00:00It's a first in the history of the European Union, a former head of state behind bars.

00:07Nicolas Sarkozy, president of France from 2007 to 2012,

00:13entered the La Santé prison right behind me in Paris this Tuesday morning.

00:18The 70-year-old is serving a five-year sentence for criminal conspiracy

00:24for the Libyan financing of his 2007 presidential campaign.

00:30Sarkozy has appealed the verdict, as has the prosecutor's office.

00:36This morning, his sons called for a show of support near his family home in Paris,

00:42and hundreds of people gathered in support of the former president.

00:52C'est des habitudes qui doivent changer, c'est très bien,

00:55mais ça ne mérite absolument pas la prison pour Sarkozy.

01:00C'est quelque chose d'absolument totalement aberrant.

01:03Je ressens beaucoup de tristesse, tristesse pour celui qui a été notre guide pendant cinq ans,

01:10qui a été président de notre pays, qui a mené l'État, la France,

01:14de la tristesse et des interrogations par rapport à cette condamnation qui semble quand même assez sévère.

01:21J'ai honte pour la France.

01:23J'ai honte pour un président qui a tellement fait, qui est sincère,

01:28qui a lutté pendant la crise des subprimes, qui a fait vraiment,

01:32puis même, je veux dire, c'est pas normal de le mettre en prison.

01:36C'est complètement absurde, ça ne sert à rien, absolument à rien,

01:39à part à l'humilier, à humilier la France.

01:41J'ai un peu honte, j'avoue, j'ai un peu honte,

01:46vis-à-vis du monde entier.

01:49On devient comme des pays sous-développés presque.

01:54Enfin bon, je trouve ça terrible.

01:56Once Sarkozy is officially registered as an inmate,

01:59his lawyers will immediately request his release pending appeal.

02:03The courts will have up to two months to decide,

02:07though a ruling could come much earlier.
