00:00Imagine a world without architectural marvels like skyscrapers and modern
00:13buildings, life-saving medical equipment, dozens of useful appliances and
00:21colorful dyes used in paints, makeup, all manner of beautiful things. This world
00:28would be deprived of Chrome's thousands of applications. Chrome gives metals,
00:36alloys and materials color and brilliance, strength and resistance to
00:42corrosion, temperature and wear. Extremely versatile and unique, Chrome adds beauty
00:49and durability to our lives. Stainless steel is perhaps the best known
00:55application. Over 75% of worldwide Chrome is used in its production.
01:11Based in Johannesburg, South Africa and serving the world, Samancor Chrome mines
01:17chrome ore and produces ferrochrome, an essential part of stainless steel and
01:23various alloys. Samancor Chrome is the world's second largest ferrochrome
01:29producer. It extracts chrome ore in the Bushveld igneous complex, a rich geological
01:35formation containing over 70% of known reserves. Samancor Chrome's prospecting
01:41and mining rights secure ore here for more than a century.
01:45It's two mining complexes are located on both the western and eastern limbs of the Bushveld.
01:54Western chrome mines near Rustenberg, Northwest Province and eastern chrome mines in the Leidenberg-Steelport
02:03area of Limpopo feature underground and open cast mines and retreatment plants. The company also operates three smelting plants.
02:12Ferro metals in Emalakleni, Mpumalanga Province is the largest ferrochrome plant in the western world producing both charge chrome and medium carbon ferrochrome.
02:25Middleburg Ferrochrome and Technochrome near Middleburg, Mpumalanga Province produces charge chrome and low carbon ferrochrome, one of only a few plants in the world to do this.
02:35Tubatsi Ferrochrome in the Leidenberg-Steelport area of Limpopo enjoys the economic advantage of being very close to eastern chrome mines.
02:42What makes Samancor Chrome stand out is its focus on the well-being of its people and the communities where it operates, the environment and the production of quality products.
02:50Six corporate values guide decisions to help ensure success in a highly competitive world arena. Zero harm, integrity, respect, care for people, focus on core business and cost consciousness.
03:03Samancor Chrome extracts over 4 million tons of chrome ore each year using both open pit and underground mining.
03:18Two main underground methods are used, conventional and mechanized.
03:38Conventional mining uses handheld drills.
03:41Holes are charged with explosives, blasted and the material is scraped to an ore pass and transported to surface via conveyor belts.
03:54In mechanized mining, drill rigs are used to drill holes, which are then charged and blasted.
04:01The material is moved to a tipping point with a load hole damper or LHD and transported to surface via conveyor belts.
04:10Once collected, the ore is fed into a beneficiation plant where it is crushed, sorted and separated.
04:24Impurities are removed and quality is enhanced through a dense media separation process.
04:31The ore then moves through a spiral plant and screening process for grading and sizing.
04:38Beneficiation is designed for efficiency and quality control.
04:45Pelletization creates many advantages.
04:52During smelting, high quality chromite pellets result in better furnace operation and chrome recovery.
04:59Power costs are significantly lower while chrome yields are higher and more consistent.
05:06Let's take a look at how chrome ore becomes ferrochrome, the important ingredient in stainless steel.
05:24Chrome ore, reductants and fluxes are fed into large submerged electric arc and DC furnaces.
05:33An endothermic process creates a molten charge of 1700 degrees Celsius.
05:38Intense heat produces molten ferrochrome and slag, which is tapped.
05:43During the tapping process, the slag is removed and the ferrochrome alloy is cast into ingots or granulated.
05:50Once cooled, ferrochrome ingots are crushed and screened to exact customer specifications.
05:56Semancore chrome produces over 1.2 million tons of ferrochrome each year, over 80% of which is charged chrome.
06:06Intermediate carbon ferrochrome is produced in a converter, while low carbon ferrochrome is produced in a separate process.
06:13Quality control is critical throughout to achieve desired results.
06:1890% of Semancore's chrome customers are stainless steel producers located worldwide.
06:31Ordering is streamlined for accuracy and service, and sales are done in bulk and delivered in containers or bags.
06:38Products are shipped from ports at Durban and Richards Bay.
06:45Semancore chrome is a fully integrated ferrochrome producer, with enough primary resources to sustain mining and smelting for decades.
06:55It maintains competitiveness by continuously improving operations, volume, cost and quality.
07:02It is committed to grow mining and optimize beneficiation through greenfield projects and other initiatives.
07:10Zero harm to people and the environment is key.
07:14Semancore chrome values its greatest resource, its employees, and their important contributions to all aspects of operations.
07:22I enjoy working for Semancore. It's caring for its people. Even during difficult times, it's changed by its people.
07:30Training and development is excellent on this mine. The culture here is one of its kind. It's one of its kind. So I really enjoy working for this mine.
07:41Training programs, bursary funds, wellness programs, and on-site clinics are testament to its commitment to be an employer of choice.
07:50It also improves communities located near operations. Corporate social investment projects increase understanding and trust, and create partnerships of lasting value.
08:02Dynamic leadership, dynamic leadership, a formidable workforce, vast resources, world-class technology, and a commitment to customer satisfaction,
08:12gear Semancore chrome for growth, innovation, and a bright future.
