00:00Did you know New York City has noise cameras that can find you?
00:04It may sound new, but it's actually been going on for nearly two years.
00:10The noise camera program has been in effect since 2023 following the Stop Spreading the Noise Act.
00:17If a car's sound reaches over 85 decibels, which is about as loud as a lawnmower,
00:22the cameras will record and take a picture of the license plates.
00:25Those loud noises can include anything from a loud muffler, to music, to excessive honking.
00:32Fines can range from $800 to $2,500.
00:35One hopes that it will be indiscriminate.
00:38If you are making noise, then you will be picked up.
00:41A new report from the New York Post shows these cameras have generated more than 2,000 summonses
00:47and $1.7 million in fines over the last few years.
00:51Lawmakers mandated putting five cameras in every borough by the end of this month,
00:56but additional cameras were not funded in the latest city budget.
