Tens of millions of red crabs are making their way to the ocean as part of their annual migration on Christmas Island, where a much smaller human population uses leaf blowers and garden rakes to help them on their way. (Video courtesy of Associated Press, Parks Australia)
01:30We really value the crabs and it's one of the privileges of living on the island is that when it's crab season, we all do our best to try and reduce impacts to crabs on the road.
01:43So the park staff who I work for, we actually spend a lot of our time early in the morning and late in the afternoon after work raking the busiest roads to allow cars to go through so that we don't impact crabs too much.
01:56And also lots of community members and local businesses do the same, which is fantastic.
02:01Can I make a suggestion?
02:11When their baby, their little baby's only about half the size of your fingernail, we can't rake them because you'd crush them.
02:20So instead we use leaf blowers.
02:22So in about a month after the spawning occurs, we're down on the coast looking pretty hilarious actually wearing these backpack leaf blowers and blowing all these tiny little crabs off the road to try and reduce the impact of cars.
