00:00How do they build that is back at Smithsonian Channel. It's a brand new
00:06season of big thrills and even bigger builds. It all starts on Sunday, July 27th
00:11at 9 with our biggest build ever, the International Space Station, the most
00:16complicated construction project in human history. Here's a sneak peek.
00:23On December 4th, 1998, the docking system is put to the test when NASA
00:29launches space shuttle Endeavour, carrying the central hub module for the
00:34International Space Station named Unity. The Russian module Zarya, which has a
00:40basic life support system and will provide initial guidance, power and
00:45propulsion for the space station, is already orbiting Earth. Now, the two have to be
00:50joined. But to do that, Unity first has to be moved out of the cargo bay and on to
00:58the shuttle's roof. The arm operator, Nancy Curry, she basically grabbed the
01:05Unity module where she positioned the module right above the orbiter docking
01:09system and then she positioned the arm to capture the free-flying Zarya, which is a
01:16challenge in itself to actually capture a free-flying vehicle with the arm.
01:21Traveling at 17,500 miles per hour, that seems like a bit of an understatement.
01:32But now, slowly and steadily, Nancy uses the arm to catch Zarya. The time has come to join
01:42the two modules. And it's not going to be easy. Docking mechanisms require kinetic energy to capture using
01:52the momentum of two vehicles, essentially smashing together. But the arm is not good at providing
02:00high-speed momentum because it's, I guess, the way to look at it is when it maneuvers payloads in free space,
02:05it moves those in a very slow and methodical manner. So there is a basic incompatibility between the two systems.
02:14This was a cause of concern for mission control leading up to the mission.
02:18After many, many months of analyzing this particular situation, we came up with something that's known as SRMS
02:26assisted docking. So this is the way it works. This is kind of crazy. Sorry.
02:36The new season of How Did They Build That? Premieres Sunday, July 27th at 9 on Smithsonian Channel.
02:43And catch all of your favorite builds from past seasons.
02:46It's totally different from anything around it.
02:49This building does not make sense.
02:51Streaming now on Paramount+.
