Tensions soar between the United States and Colombia after U.S. military strikes in the Caribbean killed dozens of people, targeting a vessel allegedly linked to Colombia’s National Liberation Army (ELN). The ELN has denied any involvement, stating that drug trafficking is strictly prohibited under its rules.
Colombian President Gustavo Petro condemned the strikes, insisting the boat belonged to a humble family, not rebels, and raised concerns over humanitarian risks and legality. Without evidence, former U.S. President Donald Trump accused Petro of being an “illegal drug leader”, escalating diplomatic tensions further.
Trump also threatened higher tariffs and a complete cut of U.S. funding to Colombia in response to the dispute, sparking fears of a regional diplomatic crisis. Legal experts and human rights groups have questioned the strikes, warning of the potential for international backlash.
