Pipe Bomb Investigation: Official FBI Releases Summary
🎥 About This Video:
Incident Overview On January 5, 2021, between approximately 7:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. EST, an unidentified individual placed two pipe bombs in the Capitol Hill neighborhood of Washington, D.C. One device was placed in an alley behind the Republican National Committee (RNC) Headquarters at 310 First Street SE. The other was placed next to a park bench near the Democratic National Committee (DNC) Headquarters at 430 South Capitol Street SE. The devices were viable and could have detonated, potentially causing serious injury or death to innocent bystanders. The bombs did not detonate. Identifying the perpetrator remains a top priority for the FBI Washington Field Office and partner agencies, including the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives; U.S. Capitol Police; and D.C. Metropolitan Police Department.
Suspect Description The suspect is approximately 5 feet 7 inches tall. The individual wore a face mask, glasses, a gray hooded sweatshirt, black pants, black gloves, and distinctive black and light gray Nike Air Max Speed Turf shoes with a yellow Nike logo (fewer than 25,000 pairs sold between August 2018 and January 2021). The suspect carried a backpack to transport the devices. Based on video footage and interviews, the FBI believes the suspect is not from the Capitol Hill area and may have operated from the vicinity of Folger Park.
Detailed Timeline of Suspect Movements (Based on Surveillance Video) 7:34 p.m.: First observed at the intersection of First Street and North Carolina Avenue Southeast. Walks southwest on North Carolina Avenue, turns north on New Jersey Avenue, west on D Street, then south on South Capitol Street. Sets down backpack (believed to contain one bomb), puts on glasses, scans the area while standing on tiptoes, then picks up backpack and heads north on South Capitol Street. Reaches the corner of D Street, turns around, walks south to a bench outside DNC headquarters, and sits for a few minutes without placing the bomb. Walks east on Ivy Street, north on New Jersey Avenue, pauses near the corner of D Street, then retraces steps back to the DNC bench.
