can go 78 miles.
31:56Kia.
31:56We are 3.2 miles per kilowatt hour.
31:59I have 28% of my battery left, and that gives me 86 miles of remaining range.
32:04Ooh, close to me.
32:06And BMW, this is the competition.
32:08I think this is where we're going to end up.
32:10It looks like a competition I, unfortunately, am going to win and don't want to.
32:13I've got 3.3 miles per kilowatt hour.
32:15I've got 31% battery and incredibly 118 horrible miles left.
32:21Ooh, eight more miles than me, but I'm slowly catching up, aren't I?
32:26Ooh, it's going to be really interesting to find out which out of the pulse on the BMW is going to go the furthest.
32:31It should be this, but at the moment, it's not looking that way.
32:34Ooh, I've got an idea.
32:37Skoda, how many miles have you got left in your tank?
32:40150.
32:42What?
32:43So we're all trying to get to Edinburgh, and how far is it to Edinburgh, Jack?
32:48It's about 130 miles.
32:50So the Skoda will get to Edinburgh, no problem, probably beyond.
32:54Do we reckon this will?
32:56It's going to be close.
32:58I don't think the BMW will.
32:59I think I'm going to come past the BMW in terms of actual total range.
33:03Genesis here, are we allowed to use Eco mode once we've reached low battery?
33:07Well, Genesis, if you're going to be driving a long distance in your electric car and you get a battery warning, what are you going to do?
33:13Are you going to go into Sports mode and drive really quickly, or are you going to go into Eco mode and just take it steady?
33:18Thanks for the answer.
33:19I didn't need to be such a dick about it, but I'm feeling kind of smug right now with my 110 miles of range.
33:25Do you ever have that wonder when you're like Google Maps and it's giving you a little cheeky diversion when the road is busy at a junction like this?
33:31We're going to see whether you should take that diversion.
33:33We've got Sam in the BMW there.
33:34He's going to carry straight on.
33:35I'm going to take the junction, see if I can get ahead of him.
33:37If I get caught by these lights, I could lose.
33:40If I don't, I could be winning.
33:42I'm having to drive up a blooming hill.
33:43This is not good for my range.
33:45And the lights have changed.
33:46How is this car like going this quick up the hill and I'm not touching the accelerator?
33:50Look, how's this happening?
33:52I can see them moving down there.
33:53Oh, this is tense.
33:54Come on, change.
33:55Change, it's going to change.
33:57Oh, here we go.
33:57Come on.
33:58I can't accelerate too quickly because of range.
34:02Come on.
34:02Where are they?
34:03Ah, no, he did it.
34:05Ha ha, I heard that.
34:07How far ahead am I?
34:08How many cars?
34:10I've got three cars ahead.
34:11Where are you guys?
34:12I can't even see you.
34:13As long as you can cope with the shame of being that guy, Matt.
34:16We're also in the wrong lane now.
34:17Okay, so lesson is when Google tells you to make that diversion, you better take it.
34:22No one hated me.
34:23Not a single beep.
34:24Everyone was cool about it.
34:25People at North are lovely.
34:27Oh, there he is.
34:30He's finally caught up.
34:33Sam don't like losing.
34:35Even pointless little challenges.
34:37Genesis here.
34:37I've just had my second range warning, so I'm going to have to come off at the next junction, unfortunately.
34:42I've got 24 miles left, 9% of my battery.
34:46There's no fast charger beyond this point for another over 30 miles, I think, so I'm definitely going to have to come off here.
34:52Okay, see you later.
34:54Good luck.
34:54Look, we'll keep in touch and we'll see how far you actually go from this point onwards and your total mileage until you're empty.
35:02See you soon.
35:03Or maybe not, because I've got 100 miles left and we've got 150 miles to Edinburgh.
35:09Ooh, this is doable.
35:13Nick in the Kia here.
35:14I have just had my first battery warning.
35:1620% charge remaining and I've got a big screen on my dash saying low EV.
35:22Visit a nearby charging station.
35:24Power seems fine and I've got 63 miles remaining.
35:27That is plenty.
35:28We've done 260 miles so far, so you're definitely going to get well over the 300.
35:34Anyone else got less than 20% of their battery?
35:38I have 21% left in the Audi.
35:40Ooh.
35:41I have 24% left in the BMW.
35:45And I have 28% left.
35:47BMW, what's your remaining range then?
35:50Disgustingly, 99 miles it's saying.
35:53I'm so catching you up.
35:55I've got 95 miles an hour.
35:57I'm getting closer to you.
35:58If I have to push this further than you go, I will, just so you know that.
36:03That's if it doesn't just like lock its wheels like they sometimes do.
36:06So I will enjoy watching you trying to push a two and a half ton BMW with its brakes on.
36:12Cleverly enough, this has got a neutral button, so I will be ahead of the curve.
36:15And if I feel something happening, I'm going to bang it into neutral.
36:19This is Rory in the Audi.
36:21I just hit 20% battery and it's fired up a warning saying it's going to put itself into eco mode.
36:27So it's reduced what I can see on the driver's dials and I have 62 miles remaining.
36:32That's still plenty of miles remaining, so keep on going.
36:35Quite good that it puts itself in auto eco mode.
36:38Makes complete sense.
36:39Hey guys, Jack in the Skoda.
36:42I am now in my fuel reserve and have 80 miles of range remaining.
36:47Oh, 80 miles of range.
36:50I have 70 and 21% battery and we have done 284 miles so far.
36:56Average energy consumption, 29.2 kilowatts per 100 miles.
37:01So 3.4 miles per kilowatt hour.
37:03Going good, but will I make it to Edinburgh?
37:06Kia, how are you doing?
37:073.3 miles per kilowatt hour, so that's getting slightly better.
37:10I've got 11% of my battery remaining and that should take me 34 miles.
37:15How do you do?
37:163.4 miles per kilowatt hour.
37:18I have 13% of my battery left and that means I should go 37 miles.
37:25And the big one, BMW, where are you at?
37:28I'm rocking along at 3.3 miles per kilowatt hour.
37:32I have 16% battery, no sign of a warning and it's saying 68 miles left.
37:39Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes.
37:41I've got more battery, better energy consumption, a larger battery anyway and 70 miles of range remaining.
37:48We're going to have that BMW victory.
37:51Will it be mine?
37:51This is what you don't want when you're trying to make a certain destination and you've already got not enough charge remaining.
38:00You don't want to have to suddenly accelerate it to overtake a very slow moving vehicle that's holding everybody up.
38:08Oh.
38:10Obviously he's got a full battery and he's taken.
38:13This is Roaring the Audi, I just dropped to 30 miles of range and I've got a new warning.
38:17He said please charge battery and I've got a yellow battery symbol on my driver's dials.
38:22Have you lost any performance from the car?
38:24The car seems maybe it's dulled a little bit.
38:27It's telling me to just drive at 55 miles an hour but I can exceed that, no problem at all.
38:32So not yet, no, still got 30 miles of range.
38:34Well, I'm at 20% battery and I've had no warnings yet.
38:38I think it's time for another check-in.
38:39So we've done 311 miles, averaging 28.7 kilowatt hours per 100 miles and that works out to 3.5 miles per kilowatt hour.
38:48So that's pretty decent.
38:50I've got 16% battery left and 55 miles remaining.
38:53If I just go on here, it's saying that it's 58 miles to the centre of Edinburgh.
38:57Are we going to do it?
38:58I think we might do.
38:58Let's see how the others are doing.
39:00In particular, the BMW, which is my main competition.
39:03BMW, give me your numbers, please.
39:063.4 miles per kilowatt hour.
39:08I have 11% battery left and this is saying a claimed 48 miles.
39:13Oh, we're ahead now.
39:14We're ahead.
39:15Kia?
39:16It's still doing 3.3 miles per kilowatt hour but I only have 3% of my battery left and that's only 9 miles of range.
39:23So it won't be long before I say farewell.
39:26And Audi?
39:28It's now doing 3.5 miles per kilowatt hour.
39:31I have 5% of my battery remaining and apparently that means I can do 16 miles.
39:36So what is your plan, Audi and Kia?
39:39I'm going to push on to Edinburgh.
39:40I assume BMW will do too.
39:42Audi, what are you going to do?
39:44I'm going to try and make it to the Scottish border as a symbolic win.
39:48And then I'm going to probably turn around and come back to Veracomptuede and then go back to Scotland.
39:53And then come back to Veracomptuede until I run out safely near a charger.
39:58Okay.
39:59And what about the Kia?
40:01Same strategy?
40:02Exactly the same.
40:03Although probably shorter because I'm now down to 2% battery.
40:06So it's going to be a brief trip to Scotland, I think, if at all.
40:10Let's see if you can make it.
40:11You should push on and try.
40:13Have you got reduced power from your motors, seeing as you're on 2%?
40:17Yeah, I'd say it's probably about 50% power, if that.
40:20But I've not had a warning come up for a while.
40:22Right, and so it's competition between me and you, BMW.
40:25Let's see what happens.
40:27Warning, limited performance.
40:29So it's getting real in here.
40:30There's the Scottish border.
40:32There's the Scottish border.
40:33Make it.
40:34We're going to turn around just after the Scottish border.
40:35Yes!
40:37There they are.
40:38We're now turning off.
40:39We're now turning off.
40:40And we're getting over that bridge ahead and coming back.
40:42So see you later.
40:44It's been emotional.
40:44There they go.
40:46There they go.
40:48They made it to Scotland.
40:50Well done.
40:52It's power limited in the Kia.
40:53So I wonder if it's going to make it back to Berwick and get to the charger.
40:56I don't know what happened to that.
40:58It's suddenly just lost loads of battery towards that end part there.
41:01Did he just gamble and lose?
41:04He's going to be stranded.
41:06Anyway, I'm going to continue on to Edinburgh.
41:09Oh, wait there.
41:09All that messing about has cost me.
41:11I'm down at 40% now and 45 miles and it's 52 miles to Edinburgh.
41:15Oh, oh dear.
41:17Beautiful view though.
41:18So I had my first warning in the BMW.
41:22Well, I say warning.
41:22It just gave me a range.
41:24Well, it said 40 miles.
41:25I've just gone down to 35 now.
41:27I'm running at 3.4 miles per kilowatt hour.
41:29I'm down to 8% battery.
41:31Interesting.
41:31So I'm on 40 miles, 13% battery.
41:34I think I'm going to make Edinburgh.
41:36You might make the outskirts.
41:37What's your plans regarding charging?
41:39So I found a hotel that is well known and that is 41 miles away.
41:45I've got 34 left.
41:46I'm hoping that's going to have a charging station in it.
41:49You're hoping?
41:50If you put the destination into your car, it might actually say if there's a charger there.
41:56I have just gone down to 30 miles and it's 35 miles away.
42:01So, **** got real.
42:02So, Sam, it looks like you've got some fast chargers about 35 miles away.
42:07You've got 30 miles of range.
42:08If you're lucky, there's enough reserve in the battery to get you there.
42:12But what you need to do is put your car into eco mode.
42:15And actually, in the BMW, there's even a special range extend mode which you might want to activate,
42:19which could be the difference between conking out on the highway or making it to the chargers.
42:24You're a gentleman and a scholar.
42:25That just gave me three miles of extra range on my clock.
42:29So, thank you.
42:30OK, so I've actually had my first warning and it said charge status low, charge vehicle.
42:36I mean, I needed that warning 10 miles ago.
42:40This is leaving me really nothing to work with, is it?
42:42Well, no, not at all.
42:44Oh, well.
42:45Hopefully, you'll make those chargers with that extra bit of range you've just managed to acquire.
42:49Hello, this is Geoff in the Skoda.
42:52How many miles do you have on your clock still now?
42:5635 miles.
42:57I'll make it right to the centre of Edinburgh.
42:59That's interesting.
43:00How many miles have you got left in your Skoda?
43:02And now it's saying 30 miles.
43:04Oh, so there's a battle between electric versus diesel.
43:08So, we've been doing really well.
43:10It's now saying that I'm going to arrive at the destination of central Edinburgh with minus 1% battery.
43:15We've got that down from minus 13.
43:17Definitely going to make the centre of Edinburgh.
43:19Look, 35 miles on here.
43:2335 miles on there.
43:25I'm really liking this pole style.
43:27We've bonded.
43:28Oh, oh, oh.
43:29Hello, look.
43:30My remaining battery is down at 10% and it's gone orange as a warning.
43:35But that is the only warning I have.
43:36Throttle response seems very similar.
43:38I'm not too worried though.
43:3930 miles left.
43:4031 to the centre of Edinburgh.
43:43Good news, good news.
43:44We're going to arrive at the destination with 0%.
43:47I think we can go a bit further.
43:49Now something's come up.
43:50It says drive power reduced charge.
43:52It doesn't say please charge.
43:54It's a bit passive aggressive, this car.
43:55And there's a little turtle.
43:56I don't know what that's supposed to tell me.
43:58Okay, I've got 5% battery and 15 miles.
44:02I've got 1% battery and 9 miles.
44:05And I'm 7.4 away.
44:08That's weird.
44:09I wonder if this battery's got lots in reserve once it goes to 0 miles.
44:13We'll find out.
44:14I mean, I genuinely don't know if I'm going to make this.
44:15This is just heartbreaking stuff.
44:18Right, I've got a red battery icon.
44:204%.
44:21Still got 12 miles though, Sam.
44:23Don't get too carried away.
44:24Oh my God.
44:25I've 1% one mile and I'm 1.4 from the place.
44:29Right, I'm getting off in half a mile, my people.
44:32It's been emotional.
44:33Okay.
44:33There he goes.
44:35Sam didn't quite make it to Edinburgh.
44:37Yes, I did.
44:37What are you talking about?
44:38You've got to see Arthur's seat.
44:40Otherwise, if you can't see Arthur's seat, you're not in Edinburgh.
44:42Not Edinburgh proper.
44:43I've been staring out to sea for an hour.
44:45What are you talking about?
44:47Arthur's seat.
44:49Who's he?
44:50Yeah, now I'm sat at traffic lights.
44:52Oh, the anxiety.
44:54Good luck, Sam.
44:55Thanks, guys.
44:56Bye.
44:56Right, we've just left the main A1.
44:58We're going to head off now into Edinburgh.
45:01We're going to see if we can get past the place
45:03where I conked out in the new Porsche Taycan.
45:06We shall see.
45:06When I drove it to Scotland last year,
45:08the Taycan managed 367.5 miles on a full charge,
45:12which is further than any other electric car I've ever tested.
45:16When it died, I was actually in the middle of a busy road.
45:18That's my own fault because I kept on pushing it
45:20despite the numerous warnings.
45:21And that's what I'm going to do in this test as well.
45:23Hopefully, with the Polestar,
45:25I won't be in the middle of the road at the time.
45:27But I had started to notice a different problem.
45:29It was taking such a long time to run out of charge
45:31that the crew and I needed to eat.
45:33So we stopped for some dinner
45:34and I decided to call the other drivers
45:35to find out how their cars were doing.
45:37Hey, Tommy. How are you doing?
45:39The Genesis finally died.
45:40So how many miles did you do?
45:41It did 268 before it hit zero
45:44and then 279 in total.
45:47Well, so 11 miles after it said it was empty.
45:49What was your average efficiency?
45:513.4 miles per kilowatt.
45:52As soon as it hit 5%,
45:54it just gradually tapered off the power.
45:56And then after it hit 0%,
45:58it would go like 30-odd miles an hour
46:00and then it just gently came to a stop
46:03that locked itself in park.
46:05But thankfully there is a button
46:08under the centre console.
46:09Press that, it goes into neutral.
46:10Managed to push it to a charger
46:12and it's charging.
46:13Well, just so you know, Tommy,
46:14my car's still going
46:15so I'm like, you know,
46:17starting to drive around.
46:18I'm pretty exhausted, to tell you the truth.
46:19Yeah, it's madness.
46:20Listen, I'm going to check on the other guys.
46:22Hey, Rory, how's it going?
46:23So I went to Scotland twice
46:26and then circled around on the A1,
46:28got slower and slower,
46:30then went into a housing estate
46:31and then it conked out
46:33and I went into limp mode,
46:34switched it off,
46:35switched it back on again.
46:36I was probably 200 metres from the charger.
46:39I got a little way,
46:40it conked out again
46:41and then I switched it off,
46:42on again,
46:43limped it up to the charger
46:44and then it completely died
46:46and I was four millimetres away
46:49from being able to plug it in.
46:51But luckily,
46:52my good friend Nick was nearby
46:53and he was still going
46:55so he helped me push it back
46:56and I got it onto the charger
46:58so it was all good in the end.
46:59So how many miles did you do in the end?
47:01So it was actually 325 miles on the nose.
47:05That's pretty good.
47:05And how many of those miles were done
47:07when it said it was actually empty?
47:08Two and a half miles beyond zero, yeah.
47:10Oh, so not much leeway then?
47:12No, it was pretty brutal actually, yeah.
47:14And what was your overall efficiency?
47:153.4 miles per kilowatt hour.
47:18Hello, Matt.
47:18Hello, you all right?
47:19Yeah, not too much.
47:20I finally, finally died.
47:22Oh no.
47:23How was it for you?
47:25I made it into Scotland.
47:26I managed to turn around
47:27and then limp my way back
47:29south of the border
47:30on 0% battery
47:31and carried on limping around
47:33for another 12 miles.
47:3412 miles after it said it was empty?
47:36Wow, that sounds like a nightmare.
47:38So I eventually died.
47:39I managed 328.7 miles in the end.
47:43So you went the third furthest.
47:46I'm still going actually.
47:48I think the Polestar's going to definitely win.
47:50And what was your average energy consumption?
47:52It was 3.4 miles per kilowatt hour in the end.
47:56So it just kept getting better throughout the day.
47:58So all cars are pretty much doing the same actually.
48:00Anyway, I'm going to get back
48:01to concentrating on driving.
48:02I've got a few more miles left in the battery.
48:04So I better crack on.
48:05All right?
48:06Best of luck.
48:06Have a haggis on me.
48:07I will do.
48:08Probably not a haggis.
48:09I might have some kind of like Asian food, I think.
48:12All right, Sam.
48:13How are you doing?
48:13I'm good.
48:14How are you?
48:15Still struggling a little bit.
48:17I'm in traffic.
48:17Are you still going?
48:18Wow.
48:19I know.
48:19It's not bad, is it?
48:21So what happened with you?
48:22So I pulled off that station was around the corner
48:25and I was circling the car park from there
48:27and then it died and then I rolled it back
48:30and then I just got to a station.
48:32Oh, really?
48:33So how many miles did you do?
48:35366 miles in total.
48:36So my average energy was 3.4 miles per kilowatt hour.
48:40You've done the best out of the others so far,
48:42but I'm still going.
48:43I need to concentrate now though
48:44because there's a tricky junction coming ahead, okay?
48:46All right.
48:47Good luck.
48:47All right.
48:48Thank you very much.
48:48It's been tough.
48:49All right.
48:49Oh, look, it's telling me to charge.
48:51Just found me charging points.
48:5310 miles of range left in this car.
48:553% battery.
48:56Oh, look, we have the tortoise.
48:59Reduced power.
49:00Charge car as soon as possible.
49:01How far will we go?
49:03But I wasn't the only one running out of range.
49:05Cue the driver of a Skoda Superb camera car.
49:08So a bit of a development.
49:09I now have zero miles of estimated range
49:12and with this being a diesel,
49:14you wouldn't want to run it out
49:16because then it might not start again.
49:18So I need to fill up.
49:19Paul Stoll wins on all fronts.
49:21I've now done more miles than Sam, I'm sure.
49:24Oh, no, not yet.
49:25What did he have?
49:26367.
49:27Just need to get to 367 and I've got it.
49:29Here we go.
49:30We're on 366.9 miles.
49:32About to do 367 for the win.
49:36There it is.
49:37Hooray.
49:38Oh, I feel slow up here.
49:40Right, I'm going to see if I can get past the place
49:42that I drove to in the new Porsche Taycan.
49:45It's a hotel just up here where I conked out.
49:47Was it this one?
49:48Yeah.
49:49This one here?
49:50Yeah.
49:50It was here, wasn't it?
49:51Hello.
49:52I've come to visit.
49:54Anyway, still got lots of mileage left.
49:56After that trip down memory lane,
49:58I caught up with the Skoda as they were refuelling
50:00and it turned out our camera crew
50:02had been unbelievably lucky.
50:04I so nearly ran out of fuel.
50:06How many litres did you put in?
50:0865.3.
50:08And what's the tank capacity?
50:1066.
50:12Right, so you had 700 millilitres of fuel left.
50:16A pint.
50:17A pint of fuel left.
50:18Okay, 800 miles.
50:20730.
50:21730 miles.
50:23How long did it take you to fill up?
50:24You saw maybe three minutes.
50:26Okay.
50:27The pump was slow.
50:28And how much did it cost?
50:28ÂŁ89.
50:29For 730 miles.
50:31Wow.
50:32It's going to be interesting to see what it costs
50:33to fill this up for 300 or something miles.
50:36I mean, I've done 367.
50:37What's the claimed range of this?
50:39We're not doing 438.
50:41We might get 380.
50:43But there was only one way to find out.
50:45I needed to keep driving
50:47and that gave me a chance to visit a few places
50:49I used to know when I was a student living in Edinburgh.
50:51Old Bell pub.
50:52Used to get very pissed there.
50:54How much was a pint, Matt?
50:55I just want to say like a quid or something.
50:58I can't remember.
50:59It was very cheap.
51:00Look at this.
51:01Six miles of range.
51:02No, five miles of range.
51:04Right, just up here.
51:05It's the Royal Mile.
51:07A couple of streets.
51:07And there's the castle.
51:08You might be able to see it.
51:09On to Prince's Street.
51:11There used to be a shop called Tandy's on the corner there.
51:13I used to work there often with a hangover.
51:15Scott's Monument.
51:17I don't think...
51:18Except transbuses, taxes...
51:20I think we got this wrong.
51:21You guys run out there?
51:23No, I don't...
51:24I'm not sure whether we're supposed to go down there.
51:25It says except trams, buses, taxes and cycles.
51:29Oh, it's so confusing.
51:30There's the castle.
51:32Right, let's see if we can make it to the beach.
51:34So it's four miles.
51:35Oh, one percent.
51:36Battery left.
51:37Four miles still.
51:39Hmm.
51:40Where are we at with this?
51:42373 miles.
51:43Here we go.
51:44We're going to go down to the quay side.
51:46Hey.
51:47Look at this.
51:49I've never been here before.
51:51How did I miss this, living here for four years?
51:53This is brilliant.
51:55I don't know where to go now.
51:57Oh, look.
51:58No range.
51:59No battery.
52:01Let's just check the mileage.
52:03377.2.
52:04Right, so let's see how far it's going to go with no charge and no range.
52:09So six minutes to fast chargers.
52:11Oh, can we make this?
52:13Keep on rolling.
52:14Oh, yeah.
52:15There's definite loss of power.
52:18Stop safely.
52:19No range left.
52:20Well, I won't stop because it seems like I have a bit more range.
52:24We'll find out exactly how much in a moment.
52:26I mean, to be fair, that is plenty of warning.
52:30They've thought about this.
52:31We've got the amber bar.
52:32Then we've got the tortoise.
52:34Then we've got the red bar.
52:35We've got no range left.
52:37And then we've got this stop safely.
52:39How long do you have after the stop safely?
52:40So it's at 378.
52:43End of battery range is there.
52:45That's funny.
52:46So it thinks that when I go past those lights up there, I'll be at the end of my battery range.
52:51I've got a feeling we're going to carry on.
52:52Okay, so now we're just going to do some loops in an estate, so it's a safe place to run out.
52:57I wonder how long we're going to have to do this for.
52:59This is a steepy one.
53:01Are we getting up here, do you think?
53:03I thought he's on the floor.
53:05Oh, come on now.
53:07I just think I'm going to end up killing someone's cat driving around here.
53:10Oh, hello.
53:15Get up it.
53:17Never done 400 miles in an electric car before.
53:20It would be good, but I don't think it's going to happen today.
53:23Here we go.
53:24This is going to be the end of it.
53:26Can't believe it's going to make it up here.
53:33I've got an idea.
53:35You're going to hate me for it.
53:37Oh, f***.
53:44We can move for it.
53:45Oh, dear.
53:48Come on.
53:49Come on.
53:50Come on.
53:51Still some life in it, yeah.
53:53Bit of downhill charging.
53:55Ooh.
53:57You're definitely running out here.
53:58Come on.
53:59The end is nigh.
54:02Let's see what we're doing trip-wise.
54:04390.
54:06Get past this narrowing.
54:08Come on.
54:09This is going to be it, guys.
54:11It's been fun.
54:14But we can go no more.
54:16We're rolling backwards and we're done.
54:18Game over.
54:19390.1 miles.
54:21And we are empty.
54:22Well done, Polestar.
54:23They won't even move backwards down the hill.
54:26Let me just try it with my seatbelt on.
54:27We've got to double-check these things.
54:31No, it won't.
54:33It's not having any of it.
54:34Game over completely.
54:36Look at this.
54:36We've got help from Zapme.
54:38They've got a fast-charging battery pack in that van.
54:40So we're going to hook it up to this and we'll be on the road in no time.
54:43The Zapme van is like a giant version of a power bank you'd use to charge your mobile phone.
54:47But it's thousands of times more powerful.
54:49This means it can put a few miles of range back into my Polestar in just a couple of minutes.
54:54Which is enough to get me to the nearest public fast charger.
54:56And while that's happening, let's recap.
54:58The Polestar 3 was the clear winner.
55:00It managed 390 miles on a full charge.
55:02Which is 89% of what Polestar claims.
55:05In second place was the BMW iX.
55:07It did 366 miles.
55:09Which is 86% of its claimed range.
55:11Next was the Kia, which managed 329 miles.
55:14That's 94% of its claimed range.
55:16The Audi was just behind with 325 miles, which is 90% of its claimed range.
55:21And the Genesis came last.
55:22It only managed 279 miles.
55:24But that's an impressive 94% of its claimed range.
55:27The BMW, Kia, Audi and Genesis all returned identical energy consumption of 3.4 miles per kilowatt hour.
55:33But the Polestar fared slightly better at 3.5 miles per kilowatt hour.
55:37But how much did this journey cost?
55:39And how does it compare with the diesel Skoda Superb?
55:42Well, it will cost around ÂŁ84 to fully charge the Polestar's 111 kilowatt hour battery.
55:47Using a 50 kilowatt fast charger.
55:49And based on my real world range of 390 miles, that works out to 22 pence per mile.
55:54Filling the Skoda with diesel cost ÂŁ89.
55:56But that added 730 miles of range.
55:59Which works out to 12 pence per mile.
56:01However, if you charge your Polestar using cheap off-peak electricity at home,
56:05your running cost could be as low as 2 pence per mile.
