Liberal Democratic Party head Takaichi Sanae is elected as Japan’s 104th Prime Minister, making it the first time in constitutional history that a woman has assumed the country’s top post. In the prime ministerial nomination election, Takaichi secured a majority in the first vote held in the plenary session of the House of Representatives.
The ruling LDP members, its coalition partner Japan Innovation Party members, and several independent lawmakers are believed to have voted for Takaichi.
Takaichi is set to form her new cabinet later in the evening.
