00:00¡Gracias!
00:30Thank you, New York!
00:39And let me thank the people of New York for sending Alexandria to the U.S. Congress.
00:49She is not only one of the great members of Congress,
00:53She is inspiring working people and young people all across the country.
01:00Thank you, New York.
01:05Now, everybody knows that a New York City mayor's race attracts a lot of attention.
01:15That's not new.
01:17It's the largest city in the country.
01:20You've got 8 million people.
01:21Everybody is interested in what happens here.
01:26But this mayor's race, my friends, is different.
01:36It is not just the folks here in New York City who are paying attention.
01:43It's not just people all across our country who are watching this race.
01:51It is not just the president of the United States who seems to be very, very concerned about who wins this election.
02:07The truth is that people all over the world are paying attention to what will happen here a week from Tuesday.
02:25Now, why is that?
02:28Why has this campaign created such an unbelievable amount of interest literally all over the world?
02:40And the answer is obvious.
02:47These are not normal times.
02:51This is not a normal election.
02:55This election takes place at a moment in American history when we have a rigged economy with more income and wealth inequality than we have ever had in the history of our country.
03:15This election takes place at a time when the wealthiest people in America have never, ever had it so good,
03:29while 60% of people in our country are living paycheck to paycheck, struggling to pay their rent or mortgage,
03:41struggling to afford child care or higher education for their kids,
03:47struggling to afford health care, struggling to afford decent quality food,
03:53struggling how to figure out how they will retire with some shred of dignity after working their entire lives.
04:08This election takes place when the United States of America,
04:14the wealthiest country in the history of the world,
04:17has one of the highest rates of childhood poverty and senior poverty of almost any nation.
04:28And when in this rich country, 800,000 Americans, including many veterans, are homeless.
04:38This election takes place at a time when we have a president who has given a trillion dollars in tax breaks to the top one percent.
04:58Has given has given 900 billion in tax breaks to the largest corporations in our country.
05:08And to pay for those tax breaks, he is throwing 15 million Americans off the health care they have by slashing Medicaid.
05:25And in addition, he is forcing over 20 million Americans to see a doubling in their health care premiums.
05:38This election is taking place when we have an administration in Washington,
05:43which every day is moving us toward an authoritarian society undermining our Constitution and the rule of law.
05:54This election is taking place when we have a corrupt campaign finance system,
06:05which allows billionaires in both political parties
06:10to select the candidates they want and to buy elections.
06:20That is the context in which this election is taking place.
06:50That is why this election is so enormously important and that is why Zoran Mamdani must become the next mayor of New York.
07:04New York must have a mayor who represents the working families of this city, not the billionaire class.
07:24The reason why this campaign has generated so much interest around the world and so much excitement
07:38is that people want to know the answer to one very simple question.
07:47And that is, in the year 2025, when the people on top have never, ever had so much economic and political power,
08:00is it possible, is it possible, is it possible for ordinary people, for working class people,
08:07to come together and defeat those oligarchs?
08:11You're damn right we can.
08:18And let me tell you something else.
08:28At a moment when Americans are extremely distressed about where we are as a nation economically and politically,
08:38a victory here in New York will give hope and inspiration to people throughout our country and throughout the world.
08:49That is what this election is about.
09:00And that is why Donald Trump is paying attention to this election.
09:06Ordinary people, working class people, black and white and Latino, Asian, gay and straight,
09:14coming together to take on the oligarchy.
09:17That is Trump's worst nightmare.
09:28And what Trump and his oligarchic friends know,
09:32that if New Yorkers come together and elect Zoran,
09:39we can do that from California to Maine,
09:42we can defeat the oligarchy.
09:51And what the oligarchs fear,
09:54what they fear is that people
09:56will start understanding
09:57that this country belongs to us, not them.
10:02And all over the country,
10:09when people are inspired,
10:11when people are standing up to power,
10:14they will ask some very simple questions.
10:17Why are we
10:18in the United States
10:20the only major country
10:23not to guarantee
10:24health care to all
10:25as a human right?
10:27Why are we in the United States,
10:29the only major country
10:31in the United States?
10:32Why aren't we paying our teachers
10:35the salaries they deserve?
10:38so that we can have the best
10:44public educational system
10:47in the world?
10:52Why aren't we doing what used to exist
10:55in New York and all over this country
10:5870 years ago,
11:00make public colleges and universities
11:02tuition-free?
11:10Why in the richest country on earth
11:13aren't we ending homelessness
11:15and building 5 million units
11:18of low-income and affordable housing?
11:20Why don't we make it easier
11:30for workers to join unions?
11:33And why don't we raise
11:39the national minimum wage
11:41to a living wage?
11:47And when so many of our seniors
11:49are struggling
11:50to cover their basic needs,
11:54some 22% of seniors in America
11:57are trying to survive
11:58on $15,000 a year less.
12:01Why aren't we raising
12:04Social Security benefits
12:06and providing pensions
12:08to the workers in this country
12:10who desperately need them?
12:14And why don't we have
12:17a foreign policy
12:18which does not spend
12:20billions of dollars
12:22on a Netanyahu government
12:24starving children in Gaza?
12:26In other words,
12:44in other words,
12:46my friends,
12:47in other words,
12:50my friends,
12:51a victory for Iran
12:53will help Americans
12:55understand
12:56that in the richest country
12:58in the history of the world,
13:00there is nothing
13:01we cannot accomplish.
13:04Now, the oligarchs
13:13and the political establishment
13:16in New York
13:18tell us
13:19that Zoran's agenda
13:21for New York
13:22is radical.
13:27Really.
13:28At a time
13:31when working families
13:32in this city
13:34are finding it hard
13:36to live here
13:37because of the outrageously
13:38high cost
13:39of housing,
13:40I don't think
13:41it's radical
13:42to say
13:43that the city
13:44should freeze the rent
13:45and triple its stock
13:47of affordable housing.
13:52That ain't radical.
13:53At a time
13:56when working families
13:58can't afford
14:00the high cost
14:01of child care
14:02and psychologists
14:03tell us
14:04the most important
14:06years of human development,
14:08intellectual and emotional,
14:09are zero through four.
14:11Why shouldn't
14:12we have
14:13a situation
14:14where every child
14:16in America
14:16gets the best
14:17quality child care
14:19we can provide?
14:20That ain't radical.
14:26Taking care
14:27of our kids
14:27is not radical.
14:30At a time
14:31when getting to work
14:32is too expensive
14:33and we want
14:34to encourage
14:34more utilization
14:36of public transportation,
14:38it is not
14:38a radical idea
14:40to say
14:40that buses
14:41in this city
14:42should be free
14:43and fast.
14:48At a time
14:49when every parent
14:50wants their kids
14:51eating good
14:52quality food
14:53not junk food
14:54and there are
14:56neighborhoods
14:56in the city
14:57where it is simply
14:58not affordable
14:59or possible
15:01to get that food.
15:02It is not
15:03a radical idea
15:04to say
15:05that there should be
15:06municipally funded
15:08grocery stores.
15:13And by the way,
15:15when billionaires
15:17and large corporations
15:19and the very wealthy
15:20are doing
15:22extraordinarily well
15:23when the very richest
15:26people in this country
15:27often pay
15:29an effective
15:30tax rate
15:31lower than
15:32truck drivers
15:33or nurses.
15:37It is not
15:39a radical idea
15:40to say
15:42that the rich
15:43should start paying
15:44their fair share
15:45of taxes.
16:05Brothers and sisters,
16:08brothers and sisters,
16:11these ideas
16:12are not radical.
16:13they are common
16:15sense
16:16and they are
16:16what the people
16:17of New York City
16:19want
16:20and need.
16:23Now let me
16:25be very clear.
16:27As someone
16:28who served
16:29as mayor
16:30of Burlington,
16:30Vermont
16:31for eight years,
16:32a city
16:35just a little bit
16:37smaller
16:37than New York,
16:38I can tell you
16:41absolutely
16:42that being mayor
16:43is not
16:44an easy job.
16:46In local government,
16:48the people
16:48hold you
16:49accountable
16:50for everything.
16:51For picking up
16:52the trash,
16:54for crime problems,
16:55for the quality
16:56of education
16:57their kids receive,
16:59for traffic jams,
17:00blame the mayor.
17:02And that's what
17:04mayors
17:04have to deal with.
17:06and it is not
17:08easy.
17:10Zaran Mamdani
17:11as mayor
17:12is not going
17:13to have
17:14all the answers.
17:17The problems
17:17facing this country
17:19and every other
17:21major city
17:22in America
17:22are in fact
17:24enormous.
17:25So let me
17:26say this
17:27to you
17:28from the bottom
17:28of my heart.
17:30When he
17:31is elected,
17:31your job
17:40is not
17:40over.
17:42Zaran
17:43is going
17:44to need
17:45your help
17:46every
17:47single
17:48day.
17:51In this
17:52unprecedented
17:53moment
17:54in our
17:55nation's
17:55history,
17:56all of us
17:57together
17:58must act
17:59in an
18:00unprecedented
18:01way.
18:05And that
18:06means
18:06governing
18:07New York
18:07City
18:08and other
18:08cities
18:09in an
18:09unprecedented
18:10way.
18:11Please
18:11do everything
18:13you can
18:14to work
18:15with Zaran
18:16in order
18:16to make
18:17him
18:17and his
18:18administration
18:19the best
18:21administration
18:21in the
18:22history
18:22of New York.
18:23Thank you.
18:31Let me
18:35conclude by
18:36saying this
18:37and I
18:37say this
18:38again as
18:38somebody
18:39who became
18:40mayor of
18:40Burlington,
18:41Vermont in
18:421981
18:43by winning
18:44that election
18:45by 10
18:47votes
18:47after recount.
18:48now I
18:51have
18:51looked at
18:52the polls
18:52here in
18:53New York
18:53you have
18:54seen it
18:54and the
18:55polls
18:56suggest
18:56that
18:57Zaran
18:57is in
18:58the lead
18:58and that
18:59is great
18:59but please
19:01please
19:02please
19:03do not
19:05underestimate
19:06our
19:07opponents.
19:09They
19:10have a
19:11huge
19:12amount
19:12of money
19:12and they
19:14are spending
19:14it right
19:15now.
19:16So I
19:18urge you
19:18forget about
19:19the polls
19:20go into
19:22the last
19:22eight days
19:23of this
19:24election
19:25assuming
19:26that you
19:27are five
19:27points
19:28behind.
19:29Thank you.
19:36So what
19:39you guys
19:39are going
19:39to have
19:40to do
19:40along
19:40with the
19:41other
19:4180,000
19:42volunteers
19:43in the
19:44Mamdami
19:45campaign
19:45you've
19:47got to
19:47do
19:48everything
19:48that you
19:49can
19:49to bring
19:50people
19:50to the
19:51polls
19:51in early
19:52voting
19:53which is
19:53taking
19:53place
19:54right now
19:54and on
19:55election
19:56day.
19:57None
19:58of us
19:59want to
19:59wake up
20:00the day
20:01after the
20:01election
20:02and find
20:03that we
20:04lost that
20:05election
20:05because our
20:07opponents
20:07outworked
20:08us.
20:09That must
20:10not happen.
