00:01As far as we know, Cabernet Sauvignon at the earliest was 19th century.
00:07It really took off.
00:09But it took off.
00:11I mean, in terms of the age of the grape.
00:14Eddie and Ivan were saying that they think it's about maybe possibly as much as 300 years old.
00:20Which grape?
00:21Cabernet Sauvignon.
00:22So maybe about as old as Plavitz Mali.
00:25Plavitz Mali, but not anywhere near as old as Prividrag.
00:30When I first went to Croatia, it was with Eddie and Ivan and the University of Zagreb.
00:40And it was specifically to look for where they had found Soljanic Kasteljanski and Prividrag.
00:47First thing that I saw looking at Dobricic and Plavitz Mali is that they have Zinfandel-like leaves.
00:53And it's the only other varieties, the only other area that I've been to where you can see these specific patterns in the leaves that are very similar to Zinfandel.
01:03And there are many varieties in Croatia, Dalmatia especially, that have that characteristic layer shaped petiolar sinus.
01:11The
01:12So that the soil is not in the area of Zinfandel-like.
01:15The trees of Kasteljanski and the castellanski have been in California for several years.
01:18The foundation plant service at UC Davis, in the long and long process.
01:21in a long-term and long-term process.
01:23They try to clean the virus so they can be able to spread and spread.
01:51The types of differences you'd see in a clonal trial, getting rid of the virus you'll see also.
01:56But for all the studies we've done to date, both here in the United States and in Europe,
02:01and the Australians have done a few studies, we don't see negative results from those changes.
02:06Usually when we get rid of viruses, our winemakers like the vine that results better in terms of its color, sugar.
02:14You get better sugars and more fruit flavors in the grape clusters.
02:21Most grapevines in the field in Europe, in the old world, do tend to have virus diseases,
02:28especially if they're old, historic materials.
02:31And indeed, those clones came to us with virus in them.
02:35And we're performing therapy, trying to eliminate the virus,
02:38and then we can't release them to our growers until they're clean,
02:42because they couldn't come through quarantine yet.
02:44But once they're clean, we'll take them out of quarantine,
02:48and we'll also provide cuttings of the cleaned up material back to Croatia.
02:52And so scientists in California and Croatia will get to try all of these clones side by side
