00:00Hordes of bees in New York City?
00:02This is unbee-lievable.
00:04Welcome to Weird But True, your honeypot for the strangest stories from the post.
00:09From extreme heat to swarms of insects, the Big Apple has been hit with a barrage of biblical
00:14plagues.
00:15What's next?
00:16Frogs?
00:17Thankfully, the city doesn't look like the movie Magnolia.
00:21Not yet, at least.
00:22How do frogs fall into the sky?
00:28However, on June 12th, pedestrians were shocked to see a tornado of bees in midtown Manhattan,
00:34just downstairs from our studio.
00:36Just my luck.
00:37NYU student Hilma Mamoon shared the scary scene on TikTok with the caption, POV, the actualization
00:44of my biggest fear, random bee swarm in New York City.
00:48So what's going on here?
00:50Turns out, New York City is home to 775 beehives.
00:54And no, I'm not talking about Beyonce's fans.
00:58The city legalized hobby beekeeping in 2010, and since then there's been a surge in corporate
01:06rooftop beehives.
01:07Swarming behavior occurs when the queen bee is looking for a new home or a new source of
01:12food, and summer is the peak season for it.
01:15One TikToker joked, their lease was probably up, and the landlord hiked the rent.
01:20Sounds like she's voting for Zoron.
01:22To find out more, the post chatted with two apiarists, which is a fancy word for beekeeper.
01:27Nick Hoefle said, swarming is very regular in nature, it's just easier to spot because
01:32of a lack of greenery in a big city.
01:34Meanwhile, his colleague at the New York Bee Club, Nick Rozak, called the swarms feral,
01:39and blamed lazy beekeepers for not keeping their bugs in line.
01:43Common tricks include using pheromones to lure the swarms to a specific location, or using
01:48smoke to calm the bee's instinct to sting.
01:51Across the country, other strange swarms are blowing people's minds.
01:55In Ohio, it's mating season for mayflies.
01:58Each day, the remnants of their insect orgy are stuck to every surface in the town of Port
02:02Clinton.
02:03Nasty little boggers.
02:04Down in the Sunshine State, a different kind of swarm-covered satellite beach.
02:08They're called sand fleas, but they're actually small crustaceans.
02:13In other words, visit Florida and you just might come back with crabs.
